The NBA fined Mark Cuban $100,000 and suspended him for 1 game for making a derogatory gesture at the refs during the Phoenix game and for his comments about the officiating following the game. Cuban said that he made the choking sign following a missed call. His comments after the game were that he would not vote for the proposed rule changes (which passed) as the refs couldn't call the game correctly now. The Mavs are hopeful that Greg Buckner will be able to play in the playoffs. He is reportedly doing well and MRIs showed that he did not suffer any further damage when he dislocated his left kneecap. He is eligible to come off IR Monday and may even be activated for one or both of the final 2 games. Dallas at San Antonio (April 10) San Antonio shot out to an 11-2 lead with 7:15 left as Dallas forgot to show up. Dallas finally arrived and answered with an 11-2 run to tie the game at 13-13 with 4 minutes left. San Antonio led 21-20 after 1. Tim Duncan had 12 points. The game stayed close in the 2nd quarter with Dallas' largest lead being 1 point and San Antonio's largest lead was 5 points. San Antonio closed the quarter with an 8-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Derek Anderson at the buzzer, to go up 47-42 at the half. San Antonio continued their run by scoring the first 6 points of the 3rd quarter and led 53-42 with 9:15 remaining. Dallas' cut San Antonio's lead down to 58-52 with 4:30 to go, but the Spurs went on a 13-2 run to take their largest lead at 68-52 with a minute left. San Antonio led 70-57 after 3 as Terry Porter drained a jumper at the quarter's end. Dallas only had 15 points in the 3rd quarter. David Robinson had 13 points and 6 rebounds in the 3rd. San Antonio led 80-67 with 3:20 left and Michael Finley nailed consecutive 3-pointers to pull Dallas within 73-80 with 2:40 to go. Duncan hit 5 straight free throws to put San Antonio up 85-73 with 1:50 left and Finley hit 2 free throws and another 3-pointer to pull Dallas back within 7 points at 78-85 with a minute remaining. But Sean Elliott answered with a 3-pointer of his own to clinch the win. San Antonio won 91-79. Well, this game wasn't pretty, especially with Dallas' lapse at the end of the 2nd quarter and the beginning of the 3rd quarter. The Mavs had no answer for San Antonio's big men as Tim Duncan had 25 points and 10 rebounds and David Robinson had a monster game with 34 points on 14-18 FG and 6-11 FT and 11 rebounds. The Mavs' simply couldn't defend Duncan, with Juwan Howard looking the worst of the defenders that were thrown at him. The Mavs simply kept loosing Robinson on defense and he ended up with 9 dunks. The Mavs' big men (even Wang Zhizhi was inserted to try to do something to help) did not give the needed defensive performance in this game - don't need to list them as only Calvin Booth had any affect. No other Spur besides Duncan and Robinson was in double-digits. Dallas was led by Michael Finley's 25 points, 14 of which came in the 4th quarter. He also had 7 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki had 20 points, but picked up 3 fouls in the 1st quarter. Juwan Howard had 16 points including 6-17 FG and only 3 rebounds. A very poor game for Howard. Calvin Booth was the only Mav with a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Don Nelson opted to rest Steve Nash in the 4th quarter as he sat the entire quarter. The Spurs definitely had home court advantage in this game. The reffing was pretty lopsided. I was at the game and didn't get to see the numerous replays when Danny Ferry barreled into Shawn Bradley and Bradley was called for the foul. I did get to see the replay where David Robinson knocked the ball out of Bradley's hands and it was Dallas' ball out of bounds and the replay clearly showed Robinson hacking Bradley across the arms. They only showed it once, of course. I'm not blaming the refs for the loss, but it was a poor job by the officiating crew. Quotes Gregg Popovich on Robinson's back: "He was moving well tonight. He got loose. He's had a twinge in his back, so we sat him last game. He felt good tonight." David Robinson: "That's definitely turning back the clock on all those dunks. I like the fast paced game, I've always liked the fast paced game, and they like to get it up and down the floor. So I ran real well tonight, and they rewarded me with a lot of passes." Robinson on his sore back: "This morning I felt a little sore but I had a good pregame warmup and stretched it out and it felt pretty good after that." Robinson: "I just tried to keep it loose and keep it warm. I knew that I'd have to sit some at the end of quarters and at the half. But we stretched it out and it felt real good in the 2nd half." Tim Duncan: "It was Big D's night. He cleaned up on the defensive end, rebounded and dunked over everybody." Malik Rose on Robinson: "I think that's the closest to the David of old that I'm going to see." Don Nelson: "David was the