Dallas activated DJ Mbenga and placed Marquis Daniels on IR with a sore left ankle prior to the San Antonio game on Friday. Dallas at San Antonio (January 14) Not only was Dallas facing the best home court team in the league (18-1), they were doing so short handed as in addition to Josh Howard missing his 2nd game due to an upper respiratory infection, the Mavs were without Erick Dampier due to a right knee contusion. Despite that, the game started with Dallas mostly holding small leads - none larger than 4 points. Dallas led 13-10 with 6 minutes to go and San Antonio went on a 9-2 run to go up 19-15 with 2:25 remaining. San Antonio led 21-19 after 1. Dallas tied the game twice in the 2nd quarter, but both times were unable to then take the lead. The game was tied 30-30 with 7:45 left and San Antonio rattled off the next 8 points to go up 40-31 with 5:10 to go. But that would be their largest lead as Dirk Nowitzki took over for Dallas. Nowitzki scored 12 of Dallas last 14 points of the quarter, capped by a running 40-foot 3-pointer that swished in at the quarter buzzer. San Antonio led 48-45 at the half. Nowitzki had 15 points including 6-9 FG and Tim Duncan had 10 points including 4-5 FG in the 2nd quarter. For the half, San Antonio shot 54% FG and Dallas shot 49% FG. The Spurs came out of halftime strong as a pair of 3-pointers surrounded a jumper by Jason Terry. A layup by Tony Parker gave San Antonio a 56-47 lead with 9 minutes left. The Spurs twice got their lead up to 10 points, but could get it no larger as Dallas continued to hang around. San Antonio led 74-66 after 3. Dallas only shot 33% FG while San Antonio shot 50% FG in the 3rd quarter - but Dallas did have 6 offensive rebounds. San Antonio scored the first 4 points of the 4th quarter and their lead hovered between 12 and 8 points over the next 6 minutes. San Antonio led 89-77 with 4:45 to go and Nowitzki again came alive for Dallas in carrying the team back into the game as he scored 7 points during an 11-2 run that pulled Dallas within 88-91 with 1:40 remaining. But the home cooking was on San Antonio's side as Bruce Bowen's layup attempt was clearly still on the rim when Duncan tapped it in, but the ref didn't make the call - Bowen was actually credited with the bucket. So instead of down by 3 with the basketball, Dallas was down down 5 with 1:20 left. Nowitzki hit a jumper, but Parker answered with a jumper and Dallas called timeout with 49 seconds to go - Dallas' last timeout. Terry drained the quick 3-pointer to pull Dallas within 93-95 with 43 seconds left. San Antonio ran the clock down and Manu Ginobili missed a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left, but Devin Brown came skying in to snag the offensive rebound and Dallas had to intentionally foul. Ginobili hit 2 free throws. Darrell Armstrong missed, but Dallas got the ball back out of bounds and Nowitzki hit the quick jumper with 2.7 seconds remaining. Ginobili was again intentionally fouled. He hit the first free throw, but missed the 2nd, but Nowitzki's full court heave was no where close to the basket. San Antonio won 98-95. It was a good game for a short handed team against the best, but the Mavs came up a tad short and that offensive rebound by Devin Brown hurt more than the missed offensive interference non-call. For the game, San Antonio shot 50% (38-76) FG including 5-13 3-pointers and Dallas shot 43% (37-86) FG including 6-17 3-pointers. San Antonio out-rebounded Dallas 46-36 including 12-11 offensive. San Antonio had 17 turnovers and Dallas only had 11 turnovers. But Dallas also only had 12 assists. The biggest difference was in the paint as Dallas missed their center. San Antonio out-scored Dallas 52-28 in the paint. San Antonio holds a 3-0 lead over Dallas this season, but Dallas has yet to face them at full strength (Michael Finley missed the first 2 games). For a change, it wasn't all Timmy. Tim Duncan did lead the way with 25 points including 10-17 FG and 6 rebounds, but he had help from Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, Bruce Bowen, and Rasho Nesterovic. Ginobili had 22 points and 5 rebounds. Parker was the only other Spur in double-digits with 12 points to go with his 9 assists. Bowen and Nesterovic helped on the boards. Bowen had 9 points and 8 rebounds and Nesterovic had 8 points and 12 rebounds. He also had 4 blocks. Devin Brown only played 15 minutes, but he was on the court at the end and snagged the key rebound - only his 2nd rebound of the game. He also had 9 points. Dirk Nowitzki was the man for Dallas as he played all but the last minute of the 1st quarter. He had a game high 36 points and 14 rebounds including 6 offensive. Jerry Stackhouse had 17 points in his 1st start of the season and played a season high 46 minutes. 