Dallas at New Jersey (November 13) The hot shooting Dallas showed in the Miami game was long gone 2 days later. The game was tied 7-7 and New Jersey scored the next 8 points to go up 15-7 with 5 minutes left as Dallas missed their next 4 field goals and also missed 2 free throws. A jumper by Jerry Stackhouse with 3:15 remaining pulled Dallas within 4 points and was Dallas' first field goal in over 4 1/2 minutes. New Jersey was struggling with their shooting almost as much as Dallas and there were only 6 points combined scored in the last 3 minutes of the quarter as the teams shot 2-12 FG. And 2 of those points came off of free throws with under a second left as Richard Jefferson blew up the court and no one slowed him down until he neared the basket and Erick Dampier was called for his 3rd foul. New Jersey led 22-16 after 1. It was Dallas' lowest scoring quarter of the season and the Mavs shot a mere 27% FG. Dallas opened the 3rd quarter with a 16-3 run to go up 32-25 with 8:30 to go. But New Jersey answered with an 8-1 run to tie the game at 33-33 with 6:25 left. The game remained close the rest of the quarter as neither team held more than a 4 point lead. Devin Harris had the play of the night when he picked Zoran Planicic's pocket and took the ball the other way for the one-handed flying jam over Rodney Buford on the break with 2 minutes remaining. Dallas led 44-42 at the half. Dirk Nowitzki had 11 points in the 2nd quarter (he only had a 3-pointer in the 1st quarter and only attempted 4 shots) and Stackhouse had 9 points. For the half, Dallas shot 36% FG and New Jersey shot 40% FG. Dallas led 58-55 with 6:10 to go and Marquis Daniels hit a jumper and then Stackhouse scored the next 6 points to give Dallas their first double-digit lead at 66-55 with 4:15 left. But 11 points was their largest lead in the quarter. Dallas led 71-62 after 3. Stackhouse had 11 points including 5-5 FG in the 3rd quarter. As much as they tried, Dallas could not pull away from New Jersey - but the Nets also could not get closer than 8 points. Stackhouse found Nowitzki in the corner and Nowitzki drained the 3-pointer and, after a New Jersey miss, Nowitzki seemed to give the knockout punch by hitting a turnaround jumper to give Dallas a 90-76 with 4:15 to go. After the teams traded turnovers, Jefferson hit 2 free throws with 3:30 left and the Nets would not score again. Dallas won 94-78. It wasn't pretty, but it was a win. What little offense New Jersey was showing completely fell apart in the 4th quarter where they shot just 3-15 FG. Dallas out-scored New Jersey 23-16 in the 4th (and only Richard Jefferson and Eric Williams scored for New Jersey in the quarter). It wasn't the blow out it could have been, but Dallas usually struggles in early games (as seen by their 16 point 1st quarter). For the game, Dallas shot 44.9% (35-78) FG and New Jersey shot 34.8% (24-69) FG. Dallas made life harder for themselves by missing 10 free throws (19-29). But they controlled the ball and only committed 10 turnovers while New Jersey was sloppy with 21 turnovers. It was the 9th straight time Dallas defeated New Jersey. It was a 1-2 punch of Dirk Nowitzki and Jerry Stackhouse. Nowitzki continued his stellar string of performances and had an all-around solid game with 31 points on 10-18 FG, 3-4 3-pointers, and 8-11 FT, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals. 11 of Nowitzki's points came in the 4th quarter. Stackhouse finally woke up and had 28 points including 10-18 FG, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Marquis Daniels and Erick Dampier were the only other Mavs in double-digits. Daniels had 11 points including 5-15 FG (still missing some easy putbacks), 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Dampier had another quiet night with 10 points and just 3 rebounds in 26 foul limited minutes. He did have 3 blocks, though. Devin Harris' steal and dunk was the only good thing (and it was memorable) in a poor outing where he had 4 points on 2-7 FG, no rebounds, and no assists in 12 minutes. Jason Terry didn't do much scoring (3 points including 1-3 FG), but at least he had some rebounds and assists. Terry had 4 rebounds and 4 assists in 23 minutes. Josh Howard had 4 points on 2-7 FG and led the team with 10 rebounds. Richard Jefferson tried to do it all, but his shooting touch wasn't there. He had 28 points on 6-17 FG and 15-18 FT and 10 rebounds. But he did turn the ball over 6 times. 2nd year man Zoran Planinic had a career high 16 points including 10 points in the 1st half, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. He also turned the ball over 6 times. Eric Williams was the only other Net in double-digits with 15 points including 4-6 3-pointers and 7 rebounds. Rodney Buford had a miserable outing in shooting 2-16 FG and getting posterized. Jason Collins hit all 4 of his shots for 8 points and had 7 rebounds. Quotes Don Nelson: "I thought the key to the game today was that Stackhouse came off the bench and was a dominant player. Not only did he score but he moved the ball and made the big pass for the corner 3 for Nowitzki. I thought that was the game winner. He was a dominant guy for me." Nelson: "Nowitzki continues to shoot the ball at a very high level. Everybody else just gutted out a good defensive performance." Nelson: "We are big in the middle with some of them young and some of them old but a lot of guys there. We can mix them up pretty well. We also have the ability to