Eskimo North Bulletin Board

The reason I haven't posted much in the last few days is that I've been busy getting some new things online.

In 1982, I started Eskimo North as a single line BBS on a Radio Shack TRS-80 model III with a whole of 48 Kbytes (yes that is KILObytes, not megabytes or gigabytes), and 280 Kbytes of disk. It grew on that platform to about 3 Mbytes of floppy disk and then got moved to a model IV initially with 64 Kbytes of RAM and then later 128 Kbytes of RAM.

In 1985 it was moved to a Unix based Tandy 16B (actually Xenix) and initially 4 lines, expanded to 11 lines with some custom hardware hacks to the machine.

Then in 1991 went to a Sun 3/180 which was very rapidly upgraded to a Sun 3/280, and then Sun 4/280 (which involved changing out CPU boards). Then was supplimented with a Sun 330.

In 1992 Eskimo North was connected to the Internet and started providing Internet services.

Now, in 2006, Eskimo North has just launched a FREE Web based Bulletin Board system returning to our original roots.

CopperMine works better than Gallery

After messing with Gallery for a while, I came to the conclusion that it was painfully slow and the interface was counter-intuitive at best.

CopperMine is another photo gallery which I've decided I like much better. It is WAY faster than Gallery and the Interface is a lot more intuitive to me.

Part of the issue I think is these two programs really target different audiences, Gallery appears to be designed for someone who wants to sell images, thus it has a shopping cart and other E-comemrce facilities, whereas CopperMine seems to be geared much more to displaying photographs which was my intent.

I'll post a link here once I get it all configured and populated with images.

After fixing the problem with PHP, I decided to retry some of the other applications I had tried in the past, one of which was Gallery.

It works now! Yeah!

Sick Dogs...

Draco Chews A Rawhide

We've got a Great Dane sized red Doberman named Draco. He has never been your typical high energy Doberman. I'd guess he sleeps an average of about 20 hours a day.

Recently he got sick. At first he started eating less and I thought well the weather is 90ºF out and he's not terribly high energy so about the only thing he needs calories for is to keep his body warm. But then he stopped eating dog food altogether.

So $200 worth of lab tests later the vetrinarian diagnoses a kidney and bladder infection, though there is some indications it was also in his sinuses and intestines.

I was not sure he was going to make it through the night before last. Couldn't get up on his own, then couldn't get back down.

He is on antibiotics and doing a lot better today. Whatever he picked is nasty stuff. He brought a petrified squirrel home a couple of weeks ago, maybe something from that.

Today he demanded his morning walk and didn't want to go the short route, been a while since he did that so definitely is getting better.

Are The Aliens Here? What Are They?

My viewpoint on this issue is biased by my early experience. After that experience I am convinced we are visited by beings from elsewhere.

My experience had little in common with most reported. Although arrival at the landing location wasn't of my own volition, entering the craft was. So it wasn't a complete abduction, nor was it completely voluntary. The beings I encountered were neither grey, reptilian, or tall blond humans with unusually intense deep blue or indigo eyes. The craft was essentially empty. There were no glass tubes with floating embryos. There was no examination table or anal probes.

My experience did have something in common with Whitley Streibers' experience in that it seemed to involve a state of consciousness that was somewhere between a normal dream and a normal waking state. I had physical evidence when I awoke, clay on my pajama legs where there was none in the area except at the landing site. My experience didn't involve Whitleys' evil clowns.

If you take the testimony of others at face value, there must be a number of different alien species visiting us with a number of different agendas using different technologies. One thing all of them seem to share in common is that they all warn us of impending environmental disasters. Perhaps we should pay attention.

If you do a bit of browsing around the Internet, read the stories of various abductees and others that have had more friendly encounters, it becomes apparent that there are several broad groups of species with several agendas.

Pleiadians or Nordics are a tall blond people with deep-blue or indigo eyed. They are described as being beautiful. They arrive via "beamships" and have a particular fondness for a one-armed Swiss farmer by the name of Billy Meier. More recently they've been slightly less selective with respect to whom they share their wisdom. They warn of impending environmental disasters and the need for spiritual growth. They appear to be emotionally hypersensitive, empathetic, and spiritually evolved.

Greys are usually three and a half to four and a half feet tall. They have giant black insect eyes, a small or absent nose, a small mouth, anywhere from between 4-7 digits, and a nasty penchant for anal probes.

Greys are involved in a program designed to produce a hybrid of their race and ours. They tend to abduct along family lines. If you're a frequent abductee, the odds are good that your parents were and your children will be.

Greys have the capability to manipulating human consciousness. They are able to immobilize, force sleep, erase memories, and plant screen memories. Most abductees only become aware of their experience through the phenomena of missing time and with the help of hypnotic regression.

Greys extract human-grey hybrid fetuses from the wombs of women they've implanted with alien seed and grow them to term in glass tubes with some sort of fluid and fetal life support system. They seem to be devoid of normal human emotions and any hint of spirituality.

Reptilians are large creatures, often seven feet tall. They are green and have eyes with a yellow vertical iris. They are the galaxies sex predators. They seem to have no real function in life except to come to earth and rape or seduce earth women. The reports are often similar to the story of Brians mothers' rape at the hands of a Roman in the Monty Python film, "The Life of Brian". "Was it rape?", "At first." Once you've had reptilians nothing else will satisfy.

Reptilians have been reported to shape-shift and appear human. They are reported to flash back to reptilian form when stressed or threatened. It has been suggested that many of our political leaders are in fact reptilians in disguise. Reptilian-human sex always involves male reptilians and female humans. I've heard no reports of female reptilians. They are occasionally reported working with the greys. The greys are subservient to the reptilians.

Greys are usually reported as being 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 feet tall but occasionally tall versions are reported as being up to seven or eight feet. They have between four and seven fingers. They may have small noses or only breathing holes. They may have small ears or only holes in the side of their heads. Their eyes may be black with compound lenses like a bug, or they may have multiple eyelids with the inner eyelid being black but a normal but large eye behind that eyelid. Some abductees report greys with human like genetils, other reports say they are sexless. Some greys manipulate human consciousness through mental effort, others require devices.

Reptilians and Nordics or Pleiadians are less varied. Reptilians are always described as male sex maniacs, Pleiadians always spiritually advanced and benevolent. Pleiadians or Nordics get their name from their star system of origin, The Pleiades, or their resemblance to Nordic people.

Reptilians are extremely malevolent, Greys vary between malevolence and neutrality, Pleiadians are always benevolent. All warn us of impending environmental disasters. All differ from the creatures in my experience. I have found no similar descriptions on the Internet.

I speculate that the greys aren't from where but from when. Our descendents, they know about coming environmental disasters because their ancestors recorded them. Greys are from four and a half billion years into the future. Earth has been scorched by the red giant sun. The oceans have boiled dry. Greys moved to distant planets or moons with comfortable temperatures. They can not survive further into the future because the Sun, now a red giant, is becoming unstable. Greys large eyes allow them to see in their infrared illuminated environment.

Possessing the capability of time travel, they go back to when the Sun was a hydrogen burning main sequence star. This would establish a new timeline different from their own in which they could continue to evolve for billions of years. Poorly equipped for today's environment, they are creating a hybrid race to carry on. Greys interest in genetically compatible ancestors account for the tendency for abductions to occur along family lines.

