Note that Sunday's game vs Denver at the AAC has a noon start time. LA Clippers at Dallas (January 20) The Clippers were playing the 2nd night of a back-to-back, losing a tough one in San Antonio the night before, and were playing without Kerry Kittles. Dallas started off with small leads (none larger than 5 points) in the first 6 minutes of the game. Dallas led 14-10 with 6 minutes to go and the Clippers went on a 15-2 run to go up 25-16 with 1:25 remaining as Dallas shot 1-10 FG during the run. The Clippers led 29-20 after 1. Elton Brand had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Dallas only shot 8-23 FG while the Clippers shot 11-24 FG in the quarter. Dallas opened the 3rd quarter with a 12-2 run to go up 34-31 with 7:35 left. The game would stay close with neither team holding more than a 4 point lead over the next 7 minutes. The Clippers scored the last 5 points of the quarter as Dallas went scoreless over the last 2 1/2 minutes of the quarter. The Clippers led 48-42 at the half. Both teams went scoreless over the first minute of the 3rd quarter and 2 free throws by Corey Maggette gave the Clippers their largest lead of the game at 50-42 with 10:40 remaining, but Michael Finley answered with a jumper (his first basket of the game) and the Clippers would hold a single-digit lead over the next 5 minutes. Dallas managed to tie the game at 59-59 with 5:10 to go and the teams would trade leads a couple of times. The Clippers led 64-63 with 3 minutes remaining and the Mavs went on a 10-2 run, capped by a dunk by Jerry Stackhouse, to go up 73-66 with 40 seconds left. A jumper by Maggette capped the quarter scoring. Dallas led 73-68 after 3. Jason Terry had 11 points in the quarter. Dallas shot 60% FG and the Clippers just shot 28% FG in the 3rd quarter. Devin Harris stole the ball and got a dunk on the break to open the 4th quarter. Rick Brunson hit a jumper with 10:35 left to pull the Clippers within 70-75, but it would be 8 minutes before the Clippers would score another bucket as Dallas turned up the defense and the Clippers missed their next 7 shots and committed 4 turnovers including 2 24 second violations. Dallas took full advantage in going on a 18-3 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Finley, to make it a blowout at 93-73 with 3 minutes left. Dallas won 99-77. As the Clippers' coach said, it went from a tight game to a blowout in a heartbeat. And it was defense, not offense, that got Dallas the easy win. Dallas out-scored the Clippers 26-9 in the 4th quarter [fewest points scored by a Mavs opponent in the 4th] as the Clippers only shot 2-12 FG and had 6 turnovers in the 4th. Dallas finished the game shooting 48.8% (40-82) FG including 8-18 3-pointers and the Clippers shot 35.4% (28-79) FG including 0-5 3-pointers. Dallas had 11 steals and the Clippers had 3 steals. Dallas did give up far too many offensive rebounds has the Clippers had 20 offensive rebounds. His numbers don't show it, but Shawn Bradley was Dallas' anchor to their good 2nd half defense. Bradley only had 4 points (an impressive putback slam and a dunk from a nice feed by Dirk Nowitzki) and 4 rebounds in 19 minutes, but you had to see the game to see the affect he had. Dirk Nowitzki was the high man with 28 points to go with his 8 rebounds. Jason Terry again shot well and had 15 points on 7-11 FG, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Michael Finley missed all 6 shots he attempted in the 1st half, but shot 5-7 FG in the 2nd half. He finished with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Josh Howard was the 4th Mav in double-digits with 13 points on a perfect 6-6 FG and 1-1 3-pointers. He also had 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Erick Dampier continues to hobble up and down the court and had 5 points on a poor 2-8 FG and 1-4 FT, but did snag 11 rebounds including 6 offensive and had 3 blocks. Jerry Stackhouse was quiet with 9 points including 3-9 FG and had 5 assists. Devin Harris chipped in 7 points on 3-4 FG and 1-1 3-pointers, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in 20 minutes. Elton Brand led the way for the Clippers with a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds including 5 offensive. Bobby Simmons also had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds including 5 offensive. Corey Maggette had a poor outing with just 14 points (he averages 21.7) including 4-11 FG. He also had 5 rebounds. No other Clipper was in double-digits. Quotes Avery Johnson: "This was a sweet win for us. We have a tough stretch of games coming up, but I am really proud of the guys effort tonight. I'm really proud of their concentration all day long. We had a really good shoot around