8 of Michael Finley's 15 points came in the 1st quarter as he only shot 2-8 FG in the last 3 quarters. He also had 5 rebounds. Jason Terry had 13 points. The other 5 players that played combined for just 14 points and 6 rebounds. Quotes Gregg Popovich: "It was a good win against a good basketball team. That's always fun to do. I just wish someone had told me Nowitzki could shoot. That's what he does all the time. He's a great player, not just a great shooter, but a great player." Popovich on Nowitzki: "I just wish someone had told me Nowitzki could shoot. He knows it's going in and everybody is scared to death waiting to see when it would go." Popovich on Brown's rebound near the end: "That was a huge rebound for us at that time and Devin really played well in the time he was in there. I was pleased with the role he played tonight." Popovich on Dallas: "They got shooters all across the board out there and most of them are very good shooters. The game is never over with a team like that." Popovich on Nesterovic: "He did a great job for us, especially his ability to know where to be defensively. He did a good job on defense. We couldn't have done it without him." Tim Duncan: "They kept fighting throughout the game and kept coming back. Luckily we made some free throws down the stretch and got the win." Duncan: "Every game is huge for us. Especially against these guys since they are in our division. It really helps to have games like this where it is tight down the stretch." Duncan: "The way we played defense against them tonight is the same way we always play. We get out and contest shots and get in the other teams face." Duncan on shooting 7-9 FG in the 1st half: "It was nice to start the game knocking some shots down instead of the other way I've usually been starting. We've been moving the ball so well that the focus is not totally on me. So when I can get some open looks and knock them down, it helps a bunch." Duncan on Nowitzki: "We made him take tough shots down the stretch. Your best bet against him is to force him to take and make tough shots. We did a good job against him, but he still hit some big shots tonight." Duncan on Nowitzki: "We made him take some tough shots. Our defense is always the same. We contest shots." Duncan on Nowitzki: "When he's hitting tough shots like that, all you can do is contest them and hope he misses." Duncan on the win: "It's huge for us. We've given away some games we should have won here early, but we can't complain our record. We're excited about where we are. And we're excited about how much better we can be." Manu Ginobili: "We knew coming in that against Dallas it was going to be tough. They have so many guys who can make shots on their team. Nowitzki, Jason Terry, and Darrell Armstrong can all make big shots." Ginobili: "It was tough. We know against Dallas the game is never over. We knew we'd have to grind it out." Devin Brown on his rebound near the end: "I was able to lose my man on the rebound on our end of the floor with just a little time left and was fortunate to be at the right place at the right time. It was big for us and I'm glad I was able to contribute." Don Nelson: "I thought we play as high a level as we could and I'm very pleased with our effort. There was a couple of huge plays. I thought the offensive rebound by Brown was really a big play that set us back and gave them another possession. But those things will happen and he had a running start. He doesn't get that ball maybe it goes the other way, that's way it was a big play. And then the tip in by Duncan I thought the ball could have been on the rim and that was a big play also. Other than that I have no complaints about the game. I thought we played well, we played hard, and we were pretty effective tonight." Nelson: "That's what our demise was tonight - the second shot. I thought we defended well. You know the mistakes we made today we got away with." Nelson on San Antonio: "It's not just the Tim Duncan show here anymore. They blend in everybody." Nelson: "You can't take anything from one game. It was a good basketball game. We played at as high a level as we could. I'm very pleased with the effort. Other than a couple of lapses, we played real well." Dirk Nowitzki: "We really hung in there. It wasn't a thing of effort. Everybody played hard tonight, they gave it their best shot and we lost to a good team, the best home team in the league. They're a smart basketball team and they deserved to win. They got a couple of lucky bounces, and one time the ball went over my head. We really didn't get all the balls we were supposed to get, I guess they just wanted a little more." Nowitzki: "It's a tough loss for us, but everybody gave it their best shot. We were missing 2 very good rebounders. Josh is probably the