Dallas now has 41 wins. That's a .500 season. They also have a very good shot at 50 wins (despite having a tough remaining schedule). The Mavs won 40 games last season. Greg Buckner returned to action for Clippers game after missing 3 games due to a sprained left foot. Golden State at Dallas (March 9) Dallas scored 6 straight points to take an early 12-6 lead with 9 minutes remaining and never looked back. Dallas slowly added to their lead and led 34-23 after 1. Dallas shot 13-25 FG and Golden State shot 6-22 FG. Dirk Nowitzki had 13 points. Dallas opened the 3rd quarter with a 8-2 run to take a 42-25 lead with 9:30 remaining. Golden State answered with a 12-2 run to pull within 37-44 with 4:50 left while Dallas missed 7 consecutive shots. Dallas led 52-43 at the half. Golden State pulled within 5 points at 49-54, but Dallas answered by scoring the next 10 points to go up 64-49 with 7 minutes to go. Dallas led in the teens the rest of the quarter. Dallas led Dallas ld 73-58 after 3. Dallas led 79-67 with 8 minutes to go and scored the next 17 points (yes, 17) to make the game a complete blowout at 96-67 with 2:35 left. Dallas won 102-73. This should have been an easy win and it was. Dallas did not shoot very well at 41.8% FG, but Golden State was much worse at 31.6% FG. Dirk Nowitzki had a monster game with 32 points on 9-16 FG and 14-17 FT and 8 rebounds. Shawn Bradley continued his strong performances with 12 points, 20 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Juwan Howard was solid with 15 points and 9 rebounds and Michael Finley was content to be the contributor with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. Steve Nash was the 5th Mav in double-digits with 12 points and 7 assists in only 27 minutes. The Mavs were able to contain Antawn Jamison who only had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Marc Jackson, who is having a strong rookie year, had 15 points on a very poor 4-18 FG and 12 rebounds. Bob Sura was the only other Warrior in double-digits with 11 points. Quotes Don Nelson on Golden State's woes: "I feel for them more than anything. I don't play the irony game." Nelson: "This is just what the doctor ordered. What looks like an easy win wasn't as easy as that score. But it was a good start to the homestand. I hope we keep it rolling." Nelson: "I thought we played stretches of the game where we looked pretty good, like we were moving the ball and playing together - doing the things that good teams do. I really like to see that." Nelson: "To me, it was on the defensive end that we were really good and found something that was working. We were trapping the ball and Shawn was a big factor defensively, keeping people from the rim." Nelson: "This is an important stretch in the season because we can distance ourselves from the 8th spot or 9th spot and not get into competition for that. To me that's what this is all about. If we can get through this with flying colors then we can concentrate on people ahead of us and not behind us." Dirk Nowitzki: "It really worked out well. In the 1st half we started out well, but they kind of found a way to stick in the game with loose balls and offensive rebounds. We knew we had to turn it up because they could come back in the game with a couple of 3s. We started pressing them and started scrambling a little bit. It worked great and won the game." Steve Nash: "We have to take care of teams that are sub .500 and out of the playoff race. You can't afford to lose one of these games. It was a big game for us because Golden State is dangerous." Nash: "When Shawn comes to play, it's pivotal for us. He's able to affect the game at the defensive end so much." Juwan Howard on his monster reverse dunk in the 3rd quarter: "It's been about a year since I had a dunk like that. It felt good to just finish the play because Steve Nash led me perfectly to the basket. I knew there was some big guys coming to try to block the shot. I just tried to take it strong to the hole." Howard: "Our defensive intensity was key tonight. Getting out there and making steals, getting deflections, and that's what allowed Dirk to get out on the breaks and get some easy baskets and dunks. We came out strong in the 1st quarter, but we got way too relaxed in the 2nd quarter and Golden State took advantage of that." Shawn Bradley: "I just had to try to go out and do what my team needed me to do. We just worked hard. I guess all that's a product of just trying to come in and do what the team needs you to do." Dave Cowens: "I thought we played a pretty good game. We were hard-nosed and played good defense. And at the end, it was an embarrassment." Cowens: "We were doing all right until they pressed us. The press took us out of everything we wanted to do." Cowens on Bradley: "They set that big boy back in there, played him a lot of minutes. Said, 'go ahead and attack the basket' and they sent him back in there. So, it's a good strategy. If you have a guy that can control the paint like that and block shots