Before Saturday's game, Dallas activated Walt Williams and placed Evan Eschmeyer on IR with a sore right knee. Michael Finley still remains on IR, but the team is hopeful that he will be able to play in tonight's game vs Seattle. Dallas has just 2 games left in the regular season. Dallas (57-21) at Utah (46-35) (April 11) The game stayed close in the 1st quarter as there were 9 lead changes and neither team led by more than 3 points until Karl Malone hit a jumper with 2:10 left to put Utah up 22-17. Utah led 24-19 after 1. Malone and Dirk Nowitzki had 11 points each. Utah was ice cold to open the 2nd quarter and Dallas took advantage by going on a 15-2 run to go up 32-26 with 6:50 left. After missing their first 8 shots of the quarter, Utah finally got a bucket when Malone hit a jumper with 5:50 to go. Dallas clung to a low single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. 2 free throws by Malone with 22 seconds remaining tied the game at 45-45 at the half. Neither team shot all that well as Dallas shot 44% FG (but shot 6-8 3-pointers) and Utah shot 42% FG, but Utah was getting some massive homecooking (but not taking full advantage of it) as that Jazz shot 14-21 FT while Dallas shot just 7-8 FT. Neither team was able to mount a run during the 3rd quarter and Utah mostly held small leads, but none larger than 5 points. Utah led 68-66 after 3. Raef LaFrentz had 11 points in the quarter. Utah led 71-68 with 10:50 left and Dallas used a 5-1 mini-run, capped by a 3-pointer by Steve Nash, to go up briefly 73-72 with 8:40 remaining. Malone scored the next 4 points to give Utah the lead back, but Nowitzki hit 2 free throws and a 3-pointer to give Dallas a 78-76 lead with 6:45 left. Andrei Kirilenko scored the next 4 points on dunks and Calbert Cheaney hit a jumper to give Utah a 4 point lead. LaFrentz drained a 3-pointer to pull Dallas within 81-82 with 5 minutes left, but Utah scored the next 7 points, capped by an offensive rebound and layup by Kirilenko, to give Utah an 89-81 lead with 2:40 to go. Utah took the largest lead of the game at 92-83 with 1:37 remaining, but the game wasn't quite over as the Jazz still struggled to shoot free throws. Nowitzki hit 2 free throws, Utah missed on 2 shot attempts, and Nash was fouled on the rebound. Nash hit both free throws with 30 seconds left and Dallas quickly fouled Matt Harpring. He only hit 1 of 2 free throws. Nash got the quick 2 to pull Dallas within 89-93 with 25 seconds to go. Stockton was fouled and _he_ (career 82.6% FT) only hit 1 of 2 free throws. Dallas missed with 22 seconds left, but Harpring missed 2 free throws. Nowitzki drained the 3-pointer with 8 seconds left and Kirilenko went to the line. Instead of sealing the game, he only hit 1 of 2 free throws and the Jazz led by 3 points with 2.6 seconds left. Dallas called timeout and moved the ball to halfcourt. The ball was inbounded to Nick Van Exel with Kirilenko guarding him and as Van Exel went dribbling trying to get away from the defense the ball bounced off Van Exel's foot for the turnover. Utah won 95-92. Dallas still did not look great in this game, but did look _much_ better than they did in the Phoenix game and did not look lethargic like they did in that game. I was surprised that they had a shot to tie the game at the end, but they should have had a much better play than what they ran - the ball should have got into the hands of Steve Nash or Dirk Nowitzki, not Nick Van Exel, who wasn't having a good game. The big stat in this game was free throws. Utah shot 24 more free throws than Dallas. Granted, the Jazz did try to give back some of that huge advantage in missing 17 free throws (more than Dallas attempted) - if they had hit just 75% of their free throws, the game wouldn't have been close. Utah shot 21-38 FT and Dallas shot 13-14 FT. Even if you take out the 6 free throws attempted off of intentional fouls in the last minute of the game, the free throw difference is still far too large and should not happen. [I though Dallas it it rough until I saw the box from the SA-Sea game where San Antonio shot 36-49 FT and Seattle shot 13-17 FT.] Utah upped their field goal shooting in the 2nd half and finished shooting 50% (36-72) FG including 2-7 3-pointers. Dallas shot 43.4% (33-76) FG including 13-24 3-pointers. The Jazz out-rebounded Dallas 44-29 including 10-5 offensive rebounds (if you shot less than 45% FG, you need to have more than 5 offensive