Okay, I've finally gotten through all those Morning News sports pages that have been laying around my (still not completely unpacked) apartment since my move to Dallas while I've been enthralled with the playoffs. So here is some old and new Mavs (and not quite Mavs) news. Dick Motta has again scheduled two mini-camps this summer. They will occur July 18-21 and September 6-9. Considering how successful last year's camps were, this is very good news. Jason Kidd and Jim Jackson will be visiting each other this summer to spend time and work out together. If you caught the ESPN UpClose interview with Jimmy, you heard him say that he would describe his relationship with Jason as "best friends". Jason Kidd was supposedly on the Tonight Show Monday, May 29. Did anyone see it? He and Grant Hill appeared as in-house guests during two of TNT's broadcasts. Jason proved to be the better predictor of winners and the both proved that they did not play with etch-a-sketches much as kids. Jason is also the (honorary?) chairman of this year's Hoop It Up (the original and celebrating its 10th anniversary). Jamal Mashburn is again working on the weights this summer. Third hand story: Randy White bumped into Jamal at the airport and said, "Geez, Jamal, you know that you are a small forward, not a power forward?" Not Mavs, but still ... If you take Reggie Miller's 8 points in 9 seconds performance from the NY-Ind series and expand it to 48 minutes, he would have scored 2,560 points. Popeye Jones received 3 votes in the Most Improved voting (Dana Barros won with 50 of 105 media votes). One of Popeye's votes did _not_ come from the Dallas voters. Despite missing 31 games, Jim Jackson received a first and a second All Defensive Team vote. Jason Kidd received a second All Defensive Team vote. (The teams are selected by the coaches and a coach can't vote for his own players.) From the 93-94 to the 94-95 season paid attendance rose 39%, television ratings rose 90%, concession revenues rose 77%, and souvenir sales rose 28%. The Mavs announced their ticket prices hike. Highlighting the need for a new arena with luxury boxes, even though the Mavs ranked 13th in attendance this season (16,547 average), the Mavs ranked 20th in average gate receipts and 25th in average ticket prices. Those season ticket holders who have held on to their tickets since 92-93 will still be playing 92-93 prices (next year will hurt). The increases: 94-95 95-96 $46 $50 $36 $40 $28 $22 $24 $27 $22 $27 $19 $24 (this was listed as $20, but there wasn't a $20 $15 $19 listing on the pocket schedule from 94-95) $13 $15 $5 $5 Former VP of Player Personnel Rick Sund will must likely join Detroit in the front office once his contract with Seattle expires July 1. Sund has being a consultant for the Supersonics for the past year and is doing some draft scouting for them. [BTW, you can hear Sund talk basketball for an hour from 8 to 9 Wednesdays on the Ticket 1310.] Players who I have heard/read having been in Dallas for workouts: David Vaughn (6-9, 240 lb, Memphis, F) for #12 pick - the Mavs liked him Mario Bennett (6-10, 230 lb, Arizona State, F) for #12 - the Mavs are real high on him, but think he will be gone Jason Caffey (6-8, 240 lb, Alabama, F) for #24 Greg Ostertag (7-0, 279, Kansas, C) for #24 - coaches did not like his perfomance Other names being batted around who will probably visit: Alan Henderson, Rashard Griffth, Bryant Reeves, Charokee Parks, George Zidek, to name a few. The coaching staff and scouts are up in Chicago for the Chicago Draft Camp. Unfortunately, Mario Bennett is doing really well in the camp (most of the top players elected not to play) and his stock is rising. patricia
