I'm Graeme Curtis, from Houston in Scotland and an administrator with a fairly large UK Company. Thanks to my brother who is a wee bit older than me, I got switched on to the Move when they were in their hay days. Unfortunately I was too young to go and see them live, but my brother saw them play in what is now Paisley University. I first started getting the Move records by folks giving me the odd Regal Zonophone single, and then managed to get the Shazam/Move doubleback. That was it after that, coming across two copies of Message From the Country in a shop I took them both because I didn't think I would see them again. I'm also glad to say that I am the Very proud owner of the Something Else EP which I paid the princely sum of a tenner for round about the Mid 70s, before it came out on a French import. Biggest bit of luck after seeing ELO in their glory on the Face the Music and Out of the Blue Tour (before they lost the plot a bit (my opinion) ) was to see Roy Wood's Army at Airdrie Town hall a few years ago. After telling myself that I would probably never get the chance to see Roy live I noticed ONE small advert in a Sunday paper (pretty poor promotion unfortunately) and I managed to get to see him. Not only the that, supporting him that night was the Legendary Steve Gibbons who is on a par with Roy as being one of my all time heroes! What a night, got to talk to Steve during the interval and talk to Roy at the end of the show. Both of them a real pair of gents who fully appreciate the people that have stuck by them over the years. Incidently I'm managing to get to see Steve Gibbons in March at the Beinn Inn, near Perth. Best Move/Roy wood track--I like them all, Useless information, Mist on a Monday morning, Brontosaurus, California Man the list goes on. My favourite Roy solo has to be Goin' down the road (a Scottish Reggae song) come on, it just has to be! Where else could you get sheep , reggae and bagpipes on the same record? I recently got Eddie and the Falcons on CD, great hearing it again after about 15 odd years, downside was I felt the sound quality/clarity wasn't what you would have expected, maybe it's my ears? Least favourite track, don't have any, the man can do do wrong! (well apart from getting rid of the Naylor Twins who, no disrespect to them, in my view ruin the fantasic sound Roy's Army comes away with!) Other musos that I'm into;- Yes, Average White Band, The Offspring (could be a latter day Move?) Muddy Waters (lucky enough to see him live in Glasow around the late 70s when he supported Eric Clapton, he blew Eric off the stage!) Eric Clapton, Dr Feelgood, Steve Gibbons Band, Roxy Music, early ELO and others too numerous to mention. Any way that's enough of my ramblings. I've only been getting the bulletins for a month or so but they are really fascinating. The depth some of you guys and gals out there go into the subject of Roy and The Move is amazing. I can't wait for some of the re-mastered stuff to come out, particularly Message from the Country. Cheers keep up the good work Lynn. I agree Graeme, all Roy Wood's Warner Bros and Jet Recordings have poor sound quality on the cd's out at the moment. I hope it is that they have used poor copy tapes and that the Masters Rob has found are high sound quality so we can get them when he gets the remastered cd's out. Roy's work has really been let down by these labels. It is long over due putting this right. We are all very lucky Rob has spent so much time and effort finding and getting restored all the tapes he can, including the Move and Idle Race before it was to late! I dare say some of the tapes were in poor condition and required a lot of work to get them restored. A few more years of rotting on a shelf i bet they would have been useless. Shazam has suffered the most - the edited version on CD is awful, Jap one too. The original lp sounds amazing with ex sound quality, nothing at all like the cd version. Also a few A & B sides have been cut down, the worse being I Can Hear The Grass Grow which has lost its wonderful closing riffs. I bet a lot of you have never heard that if you only have it on CD. Still no (We're) On The Road Again and Super Active Wizzo on CD. At least they are going to get released now. March brings us MFTC i am really looking forward to that i bet the outtakes will