Dallas at Chicago (December 13) It was a series of small runs to open the game as Chicago scored the first 4 points and then Dallas scored the next 5 points and Chicago scored the next 6 points to go up 10-5 with 8:45 left. A jumper by Luol Deng gave the Bulls their largest lead of the quarter at 19-12 with 4:30 to go, but Dallas scored the next 7 points to tie the game with 2:30 remaining. Dallas would only score a free throw the rest of the quarter, but Chicago was only slightly better in scoring 4 points. Chicago led 23-20 after 1. Eddy Curry had 10 points. The game stayed close early in the 2nd quarter. Dallas led 29-27 with 9:20 remaining and Chicago scored the next 9 points to go up 36-29 with 7:35 left. But Chicago's largest lead in the quarter would be just 8 points and Dallas was able to whittle that down and tie the game at 40-40 with 2:15 left. Michael Finley drained a 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer to tie the game at 46-46 at the half. Chicago shot 59% FG in the 2nd quarter but also committed 8 turnovers. Chicago scored 7 straight points to go up 63-55 with 6:50 to go and held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. Finley drained another 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer. Chicago led 70-65 after 3. Dallas only shot 6-20 FG (but hit 2 3-pointers) and Chicago shot 11-17 FG in the 3rd quarter. Andres Nocioni hit a jumper and Kirk Hinrich nailed a 3-pointer to give Chicago their only double-digit lead at 75-65 with 10:30 remaining, but Dallas scored the next 4 points. 2 straight jumpers buy Finley gave Dallas an 83-82 lead with 4:50 to go, but Chicago scored the next 5 points to go back up. A 3-pointer by Ben Gordon gave Chicago a 90-84 lead with 3:10 left. But Josh Howard converted a 3-point play and then stole the ball. Erick Dampier got a putback to pull Dallas within 89-90 with 2:20 left. Both teams had misses and turnovers over the next minute and a half as neither team scored. Curry missed with 22 seconds left, but Tyson Chandler got the rebound, but instead of pulling it out, he went back up and missed the layup attempt and then made an even dumber error by intentionally fouling Finley when Finley got the rebound in the corner. Finley hit both free throws to give Dallas a 91-90 lead with 16 seconds left. But Gordon drained a 3-pointer from the corner to put Chicago up by 2 with 12 seconds to go. Dirk Nowitzki drove to the basket strong and was fouled. He hit the first free throw, but missed the 2nd, but Howard had snuck in and batted at the ball and his effort resulted in Dallas having the ball out of bounds with 7 seconds to go. Finley got the ball on the outside took a couple of dribbles in an nailed the free throw fade away jumper with 3.2 seconds left to give Dallas a 94-93 lead. Hinrich missed a shot at the buzzer. Dallas won 94-93. You can either call it Dallas stealing the win or Chicago giving away the win. Dallas played like crap the whole game and they wouldn't have had a chance at the win if it wasn't for a couple of bonehead plays by the young Bulls. Chicago shot 52.6% (41-78) FG including 4-18 3-pointers and Dallas shot 41.5% (34-82) FG including 5-17 3-pointers. Dallas did benefit from some friendly whistles and shot 21-29 FT while Chicago shot just 7-12 FT. Chicago hurt their cause with 24 turnovers. Michael Finley enjoyed his return to his hometown with 27 points, of which 10 came in the 4th quarter. Dirk Nowitzki struggled all game, but stayed aggressive which resulted in lots of trips to the free throw line (where he uncharacteristically missed 6). He had 21 points on 4-18 FG and 13-19 FT and 9 rebounds. Josh Howard was the only other Mav in double-digits with 16 points. He also had 10 rebounds - his 6th double-double of the season. Marquis Daniels was a thief with 8 steals. He also had 5 points (2-8 FG), 3 rebounds, and 4 assists. Erick Dampier had 9 points including 4-5 FG, 2 rebounds, and 3 blocks and 19 minutes, but did a very poor job of defending Eddy Curry. Darrell Armstrong had 6 points on 3-10 FG, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 turnovers in 24 minutes. Jerry Stackhouse did not play due to a sore right hand. Chicago lost despite having 6 players in double-digits. Eddy Curry had 20 points including 9-12 FG and 6 rebounds, but also had 5 turnovers. Luol Deng had 16 points and 7 rebounds. Kirk Hinrich had 12 points on 5-15 FG, 6 rebounds, and 9 assist. Tyson Chandler had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, but also had 5 turnovers. Ben Gordon had 14 points, 3 assists, and 