Michael Finley still remains out with his sprained ankle and the prediction for his return is again sometime this week. Word floating is that he is aiming for Thursday's game vs Seattle, but nothing definite. Detroit at Dallas (December 6) The team that couldn't shoot straight returned after a 2 game break (where they finally shot above 45% FG) and this time they left their defense behind too. Dallas started the game playing well with 4 assists in the first 5 minutes, but went away from the team game and only had 1 assist the rest of the quarter. Dallas was up 10-4 midway through the 1st quarter, but Detroit connected on 4 straight free throws to cut Dallas' lead down to 2. Dallas led 16-14 with 3:40 to go and Detroit scored the next 9 points. Detroit led 23-17 after 1. Detroit shot 47% FG and Dallas shot 33% FG. Josh Howard opened the 2nd quarter with a 3-pointer, but Detroit then went on an 8-2 run to go up 31-22 with 9:20 remaining. Detroit scored 5 straight points to take their largest lead at 46-33 with 3:25 left. Detroit led 49-39 at the half. For the half, Detroit shot 49% FG and Dallas shot 34% FG. Detroit led 51-42 with 10 minutes to go and scored the next 6 points to go up 57-42 with 9 minutes left. Richard Hamilton scored 4 straight points to give Detroit their first 20+ lead at 76-55 with 3:30 remaining. Detroit led 81-63 after 3. Hamilton had 13 points including 4-5 FG in the quarter. After Rasheed Wallace hit 2 free throws to open the 4th quarter, Dallas scored the next 7 points to pull within 70-83 with 9:30 left. But Detroit ended Dallas' run with consecutive 3-pointers and a hook shot by Elden Campbell gave Detroit a 91-70 lead with 8 minutes to go. Dallas had another run in them as the Mavs scored the next 9 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Jason Terry, to pull within 79-91 with 4:30 minutes left. But Detroit wasn't going to fold this night and had an answer for every point Dallas scored the rest of the way as Dallas would get no closer than 12 points. Detroit won 101-85. Pure and simple, Dallas was ice cold all night. Detroit did play good defense, but the Mavs were even missing open shots. Dallas had more success when they took the ball inside, but they did not do that enough in settling for outside shots that just weren't falling. It was the 7th time this season the Mavs shot under 40% FG and the 2nd worst shooting game of the season. Dallas shot 33.3% (30-90) FG including 3-21 3-pointers. Add to that Detroit out-rebounding Dallas 49-43 and it is easy to see why Detroit was the better team this night. Detroit shot 48.1% (38-79) FG including 5-14 3-pointers as Dallas' defense was also lacking. It was a balanced night for the Pistons as 5 players were in double-digits. Richard Hamilton took advantage of Dallas playing a smaller man on him (why, I don't know - it made no sense to have Jason Terry or Darrell Armstrong on him) and had 19 points. Chauncey Billups led the way with 24 points including 8-10 FT and 8 assists. Rasheed Wallace had 13 points and 6 rebounds. Tayshaun Prince had 12 points on 6-9 FG, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. You knew it was going to be a long night when Elden Campbell hit a long baseline jumper early in the game. He had 11 points and 6 rebounds. Ben Wallace enjoyed snagging the boards and had 15 rebounds, including 7 in the 1st quarter, to go with his 8 points. It was one of the ugliest 27 point performances you will ever see. Dirk Nowitzki was ice cold. He was successful in getting the bucket and/or the foul when he drove, but he simply did not do that enough for some strange reason. He shot 6-24 FG and 15-16 FT. He also had 8 rebounds. Josh Howard had 12 points and Jerry Stackhouse had 13 points. Erick Dampier had a double-double with 11 points including 5-7 FG and 14 rebounds including 6 offensive in playing 21 minutes (limited due to fouls). The guards for Dallas were not good. After having his best game of the season on Saturday, Jason Terry had a stinker with 5 points on 2-8 FG and 3 assists. Devin Harris only played 13 minutes as Don Nelson opted to go with his veterans and he missed all 3 shots he attempted and had 4 assists in 13 minutes. Darrell Armstrong started the 3rd quarter and had 7 points including 3-10 FG and 2 assists in 27 minutes. And Marquis Daniels had 4 points on 2-7 FG and 2 assists in 19 minutes. Quotes Larry Brown: "We had some moments. We still sometimes don't understand what it's like to play as a team as much as we need to. There were a lot of good things. Carlos Delfino did a great job in the 1st half. Elden Campbell gave us a huge lift. Lindsey Hunter was really solid. And we got a win. Ben Wallace