best in the league at his position. And Damp is always good for 8 or 10. But the Spurs got 2nd chances all night." Nowitzki: "They got 2nd chance opportunities all game long. And then the killer when we were down by 2, they get another." Michael Finley: "Moral victories are for non-playoff teams. For us to not win - it's impossible to step forward in my eyes." Finley: "They call it homecourt advantage for a reason. Every ball seemed to bounce their way. Every call that they needed, they got. It was a tough loss to swallow." Finley on Bowen's layup that Duncan touched: "It was a goaltend all the way. The ball was in. [Duncan] didn't give it a chance to come out. I'm standing next to the ref. I thought he saw the same thing. I'm 6-7, he's 5-5; I guess that was the difference." Jerry Stackhouse: "We were right there. The 3rd quarter was their quarter. It was a methodical quarter. The 1st half we were able to get up and down the court. We had success with the random plays. But it was their tempo and we sort of got it back in the 4th, but we were fighting up hill. We made an effort to get back in to the hustle category. I mean they were leading us big in to the rebounds and we closed the gap a little bit, but with a big team like that they're going to get the offensive rebounds." Stackhouse on the series vs San Antonio: "They've beaten us 3 times, but when it comes down to it, hopefully they'll have us in the back of their heads after this. When we're whole, it could be a different story." Darrell Armstrong on Brown's offensive rebound near the end: "We work on that all the time. Late in the game, that's when you have to be solid on plays like that. I felt it was my missed block out." Fortunately, the struggling New Jersey Nets were in town. Unfortunately, it was a really ugly game. Erick Dampier played after missing the previous game due to a knee contusion, but it was painful watching him hobble up and down the court as he was visibly limping all game long. Josh Howard remained out with an upper respiratory infection, but he may be able to return for Tuesday's game (he lost about 8 pounds while sick). New Jersey also played the night before and had their own problems as star Richard Jefferson is out for the season and Brian Scalabrine has been sitting for a while with a strained hamstring. So the night after playing an entertaining game, this game showed how hard basketball can sometimes be. The low score wasn't a result of defense, just lots of missed shots. Dallas held small leads early on an used an 8-2 run to go up 14-6 with 6 minutes left. Dallas' lead would switch between 6 and 8 points over the next 5 minutes. Jerry Stackhouse drained a 3-pointer with 35 seconds to go to cap the scoring for the quarter and gave Dallas a 25-14 lead after 1. Dallas shot 53% FG while New Jersey only shot 28% FG, but the Mavs were really sloppy with the ball and had 10 turnovers. Dallas' shooting went down in the 2nd quarter and New Jersey was finally able to hit some shots. New Jersey opened the quarter by scoring the first 8 points including 2 3-pointers to pull within 22-25 with 9:30 to go as Dallas missed their first 6 shots. Dirk Nowitzki finally put Dallas on the board in the quarter with 8:45 left and Dallas continued to hold a single-digit lead. But Nowitzki sprained his ankle with 5:30 to go and headed to the locker room for the rest of the quarter. Dallas led 34-29 with 4:10 left and New Jersey scored the next 6 points to go up 35-34 with 2:40 remaining, but that would be their only lead as Dallas answered with a 5-1 mini-run. Jason Collins capped the scoring of the quarter with a pair of free throws. Dallas led 39-38 at the half. Dallas only shot 6-24 FG in the 3rd quarter while New Jersey shot 8-15 FG. Dallas breathed a sigh of relief as Nowitzki came back to play in the 2nd half. He scored the first 2 buckets of the 3rd quarter and Jason Terry converted a 3-point play to give Dallas a 46-38 lead with 9:50 left and Dallas continued to hold a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. The quarter included an ugly stretch of over 2 minutes where the teams went scoreless in missing 9 shots. Dallas led 60-52 with 2 minutes remaining and New Jersey scored the next 8 points, with 6 of them coming from Vince Carter. Nowitzki hit a jumper at the quarter buzzer and Dallas led 62-59 after 3. The game stayed close early in the 4th quarter and New Jersey took only their 2nd lead of the game when a layup by Jason Kidd gave the Nets a 68-67 lead with 7:30 to go. But Dallas scored the next 4 points to regain the lead. Dallas led 73-71 with 6 minutes remaining and finally put together a strong run in scoring the next 12 points, capped by consecutive 3-pointers by Terry, to go up 85-71 with 3:30 left. Dallas led 86-75 with 1:10 