5 turnovers. And Andres Nocioni had 12 points on 6-8 FG and 4 rebounds. Quotes Don Nelson: "What can I say, we were just lucky tonight. We didn't play well, but well enough to win. We struggled all night. We made a couple of shots at the end and guarded somebody at the end. I thought we would lose all the way until they made that 3. We just kept plugging and made a couple of shots at the end. I guess we'll win a couple a year like that and lose a couple. We're one of the best road teams. It was great to have Finley back, although he was not that great tonight. But he got it going in the 4th. Howard also is a great offensive rebounder. He was big for us all night especially in the 4th quarter." Dirk Nowitzki: "That's definitely one we should have lost. They made a lot of mistakes to keep us around all game long. At the end of the night they didn't box out on a free throw." Nowitzki: "But we will take it, maybe we just got a little lucky." Nowitzki on Finley's return: "We needed him. We needed another shooter back out there who can spread the defense, and make some big shots for us. He's been a huge lift for us." Nowitzki when someone commented 'Nice game': "Nice game? Which one were you watching?" Nowitzki on Curry's foul: "Maybe he thought they were down one. He's been in the league a while now. That's a mistake you just can't make." Michael Finley: "I think first and foremost we were fortunate to win. They made some costly turnovers. Those were youthful mistakes. At the end, I just got a good look and let it go." Finley on his shooting struggles during the game: "I wanted to stick with it. I didn't want to put my head down. I wanted to think about the shots I did make and keep that positive view in my head when I got opportunities to take another one." Finley on his game winner: "The way they defended the play, it turned into an option play, like football. When the defender made a mistake, the pass was there for me. I had enough time to reach the basket, so I took my time and got a good shot, and it went in." Finley on his game winner: "I knew I had enough time to either get to the basket, catch and shoot, or get a nice move in. I didn't want to rush it. I just took my time." Finley: "I don't remember ever making a game-winner here. I've had some shots that put the nail in the coffin, so to speak, but not one to win it at the buzzer." Finley on Chicago: "I've been watching them a lot lately. They have a lot of guys I played with during the summer. The last couple of games they might have lost but they competed for 48 minutes. Tonight they did the same and came out and played hard." Finley: "It is always fun winning here, and I would give up shots to get a win here. At home in front of friends and family, against the team I grew up watching, and with MJ's jersey in the rafters, it's always special." Darrell Armstrong: "We did steal it. It seemed like we didn't have our normal energy. But we made the shots and stops we had to. It showed the character of this team." Josh Howard on Chandler's defense at the free throw line: "I noticed all game he didn't pay much attention to me on the free throw line. He'd back up on the 2nd shot, so I just went for it and got the rebound." Marquis Daniels on his 8 steals: "I was just trying to anticipate a lot of things." Scott Skiles: "That was a tough loss. We played well most of the night, we played hard. We did not play very smart and that cost us. No question, we beat ourselves." Skiles on Curry's foul near the end: "Eddy said he did not know the time and score. The whole game we had trouble catching the ball, handling the ball, passing the ball. We just had a very difficult time passing from point A to point B. Having said that, we still should have won." Skiles on after Nowitzki missed free throw: "It probably went off Howard, but Bob Delaney felt it was a foul on Tyson, so rather than call a foul he just gave them the ball. Howard, 3 free throws in a row, beat us right in there and that was the only one he got. We kind of fell asleep there." Skiles on if they should have won: "No question, we beat ourselves. It is difficult to win when one player on the other team makes more free throws than your team shoots. Those are very difficult odds to overcome. We played very hard we just did not play very smart." Skiles: "Even after that we got a shot, we got the lead. We were not able to stop them. It may be hard for people to believe, but we do work on free throws, rebounding, and those situations." Skiles: "It was a bad loss. We are trying to win. We think we should win. From my