go a little smaller with Henderson playing there. We like him on the floor because he is a great defender and rebounder and never makes an error. The guy is just incredible." Nelson: "We really worked hard on our defense and we have acquired some defensive players. The other guys have worked really hard to perfect their defense. They're not perfect but they blend together pretty well and the system is good because they support one another. We do have shot blockers in the middle. I'm pretty proud of the defense so far this year." Nelson on missing Finley: "We knew going in that we were deep at those 2 positions. We have 4 really good players there. If we can take a hit or take a bullet, it's at those positions." Dirk Nowitzki: "Well it's early in the season. It's only the 2nd week so we have a lot of things to work on but I think we're on track. We're looking a lot better defensively. We've found a good rhythm offensively so far. We know we've had a lot of players hurt in training camp. We couldn't really get together the way we wanted too. Finley was out for 2 weeks. Stackhouse was out for awhile. Marquis was out the whole training camp. So it's a real surprise we found our rhythm offensively and its been a really fun ride so far." Nowitzki: "They did a good job of hanging around so we had to make sure in the 4th quarter we kept it over 10 points. If not, it could have been a different game." Nowitzki: "We have one of the deepest benches in the league. Stackhouse has been great and I'm sure he's going to win a lot of games for us." Nowitzki on Stackhouse: "He can come off the bench and give us points in a heartbeat. He's been great and I'm sure he's going to win a lot games for us this year." Nowitzki: "Orlando was a tough loss for us. We didn't expect to lose, but that's the NBA sometimes. We can't have a letdown against Washington. We want to end on a high." Jerry Stackhouse: "We tried to take advantage of the match ups here. We had smaller guards on us. It didn't matter who was on us. It was a fun game for us. We got in a good rhythm. We haven't really been able to find us a good rhythm - offensively or defensively. We were getting out into passing lanes and getting steals. When you get a couple of layups, it makes long shots easier." Stackhouse: "We're trying to keep teams under 42% shooting. We were able to do a good job of that and we're not allowing anybody to hit 100 points. We feel that we have firepower offensively. If we could get rebounds and stops because rebounds and stops are important to us. Rebounds are really key for us. I thought we did a good job rebounding because that team does a good job with offensive rebounds." Stackhouse: "It was fun. We weren't really doing anything different. I was just able to get some opportunities and it's always good to see the ball go in the hole." Stackhouse: "We weren't trying to do anything different. The game dictated what we did. We were trying to take advantage of some matchups. They had some smaller guards out there. That was probably my best rhythm offensively and defensively." Stackhouse: "I don't have to get 20 every night to get comfortable, but it's nice to see the ball go in the hole." Stackhouse: "I've been comfortable the whole time. But we have guys that can [score], so you don't have to do it every night." Stackhouse on his interaction with Mourning: "We go way back. We've been bumping heads in playoffs when I was in Detroit and he was in Miami. It was nothing much. I told him it was a couple of older guys having some fun." Devin Harris: "There's no telling what we can do if we keep playing defense like that." Lawrence Frank: "You have to give credit to a very good Dallas team. They played extremely well together. Unfortunately we just couldn't get enough good offensive possessions and good position together. They obviously are a much more improved defensive team. Unfortunately we couldn't do enough to get the job done. You have to credit Dallas." Frank: "We are going to be a gritty, hard playing, and competing, giving everything we've got team. In order for us to win we have to defend and we're going to give you maximum effort, that's where it is. Regardless of injuries, that's always been our forte." Frank on Buford: "You're going to have nights like that. He works extremely hard on his shot. He's a good shooter. ... It happens to the greatest of players. ... He took good shots. That's part of the game." Frank on Planinic: "Zoran did a number of good things. This is really Zoran's first opportunity to play. When he showed a postup presence he forced them to change the matchup, which is a credit to him. Zoran is getting better everyday." Richard Jefferson: "We were right there. It was unforced turnovers that allowed them to get a lot of easy buckets and to get going for fastbreak points and that was where we really struggled. But we were right there." Alonzo Mourning: "At times, we play the way we're supposed to play and then get comfortable and relax and exhale and we don't finish the job. It's just like when you're in a fight to the death. You feel sorry for the guy, you're beating him and he's on the ground. But he's still breathing. Then you turn your back on him and he's up and fighting again. That's what it was. We're out there fighting, fighting, fighting, and doing a great job and then we let up. ... You have a team down and you can smell it. I smelled the vulnerability at one point." Mourning: "Our strength right