From: Wil Baden Subject: Gen-Abbs98-10-13 \ Script to collect and convert abbreviations to the form \ recognized by word-processor. [UNDEFINED] COMPUTER-AIDED-TYPING [IF] INCLUDE CAT [THEN] ( General Abbreviations ) ( Stage Three of my abbreviation project. In Stage One I made abbreviations for the very most frequent words. In Stage Two I added more abbreviations, trying to keep their lengths short. I reached 2700 abbreviations, reduced them to 1600, and they soon went up to 2900. I was looking for ways to abbreviate as many as I could of the words I might want to use. In doing this I found that having a great many abbreviations isn't effective. Because there were so many, most of the abbreviations that I had I didn't use much or ever. Also my abbreviations are easy for me to remember, but could be difficult for others to learn. The top 10 words will be 20-25 percent of all word occurrences; the top 20 will be around 30 percent; the top 50 close to 40 percent; and the top 150 about 50 percent. Going from 150 to 300 brings it to 56 percent. In Stage Three I started with the intersection of American top 500 and British top 500. I discarded words that I couldn't give a suitable abbreviation and words that I just don't use frequently. This gave about 300 words. I then added the related word-forms. The idea is that if I know a word has an abbreviation, then all its forms have also. This yielded 570 words. I next added abbreviations that you might coin in taking or passing notes, or write on the blackboard. The idea here is that the abbreviations be understood. Some old abbreviations were made longer to be clearer. In Stage Three I adopt _de facto_ abbreviations. Many words are in the list for completeness. For example, I know PVT means "private" so PVTS must mean "privates", although I don't think I ever have or ever will use it. But I might. I keep the count to no more than 1000. That number is arbitrary of course, but it is a great help. Whenever I came across a word I thought belonged in the list, I would have to throw out one or more words I had previously adopted. These words reflect my use, and someone else's selection will probably be different. But it's a good start. Throw away words you don't use frequently enough and add words you think should be there. To these General Abbreviations I added Special Abbreviations particular to my writing. These are for convenience -- their effect won't be much. They definitely will be different for other people. For instance, I want "ABB.S abbreviation" for writing about this project. These two words are missing from the American top 5000 and the British top 8000. I've tried to keep that count low, but it's reached 220. As I go along, when I see I'm not using a family of abbreviations, I'll discard it. In these 1220 words there are 623 families, so you could count the number of abbreviations as 623. I'm hitting 60-70 percent of my word occurrences. When I come across a candidate now, it's unlikely to be adopted. After such a long time the candidate is not a frequently used word. Finally, there are phrases. There would be a lot more if I were using abbreviations for reporting, chat, or writing novels. Most of a general collection of most frequent written words are in anyone's most frequent words. There also will be words that don't occur frequently in your own writing. Here is the intersection of the 500 most frequent words in American use according to the Brown Corpus of 1961 and in British use according to the LOB -- Lancaster Oslo-Bergen -- Corpus of the 1970s. Words in all upper case are words for which I couldn't find a suitable abbreviation or that I personally don't use with great frequency. It eliminates the American and British biases. However I think "toward" should be put back for American, and "round" and "towards" for British. When choosing an abbreviation, consider how often you'll use it and how many letters you'll save. Also consider how easy will it be for you to recollect the abbreviation. For all except short very frequent words save at least 3 characters. If you're going to use these for hand-writing, try: "_" or "-" for "the" and final "d". "+" for "and". "s" for "is". On final "s" after most letters, leave out final downstroke. Do this on "s" for "is". Write final "ing" or final "g" as a short horizontal becoming a down stroke. Families of related words.
