Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is a blue-green necklace surrounded by cliffs in northeastern Utah. Damming the mighty Green River that flows from Wyoming in the north through Utah created this playground that caters mostly to fishers and boaters. At the Red Canyon overlook, a rocky lip hangs over Flaming Gorge's southern rim. It's down, down, down from the Red Canyon rim trail to the water, all 1500 hundred feet of evergreen trees and sharp cliffs.

The Red Canyon rim trail is a pleasant walk among the cool aspens and pines of Ashley National Forest. If you're lucky like us, you'll glimpse some of the local residents, like garter snakes and hawks and a band of mule deer. And if you're unlucky like us, you'll hear the gunshot blasts of hunters and scream all the way back to your car.
