The NBA fined Don Nelson $7,500 for criticizing the refs. Nelson questioned how the refs would treat Danny Fortson following Fortson's flagrant foul and said that the refs still treat Eduardo Najera different as a result of Najera's inadvertent bump of a ref last season. Dirk Nowitzki still remains inactive with his sprained right ankle. With the 3 day break between Saturday's game and Wednesday's game, Nowitzki hopes to return to action for the 2 game trip to LA. LA Lakers at Dallas (December 4) Dallas' shooting remained MIA and it was 2 1/2 minutes before the Mavs finally got on the board. The Lakers took advantage of Dallas' dismal start and shot out to an 18-4 lead with 6:25 remaining. The Lakers took their largest lead of the quarter at 25-8 with 3:35 left and Dallas tried to play catch up the rest of the game. Dallas did close the quarter with a 7-2 run. The Lakers led 31-20 after 1. The Lakers shot 52.4% FG and 9-10 FT while Dallas only shot 32% FG and 3-4 FT. In addition, the Lakers out rebounded Dallas 17-8 - and had started off with a 10-1 advantage. Shaquille O'Neal had 12 points and 6 rebounds. The Lakers' lead stayed in the low teens early in the 2nd quarter. The Lakers led 42-30 with 7 minutes to go and Dallas went on a 9-2 run, with 7 points by Steve Nash, to pull within 39-44 with 4:30 left. Things got really ugly as neither could buy a shot as Dallas went 0-8 FG (and 1-2 FT) and the Lakers went 0-4 FG (and 2-4 FT) over the next 3 1/2 minutes. The Lakers made 2 buckets over the last minute of the game and Dallas didn't connect for a basket until Nash drove for 2 as the quarter ended. The Lakers led 51-42 at the half. Nash had 14 points in the 2nd quarter - he shot 4-6 FG and his teammates shot a mere 1-16 FG in the quarter. Dallas shot a mere 27.7% FG for the half - and it wasn't as if they were missing tough shots, a lot of open looks were clanking. Michael Finley finally hit a shot to open the 3rd quarter - he was 0-9 FG in the 1st half. But the Mavs bricklaying then continued (shot 1-11 FG over the next 5 minutes) and the Lakers scored the next 7 points to go up 58-44 with 11 minutes left. The Lakers joined in with their own piece of ugliness when Karl Malone swung his elbows after a rebound and hit Steve Nash on the mouth. Nash had to leave the game and get 2 stitches for his bloody lip (but did return 5 minutes later) and the poor officiating continued as the refs ignored the rule book, which states the a player who throws an elbow that connects above the shoulders is automatically ejected, and did not toss Malone. The Lakers led 60-50 with 8 minutes remaining and scored the next 7 points to go up 67-50 with 6:40 to go. Don Nelson was ejected during the run with comments to the ref when Kobe Bryant stepped out of bounds and wasn't called (Nelson got his first T at the end of the 2nd quarter for saying, "Call the foul! Call the foul, you a*hole!"). The Lakers held a double-digit lead for the rest of the quarter. Dallas did not fold, though, and scored the last 5 points of the quarter. The Lakers led 82-72 after 3. Bryant had 15 points and Finley had 10 points in the 3rd quarter. Repeating myself, Dallas pathetic shooting resumed to open the 4th quarter and the Lakers went on an 11-2 run to go up 93-74 with 7:30 remaining as Dallas shot just 1-7 FG. The Lakers led 102-86 with 3:30 left and Dallas scored the next 8 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Nash, to pull within 94-102 with 2:35 remaining. Dallas started playing hack-a-Shaq, but O'Neal hit both free throws. Dallas missed on 2 attempts, but got the rebound from both misses and Antoine Walker got the layup with 2:06 left. The ref was really slow with the whistle and let a couple of seconds go by before calling the intentional foul Dallas was committing on O'Neal with 2 minutes on the dot left. Of course, you can't hack-a-player away from the ball with 2 minutes or less remaining - doing so results in 1 free throw with any player on the court shooting it and retention of the ball. Bryant hit the free throw and then Malone got a layup and was fouled. He hit the extra and Antawn Jamison turned the ball over. Devean George drained a 3-pointer to seal the win at 111-96 with 1:22 left. The Lakers won 114-103. Well that was a dismal performance by Dallas against the current best team in the league. You have to hit at least 40% FG if you are going to even have a chance beat the top teams in the league. And it wasn't as if it was the Lakers stellar defense that was killing the Mavs - they were just missing shots. There was one sequence where Antawn Jamison got a rebound and then missed 3 layup attempts before the Lakers finally ended the misery and grabbed the rebound. The only positive from this game is that Dallas never did fold and it felt the entire game that the Mavs were just one strong shooting run from making it a real game. But that never occurred. Dallas shot 37.4% (37-99) FG and the Lakers shot 44.2% (38-86) FG. The Lakers had a nice advantage at the line in shooting 31-40 FT and Dallas shot 20-24 FT. The Mavs did pick up their rebounding a little after their dismal [word of the game] rebounding start, but the Lakers still finished with a huge 58-45 advantage. Dallas only had 16 assists. It was Dallas' first