It was again an extremely small crowd. Starters Minnesota: Tom Gugliotta, Sam Mitchell, Christian Laettner, Doug West, Micheal Williams Dallas: Jamal Mashburn, Popeye Jones, Loren Meyer, Jim Jackson, Jason Kidd Meyer picked up his 3rd foul in the first 3 minutes. Dallas was up 13-8 and Mashburn had 9 points. Kidd also contributed 6 points and Dallas was up 17-8. Minnesota went on a 14-4 run to take the lead at 22-21 with 4 minutes remaining as Dallas was ice cold. After 1, Minnesota led 26-25. Mashburn had 15 points on 7-9 FG and Kidd had 3 steals. Popeye was ice cold in the quarter as he missed at least 6 shots. The 2nd quarter was ugly. As usual, the Dallas starters sat. Minnesota started the quarter with a 14-3 run and was up 40-28 with 8 minutes left. None of the Mavs could find the rim. Minnesota led 44-30 with 5 minutes left and Motta re-inserted the 3 Js. They helped a little and Minnesota led 50-39 at the half. Dallas only shot 3-17 FG in the quarter. For the half, Minnesota shot 46% FG and Dallas shot 33% FG. The Minnesota bench out scored Dallas' 22-9. Mitchell had 8 points on 4-4 FG, Kevin Garnett had 6 points and 5 rebounds, Terry Porter had 6 points, West had 6 points, and former Mav Sean Rooks had 6 points. Mashburn had 20 points including 8-12 FG in 17 minutes and Kidd had 6 points including 2-9 FG, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. In the 3rd, Minnesota led 65-60 with 7 minutes left. Dallas went on a 8-0 run behind Popeye and Jackson to cut Minnesota's led to 65-48 with 4:40 left. After 3, Minnesota led 81-72. As usual for the pre-season, the 3 Js sat the entire 4th. Minnesota led 86-79 with 7:50 left and 90-84 with 6:15 left. Tony Dumas had 2 3-pointers in the quarter. Minnesota was only up by 3 at 92-89 with 4:25 left and by 1 at 94-93 with 3:15 to go. An offensive foul on Marques Bragg and a free throw by Lucious Harris tied the game at 94-94 with 2:52 left. Dallas had come back from a 15 point deficit. George McCloud hit his first shot of the game to give Dallas a brief lead. Porter answered with a 3 pointer. 97-96 Minnesota 2 minutes. 2 free throws by Meyer, a Porter jumper, and a free throw by Darrick Martin left the score at 100-98 Minnesota with 1:11 left. The teams traded baskets. 31 seconds. Harris hit a tough runner for his first basket of the game. 102-102 17 seconds. [The bench was playing for both teams.] Porter missed a layup as the clock ran down but Rooks was there to tip it in at the buzzer. Minnesota 104-102. Give the Dallas bench some credit for (finally) stepping up and making it a close game in the 4th. Popeye Jones also came back from a lousy first quarter to end up with a great game. He had 17 points and 14 rebounds for the game. Motta on why he inserted the 3 Js in the middle of the 2nd quarter: "I got mad. When I put those other guys in, it wasn't to try to close the score. It was to keep them from getting killed. I was going to kill them, or [Minnesota] was."