seat it was a very bad loss. We made mistakes that are not NBA game winning type things. Plays get magnified because we fumbled the ball throughout the game. Still, Ben Gordon hit a big shot, we executed perfectly, and we had a shot to win." Kirk Hinrich on turnovers: "You can't do that. It does hurt. If a couple of those calls could have gone the other way, it would have helped. But we need to keep the focus on us and on what we need to do to win games. We can't turn it over that much, and we need to make plays down the stretch." Hinrich on turnovers: "We can't expect to win when we throw the ball away that many times." Hinrich: "We're not happy just because we played them close. We want to win." Hinrich on his last shot: "At first, I didn't think I had much time, and then both Finley and Daniels were flying at me. So I felt as if I didn't have any other choice but to give a head fake, otherwise they would have blocked it. So I still got one up, but it was off balance." Hinrich on if he felt the game was won after Gordon's 3-pointer: "Well, you hope so, but we didn't play that smart down the stretch." Hinrich on getting more calls: "We just have to keep playing. We have to go into game knowing the whistle probably isn't going to bounce our way, and be ready to fight through it." Hinrich on getting more respect: "I don't know. I'm trying to figure it out. Teams that are continuously in the playoffs and winning 50 or 60 games, they probably do get the benefit of the doubt. But the way everything was called, we still could have won the game. It's on us. It's not on the officials." Tyson Chandler: "But I failed to box out Josh Howard for a rebound late in the game." Antonio Davis on the free throw difference: "It makes me feel like the league and their officials are looking at us a certain way without giving us an opportunity to go out and play. You never want to say something like that happens. But that's just the nature of the beast. You automatically get labeled, and it's hard to shake that label. Right now, we just got to find a way to fight through it." Golden State led 33-22 after 1. Robinson had 13 points. Golden State shot 61% FG including 3-3 3-pointers and Dallas shot 43% FG. Golden State scored 5 straight points to go up 45-33 with 6:15 remaining, but Dallas then scored the next 7 points to pull within 40-45 with 4:45 to go - but that was as close as Dallas would get in the quarter. Golden State led 57-49 at the half. Mickael Pietrus had 10 points in the 2nd quarter. Dallas pulled within 56-61 with 10:30 remaining and Golden State then scored the next 9 points to go up 70-56 with 7:45 left. Golden State took their largest lead at 80-63 with 4:25 to go, but Darrell Armstrong scored the next 3 points and then Jerry Stackhouse scored the next 9 points to pull Dallas within 75-80 with 1:45 remaining. Golden State scored the last 4 points of the quarter to go up 88-77 after 3. Stackhouse had 19 points in the 3rd quarter. Golden State scored the first 5 points of the 4th quarter to lead 93-77 with 11:10 left, but Dallas then scored the next 11 points, including 9 points by Michael Finley, to pull within 88-93 with 8 minutes to go. But the Warriors were able to hang to a single-digit lead. 2 free throws by Dirk Nowitzki and a jumper by Finley pulled Dallas within 101-103 with 2:15 remaining, but Jason Richardson hit a jumper with 1:55 left. Dallas missed and Golden State turned the ball over and Armstrong drove for 2 to pull Dallas within 103-105 with 1:30 to go. The teams traded misses and Golden State ran the clock down. Robinson missed a 3-point attempt, but Richardson flew in and had the one-handed monster slam putback over Shawn Bradley to give Golden State a 107-103 lead with 23 seconds left. Dallas missed, but Bradley got the rebound and putback with 16 seconds to go. Troy Murphy was intentionally fouled and hit both free throws. Dallas missed and that was game (well, both teams did score 2 more points). Golden State won 111-107. It was a game Dallas' didn't deserve to win and this time they didn't. Unlike the Bulls, Golden State didn't make stupid mistakes down the stretch and were able to hang on to the win. Dallas came out sluggish and didn't turn it on until the 4th quarter - you have to play more than 1 quarter most nights. Dallas' defense stunk and Golden State took advantage by draining open shots. Repeatedly Speedy Claxton drove into the paint and too many players collapsed on him and he kicked out to the open outside shooters and they drained shots. For the game, Golden State shot 50% (43-86) FG