Prior to the Milwaukee game, Dallas activated Pavel Podkolzin and placed Jerry Stackhouse on IR with a strained right groin. LA Lakers at Dallas (March 10) Dallas had Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley back from injury, but were without Don Nelson as he missed the first of 3 games to attend to his wife, who is recovering from surgery. The game stayed close in the 1st quarter with neither team shooting that well and neither led by more than 4 points. The Lakers led 21-20 after 1. The shooting remained poor and the game continued to stay close with Dallas' largest lead being 4 points and the Lakers' largest lead being 1 point. Dallas led 45-41 at the half. Alan Henderson had a great half with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Dallas shot 40% FG and 11-13 FT and the Lakers shot 42% FG and 4-4 FT. The Lakers pulled within 46-48 with 10:30 left and consecutive 3-pointers by Michael Finley kicked off a 12-2 run to put Dallas up 60-48 with 7:10 to go. The Lakers used an 8-2 run to pull within 70-73 with a minute remaining. Dallas led 74-70 after 3. Finley opened the 4th quarter with a 3-pointer, but Tierre Brown answered with a 3-pointer and then hit another 3-pointer following a jumper by Brian Grant to put the Lakers up 78-77 with 10 minutes to go and the game stayed close the rest of the way. Chucky Atkins nailed a 3-pointer to give the Lakers a 92-88 lead with 3:45 remaining. The teams traded buckets and Jason Terry hit a 3-pointer to pull Dallas within 93-94 with 2:20 left. The Lakers missed, Dallas missed, the Lakers turned it over, Dallas missed on 4 attempts, and Kobe Bryant got a layup with 1:10 to go. After a Dallas timeout, Dirk Nowitzki missed with a minute left. Jumaine Jones drove for a layup off the break and missed, but Bryant flew in for the putback dunk to put the Lakers up 98-93 with 57 seconds remaining. Josh Howard got a layup 10 seconds later and Lamar Odom missed with 25 seconds to go. Nowitzki missed on a 3-point attempt (actually got clipped on the arm with no call and Bryant got credited with a block) and Dallas intentionally fouled Atkins, whose free throws were the final points of the game. The Lakers won 100-95. No whining about the refs in this game - Dallas didn't deserve to win with their ice cold shooting throughout the game. To make matters worse, they shot 1-10 FG over the last 2 minutes of the game. Their lack of execution gave Dallas the loss they deserved. For the game, Dallas shot a mere 36.7% (33-90) FG including 5-20 3-pointers. The Lakers shot 45.3% (39-86) FG including 7-16 3-pointers. Dallas shot 24-29 FT and the Lakers shot 15-21 FT. Dallas did do a good job rebounding, but they simply could not make shots. Dallas out-rebounded the Lakers 51-45 including 17-11 offensive. Both teams were clean with the ball as the Lakers had 11 turnovers and Dallas had 8 turnovers. Kobe Bryant led the way for the Lakers with 36 points on 14-22 FG and 8-10 FT and 9 rebounds. He scored 12 points in the 4th quarter. Lamar Odom had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. He also had 7 assists. Chucky Atkins had 13 points including 4-11 FG and 3 assists. Chris Mihm had 10 points on 5-7 FG and 7 rebounds. Tierre Brown had 10 points in 16 minutes off the bench. Dallas wasted a wonderful game by Alan Henderson. Henderson had 10 points including 4-6 FG, 17 rebounds including 7 offensive, and 3 blocks. The 3 starters of Jason Terry, Michael Finley, and Dirk Nowitzki combined to shoot a mere 15-50 FG (30%). Nowitzki had 25 points on 6-19 FG and 13-15 FT to go with 11 rebounds and 4 assists. Finley had 12 points including 4-14 FG and 3 rebounds. Terry had 11 points on 5-17 FG, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Josh Howard had a solid outing with 18 points and 10 rebounds including 6 offensive, but got in foul trouble and fouled out near the end of the game. He twisted his ankle during the game, but did return after getting the ankle re-taped. Shawn Bradley started and missed both of his shots and had 4 rebounds and 2 blocks in 13 minutes. Marquis Daniels had 12 points. Keith Van Horn had 7 points and 2 rebounds in 20 minutes. Darrell Armstrong missed all 3 of his attempts and had 1 rebound and 2 assists in 9 minutes. Quotes Frank Hamblen: "Well it's a big win for us to start this trip against a tough