this morning, very focused and it carried over into the game. Not so much in the 1st half because we didn't rebound that well. The defense that we played in the 2nd half is the type of defense I know this team can play. We played pretty good defense in the 2nd quarter, but we gave up offensive rebounds. We played really good defense in the 2nd half. We probably played 30 minutes of defense, but I am looking for 38-42. I need longer stretches of defense and to finish it off with rebounding. We did a much better job with rebounding in the 2nd half. We were very physical. Bradley did a good job for us off the bench." Johnson on Finley: "I talked to him about it at half time. He was just passing up his shots. He was 0-6 in the 1st half. I just told him to shoot when he was open and pass when you are not. He got the message and really played well. He gave us a big lift in the 2nd half." Johnson on Bradley: "Shawn knows we are depending on him to do what he is good at: block shots and clog up the middle. He did a pretty good job on Brand and that is a tough cover for anybody." Jerry Stackhouse: "We obviously let them get a lot of offensive rebounds and 2nd chance points in the 1st half. In the 2nd half we didn't. We boxed out, got the rebound, and pushed it back at them." Stackhouse: "Once we get the ball in the open court a lot of good things happens for us and tonight was no different. When we get the ball off of that backboard and get that thrust we're real difficult to deal with. That's the way we want to play and we got to do that in the 2nd half." Stackhouse on Harris and Bradley: "Dev came in and did a good job. He pushed the ball, got into the pick-n-roll, made some things happen, and made the right plays. He's getting better and better. Shawn came in and gave us a big lift. He contested [Brand's] shots and made it hard for him. Overall we did a better job of helping out in the 2nd half." Jason Terry: "Our big adjustment was paying attention to offensive rebounds. 2nd shots were killing us. Avery got us focused. ... We got in our tempo." Terry: "We had to pay attention to their offensive rebounds. Their 2nd shots were killing us. Avery readjusted us at halftime. He got us focused and we didn't give up many 2nd shots after that." Terry: "We had to get some energy. We didn't have any energy in the 1st half. Coming out at halftime, I knew we had to pick it up. We had play Mavericks basketball and that's getting up, running, and shooting." Josh Howard: "That's one thing coach was talking about was hitting the boards a whole lot harder in the 2nd half. I think every guy took that as a personal challenge and stepped up." Howard on the Clippers offensive rebounding: "Like Avery said, their best shot is a missed shot. That's what they were doing in the 1st half, getting a lot of 2nd chance points and we just had to cut that out if we wanted to win." Howard on Dallas' scoring: "I just think that it is guys finally gelling and coming along. Obviously, we still have a lot of work to do, but when we're out there comfortable with one another we can light it up." Devin Harris: "AJ is a little more vocal, but he's calling the same plays Nellie calls. We made a conscious effort in the 4th quarter to pick it up defensively. We forced them out of what they wanted to do." Mike Dunleavy: "We played really well the 1st half. In the 2nd half, we had a combination of things go against us. What happens is a team like that blows up on you. We came out and missed some easy shots, made a couple turnovers, missed a couple assignments, and they blow it up to 15 in a heartbeat. We've had stretches against teams, although we've been in every game, we've had this happen to us a couple times on a back-to-back where we have come in a played well early and fade a little bit down the stretch of the game. The 1st half was the way we need to play against them." Dunleavy: "It was a tale of 2 halves for us. In the 2nd half, we had a combination of things go against us." Dunleavy: "I thought we came out and played just like we did in San Antonio last night for the 1st half. We moved the ball well, we made good decisions, we made shots. The 2nd half, we missed a lot of open shots, a lot of layups underneath the basket, missed a couple assignments, and they did some good things too." Elton Brand on the 2nd half: "It turned around quickly. We were down 2, I missed an easy shot, they came down and hit a 3 and it's 5 points. They jump on you that fast. We were right there the entire game. We had a good lead. We felt we had a chance." Brand: "They played good defense and we may have run out of gas late." Brand: "You have to give Dallas a lot of credit. They haven't lost only 12 