Will they need us once their hybrid race is perfected? Greys come from a different timeline. They are not directly descended from us, rather from our parallels in a parallel universe. Our survival may not be relevant. They may want to keep their direct ancestors around as genetic stock for future manipulations.

What happens when a primitive race encounters a more technologically advanced race? In our historical experience it is not pretty for the less advanced race. But there is no exact precedent. The American Indians were not our ancestors or even parallel equivalents.

When Jimmy Carter ran for the presidency, one of his campaign promises was to reveal to us the truth behind the UFO phenomena. President Carter was sincere and honest. If it were possible for him to reveal the truth behind the UFO phenomena without placing us in great peril, he would have done so. President Carter did push through the Freedom of Information Act, through which we are able to ascertain that a genuine and massive UFO coverup exists.

A caller to the Coast to Coast radio program told a story about an encounter with President Carter at a book signing some eight years after his term in office. The caller asked the former president why he did not keep his promise and reveal the truth behind UFO's. Jimmy Carter had no response except to place his hands to his face and weep. If our government is unwilling to share the news, it's because it's bad. For a man of President Carters' stature to break down like that, the truth has to be extremely terrible.

Greys by all accounts are not spiritually enlightened. Look at what unenlightened Caucasians did to the Native American when we came to this country. The difference in technological capability is even greater between the greys and ourselves.

Tales of heavily guarded underground military bases, where aliens and humans work side by side, indicate our government is working with the Greys. If the aliens do intend to replace us, they will do so after their hybrid race is perfected. If we wish to stop them the time to act is now. Dwindling abduction reports suggest that they are nearing completion. Sightings of saucer shaped crafts have been replaced by sightings of gigantic triangular crafts. Smaller craft are appropriate for research and reconnaissance. Larger craft are appropriate for transport, perhaps large numbers of little grey men, or human-grey hybrids.

Perhaps all is not lost. I can't believe the Pleiadians would just stand by and let them do their evil deeds without warning us but still warn us of impending environmental disaster. Perhaps they will intervene on our behalf.

Reptilians are one piece of the puzzle which does not fit. Reptilians act as supervisors of the greys when they're not having sex with earth women. What is their role?

SETI - Why It Won't Find Alien Signals

Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute wrote an article which describes in brief what will happen when a candidate signal is received. It does leave out some of the verification tests, but you will note in this article that when it looks like a real signal, the astronomer will then call his buddies elsewhere in the world and have them verify. As the article states, "The process will take several days."

This is the major flaw in existing SETI protocols. The chance alignment of transmitting and receiving antennas will not remain for "several days". No increase in receiver sensitivity, the number of channels, or signal to noise ratio, will resolve this issue.

What SETI needs is some way to verify, close to instantly, the reception of a signal at multiple locations around the planet. This requires international co-operation which is in short supply. International rape and pillaging seems to be the rule of the day. Without resolving this issue, SETI will not detect alien signals.

Earliest Childhood Memories


I took this photography from my back yard through a small tree with the moon illuminating some clouds in the background. This was taken with a Mamiya DTL1000 camera and Kodak Gold film (prior to the change to Royal Gold). No real relationship to the topic at hand.

I was thinking today about my earliest childhood memories. I am unusual in that I remember things from very early on.

My earliest memory was when I was three days old. I was adopted and my adoptive mother brought me home. She had a spider monkey in a cage down in the laundry room that she got rid of, at the advice of the family doctor, but it was there for a day or two after I was adopted.

My mother brought me down into the laundry room. That monkey in the cage defecated. I remember it was runny and I was repulsed by it. This seems a strange reaction for a baby that messes his own diapers to have. I guess I was a three day old hypocrite.

It has been suggested that the reason I remembered this was because of the trauma associated with being separated from my birth mother after three days. Being born three days earlier would have been more traumatic, however, I have no memory of birth.

My next earliest memory is of being in the living room with my mother. I not able to walk or talk. I was able to pull myself into an upright position using the couch. I was not tall enough to climb on to it. I could climb up on the part that supported the cushions and get in between the cushions and that part. My mother would always put me back down on the floor when I did.

Being put back down on the floor, after making so much effort, was frustrating. I was not able to speak my frustration. I could understand at least some things people said. This seems to be the opposite of how I've learned languages as an adult where it has been easier to learn to speak than to comprehend.

The worlds fair was in Seattle in 1962. I was not quite four years old. I was born November 4th, 1958. We went to the fair and there was still a lot of construction in progress . The construction seemed ominous and threatening.

The part of the fair I remember the most was the Science Center. Today it's just a ghost of what it used to be. At that time the entire building complex was used for science related displays which included a planetarium. The planetarium has been converted into a laser light show.

There was a large room with a red circular moving carpeted walk way. There were rear projection screens in the wall to the left. Each was about the size of a 19 inch computer monitor. I had seen normal front screen projection. My parents owned an 8 mm camera and an 8 mm projector. They would project family films on a screen in the living room. I had never seen a rear projection setup. It was pure magic, lighted glowing changing pictures in the wall! The granularity of the glass the image was projected on fascinated me. It was similar to the interference pattern effect you get with a laser hologram.

To the right they had a steam rocket. It was a rocket like something you would see in a bad 60's sci-fi movie that was on a guiding pole. About once a minute it would launch on a jet of steam. It would slide back down the pole and repeat the stunt a minute or so later.

SETI candidate signal

First their was the "Wow" signal, and then it seems about once a year someone claims that SETI has discovered an extraterrestrial civilization. These have been real signals detected by SETI but discarded as not originating from an alien civilization. Arguably, the SETI protocol makes this impossible and explains why no confirmed detections have occurred to date.

SETI can only look for carrier waves, it can not detect any signal modulation if that modulation occurs at rates that would be useful for carrying information. If SETI detects a signal from space, determines that it is in fact arriving from deep space, SETI has no effective way to distinguish between a natural signal such as a star atmosphere MASER, and a signal from a distant civilization.

When a signal is detected by SETI, the protocol calls for first pointing the antenna off of it's present direction. If the signal remains, then it is a signal bleeding in from some earthly origin.

If the signal goes away when the antenna is pointed away, the antenna is then pointed back to it's original position. If the signal is again present, then at least you know it's coming from that direction.

You do not yet know if the signal is from deep space or an orbiting satellite. So then you get your buddies elsewhere around the planet to point their antennas at it. If the antennas both receive the signal pointed in exactly the same direction, then you have a signal originating from deep space.

At this point SETI requires that the signal continue to be present the next day. This is test that all of the potential signals that have survived earlier tests, including the "Wow" signal, have failed.

A little radio background explains why it is nearly impossible for a legitimate signal from an alien civilization to pass this test.

In order for a radio signal to arrive from a distant star system and be detectable here on earth, even with huge dish antennas and extremely sensitive receivers, that signal would need to be transmitted with a huge effective radiated power. Practical limits on transmitter power make it essentially impossible for an intelligent civilization to generate enough power without the aid of a high gain antenna.

A high gain antenna increases the power transmitted in a particular direction by not radiating power in other directions. The higher the antenna gain, the narrower the transmitted beam. In order to achieve the necessary gain to transmit a signal to a distant planet, a very high gain narrow beam width antenna must be employed.

In order for a signal to be received here on the Earth, the transmitting antenna on the distant world would have to be aimed precisely at our earth.

