Playoff tickets go on sale at 11 am Saturday. If Dallas wins tonight night, then the tickets available will be for games 1 and 2 of the Western Conference Semi-finals. If Dallas losses tonight night, then the tickets available will be for game 7 on Sunday. Schedule: If Portland-Dallas goes to game 7, it will be played in Dallas on Sunday at 2:30 pm on ABC. If Dallas wins tonight, game 1 of the Dallas-Sacramento series will be played in Dallas on Sunday at 7:30 pm on TNT or (only if the other 2 series also end tonight) at 2:30 pm on ABC [Dallas gets home court due to having a better record, despite Sacramento having a higher seed]. Game 5: Portland at Dallas (April 30) Despite lots of talk of Portland having another player out (Ruben Patterson with the flu), Portland ended up with almost a full roster as only Derek Anderson (out for the series) was unavailable. The 1st quarter started out the way most of the 1st quarters in this series has: ugly. Okay, the 1st minute was pretty as Dallas twice ran plays where Michael Finley got a layup and a dunk [why they never went back to this, not even once, is beyond me], but after that, the teams mostly threw up bricks (after Finley's dunk, the teams combined to miss their next 8 shots). Dallas led 9-6 with 7:15 remaining and scored the next 6 points to take their largest lead at 15-6 with 4:25 to go. They couldn't get the lead larger than that and led 21-15 after 1. Finley had 13 points in the quarter. Dallas shot 7-21 FG and Portland shot 6-21 FG. A layup by Ruben Patterson pulled Portland within 22-23 with 10:20 left, but Dallas scored the next 8 points to go up 31-22 with 7:30 remaining and Dallas' lead fluctuated between 6 and 10 points for the next 6 minutes. Dallas led 45-35 with 2:40 to go and Portland scored the next 6 points to pull within 41-45 with 1:20 left. Nick Van Exel stole the ball and Nowitzki got the dunk on the break with 3 seconds remaining. Dallas led 50-43 at the half. Van Exel had 12 points in the 2nd quarter. For the half, Dallas shot 45.7% FG and Portland shot 37.5% FG, but Portland out-rebounded Dallas 27-17. Dallas continued to hold small leads, none larger than 7 points, during the 3rd quarter as neither team had a strong offensive run. Portland scored 6 straight points to pull within 57-58 with 7:20 to go and the teams traded 2 points for the next few minutes. A 3-pointer by Bonzi Wells tied the game at 66-66 with 4:10 left. Dallas scored the next 3 points and then Portland scored the next 3 points to again tie the game. Dallas scored the next 6 points to go up 75-69 with a minute remaining. Dallas led 77-71 after 3. Damon Stoudamire had 13 points during the quarter. A 3-pointer by Van Exel gave Dallas a 90-81 lead with 7:25 to go. Dallas led 92-83 with 6:10 left and Scottie Pippen (who missed the last 4 games with knee problems) drained a 3-pointer. Nowitzki hit a jumper, the teams traded possessions, Pippen got a break-away dunk, Dallas missed, and Rasheed Wallace nailed a 3-pointer to pull Portland within 91-94 with 4 minutes to go and we had an exciting finish on our hands. Nowitzki hit 2 free throws, but Wells hit another 3-pointer for Portland to cut Dallas' lead down to just 96-94 with 3:25 remaining. The teams traded misses and then the teams traded buckets and there was 2:20 left. Dallas missed on 2 attempts. Portland missed, but the ball went out of bounds off of Dallas. Wallace missed from the corner, but the rebound went right back at him and he again jacked the 3-pointer up and nailed it to give Portland their 1st lead of the game at 99-98 with 1:06 left. Nowitzki drove across the paint and dished the ball underneath to Eduardo Najera and as he went up for the layup, 2 Blazers collapsed on him and Patterson got the block with a minute to go. Zach Randolph was fouled shooting with 39 seconds left and hit both free throws to give Portland a 3 point lead and Dallas used their last timeout. Nowitzki was fouled 7 seconds later, but he missed the 1st free throw, but hit the 2nd and Portland led 101-99 with 32 scores remaining. Dallas did not intentionally foul and Wells missed a shot with 10 seconds left, but Arvydas Sabonis was right under the basket and got his hand up to tip in the miss (his only points of the game) to clinch the win. Dallas missed with a second left and Portland won 103-99. Not only did it come down to rebounding and defense, which Dallas is usually lacking in, but Dallas was also unable to execute down the stretch. Dallas closed the game shooting just 1-8 FG and their only point in the last 2:30 of the game came from a free throw (and there was also a missed free throw). Portland closed the game with a 9-1 run to steal the win. The game wouldn't have come down to that if Dallas had just been able to put the game away earlier, but they never did produce the back-breaking run and left the door open, which Portland walked right through with the help of shooting 4-6 3-pointers in the 4th quarter - and that's after they only shot 3-19 3-pointers through 3 quarters. And if Dallas had gotten just one of the 2 defensive rebounds prior to Rasheed Wallace's 3-pointer, they might have been able to hang on to the win. But that is a lot of ifs and the team just didn't perform down the stretch. Portland now has confidence and hope while Dallas has doubts and needs to re-group. The team