Dallas at Atlanta (February 9) Dallas played little defense to start and never really played much defense the rest of the way. Dallas held small leads early on and led 14-12 with 6:50 to go. Atlanta scored the next 8 points to go up 20-14 with 4:55 remaining. Theo Ratliff got a dunk as the quarter ended to give Atlanta a 36-29 lead after 1. Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 11 points and Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points. 36 points was the most points Atlanta had scored in a quarter this season. Atlanta shot 60% FG and Dallas shot 48% FG. The 2nd quarter was a quarter of runs and both team's shooting dropped off in the quarter. Atlanta led 38-31 with 11 minutes to go and Dallas scored the next 9 points to go up 40-38 with 9:30 left. Atlanta then scored the next 10 points to go up 48-40 with 6:35 remaining. Dallas then scored the next 9 points to go up 49-48 with 3:45 left. And Atlanta closed the quarter with a 6-1 run to go up 54-50 at the half. Atlanta shot 35% FG and Dallas shot 41% FG in the 2nd quarter. The teams continued to struggle with their shots in the 3rd quarter, but the game stayed close the enitre quarter. A 3-pointer by Antoine Walker gave Dallas a 69-65 lead with 2:15 to go. Dallas led 72-69 after 3. Both teams shot under 40% FG for the 3rd quarter. Atlanta scored the first 8 points of the 4th quarter to go up 77-72 with 11 minutes remaining. Atlanta continued to hold a single-digit lead and scored 5 straight points to go up 89-80 with 6 minutes left. Dallas got into the penalty with 6:30 remaining and the Hawks made a living at the line the rest of the game. Atlanta took their largest lead of the game at 96-86 with 1:20 to go. Dallas tried to make a last minute surge with a jumper by Steve Nash and 3-pointer by Michael Finley to pull Dallas within 91-96 with 54 seconds left. Stephen Jackson shot 1-2 free throws and Antoine Walker missed a 3-point attempt and Abdur-Rahim hit 2 free throws with 29 seconds left to give Atlanta an 8 point lead and Dallas did not have enough time left for another push. Atlanta won 102-96. Dallas came out lacking intensity and never found it as the game went on. Even against a poor team, you can not sleep walk to a win. Atlanta shot better, out-rebounded Dallas, and had more assists. Atlanta shot 46.3% (38-82) FG including 3-15 3-pointers and Dallas shot 42.1% (40-95) FG including 5-26 FG (and 2 of the makes came in the last minute of the game). Atlanta had a huge advantage at the line in shooting 23-33 FT (only 6 were from intentional fouls) while Dallas shot 11-16 FT. Atlanta shot 14-19 FT and Dallas shot 0-1 FT in the 4th quarter. Atlanta out-rebounded Dallas 50-48 and out-assisted Dallas 23-20. The Hawks did struggle in controlling the ball in committing 19 turnovers. It was Atlanta's first win vs Dallas in 9 games. But the big news of the night didn't come until 90 minutes after the game ended (and Dallas wished it came a number of hours earlier) when the Hawks announced that they had traded Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Theo Ratliff, and Dan Dickau to Portland for Rasheed Wallace and Wesley Person. Once again an opponent had a career high against the Mavs. Stephen Jackson had a career high 30 points on 10-18 FG and 8-10 FT. He had 17 points including 5-6 FG in the 4th quarter. In his last game as a Hawk, Shareef Abdur-Rahim had a nice outing with 27 points including 9-11 FT and 10 rebounds including 5 offensive. Jason Terry struggled with his shot but managed to score 14 points including 6-19 FG and 0-6 3-pointers. He also had 7 rebounds, 9 assists, and 4 steals. Rookie Boris Diaw had a season high 10 points and 6 rebounds. Theo Ratliff had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Finley was the high man for Dallas with 24 points including 9-23 FG and 4-9 3-pointers and 9 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki had 23 points and 10 rebounds. Antoine Walker had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Steve Nash had 14 points and 11 assists. Both had 5 turnovers each. Josh Howard had 9 points and 4 rebounds. The bench combined for just 12 points. Antawn Jamison again wasn't very productive with just 4 points and 3 rebounds in 22 minutes. The refs did a poor and inconsistent job in this game. Quotes [except where noted, from before the trade was announced] Terry Stotts: "I thought there was a little bit of a lull in the 2nd half. I told Jason to keep pushing the ball. That's what happened against Houston and I wanted us to keep pushing it and keep up the tempo. I thought everybody was out there committed to getting a win. There are always rough spots, but Shareef and JT played the entire 2nd half and Boris did a good job on Steve Nash and I thought everybody played pretty good." Stotts: "We were going to have practice tomorrow but they've earned that one off. We'll practice on Monday and Tuesday to get ready for New Jersey and getting our wind back and getting our legs back." Stotts on going 13-18 against teams with winning records: "We can't make up our record against teams under .500. I prefer to look at it as we're 8-7 [in our last 15]. 