JOHNNY
A cane like that can come in handy.
BALLIN
It is a most faithful and obedient friend. It is silent when I wish it to be silent, it talks when I wish to talk.
JOHNNY
That's your idea of a friend?
BALLIN
That is my idea of a friend.
JOHNNY
You must lead a gay life.

JOHNNY
(wolf whistles at a woman)
Who's she?
UNCLE PIO
A harpy.
JOHNNY
(laughs and tips UNCLE PIO)
How would you classify me?
UNCLE PIO
(looks at tip)
A peasant.

JOHNNY
I cheat with my own money, sure. But with your money I wouldn't have to cheat. Think it over.
BALLIN
You know, I think I will. How much time do you give me?
JOHNNY
Oh, there's no hurry. You can take a minute or two.

JOHNNY
(punches out Ballin's man, gestures to the cane in Ballin's hand)
You see, this way you'll have two friends. You have no idea how faithful and obedient I can be, for a nice salary.

BALLIN
Gambling and women do not mix.
JOHNNY
Those are the very words I use myself.

JOHNNY
Get this, Mr. Mundson. I was born last night when you met me in that alley. That way I have no past and all future, see? And I like it that way.

BALLIN
What a surprise to hear a woman singing in my house, eh, Johnny?

JOHNNY
(to GILDA dancing with DELGADO)
Pardon me your husband is showing.

JOHNNY
You can't talk to men the way you would at home. They don't understand it.
GILDA
Understand what?
JOHNNY
They think you mean it.
GILDA
Mean what?
JOHNNY
Doesn't it bother you at all that you're married?
GILDA
What I wanna know is, does it bother you?

BALLIN
A man who controls a strategic material can control the world, Johnny.
JOHNNY
Oh now, now, the world's a pretty big place.
BALLIN
Made of stupid little people.

JOHNNY
Maybe the lady forgot to tell you. Her husband lives here.
GABE
For a long long time I've taken husbands little by little, in small doses so that now I've developed a complete immunity to them.

GILDA
(to JOHNNY)
I hate you so much I would destroy myself to take you down with me.

JOHNNY
Statistics show there are more women than anything else in the world. Except insects.

OBREGON
Do me a favour and get out of here before you realise what a heel you've been will you, Mr. Farrell? I couldn't bear to see you break down and feel like a human being. I'm a very sensitive man, for a cop.