and makes you shoot perimeter, it takes time off, it makes you scramble." Antawn Jamison: "They made a run at us and we didn't come back and make a run on them. That's what great teams do. When they make a run on you, you come back and make a run on them and we didn't do that." Jamison: "We just didn't execute. We just missed the shots when we were getting good looks at the basket. We just weren't putting them down." Jamison on Bradley: "People say, 'Oh, he's not tough, he's not this, he's not that.' But he's a great player in my opinion. You're intimidated before you walk on the court. He's a presence. And he helps any team that he plays for because he knows how to zone up on situations and make himself bigger than what he is, and that's a major statement." Marc Jackson: "They did a good job. They went on a good run. With all the weapons they have, they were able to keep doing that. They are a great team and a good team to watch out for. We just didn't capitalize, they made a run on us, but we didn't come back and make a run on them." The teams traded baskets and the Clippers scored the next 8 points to pull within 16-18 with 4:45 remaining. Dallas then went on a 10-2 run to go up 28-18 with 2:22 to go. Dallas led 32-23 after 1. Juwan Howard had 11 points and Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points including 4-6 FG. Dallas maintained a 5 to 12 point lead during the 2nd quarter. A layup by Nowitzki at the buzzer gave Dallas a 63-50 lead at the half. Nowitzki had 12 points on 5-5 FG in the quarter. Dallas shot 13-21 FG and the Clippers shot 9-15 FG. Dallas put the game away early as they pushed their lead up to 77-57 with 7:15 remaining. Dallas closed the quarter with a 7-2 mini-run to go up 92-68 after 3. The Clippers only shot 5-18 FG in the quarter while Dallas shot 11-21 FG. The 4th quarter was pure garbage time as only 2 Mavs starters played and they only played a total of 3 minutes. Dallas' lead ranged between 17 and 26 points. Dallas won 111-93. Same song, second verse: This should have been an easy win and it was. The Mavs set the tone in the 1st quarter and never really let up (okay, there was a slight slump in the 2nd quarter, but they stomped on the Clippers to end the 2nd and start the 3rd). The Mavs had a season high 32 assists. Dirk Nowitzki was the man in the 1st half with 22 points including 9-11 FG - he only attempted 1 field goal in the 2nd half. Steve Nash was the man in the 3rd quarter with 10 points on 2 layups and 2 3-pointers and no misses. Nash finished with 16 points and 7 assists. Michael Finley again was content to not be the star but a solid contributor with 14 points and 8 assists. Juwan Howard continued to play well with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Shawn Bradley had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. No one on the Clippers really had a good game. Quentin Richardson was the high man with 15 points, but 9 of those came in garbage time. Corey Maggette did have a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, but he shot a mere 2-12 FG along with 10-12 FT. Quotes Don Nelson: "So far we're right on schedule for playing this homestand the way that I hoped we would play it. We came out in an outstanding start and just kept the pedal to the metal basically. The game plan was solid and the players all played well and hard. The coach has no complaints about anything." Nelson on Howard: "Juwan is now establishing that low post for us and we're getting a really good rhythm going. I like it a lot." Nelson on 40 wins: "Well, we had to do it sometime. It's pretty early. I never would have dreamed that we'd do it this early but I thought we were going to pass it. I thought we'd probably get maybe 44-45 wins. I didn't think we'd have a chance for 50 like maybe we do, but we keep playing at a high level and you just never know where it's going to lead." Nelson: "It's working out like I hoped. We're separating ourselves from missing the playoffs. Let that be somebody else's battle. Not ours." Dirk Nowitzki: "We try to run on every team, not just the Clippers. That's our game and we know that's how we get easy baskets. We also know the Clippers are a team where everyone goes to the offensive glass. They have a lot of high-flyers and they try to make a lot of dunks." Nowitzki on 40 wins: "There's no satisfaction yet. It shows that we have a great team, but we need to try to win as much as we can. Once we get to the playoffs, we'll just have to see what happens." Steve Nash on the non-celebration on 40 wins: "We have more on our mind than 40 wins. We expected to get there at some point. Now we're looking for 50." Nash: "40 is nice, but we've got more on our minds than that. Getting to 50 is the next threshold. Whatever it takes to make the playoffs." Nash: "This is how it's supposed to work. We've got good balance, and we're starting to roll pretty good." Nash: "Creating matchup problems is our strength right now. Obviously, we are going to try and exploit that in