SCWS Winter Weight Pull

The SCWS Winter Weight Pull was held on December 1st and 2nd.  It was greeted with downpour (or should I say sidepour!) and 40 MPH winds. 

The dogs pulled on a natural surface of packed dirt and rock under an overhang that kept the track dry.  It was surprising how many dogs had only pulled on carpet over blacktop and had never pulled on a natural surface.  Some of the dogs didn’t know what to do when the cart didn’t roll smoothly, but most took advantage of the better gripping surface.  

Saturday we had 30 entries:  7 Samoyeds, 10 Malamutes, 8 Pitbulls, 2 St. Bernards, 2 Chinooks, and 1 Siberian.  The Pitbulls put on a wonderful show of strength and determination.  High Percentage went to Pitbull Magoo at 69 lbs, pulled 1720 lbs. for 24.92 times his weight. 

Sunday dawned cloudy and cold with NO RAIN and NO WIND!  We had 16 entries:  8 Samoyeds; 6 Malamutes; and 2 St. Bernards.  The most weight pulled both days was 2920 lbs. By St. Bernard Hennesy.  High Percentage on Sunday and High Percentage combined for both days went to Samoyed Kim and handler Kathy Buckner, and Kathy’s other girl Kaelin was only 2% behind.  They put on a spectacular show with Kim pulling 840 lbs. At 19.1 times her body weight on Saturday and 1000 lbs. At 22.92 times her weight on Sunday.  Kaelin pulled 680 lbs. At 17.4 times her body weight on Saturday and 920 lbs at 23.59 times her weight on Sunday.  Congratulations Kathy, Kim and Kaelin!!

As you can see, in true Samoyed fashion, some of the dogs were saying “We did this yesterday, lets do something else.” 

Everything went smoothly and all the handlers of all breeds pitched in to help with the cart, judging, keeping the track in good shape, and timing.   

I want to especially thank Sandra for getting together everything we needed to make the pull a go, Darlene and Cheri for keeping the score sheets easy for me to compute, Liz and Kathy for expert timekeeping, Ron and Kathy Manor for helping get the equipment and blocks to Bonney Lake, Van for making Lunch both days, Kathy for running the Novice Weight Pull and a special thanks to Jeff for helping load 4000 lbs of cement block in the pouring rain. 

Everyone seemed to have a good time and it was an excellent opportunity to get to know some other folks with other breeds but the same interests.  All those who attended encouraged us to do this again soon, because it was so much fun, and there are far too few sanctioned weight pulls.