boards). Karl Malone was the high man for Utah with 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists. But the key player was Andre Kirilenko, who had 11 points in the 4th quarter including the key offensive rebound and putback. He finished with 19 points and 6 rebounds. John Stockton had 17 points including 7-9 FG and 6 assists. Matt Harpring had 15 points but shot just 6-11 FT. Calbert Cheaney was the 5th Jazz in double-digits with 11 points. Greg Ostertag had 6 points and 13 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki led the way for Dallas with 34 points including 4-6 3-pointers and 10-10 FT and 8 rebounds. Steve Nash also had a double-double with 19 points and 10 assists, but also committed 5 turnovers. Raef LaFrentz continued his string of good performances with 21 points on 9-14 FG and 3-6 3-pointers and 4 rebounds. No other Mav was in double-digits. Nick Van Exel had 8 points on 3-9 FG and just 2 assists. Quotes Jerry Sloan: "I thought we had some minutes where we played very well. They are a tough team for us to try and guard to keep them from getting on top of the basket." Sloan: "We got a little casual and cool, you might say, to finish the ball game." Sloan on Kirilenko: "He executed the offense. He shot the ball when he got it. That was a wonderful thing about him to be able to finish that way. Whatever it takes, we have to do a better job to try and get him to be a better player. That is my responsibility." John Stockton: "It's a good win. They are a very good team, as everybody knows. We need victories like that." Stockton on Kirilenko: "He executed very well. Sometimes, Andrei with all of his excitement, gets running around a little bit. But I thought he stayed in our stuff and that really enables him to make big plays for us down the stretch." Andrei Kirilenko on the offensive rebound and layup: "You know I was just in the right spot at the right time. I try to do what I can." Matt Harpring: "The playoffs are a whole different story. But you want to be playing well going into the playoffs." Don Nelson: "We competed tonight. I was really happy and proud of the guys. They gave it everything they had and I have nothing but accolades for the guys in that room. Not everyone played great, but they all played hard. We gave ourselves a chance to win." Nelson: "When you have to overcome 38 free throws to 14, it's difficult, but not impossible." Nelson on Dallas' final play: "Anybody that's on the floor is an option and Raja Bell saw that Kirilenko fell down and thought that maybe Nick would have an open shot. Everybody on the floor has an opportunity to catch and make the game winner." Dirk Nowitzki: "We played a little better; we made some shots, but the rebounding was awful. That's disappointing." Nowitzki on Kirilenko: "He's so long. He's an amazing offensive rebounder and if you don't put a body on him after a shot goes up, he's going to find a way to get to the glass and get his long arms on it. He made some special plays down the stretch. He's a special player." Steve Nash: "We still have a ways to go. We have to sharpen things up." Raef LaFrentz: "It was a tough road trip. We played 3 good teams and 3 teams that are playing better than we are right now. We're not playing that great, but we'll get around in time for playoffs." Van Exel, who had the game winning shot against Utah earlier: "I guess lightning could have struck twice in the same place, but it didn't. It was my fault for not telling Raja that Kirilenko was on me coming out of the timeout. It's real tough to shoot over that guy because he's so long." Raja Bell: "It's tough because it's the 3rd loss in a row. I think we played hard and competed, and that's a positive. The last time [against Phoenix], we didn't. But it always sucks to lose 3 in a row." Bell on is inbounds pass to Van Exel: "I thought Nick would be wide-open in the corner, but Kirilenko just slipped, he didn't fall. In hindsight, I probably should have gotten the ball to Steve." And with both teams being offensive oriented clubs, a high scoring affair was expected - and they didn't disappoint. Despite both teams having had played the night before (and it being the 4th game in 5 nights for Dallas), the teams came out with energy and hustle. Dallas scored the first 6 points of the game before the Warriors got on track. Dallas held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter and took their largest