every game. I think our team is becoming more versatile and with our cohesion as a team, our versatility is even going beyond the versatility of individuals. ... We are able to stretch out the defense and we're playing smarter." Juwan Howard on his play with Dallas: "It's my teammates and the coaching staff and Coach Nelson. They helped make my transition come a lot sooner than expected. I hope I can be consistent and click on all cylinders." Howard on the running game: "That's always been a strength of mine. I just try to beat my opponent up the court. With this team, you just have to find open lanes and these guys will get you the ball." Alvin Gentry: "That team is a bad matchup for us. They throw so many different lineups out there. You've got to try to control the tempo against them and we did a terrible job of controlling the tempo. We can't try to play a 60 point half against them. The only way we can play teams like that is the same way we played Sacramento. The game has to be in the 80s. It can't be in the 110s. We get ourselves in trouble trying to do that. We're not an up-and-down team." Gentry: "They're just a bad matchup for us. We can't play at that fast of a tempo." Gentry: "We quick-shot the ball. We didn't make smart plays. It started early in the game and it just carried over. If we're going to play a team like that, we've got to make real smart plays. We didn't do that. I thought we got out-hustled for the first time in a long time. They beat us to loose balls." Gentry: "We have a tough time with Bradley. He always seems to play well against us." Gentry: "Steve Nash seemed to control the game. He controls the game when we play them." Gentry on missing Odom: "We're not going to use Lamar as an excuse. He is a great player for us but I look at a team like Miami. They lose great players and they keep playing. That's the attitude that we need to have. ... Guys just have to step up and play until we get him back. We can't have pity parties for ourselves. This is the NBA and there's not one team that is going to feel sorry for us." Michael Olowokandi: "They are a very unselfish team. They really pass the ball around. We always have a hard time keeping their guards in front of us. It would be one thing if it was just one guy to stop, like Philadelphia and Iverson, but they have too many guys who can beat us off the dribble. Then, they have too many guys who can spot up and wait for a pass to shoot a 3-pointer." Corey Maggette: "I think this is the most difficult team to play against. They have so many shooters on the floor and when they drive the ball, if you try to help, you leave open a Michael Finley or a Dirk Nowitzki, and they capitalize off of it." Quentin Richardson: "We came out of timeouts and turned the ball over or didn't even get a shot up." Richardson: "We need to execute a lot better than we did today. We came out of timeouts and turned it over. We weren't really executing at all and they were taking us out of a lot of stuff." Cherokee Parks: "When they are playing defense, there are rebounds all day. Their guys are taking off as soon as a shot goes up. ... They play like a really good rec team. Everyone is relaxed. They play together and it looks like they are having a lot of fun. ... They are so different than any other team in the league." There were some sloppy plays, but the teams were playing tough. A layup by Michael Finley with less than 2 seconds remaining gave Dallas a 28-25 lead after 1. Evan Eschmeyer had 9 points as the Nets took advantage of the Mavs doubling off of him. Dallas pushed their lead to 7 points at 34-27 with 10:40 left, but New Jersey stayed in the game and even briefly took a 1 point lead at 45-44 with 3:40 to go. Stephon Marbury got a layup with 5 seconds remaining, but Dallas quickly pushed the ball up the court and Steve Nash dished back to Finley who drained a straight up 3-pointer a foot behind the line that swished through at the buzzer. Dallas led 56-52 at the half. Juwan Howard had 10 points, Finley had 10 points, and Marbury had 9 points in the quarter. Keyon Martin sprained his ankle late in the 2nd quarter (but stayed on the court) and did not play in the 2nd half. Keith Van Horn opened the 3rd quarter with a jumper and Dallas then went on a 19-4 monster run, including 3 consecutive 3-pointers - 1 by Finley and 2 by Dirk Nowitzki, to go up 75-58 with 7:40 remaining. New Jersey pulled within 10 points at 73-83 with 3 minutes to go and Dallas then scored the next 7 points. Dallas led 90-74 after 3. Nowitzki had 10 points in the 3rd quarter. New Jersey pulled within 80-92 with 9:15 remaining and a 3-pointer by Nowitzki started a 13-1 run to make it a blowout at 105-81 with 5:20 left. Dallas won 122-98. Same song, third verse: This should have been an easy win and it was. Actually, it wasn't quite that easy. The 1st half was tough as New Jersey was playing well and the Mavs weren't quite clicking. The Mavs kicked it into another gear to start the 3rd quarter and in the 4th to make