8-7 with some really quality wins. I'd rather look at that than the negative." Stotts on Jackson: "He's been playing pretty well for an extended period of time. I think he's taking better shots. I think his attitudes towards defense since the Sacramento game has been better, and when you're committed to defense it's makes the offense easier." Shareef Abdur-Rahim: "We just wanted to come out and finish this 1st half of the season off with a good win. Now we can go relax for a couple of days. Everybody played well tonight and everybody did their part. Everybody came out focused. Mentally it was a tough game because our All-Star break starts early. I thought we did a good job of staying focused." Abdur-Rahim: "We just focused, made plays, and finished the game off. I think against Houston we let up and they made a run on us and tonight we made it a point of staying focused." Abdur-Rahim on the trade: "I don't think it ever went the way I envisioned it. I wanted to help Atlanta have a winning team. That never materialized. That's something I don't feel good about." Jason Terry: "We came out and threw the 1st punch in the 4th quarter and then just kept swinging at them. That's what you have to do against a team like Dallas. They're not known for their defense so offensively you know you're to get good looks. We were the aggressor in the 4th." Terry: "We know we messed up the 1st half of the season, but we're going to put the behind us. We're going to come back refreshed with our clear minds and go forward." Stephen Jackson: "I knew I had to play well to get a win. I just want to come out and be a factor. It's easy to score on Dallas. They're a great team, but they're not a great defensive team." Jackson, a Texan: "Any time I play a Texas team, I've got to make them sing the blues." Jackson: "If I'm not mad, I'm not going to play well. If I'm happy, that means I'm going to have a terrible game. If I don't talk about nobody's momma or slap nobody before the game, I'm not ready." Don Nelson: "I don't have a whole lot to tell you. We just got our [tails] beat in about every facet of the game. It's a disappointing loss, but these things happen. I never thought that we were really in it mentally like we needed to be. I think it was clear from the 1st quarter on that we were lackadaisical again. But I consider them a good team; they've been playing very well. I didn't take this game lightly at all, even after a big emotional win at our place against Detroit. We seemed to let our guard down." Dirk Nowitzki: "They've been a tough team lately. We should have been better than that. We have to be more focused." Nowitzki on the 1st quarter: "I'm not a shot-blocker and they just took it right to the rim. All we could do is just hope they missed or foul. We should be better than that. It's just hard to win games like this when you don't guard them." Nowitzki on Jackson: "He's a good player, but we made him look like an All-Star." Michael Finley on the 1st quarter: "That's where the game was pretty much lost. They got whatever they wanted." Finley: "We knew they were going to come out and play hard against us. We were just like we were stuck in sand in the 1st quarter." Steve Nash: "We had a really poor 4th quarter. We had a 3 point lead going in and we gave up a 3-point play to start the quarter. We never got the momentum back. We were never good enough defensively, we gave up too many points. They got into the bonus really early, they're going to the line for rebounding fouls at their end. That was a horrible way to finish the game and a horrible loss for us." Nash: "It was a terrible 1st quarter, too, especially the start of the 1st quarter. I thought we weren't really ready to play, and that hurt us." Steve Nash: "I don't remember anything that we did sticking out as adequate or average. We were pretty poor