rebounded. Overall, when you can win the last game of a road trip like we've had against a quality team, that's a good sign." Brown on defending Nowitzki: "You can't play him straight up. He was 2-11 in the 1st half, and then started driving and got to the line. We kept him outside a lot. That really helped us; and until the end, we didn't turn the ball over. When you get him out on the break, you can't guard him. This guy is so good. He can do so much. He is fun to watch." Richard Hamilton on his 3rd quarter: "The guys did a good job of getting me the ball when I was open. The big guys did a good job of setting screens and I just made the shots." Hamilton: "It was a good road trip. We want to continue to do like this. We've just got to get home now and take care of business." Chauncey Billups: "This was a huge game for us. The last game of a road trip is always the toughest. When you are playing against another elite team, you are looking forward to that. That's a team that is very offensive minded, and I thought our defense won the game for us. I thought Rasheed and Ben did a great job on Nowitzki, and that was the key." Billups: "We're regaining our form and playing the right way. This was one of our best games of the season. We dominated throughout against one of the better teams." Billups on Rasheed Wallace's defense on Nowitzki: "He played him physical and contested his shots. He has the same kind of length as Dirk. I thought that bothered him a little bit. When he wasn't playing Dirk, Ben was playing him and playing real physical with him. Taking things away and giving him different looks. He missed some shots and that was key. You can't beat them when he gets 35 or 40." Billups on Rasheed Wallace's defense on Nowitzki: "That's why we got him. That's why he makes the big bucks. We expect him to come up big in games like this and he knows that. We always put that responsibility on him and he takes it with no question." Ben Wallace: "I think we started to play the way we are capable of play in the Houston game. And we're starting to carry it over. This was a good win for us." Wallace on Nowitzki: "You just have to stay in front of him and make it as difficult as possible. You can't let him get layups early in the game because once he gets comfortable, he easily gets on a roll." Rasheed Wallace on defending Nowitzki: "A guy will get in his comfort zone if he hits his first couple of shots. You try to make it hard for him since 90% of their offense goes through him. It was a team job. Myself, Ben, Elden played him tough. And then, when we switched, Tayshaun and Chauncey and Rip played him. We just went out there and played. It seems to be getting better and better every game, but I'm not saying we are where we were last year." Tayshaun Prince: "We did a good job of helping each other on defense; really finding the open man and sharing the ball. You are going to have your spurts in every game where you take a couple bad shots or do a couple things bad on the defensive end. We just had to capitalize on the opportunities we had." Prince on defending Nowitzki: "We did a good job when he took jump shots of staying in his jersey. Rasheed is long and a big target to try and defend him. Everybody had their opportunities. He did a good job of getting to the free throw line. When he settled for jump shots, we did a good job of keeping a hand in his face." Don Nelson: "I felt very useless tonight. I couldn't do much to help the team. They couldn't make any shots and there's only so much you can do at that point. They do that to a lot of teams, not just us. We will just have to regroup. We have another game tomorrow night. We kept hanging in there and fighting, but you can't shoot 33% against the World Champs and expect to get a win." Nelson: "Nowitzki is human. It may not seem like it the way he's been playing lately. He can have bad nights as well as good nights. They did a very good job on him." Nelson on the shooting woes: "There isn't a whole lot you can do except substitutions and try to get your team positive and keep playing hard. Didn't matter what we ran, we couldn't make them and there weren't many open shots." Dirk Nowitzki: "It was frustrating because I had a lot of good looks. I kept shooting because everyone needs me to do that and they told me to do that, but I was cold." Nowitzki: "I had a lot of good looks. A lot of 1 or 2 dribbles and up, the in-between game, that is my game. I kept on shooting. That's what the team needs me to do and that's what everyone told me to do. It was a frustrating night for me." Nowitzki: "We were cold from the field. We were all frustrated." Jason Terry: "We're still a good