The Mavs have a new feature on their website where they describe (including an animationed diagram) a couple of offensive plays that the up coming opponent likes to run. You can see them at: http://www.nba.com/mavericks/matchup/scouting_reports_archive_2005.html Dallas activated Rawle Marshall and placed Marquis Daniels on IL with a strained neck prior to the Sacramento game. Daniels also missed the Seattle game due to the injury. Dallas activated Jerry Stackhouse and placed Rawle Marshall on IL prior to the Seattle game. Stackhouse plyed 16 minutes in his first game of the season. Dallas at Sacramento (December 22) Sacramento was playing their first game without Peja Stojakovic and Bonzi Wells. Marquis Daniels sat out this game as he aggravated his strained neck during the Lakers game [watching Bryant go by him too many times?]. The game was tied at 12-12 with 7 minutes to go and Dallas went on a 19-5 run, capped by a slam dunk by Keith Van Horn, to go up 31-17 with 1:25 remaining. Dallas led 33-21 after 1. Dirk Nowitzki had 11 points. Dallas lead 46-33 with 7 minutes left and went ice cold in missing their next 7 shots on not connecting from the field over the next 5 minutes. Sacramento took advantage by going on a 14-3 run to pull within 47-49 with 2:25 to go. Dallas led 54-49 at the half. Josh Howard opened the 3rd quarter scoring with a jumper a minute in, but Sacramento then scored the next 7 points to tie the game at 56-56 with 10 minutes remaining. The teams traded leads a few times and Dallas' largest lead in the quarter was just 5 points (Sacramento's largest lead was 1 point). Dallas led 73-72 after 3. The teams traded small leads over the first half of the 4th quarter and the game was tied at 85-85 with 5:35 to go and it became the Dirk Nowitzki show. Nowitzki scored the next 11 points as he was on fire (he wasn't simply wide open) to put Dallas up 96-85 with 2:35 left as Sacramento missed 7 straight shots. The Kings did score the next 5 points to pull within 91-96 with 1:30 remaining, but Dallas hit 6 straight free throws to seal the win. Dallas won 105-95. It wasn't a great performance by Dallas, but the Mavs simply needed a win to help get the Lakers debacle out of their system. Once again, it was disappointing that Dallas went up big early and was unable hang on to the large lead and had more of a contest than they should have. Thank goodness Dirk Nowitzki caught fire in the 4th quarter - it was a tight game until that point. Dallas shot 50% (38-76) FG including 3-8 3-pointers and Sacramento shot 43.2% (35-81) FG including 4-13 3-pointers. Dallas shot 26-34 FT and Sacramento shot 21-26 FT. Dallas out-rebounded Sacramento 45-37 including 12-11 offensive. Sacramento only had 16 assists. 14 of Dirk Nowitzki's 37 points came in the 4th quarter. He shot 14-23 FG and had 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Josh Howard's shot was all over the place - rarely going through the rim. He shot 5-19 FG and 4-6 FT for 14 points. However, he was active in other ways and had 13 rebounds and 6 assists in playing all but a minute. When not sitting on the bench in foul trouble, Jason Terry was hitting shots. He had 19 points including 7-11 FG. He also had 4 assists and 4 turnovers. Sacramento sometimes would double off of Adrian Griffin and Griff made them pay in hitting 5-6 FG (most from open 16-footers on the baseline). He had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Erick Dampier had 6 points and 9 rebounds including 4 offensive. Devin Harris was the offense off the bench with 15 points to go with his 4 assists. Keith Van Horn had just 2 points on 1-4 FG, 2 rebounds, 3 turnovers, and 4 fouls in 17 minutes. DeSagana Diop had no points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 4 fouls in 20 minutes. Mike Bibby was the high man for Sacramento with 22 points. The shocker was that he had no assists, only the 2nd time in his career he has gone assistless. It was balanced scoring for the rest of the players as Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 13 points, Corliss Williamson had 12 points, Kevin Martin had 11 points, Brad Miller had 11 points (only 4-12 FG), Ronnie Price had 11 points, and Francisco Garcia had 9 points. Abdur-Rahim had 8 rebounds. Williamson had 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Quotes Avery Johnson: "We really felt that we had to get off to a good start tonight. We felt that if we could be the team that played well in the 1st quarter it would set the tone for the rest of the game. We had a very bad 3rd quarter and then we ended up playing some pretty good defense in the 4th quarter. We thought that the way we set the tone in the 1st quarter really helped us. Jason Terry got us off to a good start and he was hot early on. And even though Josh struggled a little bit from the field, we thought that his rebounding and his assists helped us. He had 6 assists tonight, which I have been dreaming about. Adrian Griffin was a key contributor especially in the 4th quarter. Devin has been steady and Dirk