The earth rotates and presumably so would the planet of the transmitting civilization. The earth further is orbiting around our Sun, and presumably home planet of the aliens would be orbiting their star. The earth isn't orbiting our star alone but is part of the earth-moon system and the earth-moon systems' center of gravity orbits the sun, making the earths motion around the Sun even more complex. The Sun then orbits in our galaxy and bobs up and down in the galactic plain, presumably the same would be true of the distant civilizations' Sun.

Consequently, while it is possible that rarely the transmitting antenna of an alien civilization and our receiving antenna may point at each other, the odds of that recurring a day later, as required by the SETI protocol, are infinitesimally small. It is my believe that the protocol is therefore flawed.

The only signals from an alien civilization that SETI could hope to detect and confirm, under the requirements of the existing protocols, would be from a civilization intentionally trying to signal us and constantly re-aiming their transmitting antenna to follow the motion of our planet relative to theirs.

I can see one plausible scenario where this could potentially occur but it would seem unlikely. In a decade or two, it is expected that we will have the technology to directly image planets orbiting close star systems and even analyze the spectrum of the light reflected from these distant planets to determine if compounds that tend to indicate the presence of life exist in their atmospheres.

There may be alien civilizations around relatively nearby stars with this technological capability and they may have imaged our planet, performed a spectroscopic analysis and determined that there is likely to be life on this planet. In order to determine whether or not a technological civilization exists here they may have decided to intentionally transmit a signal that a technological civilization would understand was intentionally directed at them and then await a reply from us. That's about the only plausible scenario under which SETI could receive a signal that it could confirm under it's own protocol.

I believe it is likely that many of these alien candidate signals that failed the repeatability test were in fact alien signals that we received as the result of a chance alignment of their transmitting antenna and our receiving antenna.

So I think that it is very probable that the "Wow" signal, the signal now being reported by Steven Greer of the Disclosure Project, another signal received in 2004, I think it is probable that these are in fact of alien origin. But with current technology we will not be able to find out, unless one of our respective civilizations had developed faster than light capability and visits.

Hot, Seattle Alki & Vancouver BC Pictures

It's hot today, at least for Shoreline, 90ºF out. Yea, I know for some parts of the country that's a cold snap but for here, where it's usually overcast and 55ºF, that's hot!

This brings up a question, anybody know how to make the degrees symbol, the little 'o' that is up high, with a PC keyboard? On my Sun keyboard, I'd hit ?+0 and get that symbol but that doesn't work on the PC keyboard.

The Ninja Pirate answered this question, [ALT]+1+6+7 = º, but for some reason I can't add comments to this post now, Blogger says it can't find this blog, yet, I can edit posts.

If I had my way I'd be at the beach taking pictures of the scenery, I'm sure it's good now. But I'm too broke to waste gas right now. If anybody has any brilliant income ideas you want to share?

I run an ISP, it's been slow, probably a combination of bad economy and people out enjoying the sun instead of using their computers, which is what I'd really rather be doing.

Summer of 1996 at Alki beach in West Seattle, a decade ago, 35 mm Mamiya DTL1000 camera two 2x barlows stacked in front of a 500 mm lens to yield an effective focal length of 2000 mm with a lot of chromatic aberration which actually lent this picture a soft look that I liked given the subject material.



I took this picture near the end of the summer of 2004 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at an XLR8 show at the Pacific Northwest Exhibition with the Minolta DiMage Z1 that GoodGuys / Compusa is holding hostage for more than a year now. XLR8 is like a dance troupe / circus act set to popular music. When we first saw XLR8 (pronounced Accelerate) several years prior, they had their own band that did really good covers, but in 2004 they only used recorded music which took a lot from the atmosphere.

This was also part of XLR8's act. These pictures are grainy because the lighting inside is dim.

I have this trick I use for getting pictures in low light which I call "digital push processing". Set the shutter speed for the slowest possible without too much blurring, and then set the film speed to the highest rating and the lens aperture all the way open.

When the light is insufficient for normal exposure at the selected shutter speed,
this will create a dark under exposed image.

A histogram shows all of the pixels near the dark end of the spectrum. I use photo manipulation software to stretch that out over the normal dynamic range from dark to light. The resulting photo is grainy, but it makes it possible to capture images that otherwise would be impossible.

With 35 mm, I have shot Konica 3200 ASA color print film. The results I get with digital using the above technique is superior to what I can get with the Konica 3200 ASA film.

This isn't to take too much away from the show, it was fun to watch live and in person. If you are in the Vancouver BC Canada area near the end of the summer and like big fairs, the PNE is one to go to, and these shows are free.

Vancouver BC is a beautiful city and if I could figure out a way to pull of the financials of moving there and living there I would. Here is a shot of the mountains to the north taken from the balcony of a Red Robin restaurant there. How can you beat a backdrop like that?

Bootleg Radio

During Jr. High and High School, this would be in the time frame from 1971 through 1977, friends and myself operated a number of bootleg radio stations.

Some of my friends were captured by the Federal Communications Commission. Somehow I was lucky and evaded capture but there was a couple of close calls.

The friends in question shall remain nameless, even though I am sure it is well past the statute of limitations and I am also pretty sure the FCC knew who and where all the players were and pretty much left us alone until we caused trouble.

I met several of my friends through our mutual involvement with pirate radio. One of them had connected a volt meter to the AGC line (this is a voltage in a radio used to control the gain to compensate for varying signal levels). By driving around until they got the strongest voltage they located my station. It's obvious to me that if they could locate me with such primitive equipment, the FCC could have done so very easily.

The friend that chased me down had also operated a pirate radio station, he lived just a few blocks from the high school I went to. It was at a very low elevation and the ground was very damp. The excellent ground conductivity allowed his very low power station to get a pretty good range. His transmitter was essentially built from table radio parts, it used a 50C5, a common audio output tube in what was known as all American five tube table radios, in a simple power oscillator configuration. It probably had about a watt of output.

My station also started out as a converted table radio, initially operating on shortwave bands, then later the AM broadcast band at 1200 khz. When operating on the AM broadcast band I used a number of converted and home made transmitters. All except for the very last one was tube based.

The first AM transmitter I can remember running was a very crudely converted DX40 HAM transmitter. I say crudely converted because the way I got the final Pi section to tune down into the AM band was to stuff the ferrite cores from AM radio antennas into the coil, and add some fixed capacitors to bring it down into the AM broadcast band range. The oscillator was a simple LC oscillator which had a lot to be desired in terms of frequency stability. I used an audio output transformer backwards driven by a tube audio amplifier backwards for modulation.

Friends and myself built a studio in my parents basement. It was not a bad setup actually. We first borrowed some broadcast turntables from the high school radio station, then when we needed to give those back, we bought some used. The ones we got used were pretty tacky by contrast but they worked. The microphone stand was a converted lamp, you know the ones with the spring loaded booms. We hung the RCA 77-DX microphone where the lamp socket and reflector would have been.

I made regular trips to various broadcast stations in the area and got to know the engineers. We were able to obtain for free or very low prices used broadcast equipment, friends also helped obtain equipment through their connections.