is still up 3-2 and needs just 1 more win to end the series, but they are going to need to rebound and execute better (defend better is too much to hope for) to put Portland away. Game 6 is tonight in Portland at 9:30 pm. We'll see which Dallas team and which Portland team shows up. For the numbers, Portland shot 45.3% (39-86) FG including 7-25 3-pointers and Dallas shot 49.3% (36-73) FG including 3-11 3-pointers (and 1-5 3-pointers in the 4th). Portland got 13 more FG attempts due in part to out-rebounding Dallas 48-32 including 20 offensive rebounds. Portland shot 18-23 FT and Dallas shot 24-29 FT. Portland got control of their 1st half turnover problem and just had 4 turnovers in the 2nd half to finish with 16 turnovers for the game. Dallas was at about their average with 11 turnovers. Scottie Pippen came back from injury and played the entire 4th quarter to give his team a needed boost. He's numbers won't catch your eye, but those who saw the game know that he had a strong affect on the game. Pippen had 9 points on 4-6 FG and 5 assists in 16 minutes. Zach Randolph had his 2nd good game with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Bonzi Wells again struggled with 15 points including 5-22 FG (1-9 in the 1st half), but contributed in other ways with 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Damon Stoudamire had a strong 3rd quarter (but didn't play much in the 4th due to Pippen) and finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds [8 rebounds from a 5-10 guard??? Come on Mavs!!!!] in 28 minutes. Rasheed Wallace struggled throughout the game with his shot and foul trouble and finished with 14 points including 5-14 FG and just 4 rebounds before fouling out in 33 minutes. Of course, he did have the tide-turning 3-pointer to give Portland the lead. Dale Davis had 10 points and 8 rebounds and Ruben Patterson had 9 points. Dirk Nowitzki continued his string of strong performances and again played all 48 minutes - and that's even though he suffered a shoulder injury where he got wacked on the arm that sent it flying inward in a motion the arm is not meant to do [and there wasn't even a fouled called, unbelievable] (it was similar to what Karl Malone twice did to him a couple of years ago, except this wasn't intentional). He finished with a game high 35 points on 12-20 FG (no 3-pointers attempted) and 11-12 FT and 11 rebounds (and no assists). He got help from Nick Van Exel and that was about it. Van Exel had 25 points and 5 assists. Michael Finley had a really strong 1st quarter and the team went completely away from him the rest of the game. He had 15 points for the game, but only 2 points on 1-2 FG after the 1st quarter. No other Mav was in double-digits. Steve Nash again had nothing with 7 points including 2-11 FG - most of his shots were short and one of his credited makes was actually also going to bounce off the front of the rim, but one of the Blazers tried to block it and Nash got the bucket off the goaltend. Nash did have 11 assists. Raef LaFrentz and Shawn Bradley were part of the rebounding woes as they couldn't grab on to the ball or box out to prevent Portland from getting to the boards. LaFrentz had 3 points and 4 rebounds in 33 minutes and Bradley had 6 points and 5 rebounds in 31 minutes - that's not enough production from those 2 with heavy minutes. Eduardo Najera had 8 points and 5 rebounds - 4 offensive - in 30 minutes. That's all the Mavs who played as Don Nelson went with a tight 7-man rotation. The officiating was very poor and inconsistent. [No where near as bad as Game 2, though, but bad enough that it has to be pointed out.] Quotes Maurice Cheeks: "It was just a heck of a ball game by Dallas and by us. We got some big performances down the stretch in the 4th quarter. I thought early on in the game we just could score the ball. They were scoring and our defense just couldn't get any stops. And we just hung in there, we hung around and hung around. And as the game started unfolding, we started to get some stops. That was really the key. We had guys out there who could switch the pick-and-rolls and it didn't allow them to get some open looks. We had Scottie play big, Rasheed played big, Bonzi, we had a lot of good performances out there and I haven't even looked at the stats sheet. But more importantly than anything on the offensive end was just our ability to defend the pick-and-roll, had guys out there who could switch it and that didn't allow them to get a lot of open shots." Cheeks on rebounding: "It's big for us in the series because when we can rebound the ball, when we get stops, we can rebound the ball, we can get some transition buckets and get some screen-and-rolls out there. But everyone that comes out there is starting to rebound the ball. We get rebounds from our guards. We get rebounds from our bigs. That's really the difference right now is that we've been able to rebound the ball, but more importantly, we've been getting stops on the defensive end because this is a good offensive team. And when we can get some stops from them - like Nowitzki, we didn't give him a lot of open looks, we didn't give Nash a lot of open looks, and Finley started the game scoring extremely well, but after that we kind of clamped down on that as well. But more importantly, our interior defense has been very good. It was very