all the way around." Antoine Walker: "We let the game get away from us. We had control of the game going into the 4th, but they came out more aggressive than us in the 4th quarter and it hurt us. We got down and got into a desperate situation where we had to take a lot of 3s to try to get back into the game and that's tough to do." Walker: "We had control of this game and we should have won this game. We had to make some jump shots tonight and we couldn't get any to fall late, and that's what really hurt us." Walker on the 1st quarter: "We gave them a lot of confidence offensively, but we got the defense together and they have a shot blocker in Theo, so when they clog the inside up, you've got to make some jump shots to get things loosened up on the inside." Walker on Atlanta being 4-1 against the Midwest division: "I think they have it in for our division." New York closed the quarter with a 14-3 run, capped by a jumper by Kurt Thomas near the quarter's end, to go up 27-21 after 1. Keith Van Horn had 10 points. New York shot 46% FG while Dallas only shot 35% FG. Dallas scored 7 straight points, capped by a 3-pointer by Michael Finley, to go up 33-31 with 7:40 left. Kurt Thomas was called for an offensive foul when he slapped Josh Howard's hand away hard and then was tossed when he had a small headbutt with Howard while the 2 were exchanging words (the game was tied 33-33 at the time). Dallas held a small lead the rest of the quarter and led 49-44 at the half. It was a defensive game as both teams were shooting 41% FG for the half. Dallas opened the 3rd quarter with an 8-2 run to go up 57-46 with 10 minutes remaining - 11 points was the largest lead of the quarter, though. New York went on a 10-2 run, that was sparked by a really pretty high arcing (to get over the out stretched arms of Dirk Nowitzki) 3-pointer by Stephon Marbury, to pull within 67-68 with 3:40. Dallas then scored the next 6 points. Dallas led 76-69 after 3. After a jumper by Marquis Daniels opened the 4th quarter and New York scored the next 7 points to pull within 76-78 with 8:40 left. Antoine Walker got a layup and Howard got a putback on his 2nd attempt to give Dallas an 87-80 lead with 6 minutes to go. The game stayed close and Van Horn and Marbury each got a layup to pull New York within 84-87 with 5 minutes remaining. Dallas then went on a 6-2 mini-rum to go up 94-86 with 4 minutes left. Marbury got a layup with 3:20 remaining and Dallas then scored the next 10 points, including a banked 3-pointer by Steve Nash to give Dallas a 12 point lead, to go up 104-88 with 35 seconds left. Dallas won 105-90. The final score is misleading as it was a close game until the end. Surprisingly, Dallas won this game with defense - the Mavs played good defense most of the game. Of course, it helped that New York was missing Allan Houston and Kurt Thomas got tossed midway through the 3rd quarter. Both teams played without a true center - Dallas went without a center in hopes that New York would keep Dikembe Mutombo out due to matchups and it worked as Mutombo did not play. Dallas shot 47.8% (43-90) FG including 5-17 3-pointers and New York shot 41.9% (36-86) FG including 5-13 3-pointers. Neither team shot free throws well as Dallas shot 14-21 FT and New York shot 13-19 FT. Dallas out-rebounded New York 51-48 and out-scored them 52-44 in the paint. The Mavs were very clean with the ball and only had 6 turnovers (Dallas is 8-0 this season when they have 8 or less turnovers). The loss snapped New York's 5 game winning streak. It is Dallas' the last game before the All-Star break. The Mavs' next game isn't until next Tuesday (at Memphis). Josh Howard will play in the Rookie Game Friday night and Dirk Nowitzki will play in the All-Star game Sunday. There is no question which player needs to be mentioned first for this game. Rookie Josh Howard was all over the place with his hustle, energy, and defense. He had 4 steals, 3 blocks, and 2 jumpballs. He frustrated Kurt Thomas enough to that Thomas did something stupid to get tossed. Howard also had a season high 17 points including 8-11 FG and 8 rebounds. He played so well that he got the nod for most of the 4th. Dirk Nowitzki was one of 3 Mavs with a double-double. He had 27 points and 12 rebounds. He had the crowd ohhing when he used the crossover while driving and then used it again a few minutes later (he was fouled both times) - not every day you see a 7-footer do that. Michael Finley had his second strong rebounding game (after a 6 game streak