From KGA, a station that was on 770Khz and was the only AM station to use a horizontal long wire antenna instead of a vertically polarized tower in the area, I obtained a Langevine compressor / limiter which we modified for asymmetrical limiting (so it would only limit on negative audio peaks but not positive) and a faster attack and release time so that it really squashed the audio good. We used an oscilloscope to set the modulation so the negative peaks would approach but not exceed 100% in order to avoid splatter. If you overmodulate an AM signal, the carrier can't go less than zero so the audio signal is very abruptly clipped at that point generating high order harmonics that interfere with neighboring stations.

We tried very hard to keep the station operating technically very clean to avoid causing interference and avoid drawing the wrath of the FCC, we ran at this power level for nearly five years before a broken antenna mistuned the final state of the transmitter resulting in third harmonic interference to the 80 meter ham band, and that is what finally got the unwanted attention of the FCC.

Until that event we operated much of the time 24 hours a day with friends volunteering for various air shifts. We gave out our telephone number over the air so the FCC wouldn't have even had to use directional locating if they wanted to bust us. They never did, in spite of playing Dave Clark Five's "Catch Us If You Can" as a bit of a taunt. Initially we used to call letters "KFUN", but then found out that there was a legitimate station with that call and so switched to "KDXS".

As I mentioned, our first transmitter was a crudely modified DX-40. Later we refined that into a less crudely modified DX-40, actually calculating the proper values for the final Pi section, ordered a high quality 1200 Khz crystal with the tightest specification we could get without a crystal oven. One of my friends had access to a well calibrated frequency counter (it used a 10 Mhz reference oscillator which you could verify was accurate by zero-beating with WWV) so we were able to very accurately trim our transmitters output frequency. We designed the final Pi section to have a high-Q and used high quality silver plated components, some of which were purchased new and some scarfed from military surplus, so that harmonic suppression and stability of this new transmitter was good.

Then I built a new transmitter from scratch, making the chassis in metal shop at school. At this time I was in 9th grade, still going to Jane Adams Jr. High but also went across the street to the high school for the radio class. So I enjoyed having access to metal shop and electronics classes at the same time. The new transmitter used much healthier tubes for the output and modulation. Although it ran with a similar power input as old transmitter, the audio section was far more powerful, we had about twice the audio power as plate input power so the transmitter was capable of very high levels of modulation. The modulation transformer was actually designed for the purpose so the audio quality of this transmitter was much superior. I also obtained an equipment rack and we had the whole works rack mounted.

I nearly electrocuted myself during the construction of this beast. The power supply was external and the plate voltage for the audio section (811B's) was 1200 volts, 600 volts for the finals (807B's), (and yes I do realize this is above the rated maximum plate voltages for these tubes but they ran fine this way). The connector for power I wired incorrectly swapping the pins for ground and +1200 volts resulting in a 1200 volt potential between the transmitter chassis and the power supply chassis. The power supply used solid state rectifiers so it was instantly on when turned on and had a metal on/off toggle switch.

I was building this in radio class at school. While leaning on the transmitter chassis with my left hand, and with a pair of wire cutters in my right hand, I switched the power supply on with my right hand. Instantly I had 1200 volts surging from my left to right hand, exactly the worst situation to be in with electricity since it puts the current right through the heart. The rapid contraction of the muscles in my arm launched the wire cutters into the overhead fluorescent lamps which then rained down pieces of glass. Somehow my heart kept beating through it all. I got chewed out by the instructor and got a small burn on the finger operating the toggle switch, but otherwise survived.

This transmitter in combination with the modified limiter that allowed audio peak excursions to go where they will and only limited negative peaks, resulted in a very loud but still clean sounding signal. It made the signal listenable at distances that otherwise would have been more marginal. With this transmitter we were able to cover from approximately where the old Rainier Brewery used to be in Seattle up to downtown Everett, the signal was very marginal at those extremes, not a signal that the average radio would pick up but a good communications receiver could still make it out.

We constructed a huge outdoor long wire antenna by running a wire from the corner of my house to a high spot in a pine tree nearly a block away with the permission of the neighbors inbetween. In the tree we put a pully and attached the wire via an egg insulator to flexible steel wire that went through the pully and then was weighted by a cinder block. This way as the tree moved in the wind, the pully / weight system would keep a constant tension on the wire.

Then I obtained surplus this massive KARR marine transmitter that was originally in service for the Alaska Marine Operator, a service allowing marine customers to talk to land based telephones. It used 3 4-400A's in the final and two 4-400A's in the modulator section.

In my opinion this was kind of backwards since the modulators operated in class AB and thus dissipated far more heat than the finals operating in class C mode. Class AB is a mode where the tubes are always conducting somewhat, it is push-pull and each tube is essentially responsible for half of the audio wave form. It is not very efficient. Class C is a mode where the tubes only conduct for a small portion of the RF cycle and they are essentially either not conducting or conducting hard so there is little power dissipation and high efficiency.

This transmitter might have been capable of several kilowatts if we could actually get power to it but probably wouldn't have been able to fully modulate at that power level. It was designed for 208 volt three phase operation, but since we didn't have three phase power we wired the plate transformer using just two sections of the core instead of three and fed it with a 220 volt 20 AMP circuit. We had Murry magnetic breakers which have a tweakable trip threshold and we were able to crank it up to about 25 AMPS. The modulation transformer was designed only for voice 300 Hz - 3 Khz voice operation and because of this it didn't have enough turns for bass and when hit with heavy bass it would cause the modulator tubes to draw large amounts of current and trip the breaker. Between the modulation transformer being inadequate and not being able to get more power to it we were limited to about a kilowatt in practical terms.

We didn't normally run this transmitter because I thought we'd have the FCC at our door very soon if we did. It intended to induce such a strong RF signal in things that anything with an audio amplifier would only get our station. I had a loop antenna with a seven watt Christmas lamp on it that I could carry around and it would light up the lamp. So it was a transmitter we mainly fired up for special occasions.
When it was running our signal instead of being marginal at the Rainier brewery and downtown Everett was actually fairly listenable.

This transmitter was technically a pretty clean transmitter with high quality LARGE silver plated coils and capacitors in the final, all of which was in an RF cage inside of another RF cage to minimize signal leakage directly from the transmitter. But at that power level any non-linear surface generated harmonics, and poorly shielded consumer equipment was just completely overwhelmed. When we'd fire this puppy up we were guaranteed an audience because anyone in the immediate vicinity couldn't get anything else. So obviously operating at that power level in a densely populated residential neighborhood was not practical for any length of time, normally we operated with the smaller transmitter at about 100 watts.

At the time, this was before Washington State passed the inventory tax, nearly all the major record labels distributed out of Seattle, and we were able to get record support from almost all of them. Jerry Morris who distributed Capital records I believe, he was just the coolest. MCA was the stingiest. This was before they were part of Warner / Elektra / Atlantic (who were also pretty good to us). We also got records from the high school station when they retired them, and from some of the broadcast stations in the area when they retired them. In addition one friendly engineer of a popular Seattle Top-40 station allowed us to tape music in one of the stations production rooms.

Initially we operated at 1200 Khz which at the time was a clear channel and the only other station in the country using it was WOAI in San Antonio, TX. But another friend that ran a pirate station about four miles away also used this frequency using the call letters KLK. For a while we shared the frequency scheduling our transmissions to avoid colliding but later we ended up moving our station to 1210 Khz to avoid interference.