good tonight." Cheeks on momentum: "Dallas still has a 3-2 lead. Although we're very excited about tonight, we came in here and won a game. They certainly have the capabilities to come in our building and win a game. They did it in the 3rd game. I think we have to go back, get our emotions in check, and come back and be ready to play, because this is a very good basketball team. They're not going to lay down. They're professionals, so they're not going to just - the 6th game is not going to be an easy game for us. We know that. We know that we've got to come in and play he way we played the last couple of nights." Cheeks: "I didn't even look at the stats right now. I'm not a guy that looks at the stats, so with those things [poor 1st half performances] being a part of it, we still won the game. So, to me I try not to look at the stats. I try not to look at it as fouling [??not sure of this word] and rebounds and someone having more turnovers and Rasheed having a bad 1st half. I try not to look at that. I look at the over all game. The over all game was that our defense was pretty good for the most part. At the end of the 1st half, we have the chance to go down 2 or 3 and they get a break away layup. That's our ability not to control the last second of the 1st half and then they get a layup. So pretty much our defense had been pretty good the whole game with the exception of a few plays. And our turnovers led to a lot of their baskets any way. If we can cut down on our turnovers, we should be in good shape." Cheeks on staying in the game during the 4th: "I think they went up by 9 at some point and really had the chance to blow it open. We kept making some shots - I think Scottie made a shot, Bonzi made a shot - and we continued to just hang in there. Each time we made a shot, each time we got a stop, it gave us a little bit of hope, gave us a little bit of hope, and we just hung in there. I think, as the gentleman said over there, we are still on the brink of elimination, but each time is what we talked about before the game was to just give ourselves a chance to win the game. And even when we got down 9, we still didn't give up, we just hung in there on the defensive end. Because our defense had been pretty good the whole night." Cheeks on Pippen: "I didn't know how much I was going to use Scottie, but his impact was big as far as I'm concerned, because Van Exel was hurting us and when we put Scottie in - we had Ruben on the floor, we had Bonzi on the floor - we had guys who could switch the pick-and-roll and had guys who could stay in front of Van Exel, who is a very good offensive player. So when we inserted Scottie in the game, particularly in the 2nd half, he had the ability to switch off Dirk and switch off Van Exel and switch off Nash and those guys, and we kept them in front of us and [his] coming into the game, his ability to guard any of those 3 or 4 of those guys on the floor made our defense very effective." Rasheed Wallace: "We just hooping. Bottom line, that's all we can say. We just hooping. Y'all and a bunch of other people do the talking. We just got to go out here and keep doing what we're doing." Wallace: "We're just hooping it up, nothing else. Y'all wrote us off. We're the only cats that believe. We're going to keep doing what we're doing." Wallace: "We was playing hard. That's what the hell we was doing. It was just shooting. It was a big shot. Just shooting." Scottie Pippen on when he decided to play: "I kind of decided this morning during shoot around. Yesterday, I got into practice and did a little running for about 15, 20 minutes and just wanted to see if that was going to irritate my leg any. And obviously it felt good and I came in this morning feeling even better. I decided to play this morning and get myself ready." Pippen: "I felt I was an impact. I think that the fact that my presence of being there, giving my team some confidence to go out and knowing that we have another guy that's ready to give it a push, it was important for us. I think give us another dimension for us defensively of being able to play some of the plays aggressively, the way that we wanted to. Just trying to be a leader out there, to do what ever I can to keep this series alive." Pippen on his breakaway: "I felt good. I figured Nash was going to catch me, but obviously he didn't catch me. I felt good. I felt good enough that I knew when I was going to play tonight that I was going to lay it on the line. And that's what I did." Pippen: "I think that the style of play that we play is what's going to help us win this series. And that's being aggressive and taking the ball to the basket. Unfortunately, we don't have the shooters that they have and we're not going to try to out-score them. We're going to play good, hard-nose defense and if it takes us being a little more aggressive offensively as well as defensively to win this series, then that's what we've got to do. I don't think we've changed our style of play. Maurice is still coaching us the same way. We're just trying to encourage each other to keep pushing it." Pippen on facing the zone: "I wouldn't exactly say we're comfortable, but we are starting to get a better feel for ti. When you don't see a team like we do Dallas 4 times during the season, it's tough to regularly figure them out. It took us some games this