made some pretty big baskets for us and some big drives which we were really excited about." Johnson: "Our defense wasn't very good in the 2nd and the 3rd quarter, but take your hat off to them, they are a team that is kind of wounded and there is no easy win." Dirk Nowitzki: "We all felt embarrassed [by the LA game]. We talked about it before the game and said we had to go out and forget about that one as quickly as we can. It wasn't great today, but it was a win." Nowitzki on the 4th quarter: "We ran a couple plays and they switched [Miller] on me. I had to be aggressive with that matchup, try to get fouled or get to the basket some. That really set up my shot for the 3 in the corner and the one pull up I had." Josh Howard: "I guess it has been a little slump for the last 2 games. I have been getting the open shots but they just haven't been going down. I'll just fight through that and try to fill up the stat sheet with other things like getting rebounds, assists, and steals. I still want to do what I can do to help the team win." Howard: "I'll put the night we had against the Lakers behind us. Tonight was a big win for us, and it was big challenge. Sacramento is a great team and its always good to come in here and get a win. The game against the Lakers is behind us. Superstars will have superstar nights and that is exactly what Kobe did." Jason Terry: "The game against the Lakers was a great night for Kobe and a terrible night for us. Tonight the only way we could erase that was to get a win. We came out tonight with a lot of energy. Now we have another game tomorrow that we would like to win. Take your hat off to him - Kobe had a great individual night. I'll get it out of my head until we meet them again." Terry on Nowitzki: "That's our MVP, our go to guy. When we need to get a basket, especially in a close game, we're going to go to him. He got the job done tonight." Terry on Nowitzki: "That's our MVP, we were going to him, we thought he had a good matchup. Dirk was just out there being Dirk." Devin Harris on the Lakers game: "It was something we had thought about, so we just went out tonight and did what we had to do. We started well, they got back in the game, but we got the win in the 4th quarter." Rick Adelman: "I thought our guys really played hard. We missed a ton of shots in the last 7 minutes - open shots - and Nowitzki made a lot of tough shots. Our guys gave great effort. I told them [that they] have a lot of games coming here at home. If we play hard and stay with it, we can get on a little bit of a roll. That's the attitude we have to take. I have nothing against the way we played tonight. I'll take a lot of those shots we got every night." Adelman: "Our guys gave a great effort. I have nothing against the way we played tonight. If we play like that night in and night out, we're going to be fine." Adelman on the 4th and Nowitzki: "We missed 4 open shots and he made 4 shots - 3 of them with people on him. He's good. Griffin made shots. They have a good team. They have a lot of weapons on the floor and it all revolves around [Nowitzki]. Like I said, I'll take the shots we had. We could have been right there, but we didn't knock anything down." Adelman: "I talked to some of the young guys we've been telling them for a long time that their opportunity is going to come and they better be ready. It's not a 1 quarter thing with them, its not a 1 game thing with them; it's basically 4 weeks. They're going to have an opportunity to go out there and get confidence and find out what they can do. I fully understand that it's been up and down, and I've had them on a short leash, but its tough. You have to try and win games." Adelman on the young players: "If they're out there for 4 or 5 minutes, for a young guy, it's hard to get anything going - the game passes you by and suddenly, its not them as much as its the way the games going. Now they're going to be on the floor and they have to come out and play like they belong. They don't have to rush into anything; they just have to play. I thought Kevin [Martin] and Francisco [Garcia] did a good job. Ronnie [Price] did a great job; for not playing he did terrific. I was pleased with the way they played. If they play like that night in and night out, I think well be all right." Corliss Williamson: "We felt like we put ourselves in position to try and take control of the game. They did a great job of keeping their composure on our court. We missed a few shots down the stretch and they capitalized on it." Williamson on Nowitzki: "He's one of the better power forwards in this league and he showed the reason why tonight. He carried his team." Kevin Martin: "I'm not happy because we didn't win, but we got a lot out tonight with Garcia and me starting. The other guys coming off the bench showed effort so we got a lot out of them. I found out I was starting the game yesterday." Martin: "Nowitzki's one of the best shooters in the world. We made him take tough shots but he hit them." Martin: "It makes it a lot easier knowing I'm