difference. I thought we had a decent game plan, but we didn't have him penciled in for 34. He rose to the occasion and had a great game. Give him a lot of credit." Nelson on playing Bradley and Booth: "We tried our tall ball, but we need a little more muscle on our tall ball," Steve Nash: "David Robinson played great and caused a lot of problems for us tonight, but more than that, we just didn't score. You can't score 80 points or less and expect to win many games in this league. We played awful, but still managed to hang around a little bit." Juwan Howard: "They deserved to win this one. They completely outplayed us. We just had a bad game tonight. You play 82 games in a season and that happens sometimes." Howard on on Robinson: "He scored at will, with dunks and short jumpers. He had it going tonight." Howard: "David was big, he was key, he was unstoppable. We tried to find other ways to stop him but he really had it going. He was finishing strong and hitting the outside jumpers." Calvin Booth: "We made it real easy for him. I don't know how many dunks he had, but that was a direct reflection of how the centers and the big guys [for Dallas] played defensively. He got a lot of easy baskets. I think most of his points came on us losing him. So I don't feel like this is one of my best games." Dallas led 25-23 after 1. Shawn Marion had 15 points. Phoenix opened the 2nd with a 10-2 run to go up 33-27 with 8:30 remaining. Phoenix pushed their lead up to 52-41 with 2:20 left and led 58-48 at the half. Tony Delk had 13 points in the 2nd quarter. Marion had 22 points and Juwan Howard had 16 points in the half. Phoenix led 64-54 with 7:30 to go and Dallas slowly cut their lead down to 69-71 as Michael Finley hit a 3-pointer with 3 minutes left. Phoenix led 76-73 after 3. Finley had 12 points in the quarter. Phoenix led 78-75 with 11:30 remaining and went on a 21-8 run to go up 99-83 with 4:30 to go. Phoenix led 103-88 with 3:15 remaining, but the game wasn't quite over as Dallas went on a 13-2 run, including 11 points by Steve Nash, to pull within 101-105 with 47 seconds left. Clifford Robinson made a layup and was fouled with 35 seconds left. He missed the free throw, though. Finley pulled up and drained the long 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining and Phoenix's lead was only 3 points. Dallas quickly fouled Jason Kidd and he hit 2 free throws. Howard was fouled with 17 seconds left and he made both free throws. Phoenix led 109-106 and could not get the ball inbounds. They called timeout and still couldn't get it inbounds. They called timeout again and moved the ball to halfcourt and the inbounder, Mario Elie, moved before getting the ball inbounds and it was a turnover. Dallas called timeout. The ball came in to Nash and he faked as the defender went by and shot the 3-pointer which bounced off of the front of the rim. Tony Delk got the rebound and was fouled with 2 seconds left. Phoenix won 111-106. Shawn Marion was a monster in this game and the Mavs could do nothing to stop him. This was a game where not having Greg Buckner _really_ hurt. I don't think Marion would have had 38 points including 16-23 FG if Buckner was guarding him. Marion also had 11 rebounds. The Mavs were again hurt by rebounds - they simply weren't going after them. They only had 6 offensive rebounds and gave up 16 offensive rebounds to Phoenix - Dallas had 5 seconds chance points and Phoenix had 20. It was a valiant comeback in the 4th to nearly steal a win (a win they wouldn't have deserved), but it wouldn't have been necessary if they hadn't played so poorly in the 2nd quarter where Phoenix out-scored Dallas 35-23. Besides Marion's game, Tony Delk had a great game off the bench with 23 points. Rodney Rogers also contributed off the bench with 16 points (including a poor 5-19 FG) and 10 rebounds. Phoenix's bench out-scored Dallas' 39-8. Clifford Robinson had 15 points including 5-15 FG and Jason Kidd had a near triple-double with 9 points (including 2-9 FG), 12 rebounds, and 13 assists. Michael Finley led the way for Dallas with 34 points including 10-11 FT and 7 rebounds. 14 of Steve Nash's 18 points came in the 4th quarter. Juwan Howard had a nice offensive game with 23 points including 9-16 FG, but only had 5 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki chipped in a quiet 19 points and was the Mavs' only rebounder with 11 boards. Quotes Scott Skiles: "I was really pleased with the overall effort. Shawn was fantastic, Jason was good, and Rodney and Tony played well off the bench. It looked like we had a lot of energy. It looked like we intended to win the game." Skiles on Dallas' comeback: "We thought the game was over against a very dangerous team. They almost made us pay." Skiles: "I have been involved in a lot of crazy games, especially this year. The last few minutes were similar to the year we've had. Something good happened and we relaxed. We got sloppy and didn't match