I now have the dates for the Mavs family Nights. For $49 you get 4 tickets, 4 Dr. Peppers, 4 hot dogs, and a parking pass. Apparently you have to have the coupon from the Dallas Morning News. The games are (besides Friday's Atlanta game which they did such a great job advertising for): Nov 9 Thursday Milwaukee Dec 12 Tuesday Seattle Jan 30 Tuesday LA Clippers Feb 25 Sunday Toronto Mar 31 Sunday Portland Just some short notes and the box scores from the pre-season games. Atlanta at Dallas (pre-season, October 27) Terry Davis did not play due to recovering from a mild concussion. The Mavs played a very good game for the first 15 minutes while Atlanta struggled. For the first quarter, Atlanta only shot 5-21 FG and Dallas led 26-13. Dallas built that up to a 17 point lead early in the 2nd quarter. It went down hill from there. Atlanta's shotting percentage slow increased with the help Dallas' poor interior defense and Dallas couldn't hit anything. Dallas led at halftime 51-42. After 3, Dallas' lead was down to 72-68. Atlanta took the lead for a while the 4th, but Dallas came back and took a small lead. Spud Webb hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 94-94 and send it into overtime. Jason Kidd and Loren Meyer dominated the overtime as Meyer scored 7 points off the pick and roll. Dallas won 108-101. Meyer showed a lot of promise in this game. He didn't get into foul trouble and finished with 20 points on 10-16 FG and 12 rebounds. There were times where he was eaten alived on defense and other times where he did a very good job keeping his player off the block. Jason Kidd also had a very good game with a near triple-double. He had 18 points, 12 assists, and 8 rebounds. Alan Henderson took full advantage of the Mavs' defensive lapses (mostly by Parks and Meyer) and had 23 points including 11-17 FG and 17 rebounds. Jim Jackson left the game late in the 1st and did not return due to tendinitis in his left ankle. Team doctor T.O. Souryal said that Jackson had broke through some of the scar tissue that had formed on the ankle, which is the one he sprained last season, causing inflammation and tightness. Souryal: "This is going to be the nature of the beast, I'm afraid, and Jim knows it; we talked about it last year. Anytime you have an injury like this, there are going to be aches and there are going to be pains." He should be able to play for Friday's season opener in San Antonio. The first quarter was really ugly. The Mavs couldn't hit anything and they just didn't look like they were in the game. The only thing uglier was the halftime show. The Lakers led 34-19 after 1. The Lakers had their largest lead at 49-26 and led 58-41 at halftime. Lucious Harris opened the 2nd half with 3 3-pointers and the Mavs went on a 21-9 run to get back into the game. I want a copy of Motta's halftime speech - the players didn't come out from halftime until 3 minutes before the 3rd quarter. It was a whole different game. The Lakers only led by 1 at 73-72 after 3. The Mavs took their first lead in ages at 80-79 3 1/2 minutes into the 4th on a basket by Jamal Mashburn. Scott Brooks' 3-pointer gave the Mavs their largest lead at 94-85 halfway through the quarter. The Lakers then went on a 12-2 run capped by a tip-in by Elden Campbell to put the Lakers up 97-96 with a minute left. The hero of the game was Jason Kidd who drove for a layup with 50 seconds left to put the Mavs up by one and he swished the clutch jumper from the top of the key (it was almost a 3-pointer - his foot was on the line) with 15 seconds left. Sedale Threatt's 3-pointer rimmed out with 3 seconds left. Meyer was the star rookie from Friday night and Parks was the star rookie from Saturday. Meyer was plagued with foul trouble. Parks grabbed some good boards and showed some nice offensive flashes (including slamming home one of Mashburn's misses) and finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Cedric Ceballos really impressed me. He showed his all-star form with some veteran offensive moves and benefited from some break away slams. It did help that he was playing shooting guard most of the game (though Harris and Dumas didn't do all that bad of a defensive job on him).