team. We just didn't come out and play our game, our style of play. Detroit did a great job of creating the tempo they wanted to play and they were very aggressive. We had to play more physical than they did and we didn't do that tonight." Terry: "It tells you for us to win, we have to play our style. Detroit was more aggressive on both ends of the floor." Terry: "They were just executing their offense. It was big because we were trying to get back into it. Every time we would score, they'd come down and score. Even when we didn't score, they came down and scored. It made it hard for us to come back." Terry: "We never could put a run together. We usually get on a streak and that didn't happen tonight. Credit them for not allowing that to happen." Devin Harris: "They pretty much beat us in every aspect of the game tonight." Harris: "Hopefully we can learn from a team like this and how they play and how they perform. Hopefully we can insert it to how we like to play as well as the way we like to run." Ref Joey Crawford, in his first game officiating against Dallas this season - and hopefully it will be a long time before he has his 2nd, made his impact early in the game in tossing Don Nelson 90 seconds into the game. Nelson got the first T for complaining about a non-call (Alan Henderson was actually fouled twice on the play with no call) and then got the 2nd for calling Crawford an a-hole. For the 3rd straight game a team jumped out to an 8-2 lead, this time Minnesota with 9:50 left and the Wolves would hold a small lead (no larger than 7 points) the rest of the quarter. Minnesota led 28-22 with 1:15 remaining and Dallas closed the quarter by scoring the last 6 points, capped by a 3-point play by Henderson as the quarter ended. The game was tied 28-28 after 1. Dallas was still shooting poorly and Minnesota was shooting above 50%, but the Mavs were more aggressive on the boards and out-rebounded Minnesota 17-7. Eddie Griffin opened the 2nd quarter with a 3-pointer, but Dallas then scored the next 7 points to go up 35-31 with 9:20 remaining. Dallas scored 7 straight points to take their largest lead of the half at 44-35 with 4:35 to go. Minnesota then went on a 9-1 run, with 7 points by Wally Szczerbiak, to pull within 44-45 with 1:35 left. Darrell Armstrong nailed a 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer, but the officials waived it off after reviewing the replay - about as close as a call as you can get. Dallas led 50-46 at the half. Dallas shot 38% FG and Minnesota shot 45% FG in the half, but Dallas out-rebounded Minnesota 32-18. Dallas' poor shooting and high rebounding continued in the 3rd quarter. Kevin Garnett scored the first 4 points of the quarter, but Dallas then scored the next 4 points. A 3-pointer by Szczerbiak pulled Minnesota within 53-54 with 10 minutes left, but Dallas then scored then next 7 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Josh Howard, to go up 61-53 with 8:15 remaining. Dirk Nowitzki converted a 3-point play to give Dallas their first double-digit lead at 67-57 with 3 minutes to go, but Griffin answered with a 3-pointer and the Wolves kept hanging around. Dallas led 71-64 after 3. Nowitzki had 12 points in the 3rd quarter. Garnett picked up 2 fouls in the first 1 1/2 minutes of the 4th quarter and had to sit with 5 fouls - Dallas led by 8 points when he went out. A 3-pointer by Griffin pulled Minnesota within 71-76 with 8:45 left. Dallas then scored the next 6 points to go up 82-71 with 6:35 remaining - Garnett returned to the game with 6:50 left. After 2 free throws by Garnett, Nowitzki swished a rainbow fade-away 3-pointer from the corner over a defender - about as pretty as a shot as you'll see, Garnett got a layup, and Nowitzki faked and Trenton Hassell fouled him and Nowitzki hit the tough jumper and then converted the extra free throw to give Dallas an 88-75 lead with 5 minutes to go. Minnesota scored the next 3 points, but Dallas wouldn't fold this night (like they did in the last Minnesota game) and had a score for each Minnesota bucket the rest of the way. Minnesota pulled within 93-84 with 1:35 left and Dallas missed on their shot, but Darrell Armstrong came from behind to knock the ball away from Sam Cassell as Cassell was dribbling and Jerry Stackhouse then drained the long jumper with 45 seconds left to give Dallas a comfortable 11 point lead at 95-84. Dallas won 97-87. The team that couldn't shoot straight found a way to win despite missing shots galore. The key to this game was rebounding, specifically offensive rebounding. Dallas shot under 40% FG for the 8th time this season in shooting just 38.9% (35-90) FG, but had 24 offensive rebounds. They