games for nothing. They are a good team. We may have run out of gas a little bit, but you have to give a team like that the credit." Brand: "Very discouraging not to come out with this one. Especially the effort we put forth in the 1st half to be up by 6. We thought we had a chance to win this one. They hit shots and our turnovers really, really hurt us." Corey Maggette on the 4th quarter collapse: "I don't know happened. I'm still mind-boggled by it. We just didn't execute. I don't know, man. It just went so fast. ... This is a team we can beat. I don't think Dallas is better than us. ... We just need to be better, man, and continue to play hard. We can't have those lapses in the 2nd half. This has happened to us before. We just need to be better." Bobby Simmons on the 2nd half: "Of course it was defense. If they don't defend, then we don't make turnovers. I think we tried to make plays a little too fast. Before, we let it happen as far as letting guys get into good position." But they were playing the expansion Charlotte Bobcats. The Bobcats did take advantage of Dallas' early sluggish play and went up 10-5 with 7:40 left and Charlotte would hold a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. A 3-pointer by Keith Bogans gave Charlotte their largest lead of 27-19 with 35 seconds to go, but Jerry Stackhouse closed the quarter by scoring the last 4 points. Charlotte led 27-23 after 1. Charlotte held a small lead - no larger than 5 points - over the first 9 minutes of the 2nd quarter. Charlotte led 48-44 with 2:55 remaining and Michael Finley found Shawn Bradley for the dunk, Finley drained consecutive 3-pointers, Finley hit a short jumper, and Dirk Nowitzki nailed a bucket as the quarter ended to give Dallas a 56-48 lead at halftime. Dallas shot 55% FG and Charlotte shot 51% FG in the half. Josh Howard hit a jumper to open the 3rd quarter to give Dallas a double-digit lead, but Charlotte scored the next 4 points and Dallas held a single-digit lead most of the rest of the quarter. Shawn Bradley suffered a thigh contusion midway through the quarter and did not return. Dallas led 70-66 with 2:15 remaining and again closed the quarter strong in scoring the last 9 points of the quarter, capped by a 3-pointer by Finley as the quarter ended. Dallas led 79-66 after 3. Dallas led between 9 and 14 points the first 6 minutes of the 4th quarter. But this is not your typical expansion team and Charlotte did not give up (and Dallas slacked off some). Dallas led 89-76 with 6:25 to go and Charlotte started chipping away, with the help of 3 3-pointers. A 3-pointer by Jason Kapono pulled Charlotte within 89-95 with 3:40 left. Dallas then missed 4 shots and 2 free throws and the Bobcats scored the next 5 points to pull within 94-95 with 2:15 to go. Jerry Stackhouse hit 2 free throws and Kapono answered with a bucket up close with 1:45 remaining. Jason Terry drove for 2, Charlotte missed on 2 attempts, and Michael Finley nailed a jumper to give Dallas a 101-96 lead with 38 seconds left. Charlotte called timeout and then Kapono nailed another 3-pointer with 34 seconds remaining. Dallas ran a little time off the clock and Terry was isolated on the wing and nailed the mid-range jumper with 14 seconds to go. Jason Hart missed the quick 3-pointer and Stackhouse was fouled on the rebound. Stackhouse's free throws capped the scoring. Dallas won 105-99. It wasn't an easy win, but it was a win. Thanks to Jason Terry's clutch shots, the Mavs were able to hang on to the win. Give Charlotte credit for not giving up and getting back into the game, but Dallas did not seem 100% as Charlotte rallied back as they may have had a case of tired legs. Dallas shot 48.1% (38-79) FG including 4-15 3-pointers and Charlotte shot 43.2% (41-95) FG including 6-14 3-pointers - 4 of their 3-pointers came in the last 4 1/2 minutes of the game. Dallas did have a distinct advantage at the line [which surprised me as the refs weren't call much early on (which resulted in Jerry Stackhouse's technical and they could have passed out more technicals)]. Dallas shot 25-31 FT and Charlotte shot 11-16 FT. Dallas again gave up a high number of offensive rebounds as Charlotte had 17 offensive boards. Dallas did have a season high tying 9 blocks in the game. It was a balanced attack for Dallas as no one player dominated the game. Michael Finley had 20 points. Dirk Nowitzki had 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks, but struggled in the 2nd half where he shot just 2-11 FG. Jerry Stackhouse had 19 points off the bench on 5-9 FG and 9-9 FT and 4 rebounds in 26 minutes. Jason Terry was again solid with 17 points on 8-11 FG and 1-3 3-pointers and 7 assists. He's averaging 16 points