now is our effort and our defense. We're not going to outscore teams. We're not a Dallas. They can get away with, 'Hey, we can play some half-ass defense because at the other end we're going to make 50 to 70% of our shots in some quarters.' I don't know what halftime did to us. I guess we just felt good about ourselves and we didn't have to put forth that same effort we had in the 1st quarter." Mourning: "Regardless of what we did defensively, we didn't do it consistently enough. Yeah, we did it good for long spurts. But long spurts aren't enough. You can't play for 1 quarter and expect to win. You've got to play 4 quarters. We just didn't have that consistency. We kind of let up on the aggressiveness we had in the beginning. We let up." Mourning on Nowitzki: "When you've got a 7-footer shooting the ball the way he's shooting the ball, it's tough to guard him." Mourning on his technical and Stackhouse: "He had the ball and my arm and I was getting him off of me. It just so happens I weigh more than him and am stronger than him, and he happened to go that way and I'm still standing. Obviously, a ref that size can sympathize with someone like that." Mourning on his technical: "It wasn't no frustration. The guy had my arms. The guy had the ball and my arms and I was getting him off me. He should have let my arms and the ball go." Jason Collins on Nowitzki: "Unguardable. I was right there and he hit it. One time, I fell down and he missed. I thought, 'Is that what we have to do?'" Zoran Planinic: "There's no more learning experience. It's time for me to help my team." Washington scored 8 straight points to go up 18-12 with 7 minutes remaining. But that would be the largest lead of the quarter and Washington would lead 30-28 after 1. Antawn Jamison had 10 points and Dirk Nowitzki had 11 points including 5-5 FG. Dallas opened the 2nd quarter with a 13-3 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Jason Terry, to go up 41-33 with 8 minutes to go. Another 3-pointer by Terry gave Dallas their first double-digit lead at 48-38 with 4:40 left. The Mavs' lead would hover around 10 points the rest of the quarter. Dallas led 63-54 at the half. Jerry Stackhouse had 12 points in the 2nd quarter. Dallas shot 54.3% FG and Washington shot 44% FG in the half. But the Mavs were being out-rebounded 25-17 and, thus, Don Nelson opted to start Alan Henderson instead of Marquis Daniels to open the 3rd quarter. A layup by Josh Howard give Dallas a 68-56 lead a minute in, but Washington then went on a 12-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Gilbert Arenas, to pull within 68-69 with 8:10 left. A jumper by Jarvis Hayes gave Washington a 77-76 lead with 5:50 to go, but Nowitzki then hit a free throw and consecutive 3-pointers and Henderson hit a free throw to give Dallas an 84-77 lead with 3:35 remaining. But Washington then scored the next 7 points to tie the game. The game was all tied up at 89-89 after 3. Nowitzki had 12 points in the 3rd quarter. The hot shooting teams cooled of as the teams combined to shoot just 8-24 FG in the first 6 minutes of the 4th quarter and the teams traded small leads. A 3-point play by Arenas pulled Golden State within 104-106 with 3:35 to go. Nowitzki found Erick Dampier for the dunk, Nowitzki found Stackhouse for a 3-pointer, Nowitzki got a jumper, and Nowitzki found Stackhouse for the back breaking 3-pointer to give Dallas a 116-104 lead with 1:35 left. Washington did score the next 4 points, but they could get no closer than 7 points. Dallas won 122-113. Again, it wasn't the prettiest of games, but it counts as a win. Even with the high offense, Dallas looked sluggish at times (especially on the defensive end). They did turn up the defense some during the 4th quarter and Washington went cold in that quarter in only shooting 38.5% FG. Dallas also helped themselves by connecting on 4-4 3-pointers during the 4th quarter. Washington did become the first team to score 100 points against Dallas and shot an opponent high 47.2% FG - the previous being just 41.7% FG. Washington shot 42-89 FG including 6-17 FG. But Dallas shot better at 52.4% (43-82) FG including a white hot 12-19 3-pointers. The Mavs had a season high 29 assists (though Washington also had 29 assists). The Mavs finished their 4 game road trip with a record of 3-1 and have a nice 7-1 start to the season. It was again the Dirk Nowitzki and Jerry Stackhouse show. Nowitzki had another solid outing with 32 points on 10-15 FG, 3-4 3-pointers, and 9-11 FT, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists. He did have 7 turnovers, though. Despite the boos from the fans (but he did get hugs from ex-teammates after the final buzzer), Stackhouse enjoyed the return to the building where he played the past 2 seasons as he had 28 points including 4-6 3-pointers, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists and, more important, got the win. Jason Terry finally woke up and had a good game with 13 points including 3-4 3-pointers, 11 assists (first double-digit assist game by a Mav this season), and 4 steals. Marquis Daniels contributed 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Erick Dampier was the 5th Mav in double-digits with 11 points, but he got called out by the coach after the game as needing to have more solid performances for more than just little spurts. He also had 7 rebounds (4 in the last 6 minutes of the game). Starters Josh Howard had 7 points in 16 minutes and Devin Harris