of poor rebounding) with 10 rebounds. He scored 25 points including 9-16 FG. Antoine Walker had 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks (tied career high). Steve Nash had 12 points (5 during the clinching run) and 8 assists. Dallas went with a short rotation as only Antawn Jamison, Travis Best, and Marquis Daniels came off the bench. Jamison had his 3rd consecutive quiet night with just 6 points and 6 rebounds in 23 minutes. Best didn't score (0-3 FG) in 13 minutes and Daniels had 4 points in 12 minutes. Stephon Marbury had some incredible shots that were just a joy to watch. He didn't really go off, though, and instead had an all-around game with 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 11 assists. 10 of Keith Van Horn's 20 points came in the 1st quarter. He also had 9 rebounds. Shandon Anderson had 19 points and Othella Harrington had 11 points and 13 rebounds. The NBA did not agree with Kurt Thomas' feeling that the headbutt was a minor thing and he shouldn't even have been ejected as today the league suspended him for 1 game for the headbutt. Thomas had 6 points and 4 rebounds in his 14 minutes. I was very surprised when DerMarr Johnson was subbed in with 3 minutes left in the game - he didn't do much and is on a 10-day contract (though it is nice to see him back in the league after his serious car accident in 2002). Quotes Don Nelson: "This will make it a nice vacation for everyone. This team should really enjoy their vacation. They've worked hard the last couple of months. I thought Kurt Thomas being ejected was a major point. He's been playing great. I was playing without a center, trying to keep Mutombo on the bench. I didn't want him to participate so we would have a better chance to get to the rim. We sure couldn't make a shot for a long time, so I guess it didn't matter if he was in the game or not." Nelson: "It was a slow start for us, but our defense was solid and carried us which is unlike us. We did catch fire in the 2nd half and start to make some shots. Overall it was a pretty good game - not perfect, but pretty solid effort on our part." Nelson: "When we were man-to-man we could switch the screen-and-rolls and that was effective. I thought we handled their screen-and-roll in the zone. Marbury is an incredible player. I love to watch him play. If he's not the best point guard in basketball, he soon will be. I really like his game." Nelson: "We are a team in the process of getting trying to get better and we are not there yet. I hope we will be at the end of the season. I see some strides and major steps in the right direction. I think we are a good basketball team. We play hard and we try to play together, but we have some obvious weaknesses that we have to overcome. I think we are working in the right direction." Nelson: "We are a team in the process of trying to get better, and we're not there yet. I hope we will be by the end of the season. I see some strides and some major steps in the right direction. To say we're an elite team, I can't say that. I think we're a good team." Dirk Nowitzki: "We broke their defense down a lot on the pick-and-roll. We were driving and kicking and getting everyone involved. If you didn't have a shot, we drove it again. That's our best offense." Nowitzki on Van Horn: "He killed us in the 1st half. We left him with wide open shots. I think in the 2nd half we did a better job of staying with him and forcing him into tougher shots." Nowitzki: "We should really be going into this break on a 5 game winning streak. That's why [the Atlanta loss] is a tough one. We were really disappointed we didn't play with any energy. I'm glad we answered that call and won." Michael Finley: "We stubbed our toe last night and didn't want it to continue." Finley on Marbury: "It was our defensive goal to keep him in check. He was coming off a big night and he always gives us trouble so we wanted to make his shots tough. We stepped it up." Finley on the rest of the season: "We're very optimistic. Ultimately, we feel like we're going to come together and end up on top." Steve Nash: "It feels great to at least get a win before we head off on the break. It was really frustrating to lose last night so anything to get that taste out of our mouth and it will be nice to have a few days off." Nash: "I thought maybe we were a little tired, maybe not quite as sharp as we would have liked to have been tonight, but after last nights game, I thought we showed a lot of toughness and no one wanted to