Wrongly Flagged Off Ads

If you got a flagged off email you probably noticed the following text in it:

"If your posting was wrongly flagged down (2% of flagged ads are) please accept our apologies and feel free to repost.

Sorry for the hassle, and thanks for your understanding."

You may be thinking that your ad was one of 2%. Why not? You can't see anything wrong with it. Should you repost? Well, there are two problems to consider:.

Problem One

There may be a very real problem with your ad that you don't know about. Even if everything seems quite reasonable to you, there are a number of things to know, some of them pretty subtle. So, go back to the beginning of this FAQ and begin again and read everything. You almost always want to wait 48 hours before reposting so you aren't in a hurry. If you spot a problem, fix it if it can be fixed, wait an appropriate time and repost. If you find a problem and it cannot be fixed, post on another site. You will just get flagged off again----and again. If you can't find a problem after reading the rest of the FAQ (not skimming, read it all and understand the system AND the common/uncommon cases) then go to Problem Two, below.

Problem Two

So you read the entire FAQ and your ad still looks just fine and you're sure you have been wrongly flagged. If you really want to post the ad, go back to the beginning of this FAQ and jump to the section on More Help (but you should have read it already, right?). The FlagHelp forum is pretty good for spotting late breaking trends. Maybe the flag thresholds have dropped out of the category you are using. So you are getting sunk by very few flags, and the chances of those being "wrongly" thrown might be greater. Or maybe even after doing the L.L.L. routine and perhaps even posting in the forum you still can't find a problem.

Should you repost? Probably not. Righty or wrongly you are still getting flags and they are still enough to remove your ad. The people doing it are still out there and rightly or wrongly they are just going to flag you off again. Getting an account full of flagged ads is one way to eventually get blocked from posting (which you know about already from reading the Blocked section). So even if the Flagged Off email you got from craigslist says to feel free to repost, it's a bad idea. (So why do they say it? We don't know). You might wait a month and try again. Perhaps the flag thresholds in the category will have changed. If that doesn't work, try waiting 90 days from the last time the ad was flagged. If that doesn't work, find another site to post the ad on, it just won't fly on craigslist. Craigslist can say, "sorry for the hassle", but at some point it's more hassle than it's worth. At least you learned a lot about how it all works and that may help you in other situations.