including 59.6% FG and 54.3% 3-pointers and 7 assists in the last 10 games (and an amazing 25-34 FG and 6-10 3-pointers in the last 3 games). Josh Howard was the 5th Mav in double-digits with 11 points including 4-12 FG and 6 rebounds. Erick Dampier chipped in 8 points on 1-4 FG and 6-10 FT and 6 rebounds in 21 minutes. Jason Kapono came alive in the 4th quarter as 13 of his 14 points came in the last 4:25 of the game, shooting 4-9 FG in that time span. Emeka Okafor continued his double-double streak with 24 points on 11-18 FG and 2-5 FT and 15 rebounds including 8 offensive. Jason Hart did a nice job of filling in for the injured Brevin Knight with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists. Primoz Brezec had 14 points and 8 rebounds including 4 offensive. Kareem Rush was the 5th Bobcat in double-digits with 11 points, but he shot just 4-18 FG. Quotes Avery Johnson: "You're always worried about pulling out the win in a close game. I think it would be really arrogant if I said I wasn't concerned. Like I told the team after the game, I'm more impressed with this win tonight than last night's. We had a tough game, we got in at 4:00 in the morning and played against a team that plays really well at home. This team is well coached. It was nip and tuck down the stretch. They played well. Kapono was big down the stretch. Okafor dominated on the glass. So, you tip your hats off to them but at the same time, we really showed some toughness tonight. To keep this team under 100 points, that's pretty good." Johnson on Terry: "I'm not doubting that kid anymore. We had a little pep talk at halftime. I won't disclose what we talked about and he won't say anything - if he does, I'll kill him. But, he really got it going. We count on Jason. Right now Jason is really moving his game up there and the more we win, the more he can silence a lot of the critics. He knows I'm in his corner. Even though I like to box him in that corner a lot in practice and in film session, he's getting better. He was huge for us down the stretch." Johnson: "Dirk didn't really have his legs tonight. So, it's good when other guys like Stackhouse and Jason Terry and Michael Finley can step up for us. They were really big for us during certain stretches of the 2nd half. We had 9 blocks tonight, so I'm pleased with that. They ended up shooting 43% from the field. We try to hold teams under 42%, but they shot 52% at the half. So, it was a much better effort, especially in the 3rd quarter. We got some stops down the stretch when we needed it. That's a sign of a team making progress." Dirk Nowitzki: "I was pretty much cold all night. But we have a very good scoring team." Nowitzki on Terry's hot shooting: "Every time he shoots, it looks like it's going in. He's been playing big. He's pushing the ball out. He's really picking up on the offense." Nowitzki on Okafor: "I got to see him last summer during the Olympics. He is a very tough and physical player. In the future if he continues to work on his game I think he will become a very nice player." Michael Finley: "Bad teams play well at home. We learned that in Atlanta. We knew it would be a tough game. AJ warned us from shoot around to breakfast this morning all the way to tip-off." Jerry Stackhouse: "The Bobcats are a dangerous team. They are young and have a lot of athletes. If we would have come in here underestimating this team we would have lost." Stackhouse on Terry: "He is the key to this team, because he has the ball in hands and he controls the tempo for us. If he's dragging the ball up the court and it's a slow tempo game, then that's not where we need to be. He started pushing the ball in the 2nd half tonight and got us into the tempo we like and next thing you know it's a 13 point lead." Jason Terry on Johnson's halftime talk: "Me and him had a good talk. Any time you get a vote of confidence from the coach it means a lot. It motivated me to go out in the 2nd half and just be a general out there on the floor. I'm starting to realize what I was brought here for and that's to come in and play the point guard position and do whatever it takes to win. I've been doing that and now guys are feeling more confident with me, which helps also." Terry on his end of game shots: "I've taken big shots and I've hit big shots. So, I'm not scared at all to step up and do that, but we have plenty of guys that can do that. Tonight, it just fell in my hands, so I took it." Terry on his shot with 14 seconds left and Steve Smith guarding him: "He's a good friend of mind. He was playing my crossover and I just rose up and knocked it down." Terry: "The bar is set so high for this team that we're not even close to reaching our potential. We've