team like Dallas. I thought our guys really played well. We set a goal to hold them to 90 points or under. To start the game we were right on target the 1st half, but they're too good a team. I was hoping to hold them under 100 and our guys did. I give our guys a lot of credit. They fought and fought and fought." Hamblen: "We really played as a team." Hamblen on Bryant: "Kobe was magnificent, made the right decisions when he was doubled. He's got the day off if he wants it." Hamblen on Brown: "He made some big shots when they doubled Kobe. I told him at the shoot around today that we're going to give him more minutes." Kobe Bryant: "It's a big win. I don't think anyone expected us to win this game except for ourselves. We came out and really played well. We executed and this is the way you want to start a road trip. We have a long haul ahead of us. We have to now move on and take this experience and carry it over to the next game." Lamar Odom on the win: "It's big to keep everyone's confidence up." Tierre Brown: "The last couple of games, Kobe was getting real hot and aggressive early, and guys just got wrapped up in giving him the ball. In those 2nd halves, teams were strategizing on that - they were getting the ball out of Kobe's hands, and [our] guys were not really in rhythm, because they hadn't been touching the ball. So I think Kobe did a good job tonight of picking his shots and getting other guys involved." Avery Johnson: "It was a tough night for us and a tough finish. The 2nd half, the defense really let us down. They gave them close to 60 points in the 2nd half after a pretty good effort defensively in the 1st. You have to take your hat off to not only the Lakers, but Kobe Bryant, he did it all for them. He got other guys involved in the 2nd half. We thought we were going pretty good in the 1st half when he was the only guy in double-figures. Odom, Atkins, Tierre Brown all came alive." Johnson: "We couldn't drop it in the ocean tonight. We are getting some guys back that we wanted back, but they were just a little rusty tonight and it's going to take some time. I would rather have them back shooting bad then have them sitting in street clothes." Johnson: "We couldn't drop it in the ocean. They were a desperate team and it showed. When we play [that way], we tend to play better." Johnson: "We better start playing like a desperate team. When we play with that desperate mentality, and a healthy sense of fear and respect for our opponent, we tend to play better. We haven't played well when we're prosperous." Johnson: "We'll get it together. We had some guys that just missed some shots that they normally wouldn't miss. The guys played hard. We got 6 guys in double-figures. We out-rebounded them. We shot 29 free throws, they shot 21. I don't know if we ran out of gas in the 4th quarter or what. This is a very disappointing game." Johnson on defending Bryant: "There's a couple different things you could do: you could trap him to try and get the ball out of his hands or you could try to play him one-on-one. We tried a little bit of everything. We tried zone, we tried trapping him early, trapping him late. Nothing seemed to work in the 2nd half." Johnson on Henderson: "When we get 10 points and 17 rebounds from him, we think we're going to win the game." Dirk Nowitzki on his last 3-point attempt: "I thought I got fouled." Josh Howard: "It was big that we didn't hit any shots late. Also, we didn't hit the glass hard enough to get those extra shots. The Lakers fought hard and beat us in a good game. At the start of the 4th quarter, we switched up our defense a little bit, but their guys got some open shots and knocked them down. That's what you have to do if you want to win games like these." Howard: "It just slipped away from us. We just have to go out on the road and be mentally focused now. We've got a tough test tomorrow night - Michael Redd's a good scorer, but it's just another job and I'll do what I can to stop him." Howard on the team's recent struggles: "As of right now, it's a funk that we don't need to be in. We need to get out of it quick." Marquis Daniels: "We just missed some big shots down the stretch, but that's part of basketball. We just have to learn from that and concentrate some more on our shots. We did what we wanted to do, get the ball out of Kobe's