Patlabor
There are two Patlabor movies out, Patlabor 1, and Patlabor 2. "Labors" are large industrial robots used in a Japan setting years in the future. Section 2 was set up as a police force against rogue labors, that is, labors used for illegal purposes. Imagine a giant robot in the hands of a terrorist! Yes, that's right, it's lots of fun.
The point of view is from the somewhat ragtag Section2 doing their best to fight labor crime despite being put so far in the boonies they have to resort to growing their own tomatoes and catching their own fish. As I move well into my thirties I appreciate more and more anime with characters that are not all very young. Many of the main characters are middle aged. These are truly anime movies made with good taste and brillant craftmanship through and through.
There have been many TV episodes of Patlabor released and Japan, and a limited number have come out in America subtitled and dubbed. Though I have watched the two movies Patlabor 1 and Patlabor 2 many times, I have only seen a couple of the television episodes. And these TV shows are an offshoot of the mangas which I have only read a couple. The breadth of the Patlabor literature and merchandise is really pretty amazing, and gives me hope that maybe lots of people out there get tired of over the top anime cliches, and look for insightful works like Patlabor.
