(From the Dallas Morning news) 7/20 Dick Motta on Roy Tarpley's unexpected visit on July 18: "He just walked into my office. You could have knocked me over with a feather." "It was a nice visit, a social thing. We shook hands and talked about old times. I told him how lousy he looked with his earring. He enjoyed himself, and I did too." 7/20 Motta had breakfast with unrestricted free agent and long time Mav Rolando Blackman. They talked about what Ro wanted to do. Motta expressed his two concerns about adding Ro to the team: "One, we were two to three years away from where he would want to be and two, Jackson and Dumas need to get the two guard minutes." Motta said that he has also "toyed with the idea" of adding Ro as an assistant. Ro has said that he wants to play one more season, but if that doesn't come through, he would be open to returning to the Mavs to fill the vacant broadcasting role that opened when Brad Davis became an assistant coach. Motta: "We're not close to anything right now. I think Ro just wants to sort through his options right now and decide if he wants to play or do something else." 7/21 At the start of practice the first day of the training camp, Terry Davis said to Jamal Mashburn, "Things are so loose, so much more relaxed. Everybody is laughing and having fun. I like the atmosphere. I can see a difference." [Unfortunately, there wasn't much reported about the camp besides Kidd missing it and, as previously reported, being impressed with Melvin Booker's performance.] 7/22 Speaking of Terry Davis, he is doing great. He can now extend his arm 117 of 180 degrees (when he left for surgery in the middle of last season, he could only extend it 26 degrees). Said trainer Doug Atkinson, "We'd like to get a couple of more degrees with his extension, but that would be icing on the cake. We're very happy with it right now." Davis: "I've never been a great shooter. What I do best is rebound and play defense. In that respect, it doesn't limit me at all." Motta: "He's tough. He's setting really good screens, and he's working his tail off. He's been out there diving for the ball in every practice." Terry is bench pressing 325 lbs. That is only 25 lbs less than what he was able to do before the accident. 7/28 As part of composing a contract proposal for Roy Tarpley, GM Norm Sonju asked director of player personnel Keith Grant to decided where Tarpley would rank among the top _centers_ in the league. This would seem to indicate that the Mavs would plan on utilizing Tarpley mostly at center, not forward, if he rejoined the team. (From the Mavericks Press) Jason Kidd will wear #5 and Tony Dumas will wear #7. During the off season weight program, Jamal Mashburn has improved his bench press to 315 lbs and added 10 lbs of muscle. With Horace Grant no longer on the market, the Mavs are not going after any free agents. Assistant coach Brad Davis will "take Kidd under his wing." I finally got a number for the attendance of the Mavs draft party. 4,500 fans were crammed into the Hyatt's ballroom.
