Discovered recently, the blockage has prevented Carl from eating properly and doctors have advised operating without delay: "A month after returning from our recent American tour, I experienced difficulty swallowing. I had various tests and it was discovered that I had an oesophageal blockage, which doctors have stressed needs operating on immediately. Sadly, this has meant I will be unavailable for the forthcoming tour and all my other commitments while I recover. This is a huge disappointment but I have been told I need to make a full recovery before I can resume my career and return for the rescheduled tour in the New Year. I look forward to seeing you all on tour during 2003." Carl has postponed all commitments until 2003 and further information and any updates will posted to Carl's official website www.carlwayne.co.uk (contact Helen Macdonald at email info@carlwayne.co.uk) and to the official mailing list for The Move, "Useless Information." Rescheduled concert dates will also be posted to The Hollies official website at www.hollies.co.uk. Carl's next appearance on record will be as a special guest on EMI's forthcoming remastered edition of Electric Light Orchestra's "ELO 2" album. Three songs, recorded by ELO with Carl on lead vocals during 1973, were recently discovered in EMI's archives and will be released on 3 March 2003. ********** Subject: Re: Press Release: Carl Wayne Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2002 13:35:33 -0700 From: John DeSilva > THE HOLLIES POSTPONE AUTUMN TOUR WHILE > LEAD SINGER CARL WAYNE UNDERGOES OPERATION While this is disturbing news, I'm confident that Carl is in good hands, and that his doctors will perform a successful operation to fix this problem. Charlie, we'll all be praying for your speedy recovery, and we'll all be here anxiously awaiting your full recovery and return to the concert, TV, radio, and theatre stages very soon! The BYRDS were VERY influential to British bands of the late sixties and made many treks across the pond - so it's very possible that McGuinn, Crosby and Co. could have come into contact with The Move. Derek Taylor, publicist for the Beatles and one of the main operators of Apple Corps in the sixties, was also The Byrds manager for awhile. In Taylor's book, he talks as much about The Byrds as he does The Beatles. There is a really interesting photograph in The Beatle Recording Sessions book showing David Crosby singing with Paul & John on a track for the Sgt. Peppers album. George wrote Roger McGuinn a letter saying his song "I Need You" from Help, was directly influenced by The Byrds' "Bells Of Rhymney." ********** Subject: Re: Piece Of My Heart Date: Wed, 9 Oct 2002 17:54:40 -0700 From: Rob Caiger >The BYRDS were VERY influential to British bands of the late sixties >and made many treks across the pond - so it's very possible that McGuinn, >Crosby and Co. could have come into contact with The Move. They did. Both The Move and The Byrds supported Jimi Hendrix at the Royal Albert Hall and all ended up on stage together. I'll try and dig out a song list but The Move certainly performed 8 Miles High with The Byrds at one point. ********** Subject: Re: Piece Of My Heart Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2002 00:33:51 -0700 From: "Tyler C.Sherman" The Move and the Byrds doing "8 Miles High" together! I seem to enjoy it more as time goes by. Lynn: I finally got around to reading your Sept. 3rd posting yesterday (yes, i'm a little behind, so much to do, etc.), your transcript of the interview with RW from 20th Century Guitar, April 2002. Roy talks about "Main Street" and the Trower/Hendrix/Reinhardt connection, which made me want to re-acquaint myself with the album. So i did: three times since yesterday. Initially, when i first bought it, i was a bit disappointed, but each listening reveals hidden delights: the "Trowerisms" at the beginning of "The fire in his guitar," for instance, which i'd completely missed before. (In the interview, Roy indicates that it was in fact intended as a tribute to Hendrix rather than Trower, but to my mind it invokes Robin rather than Jimi.) Definitely a worthy addition to the canon, if a bit of a "grower." ********** Subject: Re: The Lost Album Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2002 00:36:22 -0700 From: kakman1 I've been listening to the title track (Main Street) incessantly the past couple of days. Love this song. Reminds me of Carl Wilson singing another one of his brother's Brian classics from 1970-71 era. Great arrangements, marvellous instrumentation, it's one of Roy's ten best recordings ever. It was so criminal that Don and David just sat on this album ("It's all very nice Roy, but it's not what the kids are buying right now, can't you see?" "Well, I don't want to write teen pop songs anymore, Don, I wanna move on, you know?" "Tell ya what, we'll release one of the songs as a single, sort of a trial balloon and see what happens ... I'm not set up for taping, but my friend is. I don't how many copies he is willing to make though. I actually was under the impression that this tape is fairly common and I had a bad copy! Doesn't anyone on this list have a Move compilation video of high quality? >Have