Just a little about Roy on rock legends last Friday (25th Jan) on Midlands TV in the UK. Well, it was a real treat for Roy Wood fans. Particularly for me as my birthday was the following day!! It contained interview clips (in order of appearance) with Chris Tarrant, Sir Tim Rice, Richard Battle, Rick Price, Toyah Wilcox, Pete Waterman and Holly Wood. It contained Move clips Flowers in the Rain, Blackberry Way and Fire Brigade. Plus Wizzard hits See My Baby Jive and I wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday. Roy went through his career. He talked about the days of having to take the gear on the Bus with the Falcons. Then he talked about Mike Sheridan and the Nightriders, and old haunts in Birmingham like the Cedar Club. Sadly no longer there. In fact once again Roy talked about his disappointment of medium sized gig venues in Birmingham. It is either the NEC or the Pub! He went on then to talk about his Move days. He said he used to write stories for Adults while at School, which he kept, and helped him in his early songwriting days. Fire Brigade was written in one night, this was necessary, as he had to be in the studio recording it the following morning! Roy then talked about the Make Up, and some of the silly things he did to his beard. Like coat it in talc, this was not a good idea as it all came out as he sang! Then he went on to shoe whitener! Noddy Holder (who was narrating) then mentioned ELO before moving on to Roys Wizzard days. Pete Waterman called Wizzard "fantastic" and mentioned See My Baby Jive. Chris Tarrant then called I wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday "The Greatest Christmas song ever" Roy talked about keeping it a secret, but so did Slade, who narrowly beat them to No 1! Rick Price said that "if he knew he was making history, he would not have made a such a fool of himself!" Then came a real treat, A NEW ROY WOOD SONG!!! Yes, the TV debut of Spectacular! This was not bad at all, and I think Roy's fans will like this. Nice Salsa with a great hook chorus. This was great stuff!! :-) Roy went to explain that because of the ageist attitude of Radio he would be releasing it under the name of Mega Dance Orquesta and not his own. I am very optimistic about getting Roy back into the chart, so lets give him the support he deserves! It would be called, "Me and You." ;) Any ideas for a track listing? I sure would love to hear Jeff singing "Dear Elaine." And can you imagine Roy's rendition of "Illusions In G Major"? Holy smokes! That makes much more sense (as much as Roy's songs ever make sense, that is!) ********** Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Tonight" Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2002 01:04:23 -0800 From: Kevin A Kunreuther Song Of The Week: January 28, 2002 "Tonight" An interesting bit of pop written and produced at a time when The Move was functioning as a hit machine to prop up the nascent ELO. I first heard it back in '79 when I picked up a brand new shrink wrapped copy of Split Ends just to get The Move version of "Do Ya". I remember really "digging" the sound of the production on "Tonight", sort of a heavy acoustic pop, but I could barely make out the words, aside from the chorus. I really liked the way it was loud and acoustic and pop and heavy rock all at the same time. There's a really fuzzy guitar sound, a bouncing bass line propelling the song along, nice slide lead guitar fills and driving acoustic rhythm and I can't recall any drums on this track at all, now that I think of it... nice harmonies on chorus. About ten years ago I found in Blockbuster (when they still sold music, not just videos) to my utter amazement, a new Move rerelease, Great Move, The Best Of The Move, which was a Capital/EMI repackaging Message From The Country coupled with all the final non-LP singles and sides released. Going straight to singles portion of the CD (after playing Do Ya for about a couple of hours!) I listened to Tonight and found myself getting out the ol' pen and paper, pausing the CD player every few seconds to decipher what the heck the song was about! I could never decide if this was a mindless fun pop song like Chinatown and Down On the Bay or some kinda' serious message song masquerading as a pop song. I even entertained the idea for awhile that Roy may have been slightly inebriated when he penned the lyrics. Now I think they were just written very quickly, all in one go, in an effort to get next Move single ready and satisfy their Harvest/EMI obligations ("They want a single now? But I've got put on another twenty cello parts on this track here!"). Having said all that, I realise we're not dealing with Stairway To Heaven or American Pie here, nothing weird or mystical about the lyrics, just a song warning about, I'm guessing, leading a self centered directionless life until it's too late. I'm just confused about this middle eight bit, "Well, the note you wrote on your overcoat But you don't want to take it too far Oh I think you won't But I know you don't But you always say that you are" Was Roy writing just to get a rhyming middle eight going and just left it as is? And then there's this line, "Never let the riches that my endless needs will give you / Show some concern for all the love that you must live through" Never let the riches that my endless needs will give you ....what? Never let the riches...do what? Was that a, whoops, we forgot to finish that thought, well let's write a better line next and make it rhyme and hope no one's paying attention? Roy had the makings of another great cautionary pop song along the lines of Walk Upon The