be amazing. Looks like it will be a great year for us fans. ********** Subject: Re: Move "Duets" Date: Mon, 13 Jan 2003 18:50:50 -0800 From: "Andrew Footman" 1 Are you ready to rock - Jools Holland and his band with Roy Wood (that would Rock) 2 California Man - Cheap Trick and Roy Wood (we know this is good) 3 Wild Tiger Woman - Stereophonics and Carl Wayne (this would be good) 4 The Girl Outside - Robin Williams and Ace Kefford 5 Hello Suzie - The Shazam and Carl Wayne 6 Tonight - Corrs and Roy Wood 7 Omnibus - Muddle Of Mudd and Roy Wood 8 Do Ya - Jeff Healey Band and Jeff Lynne 9 Vote For Me - ZZ Top and Trevor Burton 10 Hey Granma - Moby Grape and Trevor Burton 11 Dance Round The Maypole - Toe Fat and Carl Wayne (I bet that ones got you?) 12 Minister - Baby Chaos and Jeff Lynne (that one too) 13 French Perfume - Jools Holland and Roy Wood (i bet that would be good) 14 When Alice Comes Back To The Farm - Motorhead and RoyWood (that will make your hears bleed) 15 Going Down The Road - Madness and Roy Wood 16 It Wasn't My Idea To Dance - Jethro Tull and Roy Wood (that would be strange BUT GOOD!) ********** Subject: Re: Move "Duets" Date: Mon, 13 Jan 2003 18:50:44 -0800 From: "Tyler C.Sherman" Andy, Regarding your "duets" choice of Cheap Trick & Roy doing "California Man", I have in my archives a so-so quality version of Roy live with the Trick doing "C.Man" together live in Phoenix, Arizona in 1979. But first things first: I'm German, 42 years old, live near Munich - and have been almost a lifelong Roy Wood/ELO fan. Oh, yes, I remember the olden days when the quaint noises of Wizzard filled the airwaves of my old radio-recorder with a true wall of sound. When was that? I reckon it must have been 1973 or 1974. I've loved Roy's music tremendously - just as much as I loved The Move (especially the later, more proggy stuff - sorry, this is a prog fan writing) and ELO - even though I will admit that my favourite ELOs are "World Record" and "Out of the Blue". However, "Roll Over Beethoven" is one of the most influential songs on me of all time - being a guitarist myself. Favourite Roy album is far and away "Mustard" especially the expanded edition. Strange fact #1: for DECADES, I though that Harley Quinne's song "Rock'n'Roll is back again" had something to do with Roy - I mean, it really does sound a bit like him. Well, it's great to be on the list of one of my top 5 favourite musicians/bands. The others? Gentle Giant, Todd Rundgren, Rupert Hine, Pete Townshend, Deep Purple (subject to change occasionally). Right then... Mojo's Celebration of English Eccentrics subtitled: "Sonic Mavericks, Progressive Thinkers, Tweed-Suited Romantics and (Unhinged) Virtuosos" 50 Great Eccentric UK Albums: Credited as "Roy Wood" Wizzard Brew - Harvest 1973 Having been the creative force in The Move before co-founding ELO with Jeff Lynne, Wood formed Wizzard, a cacophonous band of multi-instrumentalists. They achieved three number ones in 1973 but Wizzard Brew defied convention by omitting them in favour of a crazed Spector sound - heavy brass, wild sax solos and little discernible commerciality. By 1974 they'd become outrageously glam practitioners of rock 'n' roll pastiche. Let's discuss the version done by Amen Corner and compare it with the Move version. A lot of Move fans have never heard the Amen Corner version, which was released as a single in 1969 and appears on their "Farewell to the Real Magnificent Seven" album. It was released BEFORE The Move recorded it for their "Shazam" album. If you haven't heard it, Greg Weatherby put a downloadable MP3 on his website for the list (thanks Greg!) http://www.newwavesales.com/HelloSusie.MP3 What some fans of the Move version may not realize is that Roy wrote the song for The Amen Corner (led by Andy Fairweather-Low) and they scored a Top 10 hit in England with it. As we all know, Roy later decided to record his own version. If you want to read up on Amen Corner, the Sounds of the Sixties website has a brief bio: http://www.soundsofthe60s.com/html/artistes/amencorner.htm Which version of "Hello Susie" do you prefer, and why? Give us your thoughts. "Hello Susie" (R. Wood) Everybody sat here waiting for the train to come Just lay down a bright red carpet for her to step on Lookin' to the bend I see her waving her hands at me Her looks were