hands, but other guys stepped up and made big shots for them. Tierre Brown made some big 3s for them, Jumaine Jones - those guys made some big shots for them tonight. We were counting on them missing their shots if we could get the ball away from Kobe." Daniels: "We can't dwell on this one too long. We have another great scorer in Michael Redd. Desmond Mason too. We have to come out and play hard. We need to stay focused and get it back." The injury bug hit yet again Josh Howard tried to play on the sprained left ankle, which he injured during the Lakers' game, but only lasted 3 minutes before leaving due to pain and did not return. It was a tight game throughout and both teams held small leads in the 1st quarter. Milwaukee scored 6 straight points to go up 28-22 with 1:45 remaining. Milwaukee led 30-28 after 1. Michael Redd and Joe Smith had 9 points each. Milwaukee held a small lead for most of the 2nd quarter (1 tie) and scored 7 straight points to take the largest lead of the game at 56-49 with 2:30 to go, but Dallas scored the next 6 points. Milwaukee led 59-57 at the half. Milwaukee shot 47.5% FG and 16-22 FT and Dallas shot 49% FG and 8-9 FT. The theme of the game continued in the 3rd quarter as the game stayed tight and neither team could put together a big run. A jumper by Michael Finley and a dunk by Shawn Bradley off a nice feed by Devin Harris gave Dallas the largest lead of the quarter at 86-81 with 35 seconds left. Dallas led 88-83 after 3. Milwaukee scored the first 5 points of the 4th quarter to tie the game at 88-88 a minute in. Dallas did scored the next 4 points, but a jumper by Maurice Williams and 3-pointer by Redd gave the Bucks a 93-92 lead with 7:30 remaining. The game stayed close and the teams traded leads a couple of times over the next few minutes. A 3-point play by Smith put Milwaukee up 102-99 with 3:40 remaining, but Finley answered with a 3-pointer to tie the game. The teams traded misses, Redd got a layup, and then Dirk Nowitzki converted the 3-point play to put Dallas up 105-104 with 2:20 left. Milwaukee missed, Jason Terry hit a jumper, and Redd hit 2 free throws to pull the Bucks within 106-107 with 1:30 to go. Nowitzki missed a jumper, but Marquis Daniels got the rebound on the baseline and took the ball back up for the layup with 1:10 remaining. Redd answered with a jumper at the other end to again cut Dallas' lead down to 1 point with a minute left. Finley missed as the shot clock was running down, but Redd also missed at the other end and Nowitzki was intentionally fouled with 18 seconds to go. He hit both free throws to put Dallas up 111-108. After a Milwaukee timeout, Dallas defended for a 3-pointer, so Desmond Mason had no resistance in getting the dunk with 16 seconds left. Dallas moved the ball around to kill more time off the clock (with a nice save by Harris off a high Nowitzki pass) before the Bucks were able to intentionally foul with 8 seconds remaining. Terry missed the 1st free throw and hit the 2nd and it was a 2 point Dallas lead. After a Milwaukee timeout, the Bucks got the ball into Michael Redd and Darrell Armstrong did a good job of keeping in front of Redd defensively, which prevented a drive, and Redd eventually rose and missed the mid-range jumper and Nowitzki batted the rebound out, and Finley batted the ball, and a Buck picked up the ball and fired a shot, but the buzzer sounded as the player picked up the ball (the shot missed anyway). Dallas won 112-110. It was a tight game throughout and Dallas was simply happy to come away with the win with their resent struggles. The largest lead in the game was just 7 points and there were 13 lead changes and 17 ties. The largest lead in the 4th quarter was just 4 points and there were 4 lead changes and 4 ties in the quarter. Pure and simple, when Dallas shots well, the team wins. Dallas is 15-0 this season when they shot 50% or better. Dallas shot 50.6% (44-87) FG including 5-9 3-pointers. Milwaukee shot 45.9% (39-85) FG including 6-15 3-pointers. The Bucks had some home cooking as they shot 26-32 FT and Dallas shot 19-24 FT (Dirk Nowitzki, who is averaging 9.5 attempts per game, did not get to the line for the first time in the game until almost 29 minutes had passed). Dallas won the rebounding war in out-rebounding Milwaukee 46-36 including 16-11 offensive. It was again a clean