had 9 points in 11 minutes. Alan Henderson continues to play a nice backup role and had 3 points and 7 rebounds including 5 offensive. Washington lost despite having _4_ players score 20+ points. And the 5th starter also had 14 points. That has to be frustrating. Antawn Jamison had 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists in facing his former team. Larry Hughes had 23 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals. Gilbert Arenas had 20 points and 9 assists. Brendan Haywood had a solid outing with 20 points including 9-10 FG and 9 rebounds including 5 offensive. He also had 5 steals and 4 blocks. And Jarvis Hayes had 14 points including 4-13 FG and 7 rebounds. Quotes Don Nelson: "You can go back a lot of games and very seldom do you lose when you have 4 guys score 20 or more. They had balanced scoring, they hurt us in a lot of different ways, but our offense was crisp tonight." Nelson: "3 out of 4 ain't bad on the road. I was a little worried about this one because I thought they were playing real well." Nelson: "The whole start of the season, really, is a surprise. If you are going to struggle early, usually it's on the road. We've fought off all those situations extremely well. Seems like we've been on the road for a month now." Nelson on Dampier: "I'd like to see it more consistently. If you rely on stops down in the 4th quarter, then why don't you get them in the course of the game? I know guys turn it up in the 4th quarter. I thought Damp was a good example of that. He was big in the last 5, 6 minutes of the game, but we need him for more minutes than that to be consistent." Nelson on Dampier: "If you rely on stops in the 4th quarter, why not stop them the rest of the game, too? Damp was big in the last 5 or 6 minutes, but we need him to be big all game." Dirk Nowitzki: "Our defense wasn't great, but at the end we got the stops we needed." Nowitzki: "It's amazing. Early on I didn't think we were going to look this good. This is better than any of us thought it would be." Nowitzki on Stackhouse: "He was balling yesterday [in the New Jersey game]. He was on fire and making shots from everywhere. He's been giving us a big lift, especially now that Mike's out. We need somebody who can come up and score for us and he was big in the last 2 games." Nowitzki on Stackhouse: "I think he's going to be really good for us the whole season. Sometimes you need somebody who can come in off the bench and flat out score and he showed today and last night what he can do. I think he's going to win a lot of games for us this year." Jerry Stackhouse: "When you get traded from a team, the logic is you want to tell them that they made a mistake, but we left on good terms. The media didn't spin it like we left on good terms, but as far as Ernie [Grunfeld] and Eddie [Jordan] and those guys in that locker room, it was mutual. We felt that it was a better situation for them having a younger player and a great situation for me going to a veteran team and a playoff team." Stackhouse: "It feels good to come back here and win. When you get traded, logic tells you that you want to tell them they made a mistake. I was here at the end of the Michael Jordan era, and we all know how that turned out. But I have a lot of friends over there." Stackhouse: "People try to make it more than what it is. I've got a lot of love for those guys over in that locker room and obviously at the end of the game you saw they had a lot of love for me despite everything that's gone on. I feel like I'm in a better place, a place where I'm supposed to be. I'm just happy and enjoying playing the way that I'm playing right now. I guess that's respect when every time you touch the ball you get booed. It was fun to quiet the crowd." Stackhouse on being booed: "I knew it probably wouldn't be all positive. I kind of snuck in during a timeout and they didn't have a chance to boo me. But then once I touched the ball ... I guess that's a sign of respect." Eddie Jordan on Jeffries: "Jared was good for us. He needed that game." Antawn Jamison: "It's pretty much unheard of for all of your starters to get double figures. I'm not talking like 10, I'm talking like almost everyone had 20 points. That's a good sign. It shows you how we look for the open guy, we're unselfish, and that's the way basketball should be played. But there is also a second part of it. You have to find a way to do it on the other end." Jamison: "We can score with the best of them, but it really doesn't matter what you do offensively when you can't stop them on the defensive end. Against a team that shoots the ball the way they shoot it and moves the ball the way they move it ... your defense has to get stronger and stronger as the game progresses. It all comes down to defense." Jamison: "When you play a team like that you have to be clicking defensively. We had a lot of breakdowns, especially down the stretch, and they got some open looks." Larry Hughes: "They were hitting 3s and we were hitting 2s. That's not going to add up in our favor." Hughes on Stackhouse: "You always wish that guys are at their best. [But] I wish he didn't have a game like that against us." Brendan Haywood on Stackhouse: "Stack definitely looks like he was healthy, but he's really feeding off Nowitzki too. You look at the fact that now he doesn't have to create for himself, he can have stuff created for him. I think right now in his career, that's probably the best role for him."