We mostly played music though we also did comedy skits and sometimes we'd put callers on the air randomly. At one point we made silly prank calls on the air, dialing numbers at random and asking people if their (name the appliance) was running and if so they better go catch it. One lady we called answered the phone not with hello but with "I use a carpet sweeper". Which for some reason we found amusing so we would call her periodically and air the conversation. And then there was fun things you could do with a telephone back then. Sears used to have this old mechanical Centrex, and any non-assigned numbers would be routed to a recording and would not give answer supervision (off-hook indication) thus it would allow you to call from anywhere in the world and not get charged. The recording would die periodically and this was well known to the phone phreakers. There was not good isolation between the channels so people calling could take to each other. Phone Phreakers would call from all over and we'd put it on the air.

I narrowly escaped trouble twice. On one occasion the FCC came to my house but the transmitter was not on and I was not home. My sister answered the door and they asked her how big the transmitter was. She assumed the big one, about the side of a large refrigerator, was the one we normally used and described it. Apparently the FCC engineers made a funny expression after this. But oddly enough we never received any notice from them at that point or verbal warning.

What did finally get the F.C.C's attention in a negative way was an incident in which the antenna broke. I went in and noticed the plate current was way high and re-dipped it and didn't think much of it, just figured someone bumped the knob or something, but it turned out that the antenna had broken and when I returned the transmitter it was playing tripler and broadcasting on the third harmonic which fell smack in the middle of the 80 meter ham band. I received a letter from R.C. Dietch who was the chief FCC engineer at the Seattle field office advising me that the FCC had received not one but three complaints of interference to the 80 meter ham band and that if we did not immediately correct the interference we would be liable for a $20,000 fine and/or two years imprisonment. Oddly enough the letter did not say anything about illegal broadcasting or order us to cease and desist, it just said stop the interference.

But, I had my first class radio operators license (had just obtained it) and knew that if I was apprehended the punishment would have been particular severe because I couldn't claim ignorance. That was before the days of Ron Bailey and similar broadcast schools, back then you actually had to understand the material to pass the test. I wasn't overly concerned about imprisonment because I was a minor at the time, and I didn't have any money for them to take, but because I would likely lose my license if caught I decided to terminate illegal broadcast operations at that time. It was a long run, a fun run, but the illegal aspect was over at that time.

I mentioned other friends involved in pirate radio. One of them operated a station in Bothell Washington on the FM broadcast band. Prior to operating that station he lived in a different location and ran a bootleg AM station using a military surplus transmitter. He operated the station on 1570 Khz and there was a legitimate station, KUUU at the time, on 1590 Khz. The engineer of KUUU lived in the same area and his station was interfered with by the station my friend ran there. He had climbed up a steel power line tower and ran a wire down to his window for an antenna. The FCC visited him in response to the engineers complaint and informed him that he could not operate an AM broadcast station without a license. This all happened before I met him.

I met him in much the same way the other friend that tracked our station found me. I was tuning around in the FM broadcast band with a Sony Earth Orbiter radio and ran across his signal. It did not read on the S-meter but did achieve full quieting.

The sound quality was horrid, that was the first clue that it wasn't a legal station. I listened for a while and like us he gave out his phone number over the air. He also had a group of friends volunteering to do shifts and ran the station long hours.
I called and after some discussion he agreed to allow us to visit and we went out and met and saw his operation.

It was all operated out of a very jammed bedroom. In his bedroom, in addition to his bed, he had a radio studio setup, the transmitter, another military surplus unit with a welding rod stuck in the antenna jack, and he was also an artist with an easel, and numerous drawing supplies. There were clothes and records and paper strewn all over. He would sleep in his bed with the lights on while someone else did a night shift on the station. There were half-eaten cheeseburgers and spilled milkshakes and God only knows what all else on the floor with various fungus specimens growing out of the pile.

He and his group of friends were quite creative and good at production, so the programming on his station was quite entertaining. He had little technical knowledge however and so the transmitter, in addition to being designed for narrow band voice modulation instead of wide band high fidelity with preemphasis, was also in a bad state of disrepair.

So myself and a friend of mine who was technically sharp modified his transmitter for him rebuilding the oscillator / modulator section to accommodate wide-band modulation. The final was a push-pull final using an 829B tube. This is a tube with dual power tetrodes I think, in one envelope. A grid resistor had failed and opened up on one side so the final was only operating on one section, essentially at half-power and higher harmonic output (push pull finals cancel the even order harmonics). We fixed the grid resistor as well. Then we built him a dipole antenna with a coaxial balun, that we put up on his roof. I also lent him a gates limiter I had borrowed from the high school, we had obtained the Langevine so didn't need the Gates. The Gates wasn't ideal as it was designed for AM and thus didn't make allowances for preemphasis, but it was better than nothing.

After these modifications, his signal which previously didn't read on my S-meter now pegged it seven miles away. And the audio sounded good. It was monaural but otherwise sounded good.

All went well until a kid at school heard about it. This particular individual was mentally handicapped, I don't know exactly what was wrong with him but he'd do things like smoke three cigarettes at the same time because he thought it was cool. He was not a complete idiot but he was slow and socially awkward. He wanted to be involved in the station and the rest of us didn't want to be so someone told him the station was down in Auburn, about 40 miles south of where it really was. Angry, he called the FCC and informed them of the operation. They apparently chased it down all the way from Auburn out to Bothell where it was located.

The engineer was the same person that had busted him running the AM station. They told him when we said you needed a license to operate an AM station it didn't mean you could operate an FM station without a license. The engineer then did a weird thing and smashed the 829B final tube. This wasn't a hugely expensive item, a replacement could have been easily obtained, but by this time my friend had his third class license and didn't want to lose it. So he wrote a very apologetic letter to the FCC and ceased operating. They never replied or contacted him again.



Clipperton Island




And the friend that operated the pirate station also on 1200 Khz, he also operated a shortwave station on two frequencies twice a day. They called it the RX4M The Voice of Clipperton. Clipperton Island (pictured above) is a little atoll a couple hundred feet long and maybe 50 feet wide and about a foot above sea level at the highest point. Nobody lived there except some birds nesting. It was occasionally visited by scientists. He got QSL reports from all over the globe with this operation but also eventually got a visit from the FCC. It's unfortunate that he was captured, amounts the lot of us, his operation was undoubtably the most well known and for good reason, in spite of primative equipment, the production was great. Unlike the rest of us who only received warnings, he was fined $750 at the time (counting for inflation that's probably equivalent to about $2000 today).

After the interference warning I got from the FCC, we decided to try to do things within the letter of the law but totally skirt the intent of limiting coverage to about 300 feet. Part 15 rules allowed a couple of options, you could either limit power to 100 mw and not use an antenna longer than 10 feet (including the ground lead) or you could meet field strength limits. I questioned the FCC about whether final input power was measured with our without modulation. They told me that was the input power without modulation.

Ok, damn here was an opportunity. First, we shifted to 660 khz for this. That channel was quieter than 1200 / 1210 Khz and for some reason the lower frequencies tended to propagate better at the time. First we went to a type of antenna known as a British joystick. This is basically a an insulted form wound with a coil of wire and a capacitive hat at the top. This allowed the antenna to be resonant at 660 khz in spite of only being ten feet long. This had the effect of making it much more efficient than a simple ten foot piece of wire would be. With this antenna we could actually receive our signal several miles away with a transmitter using 100 mw dc input to the RF final.