remaining and New Jersey would not surrender and started intentionally fouling. A turnover by Michael Finley did result in a 3-pointer by Rodney Buford to pull the Nets within 80-87 with a minute left, but Dallas hit 11-12 free throws the rest of the way to get the win. Carter hit a meaningless 3-pointer at the game buzzer. Dallas won 98-93. Well, it was ugly; definitely not a pretty game. But Dallas found a way to win after a tough game the night before and 3 players playing hobbled. Neither team shot well and the only reason the score finally got respectable was New Jersey's relentless intentionally fouling and them hitting shots in the last minute of the game - the score was 86-75 when they started fouling. Dallas shot 39.2% (31-79) FG including 8-20 3-pointers and New Jersey shot 41.5% (39-94) FG including 6-15 3-pointers. The free throw discrepancy looks huge at first glance as Dallas shot 28-31 FT while New Jersey shot just 9-13 FT, but Dallas only shot 15-17 FT once you take out all the intentional fouls. With all the missed shots, there were lots of rebounds. Dallas out-rebounded New Jersey 53-44 and both had 12 offensive rebounds. Dallas did overcome their 1st quarter turnover problem and only had 6 in the last 3 quarters. It was a team effort for Dallas as they had 5 players in double-digits scoring including 3 with double-doubles. Dirk Nowitzki led the way with 26 point including 10-10 FT [all his free throws were not from intentional fouls] and 12 rebounds - all defensive. He now has 9,998 career points and should reach the 10,000 milestone early in Tuesday's Washington game. Jerry Stackhouse had his 2nd start of the season and had 20 points including 5-16 FG and 10 rebounds. Michael Finley had 16 points including 6-17 FG and 5 rebounds. Jason Terry had 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Despite limping through the game, Erick Dampier had 10 points and 11 rebounds. It was again a non-showing by the bench as the rest of the players (5) combined for just 11 points and 10 rebounds, though Alan Henderson was good at grabbing rebounds during his 21 minutes with 6 boards including 4 offensive (but he needs to stop shooting (1-4 FG)). Vince Carter led the way for Toronto with 29 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. Some how Jason Kidd had a triple-double - a very quiet one with 10 points on 5-15 FG, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. He also had 5 turnovers. Rodney Buford continued to get open looks and had 18 points. He also had 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Jason Collins had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Nenad Krstic had 13 points and 5 rebounds and Travis Best had 11 points. Quotes Don Nelson: "It was a good one to get over. I thought we were vulnerable tonight. I never felt easy about the game - from when I got up this morning until 4 seconds to go. We found a way to win and that was the main thing. We are pretty banged up right now. We are running out of bodies." Nelson: "They're not a very good offensive team. They struggle to score. It was a good one to get over because we were running out of bodies." Nelson: "2 guys I needed a game from, Stackhouse and Finley, were fatigued from the back-to-back. I didn't know I was going to have Dirk the 2nd half. I don't know that we could have won the game had we not had him. He had a pretty darn good game." Nelson: "Stackhouse is a good offensive player and he had a tough assignment guarding Carter. I had to make the switch because he was getting too easy postups. I thought Mike found some energy somewhere and did a good job of denying him the ball and make it more difficult for him." Nelson on Dampier: "I thought he was pretty good on one leg." Nelson on subbing Nowitzki out when he was 2 points shy of 10,000: "I know the fans wanted him to get to 10,000. But I only needed him in there just in case they were fouling and he had the ball. I didn't want him on the floor the last minute and risk further injury." Dirk Nowitzki on his ankle: "I could feel right away it wasn't that bad. I came down a little awkward and walked it off. We took X-rays to see what the bone spurs were doing in there and that they were having fun. I got it re-taped, went back out there. It didn't feel great but I've got a nice day off." Nowitzki: "It was ugly out there. We couldn't really get going. There was no energy in the building and we never really got going the way we wanted to. But sometimes you just have to win ugly." Nowitzki on the boos when he was subbed out at the end: "I had no idea about the milestone. I thought, 'Why are they booing me?'" Jerry Stackhouse: "It was a hard fought win especially from playing last night. The guys played a lot of minutes and it was a tough loss, but