home loss of the season after winning the first 10 (the 4th longest Mavs home winning streak). Though not the offensive force that he usually is against Dallas, Shaquille O'Neal was still dominant. He was just shy of a 20-20 with 25 points including 9-14 FT and 19 rebounds. He also had 5 assists and 3 blocks. Kobe Bryant found his game in the 2nd half - he shot 3-11 FG in the 1st half and had 20 points in the 2nd. He finished with 32 points including 12-12 FT and 6 rebounds. Gary Payton had 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists. Karl Malone was fairly quiet (besides his elbow) with 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. The league did suspended him for 1 game for the thrown elbow, but he still contends that he did nothing wrong and would do it again. No other Laker was in double-digits. Derek Fisher had 9 points and Devean George had 8 points including 2-9 FG and 5 rebounds. Only Steve Nash and Antoine Walker shot 50% or better. Take those 2 out and the rest of the team shot just 28.6% FG. Nash had 30 points - 13 of which came in the 4th quarter - including 4-4 3-pointers and 8 assists. Not only did he have to get 2 stitches for his split lip, but Malone's elbow also pushed a tooth back and Nash had to undergo oral surgery to have a wire inserted to bond the tooth to another tooth and the wire will have to be there for 6 weeks. Walker had 24 points and 12 rebounds. Michael Finley finally found some sort of shot in the 2nd half where he had 18 points including 8-15 FG - but he only had 1 point and shot 0-9 FG in the 1st half. And unlike he normally does when he struggles shooting, he didn't pick up other aspects of his game as he only had 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Antawn Jamison had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, but only shot 4-13 FG. Josh Howard also couldn't shoot with 9 points on 4-12 FG, but went aggressively after the rebounds and snagged 14 before fouling out with 2 minutes left in the game. Dallas mostly went without a true or fake center as Danny Fortson played just 4 minutes, Shawn Bradley played 7 minutes, and Eduardo Najera played 15 minutes (and the 3 combined for just 2 points and 2 rebounds). The officiating in this game was absolutely dismal and I hope the refs got fined for their pathetic performance. And it wasn't that they were just missing things, they needed a refresher on the rules. Besides not tossing Malone for the thrown elbow, they had one of the crazier defensive 3 seconds called. Malone was in the paint and Jamison was on the block near Malone, but some how they called defensive 3 seconds on Malone. A big "pfffft" to Joe Forte, Tony Brothers, and Kevin Fehr for not doing their job to the best of their abilities. Now, don't get me wrong - I'm not blaming the refs for Dallas' loss, just pointing out that they were pathetic. Yeah the Lakers seemed to benefit from the majority of bad calls (Finley gets fouled twice on one possession with the ref looking on with no call???), but the team that couldn't shot straight needs to look in the mirror for this loss. Quotes Phil Jackson: "We felt like we were in control the whole game. We had an idea of what we wanted to do and they executed it well. Dallas is a team that comes at you in surges. They had many surges during the game, 3 or 4. They came right back at us and kept the game in the process of never being over until the very end." Jackson on O'Neal: "He knows against Dallas he's going to be challenged with screen-roll, that's part of their game policy and they're going to keep matching lower and lower in size until he's got to guard against 3-point shots. Ultimately, he ended up playing Antawn Jamison at some point in that 4th quarter." Shaquille O'Neal: "Don Nelson is notorious trying to make teams match up against what he is going to do. They have a lot of shooters. At first, their shots weren't falling and our shots were falling. Whenever you've got guys 7-6 that don't want to play, you take it inside." O'Neal: "We match up against this team very well. Teams are going to have problems matching up with us. Guys were really looking for me early. I was taking my high percentage shots and we got off to a hot start. We always get pumped up for the big teams and we know that these are games that we need to win. I proud of the guys that they played well." O'Neal: "The key to the winning streak would be balance and movement. The scoring is balanced. On any given night, anyone could be the leading scorer. Everybody's playing with a lot of energy right now." Kobe Bryant: "I haven't seen Shaq this active on the defensive end. He's making it difficult to get to the basket. He's taking defense as more of a challenge. He really seems to enjoy it." Karl Malone: "I don't think we're talking about statements. We're talking about winning ball games. I don't know if it's that easy, but guys are doing the things to put us in a position to win games. Now we look back on those 3 games we lost and wish we could have those over." Malone on the elbow that hit Nash: "I turn like this all the time." [Which the league declared illegal a few years ago.] [note: Don Nelson usually does not address the media in games he has been ejected.] Donn Nelson: "It was a tough night