But there was room for improvement. We designed a solid state final that when the modulation approached 100% on the negative swing the final power would increase to contain the negative swing essentially. In other words, there was a positive increase in power level as modulation approached 100% such that modulation would not increase above 100% as audio level increased but power would go up. This only scaled to a couple of watts though owing to the selection of RF output transistor and components. With very squashed audio from our modified compressor / limiter, it would essentially keep the transmitter at max output of several watts with modulation but lacking modulation it would be 100 mw. There was nothing in the part 15 specification that dealt with carrier shift so we made a transmitter intentionally with lots.

But this didn't really buy us much and besides the funky way it would interact with AGC on AM radios made it sound crappy. At some point I had also heard of carrier current, where an AM signal is put into the power lines of a building so that radios within the building can pick it up. Normally such an arrangement is limited to the building because the pole transformers won't pass the higher RF frequency. However, City Light, the power company in this region, has a funky arrangement where they tie the secondaries of the pole transformers together. That is, in addition to running the 2200 volt or whatever it is that feeds the primary of the pole pigs, they also ran three additional wires, ground and the two 117 volt opposite phases so the secondaries of all the transformers were paralleled. That way, if one had a particularly heavy load, it would spread the load to it's neighbors to some degree, or if one failed, the houses served would still get AC power via the neighboring transformers.

So, I thought here is an opportunity to use carrier current in a way it was never intended. Carrier current also has power limits, I think around one watt but I do not remember the specifics, or field strength limitations. It occurred to me that we could use the power lines like a balanced transmission line, feeding opposite polarities of RF signal into the two 117 volt lines relative to ground, and that, being out of phase, the radiated signals would largely cancel. So we measured the impedance of the lines to ground at 660 Khz, and built a torroidal RF transformer to match the 52 ohms output of the transmitter to the power line.

This indeed did work to a degree. Using the earth orbiter radio as a primitive field strength meter, I found that the signal levels were actually higher about a block away from the house in either direction than right at the house. Apparently the lines tended to become increasingly unbalanced at that frequency with distance. We experimented with a the big kilowatt transmitter this way but when we operated it into the power lines, the lights in our house and the neighbors house (incandescent) would be blue-white bright and flash with the modulation. The stove sang loudly, the TV didn't have recognizable video just black-n-white diagonal lines, anything with an audio amplifier in it only got our station. In fact most of the appliances sang, you could hear the high frequencies of the audio come from them. And just about anything metallic, if you touched it lightly with your finger you would get an RF burn.

Now we knew we weren't anywhere near the legal field strength limits at this power level, however, since the fields were actually HIGHER outside a block away and there was no external antenna or other visible signs of the operation I figured that we were pretty safe but complaints from my mother, sister, and neighbors forced the shutdown of the big transmitter. We operated the lower power transmitter for a while, with less negative effects, the lights only mildly flickered with the modulation, the TV was watchable though it still had some bars through it, and you could still here our station in anything with an audio amplifier but at that power level it was in the background instead of the foreground.

With that setup we really found two major problems, for one thing we didn't get good range because most of the RF power was eaten up heating light bulb filaments and the like rather than being radiated, and there are so many non-linear devices on the powerline that would cause intermodulation between the RF signal and the 60 Hz power, that at many locations there would be bad hum / buzz in the received audio. So this was a relatively short-lived experiment.

We also experimented with something called a ghost line. Apparently during world war I, enemies would cut telegraph lines, so a method was devised to send telegraph signals through the earth. At both ends, a couple of stakes would be driven into the ground several hundred yards apart with the line connecting them perpendicular to the direction the other station was in. Then a large power supply or battery bank would be keyed into the resistance between the stakes via a large but sufficiently fast relay.

At the receiving end, a sensitive relay would be able to get a portion of that current because the earth basically acted like a resistive network dividing the voltage. And so Morse code could be sent through the earth without the benefit of wires that could be cut by the enemy.

I thought it would be interesting to try this at audio frequencies, so I put two stakes about 100 feet apart in my yard, east-west, and used a PA line transformer to match the output of my Radio Shack STA-2000 stereo into the ground stakes.

Then I took a portable cassette recorder and connected a couple of wires with small stakes into the microphone input and walked north. With the stakes at the receiving end feeding the microphone jack of the cassette recorder only about six feet apart when I'd stick them in the ground, I was able to hear the audio up to two miles away. At two miles there was a lot of AC buzz competing with the audio. I had ideas that maybe I could get around the buzz and achieve longer distances by using an FM carrier at around 50 Khz or so. I figured between the noise reducing effects of limiting, and getting away from the 60 Hz area where the noise concentrated it might be workable. I attempted to build circuitry to do this but was never successful at getting it to work.

This was an era before PC's existed, maybe just after the Altair computer kits and Commodore Pet hit the market. No Internet back at that time. I wanted to broadcast, but I couldn't seem to find an effective way to do it legally. And nothing was the same as the old AM bootleg station.

There is something magical about AM, as if your voice not only goes out into space, but as if it's actually transversing dimensions. It's hard to explain, it's something you have to feel. It's organic. FM transmissions, today's digital systems, technically they are superior but they are sterile, inorganic, the magic that is in AM is not there with these systems. The way you can receive AM stations from all over and even outside the country at night and one would fade in and out, you never knew, especially at night, where your voice was going.

And music... Not the same sound quality as FM, but again, it's organic via AM, sterile via FM. Hard to describe what I mean by that, you'd have to have been there and done it.

And really that was a magic era in radio, radio is crap now, automated syndicated crap. The magic is gone. I'd kill for real shot at an opportunity to bring it back, well maybe not kill, but I can't think of anything I'd rather do.

Big Bang Cosmology

What does it mean for space-time itself to expand? Expand into what? What caused the big bang? What caused inflation? If time itself began with the big bang then how could the big bang "start" before time existed? How can we have cause and effect without time?

The big bang theory of the universe has much in common with the Universe of Aristotle and Ptolemy of the solar system.



Aristotle and Ptolemy held that the sun and all of the planets orbited the earth. We can see exactly the same distance, and by extension time, in all directions. The microwave background glow is nearly uniform in all directions. Again we find ourselves at the center of the universe.

They relied upon epicycles, circular orbits within circular orbits, to explain the motions of the Sun and planets around the earth. Modern cosmology requires a cosmically constant, dark matter, dark energy, inflation, and expansion. No combination of cosmological constant value, age of the universe, and matter within the universe, dark matter and dark energy included, can simultaneously be self-consistent and consistent with the observed universe.

The net effect of a positive cosmological constant is to create a negative gravitational force that drives the expansion of the universe. As the universe expands, matter and energy are spread out over more physical space and thus their gravitational attraction is diminished.

The work done by the vacuum during expansion provides exactly the amount of energy to fill the new volume to the same density, therefore the cosmological constant remains constant and by extension the repulsive gravitational force driving expansion remains constant while gravitational attraction diminishes as matter and energy become less dense.

This conflicts with another ad-hoc requirement of the big bang theory, inflation, a period of rapid expansion. If the cosmological constant remains truly constant and thus it's gravitational repulsive force remains constant, then what we should observe is a logarithmic increase in the expansion rate from the point of the big bang forward which is inconsistent with inflation.

Decades ago I read a book by Eric Learner entitled, "The Big Bang Never Happened". The central thesis of the book is that the universe is a "steady-state" universe that has always and will always exist. While there were some errors of logic, the view presented of a possible steady state universe is interesting if incomplete.