led of the quarter at 33-23 with 1:35 left. Golden State scored the last 3 points of the quarter and Dallas led 33-26 after 1. Dirk Nowitzki and Raef LaFrentz had 9 points each and Antawn Jamison had 12 points. Dallas shot 48% FG and Golden State shot just 38% FG. Dallas led 37-30 with 11 minutes to go and Golden State went on a 15-4 run to go up 45-41 with 7:15 remaining. Dallas scored 6 straight points to retake the lead at 53-49 with 4:50 left and the Mavs held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. A 3-pointer by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 6 point lead, but Jamison nailed a long baseliner at the quarter buzzer. Dallas led 62-58 at the half. Dallas was still shooting 48% FG, but the Warriors upped their shooting to 44% FG for the half. Jamison had 20 points and Nowitzki had 18 points. Golden State pulled within 1 point but in less than a minute Dallas' lead was up to 9 points at 72-63 with 9 minutes remaining as the Mavs drained consecutive 3-pointers and got a layup. A 3-pointer by LaFrentz gave Dallas an 86-72 lead with 3 minutes to go. Golden State scored the last 5 points of the quarter to pull within 80-89 after 3. Nash had 13 points in the 3rd quarter. Golden State did not have a run in them for most of the 4th quarter and Dallas' lead stayed in double-digits most of the quarter. A jumper by Jason Richardson pulled Golden State within 97-107 with 4:40 to go, but Dallas scored the next 6 points to take their largest lead at 113-97 with 3:30 left. The Warriors scored the next 9 points to pull within 113-106 with 1:20 to go. The teams traded misses and Nash hit 2 free throws with 43 seconds left to seal the win. Dallas won 117-108. It was a better performance than the team has been having lately, but they still couldn't quite put the Warriors away and let them hang around longer than they should have. For a big change, the Mavs did benefit from some home cooking in this game as the calls seemed to lean towards Dallas (not to the extent that they were towards Utah in the last game and I don't think it cost the Warriors the game). Dallas shot 32-34 FT and Golden State shot 16-23 FT. Dallas shot 44.3% (39-88) FG and Golden State shot 44% (44-110) FG. Golden State did out-rebounded Dallas (53-48), but it was just a difference of 5 boards. It was the 17 straight win for Dallas against Golden State. The win upped Dallas' season total to 58 wins - a team record for wins in a season (won 57 last season, won 55 in 86-87). Dallas won every game they played on Saturday this season (16 games). Dallas road Dirk Nowitzki to the finish in this game as he had 12 points in the 4th quarter. Golden State could not stop him and he finished with 37 points including 14-15 FT, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. Steve Nash played well and had 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 10 assists. Nick Van Exel had 17 points, but shot just 5-14 FG, but also had 7 assists. Raef LaFrentz played well with 12 points and 7 rebounds and Shawn Bradley made an appearance with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Antawn Jamison led the way for the Warriors with 25 points - but only 5 came in the 2nd half. He also had 11 rebounds. Jason Richardson had 17 points and 5 rebounds. Rookie Mike Dunleavy had a career best 17 points including 6-9 FG and 5 rebounds. Erick Dampier had 11 points and 8 rebounds and Bob Sura had 12 points. Gilbert Arenas had a terrible night with just 5 points including 2-7 FG, but did have 8 assists. With only 2 games left in the regular season, it is looking strongly like Dallas will have the #3 seed and face the Lakers in the first round. The Mavs do still have a slight chance at the #1 seed (which will face Phoenix in the 1st round), but Dallas has to win tonight, the Spurs have to lose tonight at Utah, and Dallas has to win Wednesday in San Antonio [San Antonio holds the 2nd-tie breaker (conference record) - any Dallas loss or Spurs win give the Spurs the #1 seed]. For the #6 spot (which the #3 seed faces), it is a tight contested where Minnesota (50-31), Portland (49-31), and the Lakers (48-32) are fighting for the #4 and #5 spots. Minnesota has at Memphis on Wednesday left. Portland has vs Phoenix on Tuesday and at the LA Clippers on Wednesday left. The Lakers have vs Denver on Tuesday and at Golden State on Wednesday left. The only way for the Lakers to not get the #6 seed is: 1) if