including 9-20 3-pointers and Dallas shot 42.9% (39-91) FG including 4-13 3-pointers. Despite scoring 107 points, Dallas had just 10 assists. And despite Golden State playing without a true center, Dallas never took advantage of their size mismatch and were out-scored 46-42 in the paint. Just a poor outing by Dallas and a good outing by Golden State. The loss put Dallas' home record this season at a poor 7-6. Golden State had a number of strong performances and had 5 players in double-digits. Speedy Claxton played an all-around game and had 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 10 assists. Clifford Robinson led the way with his outside shooting with 25 points including 9-14 FG and 3-4 3-pointers. He also had 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. Troy Murphy had 20 points and 7 rebounds. Mickael Pietrus had a career best 20 points including 7-10 FG and had 6 rebounds. Jason Richardson was relatively quiet outside of his monster dunk, but had good numbers with 14 points, 8 rebounds including 5 offensive, 7 assists, and 3 steals. Mike Dunleavy was the only starter to struggle and had just 7 points including 3-11 FG and had 6 rebounds. Jerry Stackhouse exploded in the 3rd quarter and Michael Finley stepped up in the 4th quarter and Dirk Nowitzki couldn't buy a shot all night - and no one stepped up in the 1st half. Stackhouse was the high man with 27 points, with all but 4 points coming in the 2nd half. He also had 7 rebounds. 13 of Finley's 24 points came in the 4th quarter. He also had 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Nowitzki continued to struggle and only had 13 points including 3-13 FG and 6 rebounds. Josh Howard had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds including 7 offensive and had 3 steals. No other Mav was in double-digits. Erick Dampier struggled early and Don Nelson opted not to play his big man in the 2nd half and Dampier only played 7 minutes. Darrell Armstrong had 7 points including 3-10 FG and just 1 assist in 22 minutes. Jason Terry had 4 points and 2 assists in 14 minutes. And Marquis Daniels had 6 points and 1 assist in 20 minutes. That's just 4 assists from the guys playing point. Quotes Mike Montgomery on Richardson's putback dunk: "I get very gratified when he makes that play. Not as much the quality of the play as much as what it meant to us at the time. It was huge. We were struggling against the zone; Michael Pietrus got 1, Jason Richardson got 1 or 2, and that was what we needed. You have to offensively rebound against the zone. We weren't very good against the zone as far as movement. We got stagnant, but they do allow you to rebound the ball. Those guys were good enough and athletic enough to go in and rebound. That was huge." Montgomery: "That was great. These guys feel really good to be able to beat a quality team on the road like this really helps us. I think we are improving. We got pretty good play from a lot of people. Pietrus was good off the bench, and everybody we put in really helped us. I thought Speedy was great. Speedy really distributed the ball. Troy did a good job on Nowitzki. Nowitzki is the leading scorer in the league and he ends up with 13, so it was a good team win." Montgomery: "50%, 45% from 3, 76% from the line - that's all statistics we wouldn't have been able to talk about early in the season. I just think we're getting better, and they can sense we're getting better." Jason Richardson on his putback dunk: "It was like an exclamation mark that we were going to win this game. Tonight wasn't a scoring night for me. I had to do the dirty work - offensive rebounds, assists, defense. I did my thing and the other guys stepped up." Troy Murphy on Richardson's putback dunk: "He came flying in and just sat on [Bradley's] head. It was great. It was a hug play for us. Jason Richardson is the best dunker in the league. He came in and really made a big play for us." Murphy: "We've had some games in the 4th quarter where we haven't finished them off. I think our last game against Charlotte, when we came back in the 4th quarter, gave us some confidence and we were able to carry it over into this game." Clifford Robinson: "I just wanted to come out and be aggressive. My game is coming around and I'm shooting the ball a lot better. I'm just trying to play better." Robinson: "To come out and put that kind of effort throughout the game shows we are improving. To sustain that effort for 48 minutes and make plays down the stretch, it's a good time." Mickael Pietrus: "We had a great game. We shared the ball. Everybody