converted those offensive rebounds into 24 points. Dallas out-rebounded Minnesota 54-35 including 24-8 offensive. Minnesota also missed a number of shots in shooting 44.2% (34-77) FG. Dallas also took the ball inside a lot and had 42 points in the paint (Minnesota had 36 points in the paint). Avery Johnson got his first coaching win in coaching all but the first 93 seconds [though the win technically still goes on Don Nelson's record]. As usual, Dirk Nowitzki was the high man with 34 points. He was quiet in the 1st half with 11 points and turned it on the in 2nd half. He also had 7 rebounds. He played 44 minutes the night after playing 41 minutes. But it was a team win as 3 players had double-doubles. Josh Howard missed about 5 minutes during the 2nd quarter after being clipped across the bridge of the nose by an inadvertent elbow that left him woozy. He had 13 points (though only shot 4-14 FG) and 12 rebounds. Alan Henderson played excellent and had season highs with 11 points and 15 rebounds including 9 offensive. He got the starting nod with Marquis Daniels being out. Erick Dampier had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jerry Stackhouse is still struggling mightily with his shooting and shot 3-12 FG, but did have 12 points. Darrell Armstrong got the starting nod as Devin Harris fell off the bench due to his recent struggles and the coaches opting to got with vets (Harris did not play). He had 5 points including 2-7 FG and 6 assists and the clinching steal late in the game. Jason Terry chipped in 11 points and 4 assists in splitting the point guard minutes with Armstrong. Shawn Bradley (6 minutes) was the only other Mavs to play as coach Johnson went with a tight 8-man rotation. Kevin Garnett almost matched Nowitzki with points and spent most of the game guarding Nowitzki. KG had 32 points including 12-19 FG and 12 rebounds. 17 of his points came in the 4th quarter. 13 of Wally Szczerbiak's 18 points came in the 1st half. Eddie Griffin was the only other Wolf in double-digits with 14 points including 3-5 3-pointers and had 7 rebounds. All 8 of Sam Cassell points came in the 1st half. He shot 3-13 FG and had 5 assists. Quotes Don Nelson on his ejection: "The playoff game [vs San Antonio were Crawford tossed him], I didn't say anything. This time I did. I have no complaints." Avery Johnson: "Great job tonight. I'm really proud of our defense. That's the type of defense I know we can play. Everybody really played great, but we had some guys with outstanding performances. ... A lot of things that I didn't do well in my first game, after I got my coaching lecture, Coach thought I did them a lot better tonight. But you still have to make shots. Guys have to get stops. We didn't win because I did a great coaching job. The guys played pretty well." Johnson: "You have to tip your hat to Alan Henderson. He came out and started for us tonight and got a double-double. Alan does so much for us. When he can guard an opponent's best scorer, that frees Dirk up offensively. Alan really did a lot for us tonight that didn't show up on the stat sheet. Also, Josh being able to do what he did against Sam Cassell tonight is really special, because I think Sam Cassell is the real key to their team. Garnett is Garnett; you can't stop him. That's why Josh did such an incredible job." Dirk Nowitzki: "We knew we had to step it up defensively and the biggest key was our rebounding." Nowitzki: "I wasn't missing a lot in warmups and that gave me confidence. I had a good feeling about the whole game." Nowitzki on Garnett: "Kevin's fun to play against. He's so competitive. He's one of the best in the league." Erick Dampier: "As long as we put something like that together every night we'll be in a lot of games." Dampier on blowing a large lead in the last game vs Minnesota: "The last 5 minutes we were definitely thinking about that last game. That was a game we should have won. We didn't want to be in that situation again." Jerry Stackhouse: "It was a great win with a little bit of a revenge factor. We let them steal one from us at home, so we wanted to get one back from them. We sustained their run at the end of the 1st half. Dirk was great again tonight, and in the 2nd half we supported him. ... In the 2nd half we tried running down early, and if we couldn't do that, we just got into our pick-and-rolls and that worked well for us tonight." Stackhouse: "We found out something about their team, that with the pick-and-rolls, we got them all out of whack and their rotations aren't good. If you keep the ball on one side of the floor, they are able to lock in and be pretty good defensively. You keep them on the move with pick-and-rolls, get