fortunately we didn't have to travel a long ways. Tonight we ran into a team that was rested a little bit. It was one of those grind it out Eastern Conference type of game and fortunately we were able to make some plays at the end and win it." Stackhouse: "We didn't shoot the well in the 2nd half, but we got guys that are capable. [Terry] got on a stretch there in the 4th quarter and knocked down some big 3s and gave us a little separation. That's the thing about us, we're a team and you never know who's going to do it. Tonight when we really needed to make something happen when we were sputtering a little bit, JT took it upon himself and got us a couple of defensive stops." Stackhouse on Nowitzki: "He can shoot the ball, we know that. He can go out there on 2 broken ankles and still shoot the ball. He wants to be out there. When we get in a little lull like we did tonight, he's the guy we look to to make the big shot." Stackhouse on rebounding: "It was either good board work or a lot of missed shots, one or the other." Stackhouse on his 3-point shooting: "I'm finally starting to get my legs under me a little bit. My 3 ball is feeling a little better. I never ever worry about percentages. I know that if I have an open look that I'm going to take it and I feel like it is going to go in." Terry on his 4th quarter shooting: "Cuban was on me, man. He was like, 'Let it rip. Keep shooting.' When your boss is on you like that, you're going to let it go with no hesitation and it fell tonight." Alan Henderson: "It was a tough win, but a good win for us. They played hard and they have some excellent all-star players over there. They always have a chance when they take the court even though their record's not that good so far this year. It was a tough game and a win that we really needed coming off 2 losses." Henderson on some fans booing when Nowitzki subbed out: "We didn't even know that he was close to a big milestone and I guess the fans wanted to see that. So everybody come out next game and you'll get to see him get that mark." Lawrence Frank: "This was a game that we were definitely in. It was a 1 point game with 6 minutes and change to go. We had 3 quality looks that didn't go down. Nowitzki hit 6 free throws and then Terry hit a huge 3 to put them up 11. We kept on fighting, but it wasn't enough against an obviously high-level team." Frank on the free throw difference: "I think we had a very good officiating crew tonight. Vince attacked the rim hard tonight, but unfortunately, he didn't get touched the way Dallas got touched. We had our chance, we knew it was going to very hard for us to win a 124-120 game. It was close late, but they converted down the stretch and we didn't." Frank: "I think these 2 games show we're not that far away. There is no consolation prize, this still goes into the L column. But I think we can learn from these games and continue to improve. If not, these are just 2 losses." Jason Kidd: "We gave a good effort and played our game tonight in the sense of slowing them down. They just got to the free throw line and we couldn't get stops or make shots when they were hitting shots. The effort was there, we just came up short." Kidd on the pace of the game: "We knew they played last night, but we wanted to slow the game to take advantage of them maybe getting impatient. We wanted to limit Dirk's touches, but Stackhouse, Finley, and Terry all stepped up for them." Kidd: "We're not going to quit. We're going to continue to play hard no matter what the score is. We were down 11 early, we could have folded the tent. But we kept fighting back and it was a ballgame. On the road, you can only give yourself a fair chance and that's what we did tonight." Kidd on Carter: "I thought Vince played his best game to date. He was aggressive and took the ball to the basket. We have to make open shots, but we were right in it and it could have gone either way." Vince Carter on the free throw difference: "I was just trying to get to the rim. I wanted to make something happen, but it was almost like I was going in there and getting beat up for nothing. That's why, sometimes, it's almost worth just pulling up and shooting. I'm going to keep playing my game until I get those calls. I don't shy away from contact, but like I said, we just have to continue to do what we do best." Carter on defense: "First off, we wanted to keep them under 100 points. We did a good job to start with, but accomplishing half of our goal and not the whole thing won't cut it against a good team like that. We need to keep fighting. If we continue to play this way, good things are going to happen for us." Carter: "It's not getting frustrating yet. We need to keep fighting. We played better in the 4th quarter. That's a step in the right direction."
