Fields. As a teen I would always be combing through all their 45rpms and L.P.s. Sometimes I would buy an L.P. just because the artwork was weird or eyecatching. When J.M.Fields when out of business, they had a fire sale not unlike many of the K-Marts had earlier this year in Dallas (I'm not even sure we have any K-Marts open in Dallas anymore). Having been introduced to Roy Wood via No Answer and the live Wizzo program I saw on the Beeb, It was intriguing to find dozens of copies of Boulders and Best Of Move available for $1.99! I bought 'em and played Boulders first. Wow! Was Roy a Christian rocker? I loved the song very much and Boulders as a whole (especially "locomotive' from the medley at the end of side two). A real nice gospel pop tune (was this an answer to Jubilee Cloud or was Jubilee Cloud an answer to Songs Of Praise, hmmm?) that shows off Woody's talent as a songwriter, arranger, performer and producer. At that time, I felt this one upped "McCartney", which had it's own charms to be sure, but Songs Of Praise and all of Boulders really shown what one could do as a one man band in the studio. Tyler you guessed right, it was 'Dear Elaine's' b side in the UK and most of Europe. It must have taken a long time to lay down the vocals, sounds just like a rave up at church. Roy got his vocals to a fine art. The studio time and cost must have worried the Bank Manager (No pc's to record your album in them days). I only hope he makes another album soon it's been far to long. Looking forward to 'First Light Boulders' release next year to hear how some of the songs evolved. ********** Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Songs Of Praise" Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 13:32:39 -0700 From: David Gofstein I LOVE this song. It's always been one of my favorites by Roy Wood. I (like a lot of folks, I'm sure) picked up Boulders from a bargain bin for $1.99 (I miss those days!). I was a fan by way of the Split Ends album. Anyway I always took "Songs of Praise" as an exercise in trying to recreate a gospel record as opposed to a heartfelt song. In fact to my ears there has always been a bit of a humorous tone to the lyrics. Not exactly a goof on the genre so much as a fond giggle. But in the guise of having some fun it sure is a rockin' little piece of work. That massed chorus of a thousand Roys really sing their guts out!! It always makes me smile. ********** Subject: Sheet Music & Sound Files Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 15:56:10 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins Boy, there's an intriguing subject line... First, a request. Something that we're working on for The Move Online is a lyrics section. The lyrics we've got. What we don't have is the sheet music. If any of you have Move sheet music, would you please drop me a line? We're looking for good scanned copies of the sheet music to accompany the words. If you don't have the ability to scan, let's work something out. And I wanted to let you know that either this Monday or the following, the Song Of The Week will be something you've never heard before. A rarity, if you will. (Ooh!) I believe that most everyone can access MP3's, so the SOTW will be in the form of a clip you can download. (Wanted to give you a head's up so you can make sure you've got an MP3 player installed on your computer - there's all kinds of free player software available for both the PC and Mac, so let me know if you need help in this area.) ********** Subject: Re: Sheet Music Date: Thu, 17 Oct 2002 01:13:41 -0700 From: "Greg Weatherby" Lynn Hoskins wrote: >First, a request. You're forgiven, Greg. You must still be recovering from typing all those great NME articles a while back. :) One of my favorites was from April 29, 1967: "The Move are offering 200 pound reward for information leading to the recovery of tapes stolen this week from their agent's car in London's Tin Pan Alley. They are the master tapes of ten numbers which the group has spent seven months recording, for an LP due to be issued this June." Rob confirmed this to be another brilliant Secunda stunt, but still...you can't help but wonder... ********** Subject: Roy Wood's "On The Road Again" Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 02:10:55 -0700 From: "DAVID BURLEY" Lynn, you said: >For George or anyone else who's having trouble finding >any Move or >Roy >Wood CD's... we love a good challenge. There's nothing that >can't be ?found. Feel free to post your "needs" to the list. The only thing I've been looking for (for years) is the Roy Wood album "On The Road Again". I bought the three UK singles off it when they came out but did not hear about the album until it was deleted (a couple of seconds after it was released!) :-) Can anybody burn me a copy? Regards David Burley P.S. Keep up the good work Lynn and Rob. ********** Subject: "On The Road Again" Contest Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 23:41:06 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins Thanks to the generosity of a list member who has decided to part with one of his treasured Roy Wood LP's (okay, he has two of this one...but still!) we have a prize to give away. This contest is for those who do not already own an "On The Road Again" album. The prize: One "On The Road Again" vinyl LP (U.S. release) in MINT condition. This album was released in 1979 in the USA and Germany only. The UK only got a single (the title track b/w "Saxmaniacs"). I'm told it's becoming more and more difficult to find, considered rare in some parts of the world. To enter, all you have to do is answer the questions below. Submit your answers to me at lhoskins@earthlink.net. If there is more than one winner, there will be a drawing to determine who gets the prize. The deadline is one week from today - Wednesday, October 23. Answers will be posted when a winner is announced. Good luck!! Lynn "On The Road Again" Contest questions: Q: The B-side to the single "(We're) On The Road Again" is called "Saxmaniacs" (which is also on the "Main Street" CD). It is the extended outro to which Wizzard single B-side? Q: What well-known member of Renaissance can be heard singing backing vocals on one track? Q: When Roy Wood was in Mike Sheridan's Lot he became infamous for putting on a wig and doing a fabulous impression of which 60's diva? (Hint: She also did some backing vocals on Carl Wayne's solo LP.) Q: Which member of The Move (besides Roy) appears on this album? Q: What did Marie say to the