I was 2 yrs late in getting the Movements set that has two different versions of Wild Tiger Woman. I like this song a lot and have listened to it probably a hundred times. But now that I can read the lyrics I have to ask -- Is it about SEX? Or it it metaphorical or something and I'm just reading too much into it? Also I know that's Carl Wayne singing the main parts but I also hear Roy. Does he sing too? I've read some postings where fans say they think Carl sings "cabaret". Not on this one he doesn't!!! I think I like this song more now that I've read the lyrics. ;-) Later, Matt ********** Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Wild Tiger Woman" Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 23:58:06 -0800 From: Edward Morris Hehe, I like this song. 'Tis a bit naughty! > Was this song considered "controversial" when it was released in 1968? An interesting question... being just a young'un I wasn't around in 1968, but I would guess that if it HAD been controversial, then sales would have been a lot better. > Why wasn't it a commercial success? The word is Tony Blackburn didn't like it for some reason (maybe he found it a bit too "kinky") so supposing he didn't give it any Radio 1 airplay then maybe it was just a case that no-one knew that it existed, therefore, i) not controversial , and ii) no sales. That's my theory anyway... now what's the real reason? Another thought... would the single have been any more successful had "Omnibus" been on the "A"-side? ********** Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Wild Tiger Woman" Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 23:58:25 -0800 From: Kevin A Kunreuther Wild Tiger Woman is a great Move song! Wild lusty and funny, a classic Roy Wood rocker with great guitar and splendid vocal performance from Carl Wayne. Paired with Omnibus, it should have been another Top Five hit (should have been their first entry level US hit, shame A&M!), but sadly became their first commercial flop. I always dreamed about putting out a Move tribute album; performing Wild Tiger Woman, I would have chosen Eddie Van Halen on guitars and David Lee Roth for the vocal, an excellent combination for this song. Some friends I discussed this with preferred KISS for this song, but that's another posting for another time...! Spotlight for Jean, she's more than seventeen Seems keen, in other words, She must have been a former Beauty Queen, Now she's a naughty girl. CHORUS Wild, wild, wild Tiger Woman You move me very fast But can it last another day? Get out of my way Wild, wild Tiger Woman You never break, you never fall They call you the Wild Tiger Woman Tied to the bed, she's waiting to be fed, No pay till Saturday. Can't see an ounce of reason in her head Don't laugh and turn away. CHORUS Need another gale to come and grab her by the tail, As I was hoping that the ground would open up and take me in, Life is so obscene, and the remarks that go unseen Have been diminished to the earth, I'll never find another girl. All in the race, such a friendly face Seems clean and upper class Young indecisive minds are in a maze She moves me very fast CHORUS That's exactly as it was printed back then! And in answer to which bit Roy sings - it's the "Need another gale"...verse I remember queuing up to be the first to buy this one, probably needn't have bothered, cos as I remember, it hardly sold any - perhaps people didnt like the sexual connotations in the words? Lynnette (a mine of useless information....now, where've I put the words to that one....?!) ********** Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Wild Tiger Woman" Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 09:37:42 -0800 From: "Doyle, Joe" One of my least favourite Move tracks this. I wouldn't say that I strongly dislike it, nor could I say exactly what's wrong with it - it just doesn't "do it" for me at all. Sorry Roy. ********** Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Wild Tiger Woman" Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 09:37:48 -0800 From: John DeSilva Movers: I've always liked this one very much, and have always felt that it didn't deserve the low chart placement (although I tend to agree with the opinion that 'Omnibus' would have been the better choice for the "A" side). Interestingly kinky lyrics from our Roy - but the standout element of this song for me is the excellent guitar work throughout from Woody. He even throws in some Elmore James for good measure near the end. Undoubtedly a major influence in Rick Nielsen's playing (among many others). As far as the final mix of the song (which Bev claims was less than stellar due to the imminent departure of producer Denny Cordell), a much better sounding version can be found on the BBC recording of WTW. I highly recommend it. ********** Subject: Wild Tiger Woman ad - Couldn't even displace "Little Arrows"! Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 12:10:34 -0800 From: Greg Weatherby A great record, no doubt. First, I don't think that it charted because it was a little too "rock" sounding, if this makes sense. And the ad the label ran for this record in the weeklies was terrible (I could post it if anyone is interested). Omnibus would have been a better choice. This record was released on Aug 30, 68. Lets take a look at the artists that had the top 15 charting singles in the month of Sept., in order of popularity Bee Gees Beach Boys Aretha Franklin Johnny Nash Beatles Mary Hopkin Herb Alpert Amen Corner (no, not "Hello Susie"!) Tom Jones Casuals Canned Heat Gary Puckett Mama Cass Leapy Lee Tommy James Did "WTW" fit into this line-up? Bizarre image that really sort of helps to explain why this interesting but below par Move song failed. I like the bridge best. And Nicky Hopkins' piano playing helps to propel the arrangement somewhat. But overall not one of their best efforts. And I'm with the camp that says "Omnibus", one of their minor classics, would have made a great "A" side. What kind of drugs were those promotional people at Regal Zonophone on? Were they so clueless