The thought of the electric shock treatment he received was frightening to say the least. I think Ace and Carl should be applauded for this brilliant interview and hopefully may well have done some good to teach our kids of today that drugs do mess your life up. But I am so pleased that Ace is now back on track and starting to build a relationship back up with his father. Lets hope the rest of his life is good to make up for his harrowing past. ********** Subject: Re: Ace Kefford's interview Date: Fri, 8 Nov 2002 12:03:33 -0800 From: "Andrew Footman" Yes it nice to see Ace is fine now .I hope one day he will get himself back on the road with a band maybe the Ace Kefford Stand Mark 2. ********** Subject: It's The Roy Wood Christmas Tree! All other leaves, please contact the branch assigned to you. Some who volunteered as branches were given leaf positions because we had so many branch volunteers--thanks for that! Remember- no one should profit financially in their exchanges for this CD! Lynn and I have discussed artwork for this CD and will offer it when available. Date: Mon, 4 Nov 2002 19:08:19 -0800 From: Harold Montgomery >Tell us about an amusing or interesting situation that has happened as >a result of you being a Move/Roy Wood fan. I have met some great folk from this list but most notable is Mr. Tyler Sherman. He turned me on to Lynn's FAB list and has lead me to some of the most valuable resources for Woody magic! I am indebted to him, Lynn and some others on this list. I am a huge Woody fan but foremost an original MOVE fan. Harold Hopland, California ********** Subject: The Shazam Date: Thu, 14 Nov 2002 18:28:54 -0800 From: Lynn Hoskins A lot of Move fans are familiar with a band called The Shazam. Not just because they're named after the second Move album, but because they are part of the Move family, through music and friendship. Hans Rotenberry, the "Roy Wood" of the band, is a huge fan of Jeff Lynne, Roy, The Move, ELO, The Idle Race. The whole band are big fans of Birmingham Beat music. It was the summer of '97 when The Shazam opened for Cheap Trick at 328 Performance Hall in Nashville, Tennessee. The Shazam had just come out with their self-titled debut, and to say that Cheap Trick liked what they saw would be putting it mildly. They've stayed in touch ever since, hopeful they'll be able to play together again at some point. In 1999 came "Godspeed The Shazam," released in both the U.S. and the UK. Said Mojo: "An utterly glorious knot of The who, The Move and The Beatles circa '67, all created in Tennessee." However, it wasn't just the UK press who were paying attention to The Shazam. The band's UK label brought them to London for some club dates - audiences were treated to heart stopping sets, and encores featuring songs such as "I Can Hear The Grass Grow," "Hello Susie," "Twilight," "Rock Down Low" and "Impostors Of Life's Magazine." A certain Carl Wayne caught one of their shows, met the band, and they had a chat. In May 2002 The Shazam came back to London. This time it was to perform with Carl and Bev Bevan at Abbey Road Studios as part of a big 15-hour BBC London Live celebration. Following three Shazam originals, Carl and Bev joined The Shazam for an acoustic "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" in the garden at Abbey Road. Amazing! But the icing on the cake was when The Shazam were given the prime 8pm slot to do a version of "Beautiful Daughter" with Carl and Bev. Paul Weller, a big fan of The Move who was to go on next, exclaimed, ""F**kin' 'ell Charlie, you can still sing 'em!!!" Roy had something to say about The Shazam, too: "Hans plays and looks just like I used to in The Move!" [Oops... I think this is my cue to let you know about a new sound clip that's on The Move Online website - http://www.themoveonline.com . It's a 1-minute downloadable MP3 of Carl, Bev, and The Shazam performing "Beautiful Daughter" at Abbey Road Studios.] Apparently Carl didn't want The Shazam to go home, because when they played The Garage a couple days later, Carl rushed to the stage to join in a hard rockin' version of I Can Hear The Grass Grow. The song was dedicated to Roy. Allow me to wrap up this post by saying that Carl would consider it a personal favor if members of this list would do what they can to help this band get the exposure they've earned. The new album, "Tomorrow The World," is getting airplay on BBC Radio, but you know the U.S. market is a tough, if not impossible nut to crack. Are there any DJ's on the list who would consider playing the new Shazam album on their show? Contact me off-list. Little Steven debuted a track on his Underground Garage radio show this past weekend calling it "the coolest song in the world" this week. Tomorrow the world? With your help, it's possible. The Shazam are currently on tour in the U.S. Visit http://www.theshazam.com for the tour schedule. As The Tennessean recently wrote, The Shazam "pummel first, ask questions later." Much like...The Move. :) You won't be disappointed. ********** Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Cherry Blossom Clinic (Revisited)" Date: Tue, 5 Nov 2002 12:17:50 -0800 From: "Tyler C.Sherman" Well, what can I say about this outstanding work by Roy? It still blows me away and gives me chills all these years later. Of course, the entire band shines on this track, but Roy really displays his prowess as one of rock's premier guitarists on it. As some others have posted, I often play this for folks who have never heard the Move before and just watch the reaction. Especially other guitar players. No one can hear this and not be