series to figure them out, even though we feel like we've been in every game and had an opportunity to really win the games, we just are starting to get a better feel for them as a team and as individuals." Pippen on Wallace's last 3-pointer: "'Sheed is our go to guy. No matter how he shot the ball, we always believe in him making his next shot. He's a guy that he wants the ball and if he chose to take that shot, then as his teammates, we're going to follow him. If he misses that shot, then it's probably not a good shot, but he made it and it was a great shot and we're going to live with that." Pippen on if Dallas is on the run: "Well, I won't exactly say that. I feel like that we got some momentum right now. We've been able to stretch this series out the way that we wanted to. And now we have an opportunity to go back home and defend our own home court and push this series to the limit. And right now we have a lot of confidence that we can do that." Pippen on defense on Nash: "I felt that we've played him great. We've let Nash get loose and given the fact that he's an all-star, he's going to make some shots. But we're going to do what ever we can to try to get the ball out of his hands, but we're not going to leave shooters and allow him to have a way around the game. We're going to force him to make shots." Pippen on any special treatment for his knee: "No, I haven't. My treatment has basically just been ice and rest. I've been in the pool, trying to keep the blood flowing, but pretty much just been resting." Pippen on not playing much until the 4th: "That was Maurice's call, and that's what I indicated to him this morning was to go ahead and coach the game and continue to work with what's been working for you. He called upon me when he felt like I was needed. And the 1st half, I felt like I was a little cold. I didn't really settle myself down. The 2nd half, I felt a lot better. I felt like I was in control of the game, in control of the tempo a lot better." Pippen: "I did all right for an old man. I'm keeping it live." Bonzi Wells: "When I'm not hitting my shots, I just try to get everybody else involved. If I'm hitting or not, I'm still going to try to get the open man the ball and rebound the ball and try to play good defense." Wells on Pippen: "Just to have him on the court, his presence, his leadership, everything he brings to the table. Some people say he might have hurt us in Game 1, but we need him out there because he's a veteran." Wells: "We're trying, but we've got Game 6 to worry about. We've gone through a lot this year. A lot of things have been written about us, a lot of things have been said, but ... winning heals a lot of wounds. Hopefully if we continue to win, everybody will start to love us, maybe." Zach Randolph: "We just played hard, left everything on the court. Dallas is tough team. So Friday is going to be another tough game, so we have to go back and prepare for them again." Randolph on game 6: "It's going to be tough, but we've got our confidence up and we're playing. I know the fans are going to be ready." Damon Stoudamire on Wallace's 3-pointer: "That's a normal shot for him. That's what he takes. The ball came back to him and he knocked that down. We got a break. We haven't gotten breaks all year, but we got a break tonight." Stoudamire: "It was a great win. We feel like we've made it a series. Before this, it wasn't. We're going home with a lot of momentum." Stoudamire: "I never doubted that we could come back, but we're not back yet. We've got to win 1 more game in Portland ... and that's the only game we need to concentrate on right now." Stoudamire: "Every game in this series has come down to the 4th quarter and who was going to control the 4th quarter. Tonight, they controlled the beginning, but we controlled the end." Dale Davis: "It was a total team effort. Tonight, the difference was the defense. Dallas did a good job of really coming at us, and they were pretty aggressive throughout the game, but when we had to get stops, we got them." Don Nelson: "Tonight we lost a hard fought game. Again, the rebounds and the size differential was a tough part of our game, to get out-rebounded consistently trying to go with the big lineup and they still out-rebounded us. I thought they played a sensational game. I thought we were pretty good. Had balanced scoring. All their starting 5 had a nice balanced attack. Had a couple of guys off the bench with 9 [points]. We couldn't seem to get everybody shooting the ball when we really needed to. And they really clamped us down down the stretch. They were able to score and shut us down, and that was really the difference. I thought Scottie Pippen was a big factor in the game, even though he just played limited minutes. He was able to guard and his length has always given us problems. And now we've got a series. This is going to be a hard fought series - it already has been, I suppose. They're gaining momentum and we've got to find a way to match that momentum. I thought we really battled hard today, but we weren't crisp enough in the 4th quarter and I think you have to credit their defense, their size, and their athletism gave us problems, there is no question about it." Nelson: I've never not been concerned, even when we were up 3-0, I never said it was over or anything like that. I have a lot of