driver? ********** Subject: Re: "On The Road Again" Contest Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 12:11:13 -0700 From: Poisongold Ooh! Ooh! I think that the album loses a bit of coherence having two non-Roy vocal tracks slap bang in the middle. Dick Plant really does justice to Take My Hand, but the song literally cries out for Roy on vocals. I see this one as the latest in a chain of songs, such as Whisper in the Night, Dear Elaine and She'll Be Gone. Nobody does these like Roy. As for the Charlie Grima track, again Charlie does a credible job on the song, but it just doesn't fit on the album for me - probably the weakest on there. It would have been a much better fit on Mustard if you ask me (maybe he could have swapped it around with Sure Got It Now). Having said that, this is probably my most played Roy album over the last year or two, because the undeniable (to me anyway) strength and brilliance of cuts like French Perfume (was there ever a sweeter guitar solo?), Fire In His Guitar, Saxmaniacs, Main Street and the absolutely brilliant I Should Have Known (why wasn't this the single in '76? A sure fire hit if you ask me). Wizzard should never have split up. It was an absolute tragedy: so much talent, so little output - I still grieve over it.... ********** Subject: Idle Race on CD Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 12:18:19 -0700 From: "Andrew Footman" I have the albums, will they be released on CD in the future. I know i missed a release i think it was called 'Back to the story' (I don't think it came out in the uk). I think that contained the 'Time Is' album too. Is there anywhere i can get a copy of this cd or is Rob working on a future release. ********** Subject: Get your teeth into this Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 12:11:41 -0700 From: "Rowland Jones" I have a copy of this Mongrel LP and I have to say it is brilliant - along with Sundance's Chuffer - great Brum rock. All the tracks on the Mongrel Album are by Bob Brady and the band line up is; Keyboards and vocals - Bob Brady Guitars - Stuart Scott Bass - Rick Price Drums - Keith Smart Percussion - Charlie Grima 2nd Bass - Megan Davies (wot from the Applejacks?) 2nd Drums - Tom Farnell 2nd Guitar - Roger Hill Side A kicks off with 3 tracks joined together, Lost/What a day/Lonely street there is some great piano riffs and runs in this medley and lonely street finishes up with a great shoo wop wop backing. track 2 is Last Night which is more rocky and features yet more keyboard virtuosity and a blistering guitar solo. track 3 Sing a little song is a more straightforward ballad and the final track on side one is the brilliant Nobody loves you like me which has a brilliant tempo break at the end and a fine vocal chorus. Side 2 in my opinion is not as strong as side 1, the tracks are ; 1) Get your teeth into this 2) Write me a letter 3) The Road 4) Twist her hand 5) Melting away. If you know the Wizzard "B" side "I can't help my feelings" you know what a strong song writer Bob Brady is and what a good voice he has. I've played this album a great number of times and really enjoyed it - if only I could work out how to make mp3 files from vinyl !!!! Now you know why I'm a dubbing mixer not an album reviewer! cheers all ********** Subject: Bob Brady, Wizzard and Salsa Date: Thu, 17 Oct 2002 01:13:35 -0700 From: kakman1 One, cool info on Bob Brady and the Mongrel album. I especially like "Rattlesnake Roll"/"I Can't Help My Feelings" single, not only because of its B-side but on the A-side Roy traded lead vocal duties with Bob. A great swing tune with a few "snarls" to boot. Two, one of the things that I enjoy about Wizzard was that it was NOT all about Woody, although a great amount of the focus was centered on him, to be sure. Other members of the band were given the limelight on the flip side of all the Wizzard singles; the circus atmosphere of the live shows demonstrated everyone in the band had a great time playing the music and all egos were pretty much in check, lest a certain well aimed custard pie came your way (sadly never have seen any Wizzard concerts, just read and listened to many other peoples' accounts of the show, re-enacting the long gone events in my head, enjoying it vicariously) (I have seen the TOTP videos of "Ball Park", "See My Baby" and "IWICBCE"). Three, what ever happened to Woody's new Orquestra project, what with the salsa dance music and all? Is that on the backburner 'til after Christmas? Or should we expect a surprise for our stockings this upcoming holidays? (Is that the new rare song Lynn? kidding....) Roy talked about what it was like meeting Bryan for the first time, and what he was like (very nice, apparently!) Quoting the interview... Hollies tour blow hits Brum date Evening Mail Birmingham (UK) October 11, 2002 The Hollies today postponed their 40th anniversary UK tour after their Birmingham-born lead singer Carl Wayne was told by doctors he needed an urgent operation. The 58-year-old vocalist from Shard End is to have removed a blockage in his oesophagus that had prevents him from eating properly. The band were due to perform at Birmingham's Symphony Hall on November 1. All ticketholders will be contacted when the concert is rescheduled. Carl, who sang with the hit band the Move in the sixties and joined the Hollies two years ago, said: 'A month after returning from our recent American tour, I experienced difficulty swallowing. 'I had various tests and it was discovered that I had an oesophageal blockage, which doctors have stressed needs operating on immediately. 'Sadly, this has meant I will be unavailable for the forthcoming tour and all my other commitments while I recover. This is a great theme and now I'm thinking yes, I can go with that - 'Brontosaurus', because it meant so much to me during that period and at a time when Carl had just left and all sorts of split rumours were flying around - just like I tried to be objective and nominate 'Omnibus' even though my house is called 'Blackberry Way' but I play 'Fire Brigade' more than any other song - except 'Looking On' because that is my favourite next to 'When Alice comes back to the Farm'. Isn't this fun and infuriating at the same time? We need to have two choices - because there are two Moves - but that's against the rules - so I'm going to register in 'Alice's Funny Farm' or 'Cherry Blossom Clinic' for a while. My dog is called Roy by the way - he's a black Labrador - so I should get in easily - probably won't have to pay!