Minnesota beats Memphis, the Lakers win both games and Portland losses both games (Portland holds the tie breaker) 2) if Minnesota losses to Memphis, the Lakers win both games to tie Minnesota _and_ they have a different record than Portland [Portland wins both games or losses both games] (the Lakers would then hold the tie breaker over Minnesota (conference record), but the Lakers lose the 3-team tie breaker (record amongst the 3 teams)). Quotes Don Nelson on 58 wins: "It's another franchise record for us. In a year in which I think wins were a lot harder to come by because of the strength of the West. Even the teams, like the Golden State Warriors who weren't very good a year ago, become really good teams and it is not easy to beat any of them. We felt fortunate to win this game, I thought it would be a tough game and it was. We couldn't seem to sustain our lead and when it was time to knock them out, we committed a turnover or were a little sloppy or something. On the other hand, we made some big plays down on the other end and found a way." Nelson: "This was a lot harder game than the people who read about it in the paper will realize. Golden State is an outstanding team, 2nd in the league in scoring with just a lot of really good players. I feel fortunate to break the losing streak at 3 and get back with a winning way for a franchise record. I think it is commendable to the Warriors. A lot of people think that we are better than we really are, but it's one of the best achieving teams I have ever coached. In 25 years, I've never had a team that has done better with the talent we have. I am so proud of them to get the all-time record here with 58 wins and counting. I had to play Dirk, Steve, and Nick more minutes than I wanted to, but that was really the only way I thought I could sustain our lead and win the game. I thought it was important enough to break that losing streak." Nelson on Nowitzki and Nash: "It's kind of a tough situation to be in because I don't want to lose a bunch of games before the playoffs, but I don't want to burn up the guys that need some rest. It was important to break the streak. I didn't want it to go to 4. We have 2 games left and I am just going to play them by ear. If it is lopsided either way, I will probably take those guys out and if we have a chance to win, then they will have to play a little bit more. I think that is the best way. The only thing that is important right now is to get Mike back and get him some games under his belt, see where he is, and to see if he can participate in the playoffs at a high level. The critical test in the next couple of games is to see where Mike is." Nelson on LaFrentz and Bradley: "I don't want to put any undue pressure on anybody, but if they don't play in the playoffs, and I mean at a high level, both those guys have to come through for us if we are to go anywhere. It's really that simple. Raef has been playing really well for the past 4 games now and I would love to have him keep on that level all the way up through the playoffs. Shawn went completely asleep on this last road trip, but responded well today and we will take it whenever we get it. We certainly needed the support of both of those guys tonight." Dirk Nowitzki: "Our energy hasn't been there and we've been struggling, so this is a big win for us. We haven't played well in a month. We haven't competed at a high level, and that's what the playoffs are all about." Nowitzki on Bradley and LaFrentz starting: "I think the big lineup really worked well. We rebounded with them and they are a very good rebounding team so that was nice." Nowitzki on Arenas' flagrant: "He was trying to go for the ball and missed. He hit me in the face, but it's not bad." Steve Nash: "We didn't play great tonight again, I don't think. We played well enough and we did a lot of good things and we did a lot of good things last night as well. I think we are heading back in the right direction. It was important for us to stop this quickly because we need as much time as we can to go forward for the playoffs and to have a little momentum and have as much positive energy as possible." Nash on Dallas having beaten Golden State 17 straight times: "Well, the Lakers have beaten us 20-something times at their place so I don't know how to explain this stuff. This is a good team we played tonight. They are capable of pretty much beating any team in the league and it was a good