for us tonight. We fought hard, but we didn't fight smart all the time and we didn't play our best basketball. With the new faces, this is a project that is continuing to develop. We were hoping to have all cylinders clicking tonight and beat the likes of the Lakers, but it wasn't to be. We feel that as the season goes on this team will become better and stronger and get to know each other more on the court." Nelson: "For us to be ready at this point to beat that kind of firepower was too much to ask. They've got 2 of the most dominant players in the league and our most dominant guy was in street clothes." Nelson: "There were situations where the decision making could have been better. I think that was partially because of fatigue. We went with a 6 man rotation in the 2nd half. Danny was off on his rhythm tonight and Tony's still getting back from his injury and we were missing Dirk." Nelson: "We had to throw some different guys on Shaq tonight and Eddie fought his heart out. He was exhausted doing battle and locking horns with the likes of Shaq really takes it out of you." Nelson on Howard: "He was athletic and rebounded and ran the court. He gives us some punch at the 2-3 spot that we don't have. His ability to rebound the basketball is desperately needed on this team. We had to play him quite a bit and he made mistakes and missed assignments and that catches up to you. When you are playing young guys, it comes and in the process there are growing pains and we are going through them right now." Michael Finley: "We had opportunities early, but we didn't make our shots. The effort was there. I thought we kept it competitive." Antawn Jamison: "Offensively, we just couldn't put it in the ocean. To shoot as bad as we did in the 1st half and only be down 9 points speaks for itself. When you are playing a team like the Lakers, you really have to be quick to the ball. Because of what we did offensively, we put ourselves in a bind. You just can't come out offensively like that. It's hard to play. The more solid defense you provide, you can at least put them on their heels. We really dug ourselves a hole." Jamison on the Lakers: "Those guys are the ones that really like to come back and win. When you are down against the experience that those guys have - from Gary Payton to Shaquille, Kobe, and Karl Malone. Those guys have a lot of experience as far as when they get a lead, they get you down and put a foot on your throat. It was difficult, but it is still early in the season. We have to learn from what mistakes were made." Josh Howard: "We came and fought hard at home and tried to pick it up at the end. Things didn't go right and we didn't finish the game. I think every guy on this team knows how to step up and I think all of us can do it. We just have to come out and play hard." Howard: "We are an NBA team so no matter what kind of hole we dig ourselves, we should be able to dig ourselves back out. When situations happen like that, we just have to continue to fight hard in order to win." Howard: "They're a great team. But we're a great team, too. We just lost our focus." Howard: "They came out and fought harder. We tried to pick it up at the end. I don't know why it was like that. Situations happen. We didn't come out like we should have. Next time I think we have to come out and don't take them lightly." Dallas jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with 10 minutes to go, but their lead would get no larger than 5 points in the quarter. Dallas led 18-13 with 6:40 left and Orlando scored the next 7 points to take their first lead of the game at 20-18 with 5:15 remaining. The game was either tied or one of the teams held a 2 point lead over the rest of the quarter. Drew Gooden hit 2 free throws in the last second of the quarter to tie the game at 32-32. Dallas finally snapped their cold shooting streak and shot 59% FG in the quarter while Orlando shot 43% FG (Orlando shot 11-11 FT to make up the shooting difference). Juwan Howard had 13 points. The game remained tight over the first 4 minutes of the 2nd quarter. Orlando led 41-40 with 8 minutes left and Dallas rattled off the next 13 points to go up 53-41 with 4 minutes remaining as Orlando missed 5 shots and committed 4 turnovers. Dallas led 62-51 with 40 seconds left and got lax over the last minute as Tracy McGrady drained a 3-pointer and Tyronn Lue got a jumper at the quarter buzzer to close the quarter. Dallas led 62-56 at the half. Dallas was doing it inside as they out-scored Orlando 38-18 in the paint. Antoine Walker had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the half. A 3-pointer by McGrady pulled Orlando within 63-64 with 10:40 to go, but Michael Finley answered with a 3-pointer and Dallas maintained a small lead. 8 straight points by the Mavs gave Dallas an 81-69 lead with 5:40 left. Orlando was not able to rally the rest of the quarter (nor was Dallas able to pull away) and the Mavs led 89-76 after 3. The 4th quarter found Dallas mostly hanging on to a low teen lead. McGrady nailed a 3-pointer to pull Orlando within 92-101, Dallas turned the ball over, but McGrady missed and Finley hit a 3 of his own. Lue hit a 3-pointer, but Jamison hit jumper and Orlando was unable to cut Dallas' lead down to single-digits again. Dallas