up." Shawn Marion: "It's just a matter of how the defenses are playing me. I'm getting better at recognizing. I'm a lot more patient now, seeing everything. I pick my moments right and it's helping." Rodney Rogers: "We knew they were going to come down and start shooting 3s and they were making them. They've been making them all year." Don Nelson: "It was a hard fought game and a tough loss for us. In the 2nd half we laid it all out there. We didn't leave it in the locker room. We gave it our best effort, and that's all we can ask for." Nelson: "What can you do? We did the best we could. It happens." Nelson on Marion: "He was unstoppable. We didn't have an answer for him. We played a couple of guys pretty well tonight but we just couldn't find him." Michael Finley: "I think if we were winning, nobody would say we were tired. We just don't seem to be playing with that sense of urgency that we had on that first road trip. I don't know if it's because we're comfortable that we're in the playoffs now, or if we're just waiting for the playoffs to start. But I think these next 4 games, we'll find something and we'll go into the playoffs on a positive note." Dirk Nowitzki: "San Antonio and Phoenix is a tough back-to-back. I don't know, defensively they killed us tonight. We couldn't stop them, and offensively we just aren't clicking. We are just playing bad right now." Steve Nash on his end-of-game 3-point attempt: "I got a good look at the basket. I thought I had a good shot." Nash: "I got a good look at it and it came up a bit short. I thought it had a good chance but I realized it was short. It was straight on." Nash: "They got a lot of hustle plays. We hustled like heck in the 2nd half, but a lot of the bounces didn't go our way." Nash: "We've just got to get back to the basis, play better defense, rebound better and be sharper offensively. We're not doing any of those things particularly well." Juwan Howard: "There's no excuse for our performance tonight. There's a lot of improvement to be made on my part and on everyone else as a team, and that comes with playing better defense, going out there and rebounding the basketball, going out there with that fight and intensity and playing hard from start to finish." Howard: "The reason that we couldn't get the job done is because we just let them outhustle us. Coach came in here and he challenged us, and of course we came out with a little bit more energy in the 2nd half. But still, it shouldn't get to a point where Coach has to come out and challenge you. That should be something that we should take on that challenge from day one." But the game stayed close as it was a tightly contested game with Dallas holding small leads in the 1st quarter. Dallas led 23-13 with 5:30 left and Sacramento scored the next 12 points to go up 25-23 with 3 minutes to go. Dallas answered with the next 5 points to go back up and led 32-29 after 1. Steve Nash had 10 points. Dallas led 42-38 with 6:30 remaining and went on a 10-2 run to push their lead up to 52-40 with 3:45 left. Sacramento responded with an 11-2 run to pull within 51-54 with 32 seconds to go. Steve Nash drove for a layup with 27 seconds left and Dallas led 56-51 at the half. The game stayed close in the 3rd with Dallas holding a 2 to 8 point lead the entire quarter. Dallas led 84-78 after 3. Finley had 11 points, Juwan Howard had 10 points, and Chris Webber had 10 points in the quarter. Dallas scored the first 5 points of the 4th quarter to push their lead up to 89-78 with 10:15 left. Dallas led 97-84 with 5:50 remaining and proceeded to go scoreless over the next 4 1/2 minutes and allowed Sacramento to get in back in the game with a 10-0 run and Dallas only led 97-94 with 2:15 left. The teams traded misses and Finley was fouled with 1:20 to go. He hit both free throws. The teams again traded misses and Bobby Jackson drained a tough 3-pointer over a defender to pull Sacramento within 97-99 with just 46 seconds remaining. Finley missed a jumper with 22 seconds left an Webber missed a jump hook with 6 seconds left, but Vlade Divac got the rebound and was fouled (Dallas had a foul to give, so it was Sacramento ball out of bounds). Predrag Stojakovic inbounded the ball to Webber who handed the ball back to Stojakovic and screened Stojakovic's defender and Stojakovic's 21-foot jumper missed. Calvin Booth got the rebound and was fouled. He hit both free throws for the final margin. Dallas won 101-97. What a great, entertaining game! Who says the league needs to make rule changes to improve the game - teams just need to play the game the way these two teams did. This was a very tense, playoff-like (yes, I do remember what a playoff game is like :) ) game. Dallas did have a slight advantage in that Sacramento played a tough, overtime game the night before (which they won), but Dallas also played a very tight rotation of only 7 players and Michael Finley played all 48 minutes and Juwan Howard