An element of his theory was that electromagnetic forces play a far greater role in the evolution of the universe than do gravitational forces. This mechanism allowed for example the transfer of angular momentum from young rapidly rotating stars to a forming planetary system.

Eric postulates some mechanism gradually reduces a photons energy over distance other than Doppler shift caused by the motion of expansion. This is referred to as the "tired light" theory. Quantized red shift red shift and descrepencies between the red shifts in cores of spiral galaxies and their spiral arms supports this notion. And yes I do realize you get Doppler broadening because of the rotation of the galaxies.

When I saw the first Hubble deep field images, the galaxies I saw were markedly different than modern galaxies, oddly shaped, irregular, and clumpy. For a long time that shifted my perspective away from a steady state universe. If not a big bang, there appeared at least to be a universe that had undergone substantial evolution over time.



But then I saw images of nearby galaxies in ultraviolet light. Low and behold, they were oddly shaped, irregular, and clumpy. In fact they looked amazingly like the galaxies in the deep field hubble images. And then it occurred to me the deep field images taken in visible light were actually seeing extreme UV from the distant galaxies red shifted into the visible spectrum. The reason these galaxies appeared oddly shaped, irregular, and clumpy is because looking in the visible spectrum here, we are only seeing the regions of active star formation with young very hot stars which have substantial spectral output in the extreme UV range. The major portions of those galaxies were invisible to us looking at them in the visible spectrum.

When the first deep field images came back from the Spitzer, looking at the far infrared light, light that originated as visible light when it left those distant galaxies, what I saw were large spiral galaxies and other familiar forms. The universe then looked very much as it does today.

Carbon monoxide has been detected in the spectrum of the oldest quasar examined. Big bang theorists suggest that this is because the first generation of stars were very massive and short lived and rapidly converted hydrogen to heavy elements, exploded into super novas and distributed these elements throughout the early universe. But an alternate explanation is that the metalicy of the universe has been maintained roughly constant through some unknown mechanism over the eons.

"But we see a lot of other elements around those early quasars," Fan said. "We see evidence of carbon, nitrogen, iron and other elements, and it’s not clear how these elements got there. There is as much iron, proportionate to the population of those early systems, as there is in mature galaxies nearby."

This doesn't seem to argue for a big bang followed by a universe in which hydrogen is converted to heavy elements in stars. It would seem that there is some mechanism maintaining some sort of equilibrium, removing heavy elements and providing fresh hydrogen over the possibly unbounded life of the universe. If that is the case it also favors the idea that what we see when we look out 13.6 billion light years is a horizon of sorts. The universe might be infinite, or merely more enourmous than we presently appreciate.

Nuclear Fission

Nuclear fission will continue to play an increasingly important role in meeting our energy needs in the short term (say over the next 50 years). There is just no other energy source presently available that can replace fossil fuels fast enough.

We have created large quantities of nuclear waste that will take tens of thousands of years to decay. Yucca mountain storage for 20,000 years is not a viable solution. Civilizations do not last tens of thousands of years.

The PUREX reprocessing cycle recovers only uranium and plutonium and extracts only 5% of the energy potential of the initial uranium or thorium fuel.

PUREX processing produces pure uranium and plutonium that can be used to make bombs.

Pyrometallic reprocessing combined with generation VI reactors can extract 95% of the potential energy from nuclear fuel, producing only 5% of the waste which decays to safe levels in 300 years instead of 20,000. Uranium, plutonium and the rest of the actinides are extracted together. This combination can then be re-used in a sodium cooled fast reactor but is unsuitable for nuclear weapons.

Uranium 235 and plutonium 239 are fissionable with slow neutrons in conventional reactors but many of the other actinides are not. All actinides are fissionable in a sodium cooled fast reactor.

After the actinides are extracted from spent fuel the remaining waste consists of fission products which decay to safe levels within 300 years.

Building pyrometallic reprocessing facilities and generation IV sodium cooled fast reactor turns our nuclear waste burden into a vast energy resource for current and future generations.

Yucca mountain would make an excellent location for a generation IV reactor farm. The repository was already designed to contain wastes for ten thousand years, it could also contain a potential nuclear accident should the reactors not live up to the safety expectations of their designers.

By locating a large number of reactors in one location we can reduce the overall expense of the operation. The same reprocessing facilities can be used to process spent fuel for all the reactors eliminating any risks associated with the transportation of high level radioactive wastes and the fission products that will be left can be stored on site. When it is time for the reactors to be decommissioned, they too will already be at a nuclear waste storage facility.

I encourage you to write your congress critters and suggest this. An energy rich America will be an economically prosperous America, and we can export this technology to foreign countries reducing the risk of nuclear proliferation abroad will allowing it's use for power generation displacing fossil fuel power generation and greenhouse gases.

Practical Electric Car

There is a type of cell known as Redox Flow or Vanadium Fuel Cell. A conventional battery has solid electrodes such as lead that participate in the chemical reaction and an electrolyte that serves as an ion transport medium. A redox flow cell by contrast has a solid ionic membrane that permits the exchange of ions but not electrons and two liquid electrolyte compartments. Carbon electrodes are used to connect electrically to the electrolyte but they do not participate in the chemical reaction.

The electrolyte consists of vanadium sulfate in different oxidation states. In the positive electrolyte vanadium has an oxidation state of V5+ when charged and V4+ when discharged, in the negative electrolyte vanadium has an oxidation state of V2+ when charged and V3+ when the cell is discharged.

There is a design by which a lot of these cells can easily be placed in series to obtain the required output voltage (1.6 volts per cell charged, 1.1 volts discharged).

The only limit to the capacity of the battery is the size of the electrolyte tanks. The power output is limited by the active area of the membrane. Because the active chemicals do not undergo a phase transition between liquid and solid as they do in lead acid cells the cell does not deteriorate with charge discharge cycles. The self discharge rate is also extremely low.

My idea is that these could be used in an electric car. And then you'd have an infrastructure where instead of plugging them in and charging them, when you've discharged the electrolytes you go to a recharge station and the spent electrolyte is drained from tanks and fresh electrolyte supplied. The spent electrolyte is then recharged in a large stationary cell at the station during power off-peak times.

At the risk of a slightly more complex filling system (because it also has to accommodate draining and keep the positive electrolyte separate from the negative), you can have the convenience of a gasoline car but powered by electricity, and the exchangeable electrolyte system would allow charging to occur during off-peak hours regardless of when you actually refill the vehicle.

I do not know the energy density or power density of this type of battery and as a result I do not know if size and weight limitations would render it impractical for vehicle propulsion. Nearly all the information I can find is intended for stationary applications such as power load leveling where size and weight are not important considerations.

I also do not know how dangerous vanadium sulfate salts would be if released in an automotive accident. I'd love to here from someone knowledgeable on these issues that could supply this data.

Peak Oil, Energy, Economy, Population

Peak Oil, Domestic Energy, US Economy, World Population, Global Warming...

All of these things are linked. Energy consumption scales with gross national product. While it is true that some improvements in efficiency have resulted in greater gross national product per unit of energy, ultimately, energy limits our economic growth and the economic growth of the world.

If immigration is not counted, population growth in virtually all developed countries is negative. That is, populations in developed countries is declining with the exception of immigration from lesser developed regions.