tanned and quite amazing as she ran to me CHORUS: Hello Susie, hello Susie Tell me the news about yourself Hello Susie, hello Susie Tell me that you've enjoyed yourself (WOOO!) Frantically she knocked me over Causing such a scene Shook the crowd enough to sway The interest from the Queen Her black transistor socked out One o'clock radio Completely drowned the band And loud enough to stop the show CHORUS (repeat) Yes sir rock 'n' roll the day away Come on everybody They all seem too keen to make the scene Come on everybody, come on everybody Got to dig me just a while I was all at sea and threw her bags into the car Susie took her bow and made her exit like a star The national news took films which later made history Her looks were tanned and quite amazing as she ran to me CHORUS (repeat) ********** Subject: Re: "Hello Susie" by Amen Corner Date: Mon, 20 Jan 2003 23:27:18 -0800 From: "Greg Weatherby" >Which version of "Hello Susie" do you prefer, and why? Give us your >thoughts. Oh, this is an easy one. I way prefer the Move version, and don't really like the AC version at all. But then, I have to state that I never was much of an Amen Corner fan to begin with. (though I did buy "Gin House" back in 67, I really have no idea why at this point) Andy Fairweather-Low has a weedy voice, IMO, and the whole pseudo soul arrangement doesn't lend itself well to the song. The funky wah wah guitar is annoying, and the ending is off putting. Other than that, it's OK, I suppose! So, when it comes to versions of "Hello Susie", the winner, hands down, 'round this household, is the Move version. ********** Subject: Re: "Hello Susie" by Amen Corner Date: Tue, 21 Jan 2003 10:45:49 -0800 From: "Tyler C.Sherman" No contest! The Move version wins hands down! Those on the list in the UK, of course, were treated to this song via The Amen Corner version first. Those of us in the USA who are even aware of it's existence heard it well after The Move version. I heard it on a compilation of Immediate Records singles I picked up in a bargain bin probably back in the late '70's. It was a yawn to me then and, after listening to the MP3 Greg posted, it's still a yawn. I mean, it's OK but The Move's version simply blows it away. Bear in mind that, as the opening cut on "Shazam", this was the first exposure many of us here in the states had of The Move. I'd heard some Move singles on WNEW-FM in NYC and was crazy about them but was unable to buy them. So when "Shazam" came out here, I remember standing in my local record store staring at it, sort of transfixed. A fellow aspiring guitarist who worked at the store said to me, "When you hear that album, you won't believe your ears". I took it home, put on my turntable, turned it way up and "Hello Susie" came blaring out of my speakers. I was in audio heaven. I remember thinking "This guy Roy Wood is gonna tear the rock music world apart with his bare hands". What a letdown when the record didn't take off. I played for everyone who would listen, the general reaction being, "Ehhhh.... got any Allman Bros.?" Does anyone know if Roy recorded a demo of the song to give to The Amen Corner and, if so, does it still exist? Or was a version by The Move recorded first, shelved and used as a demo and then subsequently redone on "Shazam"? Rob? Also, are there any others (besides me) on the list who have heard the ska version of "Hello Susie" by Buddy Curtis & The Grasshoppers that came out in the mid 80's? Just curious. Wizzards, Tyler ********** Subject: Wizzard Concerts Date: Sun, 19 Jan 2003 09:53:21 -0800 From: "Rob Caiger" A question asked: > Did any of Wizzards concerts get recorded - i have 4 tracks which > were recorded at the Cherokee studios? In America - its a full concert recorded live (ish) in the studio. There is a plan to get this out in 2003 / 04, subject to Roy's approval. There's also a full Wizzard concert on multitrack from November 1972 which awaits a mix and clean up but sounds incredible. Their first London show (Wembley Stadium being in Middlesex and a support slot). Some of the tracks are distorted due to the two drumkits spilling onto everyone else's mics but hopefully can be fixed. We'll see what happens with this during 2003. ********** Subject: Re: Wizzard Concerts Date: Mon, 20 Jan 2003 01:31:35 -0800 From: Larry Harris Hi Rob!