it a blowout. Dallas was sharing the ball really well as they again had a season high 32 assists. After 4 straight games under 20 points, Michael Finley returned to the limelight with 25 points on 11-18 FG and 3-3 3-pointers. Juwan Howard was high man with 27 points including 11-11 FT and 9 rebounds and Dirk Nowitzki had 25 points including 3-4 3-pointers and 10-10 FT and 7 rebounds. Steve Nash was quiet offensively (though he did have 2 of his trademark layups [do opponents read his scout sheet???]) with only 6 points, but he dished out 11 assists. Shawn Bradley chipped in 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Vernon Maxwell was the 5th Mav in double-digits with 11 points (8 of which game in garbage time). You know it wasn't a good night for New Jersey when Johnny Newman (crafty vet that he is) is the high man with 18 points. Stephon Marbury only had 15 points and 6 assists to go with 7 turnovers. Keith Van Horn only had 9 points in 25 foul limited minutes. Rookie Keyon Martin only had 7 points in a half of play. Those 3 games (Golden State, LA Clippers, New Jersey) were the cream puffs. Now the schedule gets tough. The Mavs' remaining 18 games are Minnesota, Phoenix, Portland, @ Minnesota, Charlotte, @ Utah, @ Portland, @ LA Lakers, @ Sacramento, @ Houston [road trip from hell], Atlanta, Utah, @ San Antonio, @ Phoenix, Sacramento, @ Seattle, @ Golden State, and Minnesota. Quotes Don Nelson on using a defensive trap after halftime: "Sometimes we're not strong enough defensively to play teams straight up. It was a tight game and I was tired of fooling around. Tonight, I called for something and it worked perfectly, what do you know." Nelson: "When we've got 3 scorers clicking like tonight, we're pretty tough to defend. It's really starting to look nice out there." Michael Finley: "That's been our mindset going into these games - that we should win." Finley: "We've only half-finished the job. We expected to win these 3 games; now we've got to get 3 more and really prove our point." Finley: "The games we should win, like the team we just played, we have to win. The games against the teams that are above us in the playoff race, we have to at least get half of those. Then we'll be secure." Finley on his 3-pointer at the end of the half: "We played well for the first quarter and a half, then went on a little bit of a lull there. It was a good time to get back rolling again." Steve Nash on the trap: "Marbury is unstoppable one-on-one, so we just wanted to get him out of his rhythm. He is their rhythm, and tonight we got him out of his comfort zone. The trap kind of got them in disarray." Nash: "I almost didn't need to shoot tonight. It's great to be able to come down the floor and get everyone involved and create plays for other players." Nash: "We really don't care who gets the points and who gets the assists. We're just trying to be a versatile team." Juwan Howard: "These weren't easy games. Sometimes when you play teams like this, it's easy to relax. We have to give ourselves some credit. We've been playing good basketball." Howard: "I don't get into all those adjectives describing my comfort level here. I'm just happy to be here. My transition as far as coming here has moved quicker than I expected." Shawn Bradley: "Our offense has clicked a lot better than that. We just scored a lot of points." Bradley: "At halftime we all said if we could each step it up a notch, we'd be okay. That's what we did. We came out hot there in the 2nd half." Bryon Scott: "I think it was a lack of concentration. I don't think they did a heck of a lot to cause the turnovers. A lot of them were just careless mistakes." Scott on losing Martin: "When he went out that really hurt us. He's been playing so well at both ends of the court and he can match up against most of the guys they have out there. When he went out, it changed the scheme of things, the way we attack people. He just means a lot to us right now. Him not being able to come back out at halftime, I knew we were in bad shape." Scott on losing Martin: "I knew we were going to be in a little bit of bad shape because we already had foul trouble and then we're losing a guy who's been playing extremely well. It really hurt us when he went out." Stephon Marbury: "We didn't take care of the ball." Keyon Martin on spraining his ankle: "I went up to get a rebound with Juwan and came down on the floor. I kept playing but after I settled down at halftime it started throbbing." [He's questionable for Thursday's Houston game.] Martin on sitting out the 2nd half: "My mom and everybody was here to see me play and I only played one half. That kind of [stunk], but that's the way it goes sometimes. I hate not playing. I was a little upset at halftime, knowing I was not going to be able to go." Evan Eschmeyer: "They're a great offensive team. They really are. But that's no excuse. We prided ourselves on defense all year. To give up 120 points is inexcusable. We'll never win a game giving up 120 points. Ever."