respect for this team and their athletism and length have always given us problems. I thought the 4th game there was an opportunity that we should have taken advantage of, and when we didn't take advantage of that, I could see that Pippen was eventually going to play in the series and it would even be tougher. So they are doing what they needed to and they are playing real well at this point. And we got to match it, that's all. I don't know where else to go." Nelson: "When Nash gets banged up, his shot seems to go. I'd say he's a little nicked up; everybody is probably. Dirk's nicked up now - quite a physical game they put on him. They're more athletic and more physical than we are, we knew that going into the series. We thought we did some other things well enough, and we have, but not able to win the last 2 games, we'll see. We'll definitely need better production out of everybody." Nelson on if they need for the big 3 to step forward: "I think they're stepping forward. I thought Mike had a great start. It's just the size. Normally I've gotten by with playing Mike at a small forward, but he has trouble guarding their small forward and their inside people. I'm going to have to probably take a good look at that. We thought our best team in this series would be our big team. But when our big players - LaFrentz gets 4 rebounds in 33 minutes, Bradley gets 5 in 31 - it's not that they're not trying, they're not getting rebounds - Eddie Najera gets 30 minutes, 5 rebounds. We have to do better there, that's all. We just have to do better." Nelson on Nowitzki: "He's pretty banged up right now. We'll see what tomorrow brings. I'm not going to work them tomorrow very much. But he's young and can take the minutes at this point in his career, I would say." Dirk Nowitzki on not getting the rebound before Wallace's 3-pointer "I should have secured it, but I didn't and that was a big turnaround for us. Defensive rebounding has been key for us the whole year and if we get pounded on the glass, we usually lose. They really weren't shooting the ball that well, but they had a lot of 2nd chance opportunities and that's what kept them in the game." Nowitzki: "It's a tough series, but we're still up 3-2 and it's no time to panic now. We've won 1 up there in Portland and that's what we'll try to do again. Hopefully we can find a way to steal another one." Nowitzki: "Offensively we're fine. We almost scored 100 points and that should be enough to win the ball game. We couldn't get a stop the last couple minutes of the game. Pippen made some big shots off the bench and whenever they missed, they got it right back and scored." Nowitzki: "We just couldn't get a stop. We just couldn't find a way to guard them in the last couple of minutes. That's where you win games." Nowitzki: "My left shoulder popped a little bit. It's happened to me before. It'll be a little sore. But no big deal. I'll be ready Friday, for sure." Steve Nash: "We have to get back to playing confidently, like we did in the 1st 3 games. We're still a good team and we're still up 3-2." Nash on his poor game: "I'm just going to stay confident and not let this get me down. It's what I worked hard all summer for, to be in this situation. For it to be going so poorly at this point isn't enough to make me quit." Nash: "It doesn't feel good not to make shots. I just think positive and it'll come back." Nash: "To an extent, I want to be smart. I don't want to completely shoot us out of it if I can't get it going. But at the same time I'm going to stay aggressive and try to score." Nick Van Exel: "Now they're dangerous." Van Exel: "They got a big rebound and made a big shot. Rasheed's a pretty good shooter. If you give him 2 good looks, he's going to make 1 of them. Each one of these games you let go is an opportunity lost. It gives them more confidence. We're still confident, but we won't read what you guys write about us now." Van Exel: "We didn't make shots in the 4th quarter and they buckled down. We didn't get a rebound and they got a rebound. We just didn't execute. They denied what we wanted to do." Van Exel: "I'm sure they're confident going home. But I'm still upbeat and I still like our chances. But the momentum has definitely shifted." Van Exel on his 1-6 FG 4th quarter: "[The first 3 quarters] didn't really matter. The bottom line, I didn't shoot well in the 4th quarter. We didn't get the plays we needed in the 4th quarter, and they got a big win." Van Exel on if Nash's hip is bothering him: "You never know with Steve. Steve may be injured, but Steve is not going to be the type of guy who complains. What we've got to do as a team is rally around him. We've just got to pull him up." Eduardo Najera on Portland getting 20 offensive rebounds: "That's their strength and unfortunately that's our weakness. They're taking advantage of that and doing a lot of good things. We've got to play and rebound better if we want to win the series." Najera on if the pressure is on Dallas: "No, not at all. There's no pressure, it's just a ballgame. We just have to go up there and play Mavericks basketball and we'll get it done." Najera on shooting poorly: "Yeah, that's our strength and we didn't shoot very well from the 3 tonight. If we would have shot better from 3 their defense would have really opened up. We just need to play better next game."