lose." Nash on the rest of the season: "The biggest goal is to continue to improve, whether it be at home or on the road. We need to continue to grow offensively and defensively and be a team that can play well down the stretch of games whether we are on the road or at home." Antawn Jamison on the All-Star break: "Coach does a good job as far as keeping us fresh during the season, but just to get away and not have to worry about coming to practice and hearing that whistle blowing is going to be a sigh of relief for a couple of days. But we'll still have to get refocused and when it's time to come back be ready to go." Jamison: "We just need to really keep focused on a night in, night out basis. Defensively, we still need to grasp the system and what we're trying to do. Offensively, we really haven't had a problem all season so mentally we need to be tough night in and night out basically." Josh Howard: "We wish we could play defense like that all the time. It shows what we can do when we have our mind set on it." Howard: "We didn't want to go into the break with 2 losses in a row. Then we would have come back next week and it would have been on our minds." Howard on the headbutt: "He said a few cuss words, I said a few cuss words, then he headbutted me. I guess since I'm a rookie, he thought I was going to back down. But I wasn't going to back down from anybody." Howard on the headbutt: "I'm a rookie so I can't use my arms? That gives him the right to headbutt me?" Lenny Wilkens on losing Thomas: "I think that if we had Kurt it is a close game all the way. We needed him on the floor and if he is on the floor, who knows, I think it goes down to the wire. We had a good flow going. We were right there the whole time and I think it would have made a difference." Wilkens on not playing Mutombo: "That was my decision against their quickness. Had Bradley played, I would have put him in there. I felt that with the match ups, that we could bother them more with our quickness. They play the fringe so well that I wanted to go with a quick lineup. I mentioned to Dikembe that he is a super guy and if Bradley had come in the game or Scott Williams, he would have come in the game. They wanted to stay with their quickness and we had to match up with that." Stephon Marbury on losing Thomas: "Man, it was tough. He's a big part of our team. Whenever you lose a guy like him, it kind of messes everything up." Marbury on losing Thomas: "We had times when he could have made a play to get back in it. But when you lose a big part of your team it makes it extremely tough." Marbury on losing Thomas: "He's one of our top players. He's a big part to our team - rebounding, mental toughness, shooting. It was tough asking guys to come in and fill that role." Kurt Thomas on if he would have made a difference if he had not been ejected: "I think so. My teammates kept fighting, got back in the game, and cut the lead to 1. Then the Mavericks shot lights out down the stretch." Thomas on his ejection: "I'm just pissed off at myself for letting my teammates down and coaches by being thrown out of the game." Thomas on headbutting Howard: "I was pissed off about getting the offensive foul and what he was doing out there. I wasn't even thinking. It was a mistake I made by headbutting him and I shouldn't have done it." Thomas on Howard: "He was using his hands too much. And talking trash." Thomas on his ejection: "I should have gotten just one tech. I just felt I had to say something to Josh. I should have gotten a tech and moved on. But I barely touched him. I don't think he even reacted. But it's a mistake." Keith Van Horn: "They stuck to mostly zone and I struggled to find openings in it, especially moving from the 3 to 4. It was difficult to find openings and you have to give them credit for that." Van Horn on losing Thomas: "It changed our lineup and our lineup was already changed because of the way they started. They're one of the best teams in the NBA. You have to have a full cast." Shandon Anderson: "When you start winning, you get used to it. This loss tonight definitely hurt, but we don't have time for pity. We have a big game tomorrow that we want to win. We want to go into the break on a win. The 5 game streak is over, but we have to start another one." Anderson: "We had a lot of combinations out there trying to counter them. We lost Kurt and that was big. He's a key ingredient to this team. We were there and we fought back into the game, but they had too much at the end."