going to get out there and play. It helps your mindset so you can get out there, focus on what you have to do and not be in a rush. You can let the game come to you. We can bounce back from this game if we showed the same effort we showed tonight." Francisco Garcia: "I think we played very good defense tonight. We've just got to come out the next game against Portland and turn this thing around. I found out I was starting before the game. I was relaxed out there, and tried not to get any stupid fouls. I just got to keep working. Dirk's a great player. He took care of business tonight and we're going to take care of business the next game." Ronnie Price: "I just tried to get in the flow of the game, feed off my teammates, bring energy, and just play as hard as I possibly could. I just did whatever Coach asked me to do. We've got a great group of guys on this team, and we're going to continue to fight and work hard every day in practice to try and get over this hump. We're not winning right now, but we're showing signs of success on this team. If we continue to play as we've been playing, continue to play hard, and work on the things we're not doing so well on the court we'll be okay." Dallas started off sluggish (actually, they seem to do better when they don't get off to a hot start as they tend to slack off after hot starts) and Seattle jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 10 minutes to go. The Sonics held a single-digit the rest of the quarter except when Dallas tied the game at 18-18 with 1:20 remaining. Seattle led 21-20 after 1. Dirk Nowitzki had 11 points in the quarter. Jerry Stackhouse made his season debut to start the 2nd quarter. Seattle led 23-22 with 10:40 left and went on a 12-2 run to go up 35-24 with 7:40 remaining. 11 points would be Seattle's largest lead and Dallas got no closer than 6 points in the quarter. Seattle led 52-46 at the half. Vladimir Radmanovic had 10 points in the 2nd quarter. A 3-pointer by Luke Ridnour and layup by Ray Allen gave Seattle a 66-56 lead with 6:40 left. Then 2 jumpers by Josh Howard surrounded a free throw by Dirk Nowitzki (Seattle defensive 3 seconds) to pull Dallas back within 5 points. Seattle led 71-66 with 4:30 to go and Dallas scored the next 7 points to take their first lead of the game at 73-71 with 2:15 left. A 3-pointer by Radmanovic with 45 seconds remaining put Seattle back up and the Sonics led 76-75 after 3. Howard had 14 points in the 3rd quarter. Radmanovic opened the 4th quarter scoring with a 3-pointer to kick off an 11-0 run to put Seattle up 87-75 with 7:40 to go as Dallas missed their first 6 shoots and then committed 3 straight turnovers. Darrell Armstrong was subbed in and gave Dallas a bit of a spark even though he didn't produce much stat wise and he played the rest of the game (Devin Harris' 2nd half minutes were very limited due to stomach cramps). Dallas did score the next 4 points on free throws and finally connected on a bucket with 6:30 left to cut Seattle's lead in half. 4 straight free throws by Nowitzki [and despite Seattle's complaints, they were really easy fouls to call] pulled the Mavs within 88-89 with 3:45 remaining. Radmanovic got a layup, Nowitzki hit 2 more free throws [an on-the-floor foul, but a foul (I said, 'That's a foul,' when it occurred, but was a little surprised they called it)], Luke Ridnour missed, and Nowitzki found Jason Terry open on the wing and Terry drained the 3-pointer to put Dallas up 93-91 with 2 minutes left. Rashard Lewis tipped in his missed to tie the game and Terry hit 1-2 FT with 1:30 to go. Allen nailed a jumper to put Seattle up at 95-94 with 1:15 remaining. At the other end, Allen made a great block on a Nowitzki layup attempt, but Terry stole a halfcourt pass (and momentum) and fed the open Nowitzki under the basket for the easy dunk with 45 seconds left. Ridnour missed a long shot and Dallas called timeout with 35 seconds remaining. Dallas got the ball to Nowitzki near the corner and Seattle sent a double-team at him and Nowitzki swung the ball to a wide up Terry on the wing and he swished a 3-pointer from the same spot he hit from a couple of minutes earlier to give Dallas a 99-95 lead with 18 seconds left. After a Seattle timeout, Radmanovic missed on a quick long shot, but got the rebound and passed to Lewis in the corner and he missed and it was only fitting that the hometown Terry snagged the rebound and he was intentionally fouled. He hit both free throws as a capper to his strong 4th quarter and give Dallas a 6 point lead. Flip Murray hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds to go. Dallas called a timeout to make sure they got the ball safely inbounded. They inbounded to the back court to an open Nowitzki and time expired. Dallas won 101-98. Neither of the 2 wins were solid outings for Dallas, but as they say, any road win is a good win and the 2 wins did help get some of the bad taste from the Lakers debacle out of their system. Dallas benefited in the 4th quarter from a number of Seattle mistakes including a