Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2002 23:03:42 -0800 From: Lynn Hoskins We need to hear from everyone on this. If you haven't posted before, now's the perfect time to introduce yourself and give Rob your valuable opinions. Please be sure to include your reasons for making a particular track suggestion. Post your ideas to move-list@eskimo.com. Thank you! ---- From Rob Caiger: I'm looking for ideas from list members as to what they'd like to see on two forthcoming Roy Wood CD's, one for his EMI work (including ELO, The Move, Roy as a solo artist, Wizzard) and the other CD for cover material recorded after he left EMI. Rare b-sides, tracks not on CD before, singles, album cuts, unreleased material. Each CD will be around 72 minutes. One thing, the hit (and non-hit) singles will have to be on each. Aside from having two quality compilations that do justice to Roy's recent Ivor Novello award for Outstanding Collection of Songs, this will be the first time an actual release strategy (with cross-label cooperation) is in place, sympathetic to Roy's music. Ultimately, Roy will have the final decision, but it would be good to know what fans would like to see - and why they would want their track choices to be on each compilation. If these CD's go well, the long overdue boxset could become an option. My other aim is to delete (destroy) all previously released rubbish UK compilations. Rob ********** Subject: Re: New Roy Wood compilations - your input is needed! Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 09:09:35 -0800 From: John DeSilva This is a tough one - mainly because of the time constraints. If you take all the EMI singles (A sides only) from the Move, ELO, Wizzard, and Roy solo you're probably close to 72 minutes already. Nevertheless, here's my take on the EMI-era material (I'll send another post with my choices for post-EMI stuff): The Move Singles - Tonight Chinatown California Man Album tracks - these are chosen to represent the chunky (all rock, no roll), late period Move sound at its finest. Ella James Until Your Moma's Gone It Wasn't My Idea To Dance ELO Album tracks - these are my favorites from Roy on the album. Look At Me Now First Movement (Jumping Biz) Whisper In The Night Roy Wood Singles - When Gran'ma Plays The Banjo Dear Elaine Wake Up Going Down The Road Forever Album tracks and B sides - the instrumental B sides are important to include as they were such a departure from the A sides, and as such demonstrate Roy's (and Wizzard's) complete mastery of many styles and genres of popular music. Rock Down Low Songs Of Praise The Premium Bond Theme Bengal Jig Wizzard Singles - Ball Park Incident See My Baby Jive Angel Fingers I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday Rock And Roll Winter This Is The Story Of My Love Are You Ready To Rock Rattlesnake Roll Album tracks and B sides - a compromise in that I would have loved to include Meet Me At The Jailhouse, but in the interest of time that wouldn't be possible. Again the best of the B side instrumentals as well as one of the best album tracks from both albums. Buffalo Station - Get On Down To Memphis The Carlsberg Special Marathon Man Eddy's Rock Everyday I Wonder Rarities - Any live/BBC material from ELO or Wizzard Unreleased songs (I would avoid remixes or alternate takes of existing released songs). This list most probably goes over 72 minutes, but I don't know what to cut (Rob, let's just go to the box set straight away!! ;-D ). Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 09:09:17 -0800 From: "Doyle, Joe" From Rob, via Lynn: >Rare b-sides, tracks not on CD before, singles, album cuts, unreleased >material. Each CD will be around 72 minutes. One thing, the hit (and >non-hit) singles will have to be on each. I'd have thought that the singles will swallow up the 72 minutes on both CD's... anyway, what great news and many thanks to Rob for asking for our input. This will take a bit of thought, but on top of the mandatory singles, my initial thoughts for some of the rarer stuff that I would like to see included (I'm not sure if some of them even exist) is: If This Love Is Magic Kiss Me Goodnight Boadicea (studio version, if available) Me and You If you Can't Get What You Want Main Street - it might be a good idea to include a cut or two from this gem - might get it some more sales. Any of Fire In His Guitar, French Perfume, I Should Have Known, or Take My Hand (if there is a version carrying a Roy vocal) - maybe even Human Cannonball, although I've never heard it. Some live cuts: Move - doing Down On The Bay (does this count?) or Brontosaurus Wizzard - anything from Brew or Eddy live, but especially "She'll Be Gone", including the Tchaikovsky flute interlude. Helicopters doing 10538 Overture. Wizzo: pick any from French Perfume, California Man or Waiting At This Door from the BBC In Concert series, or any alternative live concert with quality recording. ********** Subject: Re: New Roy Wood compilations - your input is needed! Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 09:09:03 -0800 From: cathy uselton Mine isn't so much a suggestion as it is a question. With regards to "Starting Up" - the quality of mine isn't the greatest (sometimes sounds a bit murky, for lack of a better word), but I'm thankful to have a copy of it. Is there any chance that some kind of work could be done with any of these tracks? I've seen Rob mention that he didn't like the sound quality of the releases of "Starting Up" (hope I'm not misquoting). I was wondering if the original masters were available for a remix of some of those tracks? thanks! cu tornado alley, ok P.S. I'd love to see "Goin' Down The Road" on a compilation. It's one of my all-time favorites by him - love the sound effects throughout! + it's got great lyrics. ("Thank you!!!") ********** Subject: Re: New Roy Wood compilations - your input is needed! Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 21:36:09 -0800 From: Toshiki Komeda This is very interesting idea to celebrate Roy to win the award. Here is my idea. First of all, we already have Exotic Mixture, which is a good compilation itself. I know that Roy has written so many good B-sides, although I should not be happy if I find almost the same songs on both compilations. Roy wrote many gems in his EMI era, but thinking of the short duration we can include most of the b-sides of course written by Roy on EMI disc. About post EMI era, there are lots of singles, which means lot of b-sides. Roy's materials are nice in those days, however I have to say there are less hit songs comparing to his EMI days. Putting all single tracks shall become a CD with a few collectables. How about put only strong songs on the post EMI disc? Other non-hit singles as well as their b-sides can be found on Exotic Mixture. I would like to have some single tracks and b-sides not on Exotic Mixture (nor on any bootleg CDs) for this compilation. Amongst all, I am eager to see Keep Your Hands On The Wheel, Sing Out The Old (in former version), OTT, Olympic Flyer, Mystery Song, and Watch This Space as well as some extended mix like I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, Under Fire, Sing Out The Old, and so on. Aside those rare single tracks, some album tracks might be good, although I will pick unreleased songs over album tracks when the release plan of Super Active Wizzo or On The Road Again still survives. I shall be happy to find Aerial Pictures, Electric Age, If This Love Is Magic, or such unreleased masterpieces. Some recent live songs are also good. In summary, 6-8 common singles, 6 uncommon singles/versions, and 4-6 unreleased or live songs. Back to EMI era, there are about 10 singles, most of which scored hit. Many b-sides from The Move and Wizzard were not by Roy, so that they should be excluded. We have Roy's solo b-sides on Exotic Mixture, but they can be found on this release. Putting all singles and b-sides by Roy, we shall have some spaces to put some extra. I would like to add several album tracks like Until Your Moma's Gone, Whisper In The Night, Buffalo Station and such. Possible unreleased songs or versions must be exciting, although I don't want to find two same songs on both this compilation and forthcoming First Light series. In summary, 12-14 single tracks and b-sides, 2-3 album tracks, and 2-3 unreleased or live songs. Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 10:43:20 -0800 From: John DeSilva Post-EMI output - another toughie, as there are a couple of different ways you could go with this one. After a bit of thought, I've come to the conclusion that a "Singles A's and B's" format is best, as Roy's output in the late 70's to late 80's has consisted largely of singles. Here's what album tracks I'd include (this is going to go over 72 minutes again ...): Mustard - The Rain Came Down On Everything The Song Roy Wood & Wizzard - Main Street The Fire In His Guitar French Perfume Wizzo Band - Something off of Super Active Wizzo, but I can't decide which track! On The Road Again - Jimmy Lad Starting Up - Red Cars Are After Me These tracks plus all single A and B sides (including OTT of course) would be a completists dream. Thanks for asking by the way!!! JD San Jose, CA ********** Subject: Roy's Definitive Greatest Hits - Yippee! Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 12:08:35 -0800 From: Bernardo Quiroga Dear fellow listees; Lynn, Rob and Roy: Bernie from Chile here. Chile? Ah, one of the places where Roy Wood is absolutely unknown. Well, maybe. Move? Roy Wood? Aw, yes, the guy from the Rolling Stones. Bah!! All I have come across up to this date here in my little country are compilations by Roy Wood ("The Best Of Roy Wood & Wizzard", Disky, The Netherlands, and "Exotic Mixture", Repertoire, Germany), apart from my much beloved Move compilations "Movements" and "Great Move". At least, several kind souls on this wonderful list have sent me some tracks from Roy on mp3, and another friend burnt for me 3CD-R's sourced from his 7" and 12" vinyl collection of Roy solo and with Wizzard. I'm very thankful for that. Well, I'm happy that Rob, Lynn (and Roy!) are aware of the fans' thoughts when thinking of a definitive greatest hits collection. I mean, that's the one that everybody's gonna have at their home!! Roy deserved something like this for a long time!! Following is a number of "thoughts" about a compilation for such a big name as Roy Wood (it's a pity to think that, here in Chile, I suspect there are no more than 10 Roy Wood fans all over the country). I thought "What would I like on a Roy Wood definitive hits compilation?". Who am I to say what should be said or done for a Roy Wood compilation? Just a fan...but I'm glad to be asked for my opinion. First, I'd like not to have Jeff Lynne/Carl Wayne/Annie Haslam sung tracks on this 2CD compilation. I mean, tracks where Roy's vocal input is minimal should be left off. There are some compilations that have "Night Of Fear" and "Flowers In The Rain" (2 songs I truly love, btw). But I'd hate to have a Lennon compilation with "Do You Want To Know A Secret" and/or "I've Got A Feeling" on it. I think you get the idea. Second, I think that those tracks I mentioned above might be essential on a definitive hits compilation, so, maybe if Roy re-cut some of them with his Army-Salsa band, that would be truly great. Is there any chance to get "10538 Overture" as performed by Roy Wood's Helicopters Third, please, don't use silly titles as "Definitive", "Ultimate", and/or "Essential" for these compilations. IMHO, a much sober "The Best of" with its respective "Vol. X" tag would be much better. I think that a year-span title (my favorite for compilations) might not be possible, since Roy has recorded for many labels. For instance, Roy recorded with EMI in early 1970's and early 1980's, and with many other labels in between and after that. But, if it was possible to make a "Roy Wood 1968/1974" and "Roy Wood 1974/2002", that would be very much appreciated, too. "The Singles Collection and More"...gee, that was a cool name for a Move compilation, and it would be equally as cool for a Roy Wood comp. Fourth, please, emphasize the "rarities" contents on b-sides and rare tracks not on CD yet, and/or hard to find. Remaster quality would be pretty much appreciated. Well, here are my proposed tracks for either compilation (in no particular order) The "obvious" ones: 1. California Man 2. I Wish It Could Be Xmas Everyday 3. Tonight 4. Ball Park Incident 5. See My Baby Jive 6. Rock & Roll Winter 7. Going Down The Road 8. Angel Fingers 9. Indiana Rainbow 10. Forever 11. Dear Elaine Slightly alternate versions of any of these would be cool!! The "rare" or "not so obvious" ones: 1. The Carlsberg Special 2. OTT (a must in my opinion) 3. 10538 Overture ("Helicopters" version) 4. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) 5. When Alice Comes Back To The Farm 6. Down To Zero 7. You Can Dance Your Rock And Roll 8. The Fire On His Guitar 9. Brand New '88 10. Kiss Me Goodnight, Boadicea 11. Great post, with great enthusiasm! The thing about having rarities on the compo would be....are there really any rarities of Roy / Move stuff? Unreleased material, I hope so....but a rarity? Since I have never heard this song, I don't know how well it would fit as representative to a Wizzard B Side Instrumental, but I am sure it's yet another great instrumental from Wizzard. Secondly, I hope the CD will be enhanced with some video as from I hear this was a very visual band as well. ********** Subject: Re: New Roy Wood compilations - your input is needed! Now, the "Exotic Mixture" featured songs from various record labels. Naturally they would all need to consent. How is "cross-label cooperation" a different procedure? Does the phrase "release strategy" mean that various labels agree to release things in a certain timeframe? ********** Subject: Re: New Roy Wood compilations - your input is needed! Two labels only, with packaging, recovery of tapes, contact wrangles, design, etc, under my control, with ultimate say / veto given to Roy, plus his participation. The release schedule and cross-label marketing will ensure maximum exposure for Roy's music, together with a USA domestic release. It's difficult to keep all the angles covered, but encouraging when the record companies involved give their support. Repertoire, will doing great work, missed some golden opportunities to really work Roy's catalogue. My intention is to do what we did with First Light but carry it across to more labels. If you want to spend a lot of money and get other cool songs besides "Maypole", check out Rhino's Nuggets II compilation. It chronicles the garage band/punk (as it was called then) movement of the 60's, but from the international perspective (Nuggets is the definitive box set on the American garage band scene in the 60's).