amazed. I've often thought that they reworked this tune as a sort of retaliation against their record company as the original version was set for release as a single but withdrawn because they were afraid the lyrics might offend crazy people. Obviously the band felt differently about it so they worked up this absolutely sublime arrangement of the song and, if anything, made it potentially even more offensive to crazy people. "Take THAT!", I can just imagine them saying to the record company. Just a quick story related to the topic. About 12 years ago, a friend of mine was working as a part time DJ at a small progressive FM radio station here in NJ. I had sent the station some Move albums at the behest of their program director who seemed willing to spin a few of their tunes, which he occasionally did. One Sunday afternoon, I was digging around my garden and listening to the station when my friend Brendan came on to do a shift for the regular DJ. So I decided to call him on the request line and asked him to play "Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited", which he had not previously heard. After it played he came on and said , chuckling, "That goes out to Tyler who's working in his garden... and as soon as I'm done with my shift I'm going to go down and dig a hole and throw him into it". He later told me he got a few phone calls from listeners about the song, one of whom said, "Man, I haven't heard that on the radio in 20 years". It still packs a punch .... It's raw, for sure, a diamond in the rough, but how delightful to hear something "new" from the chaps after all these years. I can only echo JD's comment: bring on the Fillmore album, ASAP. Their eBay ad says, "You can only find them here--and they are not copies.. they come from original source material." Are they paying royalties to the band for use of their artwork? I read it the same way and I thought, "Gee, is he cutting up his CD covers to make magnets?" How else would it be source material? Maybe using those little 3" Japanese CDs as his source (???) You don't suppose he's just scanning said "source material" and reducing it, do you? Naaaaaaah! Of course, they're bootleg. But, like everything else that surely would NOT exist otherwise that I really appreciate having, I really don't care. Besides, EMI would just squander that royalty money on some awful music I can't stand - I'm sure the Move guys would see BUPKIS (which means "0" by the way). My Move reefer magnet will sit proudly next to my "Rat Pack" magnet on the ol' Norge (wonder if Altovise is getting Sammy royalties? - Or is the IRS taking it all? Go Feds... GO!) Yes Chris, you are on the right track here except that Superactive Wizzo is an Album not a 45. It was recorded by Roys 'next' band after Wizzard who went briefly under the tag 'Roy Wood's Wizzo Band'. Apart from this lone album, the band made just one public performance which was broadcast 'live' on both TV and radio simultaneously as part of the BBC's Sight & Sound series. > Is that a hot desirable item nowadays then? Well yes again! We are all waiting for a CD release with bated breath and hope that both the studio album and live material will be included. Rob is working hard on this (and many other) fronts. :O) The vinyl album is quite sought after, as (I think) it was fairly quickly withdrawn after release - so there aren't many about. If you've got one treasure it! Regards Chris Cardiff, Wales, U.K. ********** Subject: Re: Superactive Wizzo - desirable item? Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 00:38:16 -0800 From: kakman The single, "The Stroll" b/w "Jubilee (Big Footsteps)" was released as Roy Wood's Wizzo on Warners Bros UK. On the label there was an exhortation to PLAY LOUD! 'cos there was an awful lot of music crammed on such a small platter. Had a neat picture sleeve. Personally, I thought it was not 'single 'material, it was like a re-hash of "Brontosaurus" with jazz flourishes and sound effects. The LP was "Super Active Wizzo", also released on Warner Bros UK. Both were not huge sellers by any stretch of the imagination and are sought out by collectors. Kevin Kunreuther Dallas TX ********** Subject: Re: Superactive Wizzo - desirable item? Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 10:58:36 -0800 From: "Doyle, Joe" Wizzo did release another single (I know because I have it) - Dancing at The Rainbow's end. If my memory serves me the B-side is an edited down version of Waiting At This Door. The track was also released on album on Roy's solo effort, On The Road Again (and by the player credits, as I recall them, it certainly looks to be a Wizzo recording, including David Donovan on drums). I was never really fussed on The Stroll, when it first came out but it has grown on me over the years, especially the raucous instrumental portion at the end, some bloody lovely piano work in there. As the WB press adverts at the time said, "Wizzo is so musical". ********** Subject: Lonnie Donnegan fades @ 71 Date: Wed, 6 Nov 2002 05:25:48 -0800 From: kakman Oh my goodness, skiffle king Lonnie Donnegan, he of "Jack Of Diamonds" fame has died this week at 71 while on tour. I remember discovering the Shazam album in the album archives when I worked at my college radio station. I had heard they had something to do with ELO. So, I played side one on the air, and I remember some friends laughing at the "hippy" music (the station's usual fare at the time was R.E.M., the Clash, the Cure, and other "underground" early '80s new wave-type stuff), and getting a couple irate calls. >Who are some of your other favorite artists/bands?