number of dumb fouls, the dumb turnover after the great Ray Allen block on Dirk Nowitzki, and leaving Jason Terry wide open for that last 3-pointer. For the game, Dallas shot 44.6% (33-74) FG including 4-14 3-pointers and 31-36 FT. Seattle shot 43.5% (37-85) FG including 5-20 3-pointers and 19-24 FT. For the 3rd time out of 4 games, Dallas was out rebounded [and they had won the rebounding war in the 9 prior games]. Seattle out-rebounded Dallas 47-37 including 18-10 offensive. As a present to Terry, Avery Johnson gave Dallas Saturday and Sunday off so Terry could remain in Seattle and enjoy Christmas with family. Jason Terry and Dirk Nowitzki were the 4th quarter heros. Terry had 12 points in the 4th quarter and a key steal. Nowitzki had 14 points in the 4th and 2 nice passes for Terry's 3-pointers. Terry finished with 19 points and 5 assists. Nowitzki had 34 points including 15-15 FT (setting the team record for most free throws made without a miss), 13 rebounds, and a really nice 7 assists. After struggling the previous game, Josh Howard re-found his shooting touch and had 20 points. But his reboundings went down from the previous game and he had just 3 rebounds to go with 4 assists. No other Mav was in double-digits. Darrell Armstrong made his first appearance in the 4th quarter and only had 2 rebounds and 3 fouls for his stats, but that doesn't properly reflect the impact he had on the game. Erick Dampier had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Devin Harris had 7 points (snapping his streak of 11 straight double-digit scoring games) and no assists in 17 minutes as he was limited in the 2nd half due to stomach cramps. Adrian Griffin had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Jerry Stackhouse had 8 points in 16 limited minutes in his debut. Keith Van Horn missed everything he put up (7 shoots) and had 3 rebounds in 17 minutes. DeSagana Diop had no points, 1 rebound, and 1 block in 7 minutes and DJ Mbenga had 3 points and 1 rebound in 7 minutes. Del Harris was back in Dallas attending to his wife after she underwent emergency surgery (doing well). Vladimir Radmanovic was the high man for Seattle with 20 points to go with his 9 rebounds. Ray Allen had 19 points, but only shot 8-21 FG and 1-7 3-pointers. Rashard Lewis had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Flip Murray was the 4th Sonic in double-digits with 15 points, but he only shot 4-15 FG. Danny Fortson had 6 points and 9 rebounds including 5 offensive and continued his ugly reputation with a cheap foul on Nowitzki in the 4th (and complained about being called for a foul). Weird statistical note that I noticed from glancing at the win-loss stats: sure you'd expected Dirk Nowitzki's point numbers to be vastly different in wins and losses (it is as he's averaged 29 points in 20 wins and only 19.1 points in the 7 losses), but Josh Howard's shooting numbers are stunning. Howard's shot 50% FG in the 14 wins he's played in and only 29.3% FG in the 5 losses. Quotes Avery Johnson: "This was a gutsy performance by both teams. We feel very fortunate to win this game. We had a really bad 1st half. They came out and they are the team that was energized. They killed us on the boards in the 1st half. We came in and challenged our team at halftime, especially Erick Dampier and Josh Howard. Those guys came back with some pretty good energy for us in the 3rd quarter. Dirk was pretty steady the whole game." Johnson: "This is a back-to-back road win for us, which is really tough to do in the NBA no matter who you are playing. We are grateful to get out of here with a victory." Johnson on Terry: "Jason did it here like that last year for us. He had a stretch there where he wasn't playing particularly well and we just keep reminding him of who he is and he's made some big shots for us. It is good to see. He had his whole family here tonight and I cancelled practice tomorrow just so he can stay here with his family. I am happy for him." Johnson on the Lakers debacle: "Let me make this clear: I have not gotten the taste of the Lakers game out of my mouth. Obviously it was a great performance, but I'm upset about everything about that game. Do I harbor on it so I can't do my job as a basketball coach? No, but, we don't feel good about what happened so it's goning to serve as motivation for us. We had a great player have a great night - not a good night, a great one - and that is something that is going to stick with us. Those guys are very competitive and I'd go into a fist fight with a lot of those guys." Dirk Nowitzki: "Obviously, it's a huge win because you don't want to sit around for 2 days at Christmas time on a loss. It would have brought the whole team down if we'd lost. We talked about it at the timeouts, telling ourselves to leave it all out there. We were fighting from behind all night, but we kept battling." Nowitzki: "We didn't really play great the last 2 games, but we found a way to stick around. We knew we had to respond. After that LA game, we just wanted to get that out of our heads