12/02/2003 Archived Entry: "I shouldn't be surprised"
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. But let me explain something else first.
There is something called an "admonishment" which can be done by security officers which is basically formal paperwork telling someone that they are to leave the property in question for a year. I end up admonishing a person at my work every few weeks. I don't really like doing it, not because it's scary or hard to do, but I just dislike filling out forms. I have a habit of screwing up forms.
Today I was called into a store, and found a lady obviously troubled, damaging property. There was no violence, but there was some low-key vandalism and obvious mental illness. She refused to leave. The police was called, and I began the admonishment procedure. She seemed vaguely familiar at the time, but so do so many downtown folks barely hanging on to a bare existence.
It was only afterward that I began to remember. It wasn't her face I remembered, it was her hair, manner, and build. I took a job finding workshop with her. Maybe this is a good lesson for me. She seemed OK at the workshop classes, and now she is falling apart mentally doing small-time vandalism in a store decorated for Christmas. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.