game as Dallas had 8 turnovers and Milwaukee had 13 turnovers. A day after Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley, and Jason Terry combined to shot a mere 30% FG, the 3 combined to shoot 55% FG. Nowitzki had 29 points including 10-21 FG and 3-4 3-pointers, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. Terry had 28 points including 11-17 FG and 5 assists. Finley had 19 points including 8-15 FG and 5 rebounds. Alan Henderson started and had a quiet night with 4 points on 2-2 FG, 2 offensive rebounds, and 2 assists in 20 minutes. Marquis Daniels played 33 minutes due to Josh Howard's injury and had 13 points and 6 rebounds. Devin Harris had a nice outing in the return to his hometown and played 25 minutes (surprising because he DNPed the previous game). He had 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists in 25 minutes. Shawn Bradley also contributed and was aggressive in going for some rebounds. He had 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 24 minutes. Keith Van Horn had a poor outing with just 4 points on 2-7 FG, but did have 4 rebounds and 4 assists in 16 minutes. Twice he blew fast break buckets, once with simply missing a layup and the other time in getting the layup attempt blocked (he should have gone for a dunk both times as even if he missed he would have likely been fouled). Darrell Armstrong only played 2 minutes and had no stats, but had the key defensive play at the end that resulted in Michael Redd not getting an easy or close shot to try to tie the game. Michael Redd led the way for Milwaukee with 33 points including 8-10 FT and 7 rebounds. Desmond Mason had 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Joe Smith had a nice outing with 19 points including 7-9 FG and 9 rebounds in 30 minutes. Maurice Williams couldn't shoot, but did other things. He had 10 points on 4-13 FG, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists. Dan Gadzuric had 7 points including 3-4 FG and 6 rebounds. Erick Strickland had 9 points in 14 minutes and Zaza Pachulia had 6 points including 1-6 FG and 6 rebounds in 21 minutes. Quotes Avery Johnson: "It was a really terrific effort tonight. Both teams really laid it out on the court tonight. You really have to tip your hat off to Milwaukee. They really fought hard. I am really proud of our guys tonight to come back, get here at 4 in the morning, no shoot around, not much sleep. It was a very, very, very, very, emotional loss against the Lakers. I still haven't recovered from that one. We won a game that was a must win for us. Everybody contributed tonight. I don't like games when we get 110 points scored on us, but right now without Damp, without Josh, to come in here and win this game under these circumstances, I'm proud of the team." Johnson "I am really proud of how our guys played tonight, they really fought hard and had terrific effort tonight. Dirk was just Dirk tonight, and we put the old man in there and he came through for us [Armstrong defending Redd at the end]. He bodied up Michael, and Michael took an off-balanced shot and that's all you can hope for." Johnson: "I don't like games where we give up 110 points, but right now, we're scrambling. To win this game without Josh Howard and without Erick Dampier, we had to have some serious focus. And I hope we continue playing like that because that's the way everybody's playing against us." Johnson on Nowitzki and Finley: "2 warriors. They gave us 40 minutes each, both of them coming off some injuries. They did a good job of being captains tonight." Johnson: "Devin Harris gave us 25 quality minutes - 9 points, 4 assists, 2 steals. We needed those minutes from him tonight. We try to keep him off balance. Sometimes when he knows he is going to play a lot of minutes he doesn't function very well. Tonight, we gave no indication that he was going to participate in this game. We called him, called him early and we even started him in the 3rd quarter." Johnson: "Jason Terry really carried us during a lot of stretches of the game offensively. We called his number and he responded. Jason carries the load for us. That is what we expect from him." Jason Terry: "We didn't play mad, but we did play determined. We are just trying to find a way. Find a way to win ball games and we did that tonight. It could have easily gone the other