Welcome to Fel's guide to IRC! This is the MemoServ section of our tutorial. Also available for your pleasure are tutorial documents for NickServ, ChanServ, and Channels and Channel Op Status. You can get copies of these documents from the channels #NewNetHelp and #Services on NewNet, and from Fel himself. |

MemoServ, the last of the service bots, is a rather helpful little fellow. He is NewNet's postman, taking, storing, and delivering the messages that users leave one another. When you need to talk to someone, but he's not on IRC, MemoServ is there to take your note and hold it until he arrives.
MemoServ is probably the easiest to use of all the service bots, but, like his brother
ChanServ, he is a bit picky in that he will only store and
deliver messages to people who have their nicknames registered with NickServ.
And you have to have your nick registered with NickServ
in order to send any messages. If you don't, he'll just give you dumb looks. Or maybe pointedly
ignore you.

MemoServ is a very simple bot. He only has 5 commands: SENDThe first four are the commands you will use to send, read, and delete the notes you get or send. The fifth, NOTIFY, is a settings option that lets you choose when, or even if, you have MemoServ tell you that you have notes. With this command, you can literally tell MemoServ to bugger off: in other words, you don't want ANY messages. |

OK, you have a big meeting planned, but you haven't reached everyone yet. Someone's not on IRC, so you can't talk to him...but he needs to know about this. You need to leave him a note. And, hey, there's MemoServ kneeling at your feet, ready to carry your message faithfully. He's better than the Post Office. To send a message to someone, all you need to know is his nickname, and his nickname has to be registered. But you knew that. :) The command to send a note is this: /msg memoserv send <that person> <your message>Such as this, for example: /msg memoserv send Phoenix the channel meeting was moved from Sunday to Saturday, but it's still at 12:00pm Central Time. See you then. |

MemoServ may just send you a message telling you that you have a note. If he does, then you may want to see what it is. You may have more than one, after all. Type this command: /msg memoserv listMemoServ will give you a list of all your notes, listed by number. He will also tell you who sent you that note. To read your notes, you tell him which one you want to read: /msg memoserv read <the number of the note>And he'll give you your note. I suggest opening up a chat window (if your client has the ability), if MemoServ doesn't try to do it automatically. He'll send you your notes as a private message, and it will be easier. You can open a chat window with MemoServ by typing this: /query MemoServ |

MemoServ will hold on to a note, even after you've read it...just in case you want to read it again. You have to tell him when you don't want to keep a note anymore. You can delete only one, or all of them, as you like. This is the command: /msg memoserv del <the number of the note you want gone> To delete all of them, you use this command: /msg memoserv del allEasy, isn't it? |

You can tell MemoServ that you'd rather not be bothered. And you can tell him when and how you want your messages, if you're taking them. That's what the NOTIFY command is here to do for you. There are 4 options you can use for the notify...when you tell MemoServ how he may kneel down and kiss your feet. The first two are ON and OFF. On says "yes, I'm taking memos". Off tells MemoServ to leave you alone. You won't accept messages, and anyone who tries to send you a message will get a notice from MemoServ saying that you aren't taking any messages. If you have notify ON, you can further customize when and how you get messages. That's what the other two settings are for. The first is LOGON. This tells MemoServ to only send you notices of new messages when you log on to the network. The last is NEW. You use this to tell MemoServ to tell you whenever you have a new message. But he'll also tell you if you have any when you log on. This is the command you will use: /msg memoserv set notify <your option, be it ON, OFF, LOGON, or NEW> |

That's about all, so far as services go. I'm certain that some of you will notice that I may have left a little thing out here and there. It may have been on purpose...or maybe it wasn't. But if you noticed it, then you can call yourself a grizzled NewNet veteran for having such a sharp eye. Remember that any time you need help, and you can't find it or you don't know what to do, an IRCop will always be there for you.