enough performance to get a win. I don't know we've won so many in a row against them." Nash on 58 wins: "I guess that's an accomplishment, but it doesn't feel great the way it happened. With our expectations, it's no big deal. If they made a trophy for the winner of the regular season, something like this would mean something more." Nash on 58 wins: "Sure, it's an accomplishment, but it's kind of anticlimactic. It's a little disappointing the way we're playing." Nash on if he needs rest: "I feel great and it's give and take. You want to go into the playoffs fresh and you also want to go into it with a rhythm, so it is really up to the coaches." Nash on the standings: "It's tough. It is a tough time of the year for everyone to focus. We've been battling for so long and it looks like we've come up short. Tonight was one of those games where you have to dig deep, motivate yourself and look at the big picture rather than tonight's game. I think that our team is tough enough mentally that we are going to bounce back and we are going to be fine." Raef LaFrentz: "You want to stop the bad flow as soon as possible. We had dropped 3 straight and we definitely didn't want it to be a 4th. We came out tonight with a focused effort and we were able to win a game we should have won." Eduardo Najera: "They are definitely better this year and they are fighting and playing tough against us. We got it done tonight. We had a really bad taste in our mouth. It feels good to win again and hopefully we will keep going." Najera: "We are trying to get some rhythm and trying to play better. Especially since the playoffs are coming up soon, we are just trying to stay positive and I think we are doing a good job. On Monday, it will be another tough game against Seattle, but hopefully we will play better." Eric Musselman on Jamison only having 5 points in the 2nd half: "It wasn't anything that we change. I think playing back-to-back nights and getting in at what time we did and he still had 25 for the game and 11 rebounds. He had a double-double and played a very good game." Musselman on the back-to-back: "I'm sure everybody was really tired. Our bags got to our rooms at almost 5 am, but our guys still played pretty well. Especially when you look and we did everything statistically well except shoot free throws." Musselman on the officiating: "It was pretty evident where the ballgame was won. Especially when you look at this and see that we did everything well except for free throws made and free throws attempted. They took 2 more 3-pointers than us and yet got to the line twice as much." Antawn Jamison on getting in so late: "I don't think that is an excuse because they pretty much had to do the same thing. They probably got in about an hour before we did and I don't think many of those guys live in downtown Dallas anyway. To me that's a cop out. This is our job and it's late into the season and we should know how to prepare ourselves for these types of situations, but it was difficult to get in at 4 am. It's our job is to get as much rest as we can and get prepared for the game." Jamison: "A couple calls didn't go our way, but that's part of the game. You have to be able to fight through those situations. We went through a stretch in the 4th quarter where we couldn't throw it in the ocean. They really hurt us and a team like Dallas plays so well at home." Jamison: "We played these guys well all year. It's just the little things here and there that beat us." Jamison on shooting 2-8 FG in the 2nd half: "I had the same looks, but they just didn't go in. It wasn't anything Dallas did to me. A couple calls didn't go our way and there were a couple of stretches when we couldn't throw it in the ocean." Mike Dunleavy on the 2nd quarter: "The bench came in and played with a lot of energy and we shot almost 80% when we were in there. Dallas had all of their big guns out at the time and we were able to make a little run. They took control of the game in the 3rd quarter and we were unable to gain control again." Dunleavy: "We're 2 of the top 3 scoring teams in the league. We know both teams were going to get a lot of open looks and a lot of points being put up on the board. We tried to clamp down and play a little defense, but obviously it wasn't good enough tonight." Bob Sura: "Our games are pretty wild every night. They're like this: up and down, quick shots, some turnovers, and not a lot of defense."