heard the legends of just how charismatic Ace and Carl were, as >well looking extremely cool in their '66 post-mod/gangster chic look! Exactly! There is two songs that I believe are from Beat Beat Beat: Night Of Fear and Walk Upon The Water, both of which are live and Ace steals the show! I think there is a couple more with Ace, but I think they are mimed. There is the Colour Me Pop on the tape and some other TV appearances that are mimed. The other highlight is a couple live in the U.S. from '69! My Question: Is there any more of the The Mark 1 line up live on video? >Imagine a full DVD of the boys coming out, all singing and dancing >including British and European appearances and lingering promo films >that may (or may not? Guys?) exist....wouldn't be bad, would it? Initially I had a problem with The BBC Sessions release (didn't like the sound) but realised I had some problems with my music system. After the fixes, the CD came to life for me, especially tracks like "Going Back", "Wild Tiger Woman" and "You'd Better Believe Me". "Going Back" sounds like it may have been one of the songs that was in contention for the "Shazam" album. "Shazam" may have even been a better album had they released it as a double-LP with one lp showcasing the band's live performances (perhaps a repackage of the "Something Else" performances coupled with selected bits from their US Tour?). Was there a lot of songs that were recorded for "Shazam" but left off? LD ********** Subject: Where Are They Now? - Bev Bevan Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2002 14:46:08 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins I finally managed to locate the "Where Are They Now?" piece on Bev that I posted to the Move List two years ago. I recalled it saying a lot more about Bev's Move days...ah well. Of course Bev ended up hosting a radio show instead of putting a band together. But it was a great idea... ---- WHERE ARE THEY NOW? ELO Drummer Bev Bevan Birmingham Evening Mail October 14, 2000 For 30 years drummer Bev Bevan has been performing the songs of top band Electric Light Orchestra - but now he has had enough. 'I was just banging out the hits like a human jukebox, and I was getting bored,' says the 54-year-old Brummie. 'That's why I left ELO 2.' Not that Bev is putting his feet up. He's teamed up with his old pals, funnyman Jasper Carrott and Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi, to resurrect one of their former groups, Belch. 'I saw Robert Plant performing with his Priory of Brion band and he just seemed to be enjoying going out doing his own thing. With Belch we play what we want to - and there's no ELO material. 'We've done a few corporate events and have got a good reaction. Maybe we'll do more.' Bev is also setting up his own Bev Bevan Band and is on the look out for top musicians for a gig at Ronnie Scott's next year. "I'm particularly keen to recruit a lead guitarist who can sing a bit,' he confides. Bev, along with Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne, first made his name with The Move who had a string of hit singles, including Blackberry Way, Flowers In The Rain and Fire Brigade. 'They were really good times, it was so exciting to get hit records and be on TV,' he recalls. 'None of us made any money but we had a lot of fun.' In 1970 the trio formed the Electric Light Orchestra, initially as an off-shoot of The Move. 'The first few gigs were an absolute nightmare, cellos feeding back and headphones getting caught round necks. Roy was the only one who could play cello so he would be in the studio for hours overdubbing to make it sound like an orchestra. 'By the time we got to the fourth album, Eldorado, we were using an orchestra and it was a lot easier.' Face The Music in 1975 was the band's breakthrough album and was followed by a series of multi-million selling records, Out of the Blue, A New World Record and Discovery to name three. Between 1976 and 1981 there was an unbroken run of 15 UK top 20 singles but then the hits began to dry up. 'For about three years we almost stopped altogether,' Bev reveals. 'We did a few shows in 1986, finishing at Wembley Stadium on the same bill as Rod Stewart.' The split was partly due to Lynne's move into production and his work with the Travelling Wilburys - George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. Bev did a stint with Black Sabbath but then decided to re-form Electric Light Orchestra as ELO 2. He explains: 'We had hundreds of letters asking when we were getting back together. I spoke to some of the other guys and they were ready to get back but Jeff made it clear he wasn't interested.' ELO 2 toured extensively and released several albums, although the chart success of ELO was never repeated. With the 30th anniversary of the group being celebrated with commemorative releases the rumours are that the original line-up will get together again. 'That's very unlikely,' admits Bev. 'I haven't actually spoken to Jeff for ten years. All our talking is done through lawyers.' © Copyright 2000 Mirror Regional Newspapers End of Useless Information #400 ******************************* [This digest is the copyright of the Move "Useless Information" Mailing List.