they thought this ad would help promote the record? Did Roy and his management actually have final approval for this? The art for this ad does look like it was done by the same fellow who did the cover for King Crimson's first LP. Kevin Kunreuther Dallas TX ********** Subject: Re: Wild Tiger Woman ad / Album cover artwork Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 23:14:22 -0800 From: Greg Weatherby Pretty hideous, eh? Why that was supposed to attract anyone to buy the record is beyond me...in general, mind you, the ad budgets that were tapped into for the Melody Maker, NME, Record Mirror, Disc and Music Echo was pretty minimal for most all artists, if they got ads at all. I doubt if the group had any say over the ad that was run...and, frankly, (and I know this will be an unpopular opinion) I don't think that Roy's artistic sense for album covers was much better, the cover of Shazam? Terrible, IMO...looks like something from a Sat morning cartoon show...Message From The Country, no better...etc...Roy should have stuck to the music, and left the album covers to someone else. ********** Subject: Re: Album cover artwork Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2002 00:46:16 -0800 From: Kevin A Kunreuther Greg commented; >I doubt if the group had any say over the ad that was run...and, frankly, >(and I know this will be an unpopular opinion) I don't think that Roy's >artistic sense for album covers was much better, the cover of Shazam? >Terrible, IMO...looks like something from a Sat morning cartoon >show...Message From The Country, no better...etc...Roy should have stuck >to the music, and left the album covers to someone else... I think Greg has brought up an interesting issue here. Are album covers by the Move really, shall we say, not terribly good? What about the art for Wizzard, Wizzo Big Band and The Army and solo releases? I like the simplicity of Boulders cover myself, a self portrait of Woody's head and it was a pretty good gatefold, too, nice sepia colored photos of Woody in the studio with a great B&W photo of Roy playing a cello next to a boulder on rear cover. Shazam's cover art has a certain rough charm I've always liked. Both the American and UK covers for MFTC are very strange, but I think the UK version is sub-par garage band amateurish, while the US version is just odd-looking but professional. The US Split Ends collection on UA will never win any awards, except maybe for liner notes but US A&M release of the 2LP Best Of The Move is just plain awful faux Roy Lichtenstein art of a moving van and its muscled arm driver. What say everyone else? It's been a long time since I have listened to my Out of the Blue album so I'd almost forgotten what a great song this is. Roy & band would have to be back at the Village Underground in time for their evening show. Unless they get over here a few days early to tape an appearance. Usually, this depends if Roy and his management feel if it is necessary or not. They may have plans already for any Late Night/Late Show/VH1/MTV/syndicated show appearances. If no appearances are scheduled, there is probably a good reason (though it would be a shame not to see him on American TV). I would ALMOST have to sadly agree, but because Roy is so unknown for the most part in the USA, that would be an advantage, actually. None of the usual baggage associated with being a classic rock artist, at least in the mind of radio and tv programmers; he's practically a new artist to a whole generation (or two!) of American audiences. If Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan won the hearts and minds (and pocketbooks! : 0 /) of the USA in the seventies and eighties and nineties, Roy Wood and his new Orquesta ought to be able to have a chance in the Oughts. Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 16:25:47 -0800 From: John Collins Hi everyone, Well, as you may all know Bev started a weekly Radio show on the brand new SAGA station in Birmingham in October. If anyone is in the West Midlands you can pick the station up on 105.7 FM. It is a very unusual station in that it caters for the over 50's age group! I would guess that a few subscribers to this list would enjoy it!! lol Bev's show called Bev Bevans Jukebox, goes out between 12.00 and 14.00 on a Saturday. An awkward time as you tend to be doing something at that time, shoping or travelling (to a football match usually) so I very rarely get to hear the whole show from start to finish! Bev is very laid back on the show, with a calm soothing voice, which would get him a job with the Samaritans. The show is all about tracks from the late fifties to the early sixties, so the latest track I have heard is 1965. So you can imagine what type of music is being played. There is Elvis of course, a double helping every week, Roy Orbison is always played, last week the Shirelles and the Four Seasons were thrown in. What other station would play Any One Who had a Heart by Cilla Black! The show goes very quick due to interruptions for adverts and news, but the one thing that has amazed me is Bev's knowledge of this period. He will talk not only facts, but he will tell little stories about artists he plays. He will play rare B sides as well as some of the main stream hits. I think he is there for a while!! ********** Subject: Re: Bev Bevan DJ! Date: Tue, 5 Feb 2002 20:05:34 -0800 From: Jeff Lonto There must be a radio syndication outfit here in the states willing to bring Bev Bevan's Jukebox across the Atlantic. Well, probably not. The rock stations here are too busy playing the same Eagles and Steve Miller songs to put on something like that. I would contend that it wouldn't just be the over-fifty year olds that would appreciate it either. More young people than a lot of us think, who find most current stuff repugnant and who enjoy true rock and roll are thirsting for something like this. And if it's music they haven't heard before, it is "new" in a sense to them. It sounds like Bev is offering musical education for all of us, really. ********** Subject: Re: Bev Bevan DJ!