and 2 wins is the way to do it." Nowitzki on Terry: "Down the stretch, he's still clutch. Every time. He doesn't miss free throws. He doesn't miss a layup and the 3, you can basically count on it. He's one of the most clutch players that I've ever played with." Nowitzki on Terry: "He didn't really have a great game, but down the stretch, he's just so clutch. You can basically count on that 3 at that time. When the defense came to me and I swung the ball to him, he was wide open. I just knew that shot was going in." Josh Howard: "Everybody picked up. Darrell and Damp stepped up big tonight. When we get those guys doing things like that, rebounding and steals, were tough." Jason Terry: "It feels great. I mean this is the 1st quarter of the season and it's now behind us. It's good to get up to a good start going into the holiday season and into the New Year. We are very positive and we like what we are doing on both ends, but there is a lot of room for improvement." Terry: "I'm just thriving in the moment of getting the ball in late game situations and wanting to take the shot. You have to, and that's what want to do." Terry: "I'm just thriving in the moment late in games. You have to want to take the shot, and I do. Dirk was drawing a lot of attention. It's a good early Christmas present." Terry: "I just stayed with it. I made some mistakes out there, but its a long game and [Johnson] kept confidence in me." Terry on his shot: "We have been working on it before and after practice. I am just thriving in the moment getting the ball late in the games. You have to want to take the shot, and I do." Terry on being home: "It feels great. I had over 80 friends and family and loved ones in the stands again this year. It is a good early Christmas present and going on into the New Year, it definitely makes me feel good." Terry on Stackhouse: "Stackhouse means so much to us. He's our spiritual leader in the locker room, but there is just such a difference when he is in that uniform. He came out and gave us some big buckets tonight." Jerry Stackhouse: "It speaks of our resolve. Everybody was disappointed about what happened in LA." Stackhouse on his debut: "It felt good to feel a little burn and get back in the groove a little bit. I am maybe 75%. I need to get back into game shape. I didn't really get tired. I just tried to work my minutes hard when I was out there, but I felt good." Stackhouse on his knee: "It felt good. It was a good first step. It's not as strong as I'd like. But it's not as weak as it's been the last couple months." Bob Weiss: "Christmas came early for Dallas, we gave them one: way too many fouls. Nowitzki shot 15 free throws and I can't remember very many at all that were going to the rim. Loose ball fouls, a bump out at 20 feet; it's the fouls that if you're mentally sharp you're not making. Then of course we had a 1 point lead with under a minute to go and we turned the ball over instead of getting the ball into Rashard's hands and seeing what can happen. It was an effort game, but not a smart game. We were going to go into Rashard and run some clock off and we throw the ball away, immediately, and give them their 2 points back." Weiss on losing down the stretch: "It's very frustrating. The whole 3rd and 4th quarter we missed a lot of good shots that we were making early. Some nights their defense forces you into things but I thought we had some wide open looks that we just didn't put down. We got some stops when we needed them but then we turned the ball over; just a tough game for us." Weiss: "Winning breeds winning and last year we got on a roll and always found ways to win. Guys would hit big shots. Right now were pressing, guys are making turnovers we don't need to make, we're making fouls we don't need to make, and were missing shots we could be hitting. There is only one way to work things out and that is just working hard." Weiss on why Seattle is pressing: "We've lost some games. There is a frustration level. A team makes a run at you and you get tight instead of confident. That's seems to be what were seeing right now." Ray Allen on being up 87-75 with 7 minutes left: "They turned a lot of our turnovers into quality possessions. We couldn't stop them because they kept going to the free throw line. That's what killed us." Allen: "It's somebody different every night. Something different. We've got to learn from it." Allen on if it is the team confidence level: "Tough to say. Every night is a new night and we definitely feel that we can catch fire on any night. We've got to remember that there is a lot of time left and a lot of great things to happen the rest of the season." Allen: "It just seems like we're trying to make the fantastic play every time. We're not a bad team. We're very close to being very good, but we're making that one play at the wrong time that's costing us the game." Rashard Lewis: "It's hard to defend a man when you barely touch a man and he's shooting free throws. Every time we come down the court, they're going to the free throw line."