enjoyed it. We are confident for the future. Now we go to New Orleans with a great win behind us, so we have to have the same focus and play the game the same way. We believed that we could win this basketball game, so we came out with our focus on trying to win this game. We did it and now we have to think about what is next." Don Nelson: "I guess you don't get lucky twice in a row. We deserved to lose this game. We are fortunate that we didn't lose the last 2. We competed and tried, but we didn't have much fuel tonight. This is our 3rd game in 4 days. It wasn't an easy game for us. I thought they played exceptionally well. They made the shots they needed to make. We have 3 much needed days off. We are going to use it as a building process and try to get where I think this team needs to be. Over the next 6-8 weeks, you'll find out who we are. It's a good schedule for us where we can build upon our team work and hopefully we will be healthy enough to have our rotation in order." Nelson: "Dampier has not played well the last few games. The matchup was tough. He had 3 quick fouls. We decided we would only play him when Foyle came into the game and he never appeared again. The zone was good with Bradley. He is our best zone player." Nelson on Nowitzki: "Dirk's beat up. He's had a tough go of it, but I appreciate him giving us what he can." Dirk Nowitzki on his injuries: "There's no excuse if I go on the court, I should compete. It's been a tough month and a half for us. We should be better." Nowitzki: "We have a lot of work to do at both ends of the floor. We're not looking great." Michael Finley: "You can't let games like this become habit. Teams like this we should dominate. But we gave them confidence and gave them a chance to win." Finley: "Games like this are becoming a habit. Giving teams that we should dominate confidence throughout the game and letting them make more of a game out of it. When you do that, you're more susceptible to losing those ball games." Finley: "We didn't run out of gas. We ran out of time." Finley: "At home, we just come out a little bit more relaxed. I don't know if it's the comfort of our own environment or what. We just don't have the [instinct] as we have on the road. That's something that hopefully we can turn around before the season gets away from us. We can't just show up and expect to win." Jerry Stackhouse: "We just got off to a slow start. We started to play a little bit in the 2nd half, but we can't afford to spot teams 15 and 20 points and expect to just turn it on. We know we have the ability to put a lot of points on the board pretty quickly, but we don't want to put ourselves in a bind like we did tonight. We've got to find a way to get it going a little earlier and not let teams get off to as good of a start as Golden State did tonight." Stackhouse: "You've got to give Golden State some credit too. They made shots and they made shots all night. They made key shots when they had to late in the game. Claxton and Cliff were big tonight. [Robinson is] a tough cover. He's almost like Dirk because he brings big guys off the floor. When we went zone, he still found some spots and hurt us." Stackhouse: "That's who I am. Obviously, this is a new role for me, being a 6th man. Coming off of [halftime] warmups, I had my juices flowing and I was ready to go. Whenever [Nelson] calls on me to come out in a starter's role, I'm going to make the most of it." Erick Dampier on his struggles: "I'm just trying to find ways to get myself going offensively. It's a totally different team for me [than the Warriors]. We've got a lot of guys that can put the ball in the basket, so I just try to make the best of it whenever I get the opportunity to." Jason Terry: "Golden State just played a good game, you've got to give them credit. We waited too long to turn it on. They came out right away. They were aggressive. You give a team like that, that's struggling confidence, in your building, they're going to beat you every night." Terry on playing 3 games in 4 nights: "No, this is a team that we still should have beat. We are home. We have to turn this thing around at home. We've lost 2 or 3 in a row at home. We definitely can't afford to drop these games at home. We've got to get some momentum and it starts with Saturday's game against Atlanta." Terry on using the 3 days off: "That's what we're going to have to do. We'll have to regroup and come back with some good energy against Atlanta. Atlanta's not going to lay down either. We're going to have to beat them and beat them into the ground."