their big guys on rotations, and then you can sneak in and get some offensive rebounds - and that's what we were able to do." Josh Howard: "I just think guys were really aggressive. We wanted to finish our defense with a defensive rebound. We've just got to stay aggressive all game." Howard: "Working the offense is something we always try to focus on, and I think the guys did a great job doing that tonight." Howard: "I've never seen [24 offensive rebounds] before. I think guys are pretty much feeling each other out when it comes to shooting, and are able to tell when it's coming off and where it's going. I just think it's time with people." Howard: "The guys were aggressive, that's pretty much the answer. Every guy stayed with it the whole game." Shawn Bradley: "That's an impressive win." Alan Henderson: "They're an excellent team and it's always hard to win on the road. If we can play like this consistently, we could have a special season." Henderson: "I got some extra minutes tonight. I just tried to get my hands on [loose balls], get a tip, keep it alive." Flip Saunders: "I wish we could sugar coat it, but we got pummeled tonight. When you hold a team to 38 or 39%, there are a lot of missed shots - some 55 missed shots, without free throw situations. You can't be in a 50-50 chance of getting a defensive rebound. We were a little slow. I don't know if it's because we have been on a long road trip. It's not an excuse, though. We're right back at it and play tomorrow on the road." Saunders on the rebounding: "It was too big of a discrepancy. Their strengths are their wings and their power forwards getting to the glass. We needed to box out. We didn't put bodies on guys. I had a concern before the game, with KG guarding Dirk. He's our best rebounding player and having him out in the middle of the floor could cause some problems for us." Saunders: "We were a half-step slow tonight. Their strength is Howard, Henderson, their wings, getting to the glass. You have to box 'em out. We didn't put enough bodies on 'em." Saunders: "[Cassell] had foul trouble and they made a switch and put Howard on him. We just didn't do a good job. We had bad turnovers. Every time we went to [Garnett], he had a layup. We got away from that. We needed to play through him. Hopefully we can learn from that." Kevin Garnett: "Very tough. I don't even know where to start. They just totally beat us up on the boards. That's what we usually do to teams. It's hard when you've got Alan and Dampier and Howard coming in and keeping the ball alive. It's hard to keep those guys off the boards. Alan Henderson, that's all he does is rebound. They had 3 guys with double figures in rebounds? It's hard to win a game like that." Garnett: "[Nowitzki] hit some big shots. That's what he's been doing all year. You can't really get near him. ... It makes it difficult to guard him sometimes. Dirk's playing well. He's in a nice groove." Garnett: "Fortunately, we've been in a little bit of a groove. Then we come home and have this happen. We've just got to jump back on the saddle, though. We'll watch some film on the plane, get some rest, and get ready for Philly." Garnett on losing Sprewell: "Spree is like the life of this team. He gives us that surge and that energy. He's not just one-dimensional. He doesn't just score or do one particular thing. He can guard people, he can get feisty, he can hit 3s, he can hit big shots. We missed all that tonight. But I felt that Trenton played really well. We just didn't contain them. ... [Sprewell] took his lumps like a man and took it on the chin. We understand, as a veteran team, this can't be a distraction - and it's not. It will be good to see him tonight on the plane." Wally Szczerbiak: "It does [hurt], especially [because] Dirk ended up with 34. Maybe if someone else could have bothered him and heckled him and he still would have had 34 and we could have had Kevin down low, where we needed him on the boards. I think we maybe could have made that adjustment. But we just didn't play well. No excuses." Eddie Griffin: "They just did a good job on the boards. They took a lot of long shots, so there were a lot of long rebounds. But they just did a better job on the boards tonight. ... I wouldn't say it was a lack of effort. We were trying to do our best on the boards. They were just sending more people to the boards than we were. We were out-numbered down there. It was just a frustrating game." Griffin on losing Sprewell: "It was a big difference not having Spree. That's another option for us. He gives us scoring, he's one of our best 1-on-1 players and one of our best shooters. So it was different not having him out there."