In third world countries, social support for the aging is the family, the children. People want to have lots of children to take care of them in their old age. In developed countries, social support has been replaced by institutions that provide this function so the incentive to have lots of children for a secure old age is reduced or eliminated. In developed countries, many people opt not to have children at all.

The "kind" solution to world overpopulation is to improve the economic conditions in developing countries so that people have more than is needed for basic real time survival and can put resources into the types of institutions present in developed countries to address the needs of the elderly and disabled.

I am sure by now that everyone is familiar with the "peak oil" hypothesis, that once approximately half of the recoverable oil has been extracted, production will start to decline. And during that decline economic chaos will ensue.

In truth there is much oil that can be extracted. But there is a problem of refinery capacity and particularly the capacity to deal with the type of oil that remains in large quantities.

Crude oil can be "light" or "heavy" meaning it either has a mixture of relatively small hydrocarbon molecules, and consequently a low viscosity, or it has a mixture of heavier molecules which give it a higher viscosity. Light crude is easier to extract because of it's low viscosity. Heavier crude may require heating to lower it's viscosity for extraction, or injecting steam, or pressurization with say carbon dioxide to force it out. Real heavy hydrocarbons, tars, may require mining rather than drilling to extract.

Crude oil can also be "sweet" meaning it is low in sulfur and other contaminates, or "sour" meaning it is high in sulfur content.

Heavy crude is more expensive to refine because it requires cracking, a process that breaks longer molecules into shorter lighter molecules, to produce commonly useful products such as gasoline and diesel fuel. Cracking breaks heavier molecules with typically 20 carbon atoms into lighter hydrocarbons with 5-10 atoms, referred to as the naphtha fraction, that are used in gasoline. Cracking also requires the addition of hydrogen to the open end of the carbon chain. This is usually done by using steam in the cracking process so that the steam can donate hydrogen atoms. A certain percentage of the carbon is also oxidized into CO and CO2 in this process, and as a result of this and the need to provide heat for the process, a portion of the crudes energy potential is lost in this process.

Sulfur when burned produces sulfur dioxide which then reacts with water vapor in the atmosphere to produce sulfurous and sulfuric acid. This rains out turning lakes into an acid bath killing wildlife, trees, whatever it falls on. Consequently environmental regulations require a low sulfur content in fuel and the limits on sulfur content are being further reduced to negate environmental consequences.

Since refineries have to remove this sulfur from sour crude, this represents an additional processing step requiring energy.

So oil companies prefer to feed their refineries sweet light crude. They can get the most refined product at the lowest cost from sweet light crude. In addition, refineries have to be designed to handle heavy sour crude in order to be able to effectively process it.

Easy to get at sweet light crude is the oil that is running out, and most of what is left is in the middle east. But heavy sour crude is abundant elsewhere in the world. In the United States we have huge reserves in the form of oil shale and tar sands. Venezuela has huge reserves of heavy crude as does Canada.

The extraction technology has improved to the point where these heavy oils an be extracted economically however, adequate refinery capacity to refine these heavy, usually sour crudes, into finished products does not exist.

Oil companies are reluctant to invest in this capacity unless they are convinced that conventional sweet light crude will stay at high prices. If they invest heavily in such capacity and sweet light crude drops back to $30 a barrel, their investments will not be worth much as they will not be able to compete economically against products refined from sweet light cheap crude.

This combined with increasing demand from India and China where economic growth and the desire of people there to own cars and live the lifestyle enjoyed elsewhere in the developed world, is where our current pain at the pump largely originates.

The military adventurism and cowboy diplomacy of the current administration, the heightened level of conflict between Israel and the rest of the Arab world, civil unrest in Nigeria, also contribute to market jitters that inflate prices.

But even if all these issues went away tomorrow and the oil companies decided that sweet light crude was going to remain expensive and invested in the necessary refinery capacity, and the price of gasoline dropped out of the stratosphere, we'd still have all the environmental consequences related to the combustion of these fuels.

This ultimately will limit economic growth to levels that will not allow substantial portions of the world to rise out of poverty. And without poverty being addressed, we will continue to have population growth and every increasing stress on our ecosphere.

What we need are clean, sustainable, environmentally friendly energy sources that can be exploited without substantial limits or environmental impact. There may be no one energy source that can fulfill all of our needs but there are so many that collectively we have the potential to live in energy abundance.

Middle East Distress

I am more than a little unhappy about what is happening in the middle east.

I think for anyone to believe we have any reason for being there other than obtaining cheap oil that the oil companies can then sell for exhorbitant prices is ludicrous.

If we had spent the money we spent just the first year prosecuting the war in Iraq on wind turbines, we would have displaced the energy equivalent of all the oil we obtain from the middle east, permanently.

But you can't power your car with wind turbines you say? Well, no not unless your car is electric. But you displace natural gas that is presently being used for electricity generation. That natural gas can be converted into liquid fuels using Syntroleum's process.

I believe our foreign policy towards Israel is heavily skewed by our dependence upon middle eastern oil and eliminating that dependence would allow us a more balanced foreign policy and eliminate incentives people have for coming here and blowing things up.

The situation between Irael and the Palestinians is horrid, Israel seems to think that the holocaust they experienced at the hands of the Germans justified the same treatment by them of the Palestinians. They bulldoze homes with families in them, shoot their kids, restrict their travel, and then they wonder why things get blown up.

The way you treat people has ramifications. We can't treat the middle east the way we have and not expect things like 9/11 to happen. And no amount of border security or police state will prevent it, just as it does not prevent it in Israel.

I am not looking forward to a camera on every corner and maybe an RFID chip injected into everybody with constant monitoring of everyone. Not my idea of fun. I am already less than thrilled about warrantless phone taps, about databases containing every call I and you have ever made, about Internet monitoring and secret censorship.

Blogging...

I've been looking for blogging software for some time. I knew about blogger.com but didn't realize it had an option for posting elsewhere. It does and the option seems to work perfectly with eskimo's setup.

Blogger is at: www.blogger.com

It's free, except that they tag advertisements onto your site. Well that's reasonable I think given what you get for free.

To publish on Eskimo North, you just need to decide where you want to put your blog, for example, your website is public_html in your home directory. Since I had other things on my website that I did not want to disturb, I created a subdirectory for the blog.

mkdir public_html/blog

Blogger.com will ask for the publishing path, if you make a subdirectory like I did, you would specify this like:

public_html/blog/

Then it will ask for the main blog file, I used index.html (which will be written in the blog directory not in your main public_html if you used a subdirectory like I did). If you want the blog to BE your website, then you can just put it directly under public_html, but I wanted it just to be a portion of my website.

Then when you create the blog on blogger.com use the advanced publishing options. It will ask for the ftp server, put in: ftp.eskimo.com.

Then it will need your login and password. That is your login and password you use on eskimo for host functions. Blogger.com uses this to login to our ftp server and upload the blogs.

You can post your blog from blogger.com's website, or you can setup e-mail blogging where you can just e-mail postings to an address setup for your blog.

You'll also need to select a template, this controls the basic look and feel. You can edit the template if none of the pre-created templates fit your liking.

Then you select post, and after you are done, publish post. You will need to publish your entire blog to save other changes, such as changes to template, etc.

All in all it's an extremely easy way to create a blog. I'd still like to find some software that would work properly locally so I don't have to have the advertisements or the potential for censorship.