played 47 minutes. Finley was Dallas' high man with 31 points, but Howard deserves a lot of praise. He once again did a good defensive job on Chris Webber and the two basically canceled each other out. Howard had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Webber had 24 points and 13 rebounds. Shawn Bradley was a monster on the boards with 15 and swatted 5 shots to go with his 8 points. Calvin Booth also had 5 blocks. Steve Nash had a quiet 14 points and 5 assists and Dirk Nowitzki was almost non-existent with 13 points including 5-15 FG and 6 rebounds. Webber led the way for Sacramento and Predrag Stojakovic chipped in 18 points and 8 rebounds, but missed the most important shot. Even with all the calls they missed (both ways), I had to feel somewhat sorry for the refs. I don't think I've ever seen as much whining going on in a game by the players and the coaches (both teams). It looked like every time down the court someone was complaining about something. I did get a laugh early in the game. Vlade Divac was called for illegal defense and once the whistle blew, he started complaining to the ref about it. He had one foot in the paint while he argued and was paying no attention to the ball or the player he was defending. So, the Mavs inbounded the ball while Divac was complaining the ref immediately called another illegal defense on Divac. With the win, Dallas reached 50 wins for only the 3rd time in team history (86-87 had 55 wins and 87-88 had 53 wins). Dallas also snapped their 3 game losing streak and with only 3 games remaining, 3 games is the longest losing streak of the season. That's tied for second lowest longest losing streak in team history - 2 was the longest in 86-87 and 3 was the longest in 84-85. Quotes Don Nelson: "I just think it was a marvelous win for us and it was the 50th. We broke a losing streak against a really good team. I just can't say enough about the performance of the guys that had the opportunity to play in this game." Nelson: "I saw 50 wins here, but not this season. It's developed quicker than I thought and I guess quicker than anyone thought. [50 wins] is the mark of a really good team. It always has been. Doing it in the West says a little more." Nelson: "If those are playoff-type games, good grief, what a physical game." Nelson: "Great effort from Shawn Bradley tonight. He was quite a factor and got beat up most of the night. It isn't fair, but that's the way it went." Michael Finley: "We learned our lesson with those 3 losses. The passive teams don't win." Finley: "We just wanted to be the aggressor. Down the stretch and going into the playoffs, the aggressor is going to win. During the 3 game losing streak, we were passive." Dirk Nowitzki: "That is what we're trying to do, get the 5th spot. Then we would probably end up playing Utah. We just have to keep fighting for that 5th spot, and that probably means 3 more wins." Steve Nash: "I think we had something to prove to ourselves. We want to win these last few games going into the playoffs and put the momentum and confidence back in our pocket." Nash: "50 wins is a nice milestone for us, but it is somewhat irrelevant if we go out in the first round of the playoffs. We definitely have our sights set on more. Hopefully, these last 3 games we can go out and play as well as we did tonight and go into the playoffs with some momentum." Juwan Howard: "Great victory, we needed this. We've been on a 3 game slide and to beat a great team like Sacramento gives you a good feeling going into a tough road trip." Howard: "We were focused. Mike set the tone and we fed off his energy." Rick Adelman on what made the difference in the game: "I don't know. I don't know. I'm a little bit upset. I'm not going to waste my time on it. It's as simple as that. They played well. They beat us. They're going to be a good playoff team. That's all you're getting from me." Chris Webber complaining about the officiating: "The games are too big right now. We're trying to win a damn division. And we have all these fouls." Chris Webber: "We just fell short tonight." Webber: "It's not time for fatigue now. There only 5 games left. If anybody says that [that they are fatigued], they're not professional. I'm out there hurting in both ankles. It's crazy pain right now but that's just the way it is. You can't take me off the court. When I was little, I was watching Magic Johnson playing Game 7. Now I'm trying to get to the playoffs and be in a high position. You don't have time to be hurt or tired." Predrag Stojakovic on his last miss: "I got a good look. It just didn't fall in." Vlade Divac: "All night, they were illegal. And the referees called me for being illegal back-to-back early so I cannot drop down into the lane." Doug Christie: "We can't look in our rear-view mirror and try to focus on what LA is doing. We control our destiny. We can't look at the letdown, we have to look at how we're going to fight back from it."
