ATHENS, Dec 24 (AFP) - A court of appeal in Greece has upheld a
decision to close the Greek branch of the Church of Scientology, and
accused it of "brain-washing" members, a legal source said
Wednesday.
{} Greek Co$ branch known as the KEPHE, (i.e "centre for
applied philosphy") found guilty of proselytism, submitting its
members to brain-washing and extorting money from them..

Boy, THAT's a shocker! Can you see Miscarriage
even washing out his shorts, much less someone's brains?
	That sounds like manual labor....

The verdict affirmed a Jan. decision....

Greek Orthodox Church described the KEPHE ..."heresies"
The prosecution was brought by Athens' most senior politician.

A petition demanding the group be outlawed attracted 4,000
signatures, including parents of KEPHE members.

But where are the MILLION of Marcab signatures?

Is "proselytism" illegal in Greece?

As I understand the case, they violated the terms of being non-profit.

Probably if you do not register your organisation as a religion.
Scientology had claimed to be non-religious in Greece.

According to the story "The Colonels and the Commodore", Greece has
very strict laws about religion.

First of all, the Greek Orthodox (Catholic) Church is the State
Religion. It has constitutionally enshrined primacy over all other
religions in the country.

Secondly, they have strict laws about blasphemy, proselytizing, and
even how an organization that wants to call themselves a religion must
operate. You may recall that $cientology (the "religion") was banned
in Greece many years ago. This KEPHE name was their not-so-subtle way
of reentering the country, but this time NOT as a religion, in order
to avoid the ban and the strict laws regulating religions there.

In an interesting and forceful demonstration of the Greek attitudes on
the cult of $ignitallaway, they simply took the position that KEPHE
was the banned religion but under a new name, still practicing the
"brain-washing" and extortion they are so famous for.

I don't really agree with the concept of a State Religion or the laws
that allow prominent politicians to prosecute others in court simply
for their religious beliefs, but extortion and fraud are illegal most
places, and I am impressed with the Greeks for standing up to the cult
so firmly and over an extended period of time.