won 110-97. Hey, a stunner - a game where Dallas shot well. The highest the Mavs shot in the previous 5 games was 42.3% FG. They shot a solid 52.3% (45-86) FG for this game, but only 5-14 3-pointers. Orlando should have stuck to shooting 3-pointers as they shot 8-12 behind the arc, but only 37.5% for 2-pointers [41.7% (35-84) overall]. Dallas also killed Orlando on the boards and in the paint. The Mavs out-rebounded Orlando 55-36 including 21-13 offensive (the 3rd game out of the last 4 where they had 20+ offensive boards). Dallas out-scored Orlando 64-34 in the paint. The only thing not going well for Dallas in this game, which also allowed Orlando to hang around, was that the Mavs committed a season high 21 turnovers. The Magic did fight hard and I never felt they were out of the game until the last few minutes, but they still collected their team record 19th straight loss. Orlando held a closed-door team meeting after the game. Antoine Walker was the high man for the Mavs with 24 points including 11-18 FG (but just 1-4 FT) and 16 rebounds. Michael Finley shot very well with 22 points including 9-12 FG and 3-4 3-pointers. Steve Nash didn't shoot much and had 9 points (4-9 FG) and 9 assists. All 3 each had 4 turnovers, though. Josh Howard got the starting nod and played like a rookie in the 1st quarter in taking some bad shots and not being in the flow of the game. He settled down later and finished with 13 points including just 4-12 FG, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks. Antawn Jamison gave his usual boast off the bench with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Danny Fortson started, but only played 9 minutes as he got in foul trouble and Orlando does not have a tall or physical lineup. He had 5 points and 4 rebounds. Eduardo Najera had 9 points and 8 rebounds including 5 offensive in 16 minutes. Travis Best had 6 points and 2 assists in 14 minutes and Marquis Daniels had 4 points and 2 rebounds in 9 minutes. Tony Delk played 12 minutes and Shawn Bradley played 5 minutes and neither scored. Despite scoring 27 points, Tracy McGrady did not have a superstar game. 9 of his points came in the 3rd quarter, where he did play well, but he was quiet in the 1st half with just 12 points. He shot 9-24 FG including 4-8 3-pointers and had 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Juwan Howard had 24 points including 10-10 FT and 10 rebounds. Tyronn Lue had 16 points and Rod Strickland was the 4th Magic player in double-digits with 10 points in 14 minutes. Gordan Giricek and Drew Gooden both had cold nights. Giricek had 8 points including 3-9 FG and 5 rebounds. Gooden had 6 points including 2-11 FG, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Quotes Don Nelson (from memory): "Well it was just another game of us shooting 50%. (pause, waiting for laughter) That was a joke, Garcia." Nelson: "I worry about these games because you know they are going to catch fire one game and start making a lot of shots and beat somebody. I just didn't want it to be us." Antoine Walker on Orlando's losing: "With them right now, it's just contagious. I think when things start going bad for them, they kind of just sulk a little bit, and when you lose 19 in a row that's what happens." Walker: "We were nervous about this game. We didn't want to go out there and take them for granted. They're dangerous. You know they're going to come out of it, but you don't want to be the team that loses to them." Walker: "Nobody wants to be the team that they come off the losing streak against." Antawn Jamison: "When you lose 18 games in a row, they're bound to get one, and we knew they wanted to get a victory. We weren't coming in thinking it was a guaranteed win." Jamison: "Walker did a good job getting points on the inside for us. The rookie [Howard] did a tremendous job. That's really our strength right now. When Dirk gets back, that really opens it up. We knew this was probably one of the dangerous teams to play, especially after a loss to the Lakers. I mean, you lose 18 games in a row, they're bound to get one." Josh Howard on the inside scoring: "We emphasize every game getting the ball inside. Tonight the paint was open and we took it down there every time and guys finished." Johnny Davis: "That's been the story for us so far this year. We are getting close and we've been competitive, but not enough to get it done down the stretch." Davis: "We couldn't sustain things. That's the way it's been going. We're competitive for the great part of the game and wind up on the bad end of it." Davis: "We are getting close and we've been competitive. Hopefully the next game will be the game that we do get it done. That is how we have to approach it." Davis on Dallas: "They just keep coming at you in waves." Juwan Howard: "It was a situation where we couldn't get over the hump. It's very frustrating. No one in this locker room ever thought we'd start the season like this." Howard: "We've just got to go out there and get that one victory and get that monkey off our back. I tell you, that monkey's heavy." Tyronn Lue on the team meeting: "Everybody spoke up. You could see where everybody was coming from. The main thing was that it seemed everybody has been focusing on offense and not playing defense."