shown flashes, but if we can do it on a consistent basis, that's going to tell if we're going to be a good team or not and I know we will be in time and me maturing is a part of that process." Josh Howard: "We have concentrated more in practice. And you know practice makes perfect. We have a lot of new people on our team, so it took us a while to come together." Howard: "We had to get a lot of defensive rebounds. They are a great offensive rebounding team. So keeping them off the boards was key. They also made some big shots in the 1st and 2nd quarters." Bernie Bickerstaff: "That's a terrific basketball team, a veteran basketball team that knew how to create mismatches and when we would put our finger in the dike the lead would sling somewhere else. It's simply because they have the players to do it. We kind of took it away from Nowitzki and tried to force it to the other side and there was Finley. I thought Jason Terry made some big shots down the stretch. Their players stepped up and made shots down the stretch when they had to make the shots. It was a hell of a basketball game. The guys that are in that room I'm certainly proud of." Bickerstaff: "What they did was create mismatches. They took us down inside and Nowitzki just shot over us. It wasn't that we weren't there. They went down to the low post and shot over us with their size. So we made an adjustment the 2nd half on that. We tried to keep the ball on the other side but we didn't turn the ball over in the 2nd half. We had 9 turnovers in the 1st half and no turnovers in the 2nd half. Dallas is a good basketball team. They're a complete basketball team. We almost had to play a perfect basketball game." Bickerstaff on Kapono: "You shoot the ball, that's what you do. You don't worry about missing. They got him the ball in a rhythm. When you can shoot the ball like that, you space the defense and you can penetrate a few times and go to the hole." Bickerstaff: "We lost a little focus. It's something we have to learn to fight through." Bickerstaff on the refs: "One of my players told me tonight than an official told him the last game that we would not get calls because we complained. One of my guys out of concern told me. I think I raise a lot of hell. It could be adverse to us but I think I still owe it to my guys the way they play basketball and the way they put themselves out there. I really don't want to believe they would say anything like that. I would hope they didn't." Emeka Okafor: "We gave them a run for their money. We were down for a while. Once again it didn't go our way." Okafor on the 4th quarter: "Basketball is a game of runs. The earlier the better, but we're going to take them whenever we can. As far as it happening earlier in the game, I guess we just have to play good team basketball." Okafor: "We just have to be more consistent. These past few games we've been pretty good at staying in the game and playing real hard. We played a good game. We just have to pat ourselves on the back and try to win the next one." Okafor: "We played a good game. Everybody played their hearts out. We just have to pat ourselves on the back and try to win the next one." Gerald Wallace: "I'm just frustrated right now with the way I am playing." Wallace on Dallas: "They've got shooters from 1 to 4 and a good rebounder in Dampier. Great post-up players, great drivers, and Nowitzki at 4. ... Your regular 4-guy has his back to the basket. He's no regular 4-guy." Jason Kapono: "It was bit too late. We started our run about a minute too late. Dallas played well. They didn't miss shots at the end of the game. They are a veteran team. They got the shots they wanted and they made them. We didn't." Kapono: "They built a big enough lead that they were able to come out with the win. They definitely fought hard. We couldn't get stops at the end and we couldn't make shots. We kind of went through a drought. We fought hard, but we came up short." Kapono: "As a team we just have to stay confident. Once we start getting down by 10 or 12 that's when we start playing more confident and free. I think we need to come into the game playing free and confident instead of having to fight back from leads. It would be a much closer and tighter game and we would have a better shot to win." Jason Hart: "We played with a lot of effort. We just waited too late. Guys came out with effort, we just came up short. We played with effort we just didn't win." Hart on missing Knight: "When Brevin was playing and I was in at the end of the game, I would shoot it. I'm going to look to do something. You can't be scared to fail. When I'm in the game if I've got an open shot I've got the confidence to shoot it make or miss."