Water, but then just gives up, it appears, and dashes the rest off and hopes nobody notices. And Jeff had to sing those lines and look real earnest when he sang 'em again on TOTP! The price one had to pay in those days to put together ELO!! Tonight was a Top Ten hit for The Move (thank goodness! I guess nobody WAS paying attention...) after the WAGBTTF single from the Looking On album proved to be a complete bust (Now that was a shame!). If Tonight stiffed, who knows how much patience Harvest/EMI would have had for Roy's and Jeff's Electric Light Orchestra project. Hotwire usually has the better deals, but it's a bit tricky in that you have to reserve the room before you know what the hotel is! You know the rate, the general area of NYC that it is in, and how many stars they give it, but not the exact spot. I used it last Nov to go to NY and it came up with the Waldorf Astoria for $129!! I used Orbitz this time and am staying at a place called the West Park Hotel at 6 Columbus Circle, they seem to have rates around $159 a night. Be prepared for sticker shock with NYC hotel rooms, btw. ********** [Catching up...] Subject: You're in "the army" now! I'll doubtless be corrected if I've got this wrong but it's my understanding that as you say there was an intention to release "You Got Me Running" as a single but it never came to fruition. The often quoted B-side "It's Just My Imagination" is exactly as the title suggests - imaginary! I believe the 'father' of this little ruse is the author, researcher and rock historian Pete Frame, from the small print of the excellent 'Birmingham Beat' page of this 'Rock Family Trees'. The story goes that he was tired of people ripping off his tireless research and passing it off as their own, so he was accustomed to throwing in the occasional fictitious fact just to see if anyone picked it up and ran with it. Some people are just too clever by half! ********** Subject: Trevor remembers George (Evening Telegraph article) Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2001 00:23:15 -0800 From: Lynn Hoskins Coventry Evening Telegraph Coventry (UK) December 3, 2001 [Excerpt] Trevor Burton, a peer of George Harrison and founder member of 60s group The Move who will play at the Nuneaton pub later this month, has also told of his memories of the "quiet" Beatle. Burton was the guitarist behind The Move, who had hits in the 60s with Flowers in the Rain - the first record played on Radio One in 1967 - and Blackberry Way. The guitarist said he was deeply affected by Harrison's death, adding: "It's just so very sad. I remember meeting him in a recording studio once. It was Olympic Studios in Barnes, London, and George was there doing a session with Eric Clapton. "He was a lovely man." I have a question that sprung to mind when I pulled out my December, 1993 Roy Wood & Big Band BBC lunch show (which I got from another member of this list when it was brand new!). Roy debuted two songs, "Kiss Me Tonight, Boadicea" and "House of Love" in his 5 song set and I thought (and still think) both are terrific Roy songs. Other songs that day were See My Baby Jive, Blackberry Way, and I Wish It Could Be Christmas. Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2001 12:16:55 -0800 From: Lynn Hoskins Roy's not mentioned until the next-to-last paragraph. But it was too difficult to edit the article down without losing all the info, so here's the whole thing. Anyone care to take a photo of the mural (the Roy part) and perhaps scan it for www.roywood.co.uk so we can all see it? (Ken, what do you think of that?) ---- Famous faces on new mural Evening Mail Birmingham (UK) October 31, 2001 by Steve Johnson ONE of the Black Country's most famous sons did a double-take when he returned to his roots - and came face to face with himself. Kevin Rowland, voice of smash 80s band Dexy's Midnight Runners, returned to the Black Country to unveil a giant mural at West Bromwich Community Centre in Gayton Road. The 40-foot mural, a montage of famous faces and landmarks in the area, has been produced by adults with learning difficulties, helped by Birmingham artist Sharon Baker. Kevin, now 48, is one of those featured and was 'chuffed to bits' to be invited back to the Black Country to unveil the work of art. Kevin was born and bred in Wolverhampton and is a fervent Wolves fan. He moved to London at the age of 11 before coming to live in Oldbury when he was 20 and hit the heights of the pop world when forming Dexy's in 1978. Kevin became a household name when the band's single Come On Eileen spent four weeks at number one in the charts in 1982. Delighted Kevin said: 'It's very humbling to be featured on the mural among so many other famous faces from the area. 'It was lovely to be invited back to unveil the mural and I think everyone involved has done a marvellous job. 'My only criticism would be that I am a big Wolves fan and there is a lot of West Bromwich Albion stuff on it.' Kevin, now living in Brighton, said Dexy's disbanded in 1986 and his last stage appearance was in 1999 at the Reading Festival. Dexy's third album, Don't Stand Me Down, originally released in 1985, is due to be re-issued in February. Ruth Conover, day centre officer with the Hill Top Resource Centre, based at the Gayton Road building, said 36 adults had helped produce the mural. The mural also features Robert Plant, Roy Wood, Julie Walters, ex-Albion hero Jeff Astle, Betty Boothroyd and Peter Snape and Judas Priest. She said: 'It took months to complete the mural but everyone is delighted and it was lovely of Kevin to agree to come back to his roots to perform the opening ceremony.'