way. It is what it is, it's a win and we'll take it but we know we have a lot of work to do. It was a win for us. We have a tough team in Minnesota coming up next so we have to stay focused." Terry: "We didn't play mad. But we played determined, which we have to do while we're in this defensive funk." Terry: "We are giving away way too many transition points, easy baskets in the lane, late to help each other. We are really losing our focus on the defensive end. We are going to work it out and get back to defending like we were early in November." Terry: "We executed well in the 4th quarter and got stops on the other end. That is what helped us get the victory." Terry: "You've got teams battling for playoff position. We're trying to hold our ground. It's desperation out there. Every play counts, every free throw, every box out, every blocked shot. Everything is on the line." Terry on Nowitzki: "It was huge to have our MVP back on the floor, causing mismatches, and giving us a big lift when we needed it." Josh Howard on his ankle: "I wanted to see what little I could do, but there was just too much pain. But I'm hoping to play Sunday." Devin Harris: "It's good to be back home. I am glad to see so many Wisconsin shirts out there and Dallas shirts. It feels good to come back home and win of course." Harris: "Josh going down, not being able to go, we were short handed as it is. They kind of threw me in the fire and I am glad I could help the team out the way I did." Harris on his block and highlight 3-point play: "What we wanted to do was chase [Redd] off his jump shots. I was fortunate enough to get back in the play where I could get a piece of the shot and finish on the other end." Terry Porter on the last shot: "A little bit off balance, not the shot I'd probably want, I'd rather have [Redd] try to drive it." Porter: "Our inability to execute things down the stretch cost us this game. The little things, the intangibles. And that's disappointing, we talked about it and we just didn't get it done." Porter on the bench: "Just a bad shooting night. I think for the most part, guys had good looks, they just didn't make them, that happens." Porter on if there was a silver lining: "No, it's just a loss. We just had too many breakdowns. Things we talked about down the stretch of this game. We talked about rebounding. Joe did a great job of contesting Dirk." Michael Redd on if there was a silver lining: "At this point in the season, it's a loss. We've been playing well in close games all year long. We've been in close games all year long. We're still encouraged even though we lost. We still played fairly well against a tough team. But at this point, it's a loss. We need to get wins." Redd on his last shot: "We did what we wanted to do. Give Dallas credit, they made plays, they made shots, they made free throws." Redd on his last shot: "Great look. I shot right over him. Just didn't make it. I wouldn't have got past him. He had help. That was the best shot I could take at that moment. I made the previous couple - that one just rolled in-and-out. To me it was a good shot, a great shot." Redd: "That's a tough team, a tough tandem. You have a 7-footer who can shoot and handle the ball the way he does and Michael Finley to complement him so well. They have a great future together." Redd on Terry: "He came out aggressive, took advantage of the pick-and-roll game and made big shots for them. He just had a huge game." Joe Smith: "They're capable of spreading defenses and making defenses adjust to them. Especially when they get it going, they're a tough matchup for any team." Smith on Nowitzki: "Just his size and the way he shoots the ball. You rarely come across a big man who can shoot the ball the way he does. We did whatever we could to try to change up defensive schemes to slow those guys down, but in the end we weren't able to make the stops we needed." Smith: "When you have a team that, with the weapons they have, they know their role, they know the game, they're always going to be a tough matchup." Smith on Milwaukee's offense: "I think we did a pretty good job, we scored 100 plus, that's always a good offensive night. Against a team like Dallas, it's not just about what you do offensively. You have to make stops because all the weapons that they have, they can pretty much outscore anybody."
