It was an up and down season for Dallas in 09-10. The team started well in going 22-10 through December, but fell off in January and made a big trade during the All-Star break as the team was just 10-10 from January 2 to February 9 and giving up 104.4 points (while scoring 101.8 points). Prior to the trade, Dallas was looking like an average team that would be a low playoff seed (7 or 8) and likely out in the first round. On February 13, Dallas traded Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross, and James Singleton to Washington for Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood, DeShawn Stevenson, and cash. The trade was seen by many as a steal by Dallas, even more so when Howard went out with a season end injury 2 weeks after the trade. The trade added a solid scorer in Butler, a good center in Haywood, and a a defensive player in Stevenson. All 3 were thrilled to be going from a team headed for the lottery to a playoff team and fit well in Dallas. After the trade, Dallas went 23-7, including winning 13 straight, and the opponent's scoring dropped to 98.8 points (on just 45.2% FG) while Dallas' increased to 103.3 points. The success of the trade resulted in Dallas finishing with a 55-27 record, good enough for the #2 seed in the tough Western Conference and Dallas' 3rd division championship. Once again, Dallas faces San Antonio (#7 seed) in the playoffs. It is the 10th straight season that Dallas has won 50 games. Other season notes: The Mavs did make another trade during the season in trading Kris Humphries and Shawne Williams (who was not with the team and released by New Jersey shortly after the trade) for Eduardo Najera. It was more of a luxury tax trade for Dallas (New Jersey wanted Humphries from the players Dallas made available) in getting rid of Williams' contract, but they did add a nice role player in Najera who could fill in as needed when one of the two centers were injured. There were a number of shorter term injuries to various Mavs players during the season, but nothing major. Tim Thomas left the team during mid-January due to personal reasons and did not return - his wife is seriously ill and they have 3 young child, so he is with them [where he should be]. Jason Terry suffered a fractured orbital bone April 3 and missed the next 5 games and played the rest of the season with a protective face mask. Erick Dampier suffered a wince-inducing open dislocated right middle finger (the bone broke the skin) and missed 11 games in February and April. Dirk Nowitzki surpassed the 20,000 career points mark in January. Jason Kidd moved into 2nd place on the NBA all-time assist list in passing Mark Jackson (10,334) in November - he will likely finish in 2nd as John Stockton is 1st with 15,806. Kidd also moved to 4th on the all-time steals list in passing Maurice Cheeks (2,310) - he remains behind Gary Payton (2,445), Michael Jordan (2,514), and John Stockton (3,265). Nowitzki hit his last 72 free throws of the season, to surpass his team record of 60 straight (97 is the league record). San Antonio then went cold and Dallas started hitting some shots (and still missing some) as the Mavs scored the next 8 points to take an 11-8 lead with 6:50 remaining as the Spurs missed 4 shots and committed 2 turnovers. There was a very pretty play during Dallas' run where Caron Butler stole the ball and then he and Shawn Marion passed the ball to each other while heading up the court with the ball never touching the ground that resulted in a Butler dunk. The game stayed close with Dallas' lead switching between 1 and 3 points over the next 4 minutes. A Tim Duncan jumper pulled San Antonio within 14-15 with 2:30 to go, but Jason Kidd then scored the next 5 points, Tony Parker hit a jumper, and a nice play where Kidd passed to Marion who fed Brendan Haywood for a layup and foul and Dallas led 23-16 with 24 seconds left. A jumper by Parker capped the quarter scoring. Dallas led 23-18 after 1. Dallas shot just 36.4% (8-22) FG, but also shot 6-7 FT while San Antonio shot 45% (9-20) FG and didn't get to the line. 2nd quarter: San Antonio scored the first 4 points of the quarter as Dallas went scoreless over the first 1:30. After a Dirk Nowitzki bucket, a 3-pointer by Manu Ginobili tied the game at 25-25 with 10 minutes left. Dallas did score the next 4 points (as the Spurs committed 3 straight turnovers) to retake the lead and the Mavs held a small lead over the next 6 minutes - San Antonio pulled within 1 point 5 times during that stretch. San Antonio pulled within 39-40 with 4 minutes to go and Butler connected on consecutive jumpers and Dallas hit 3 free throws to take a 47-39 lead (the largest thus far) with 1:50 remaining as San Antonio had 3 more turnovers. The Spurs answered with consecutive jumpers and a layup by Antonio McDyess pulled San Antonio within 2 with 20 seconds left. Nowitzki converted a 3-point play with less than a second remaining to give Dallas a 50-45 lead at the half. Nowitzki had 11 points including 4-5 FG in the 2nd quarter. For the half, Dallas shot 43.2% (19-44) FG and 11-13 FT and San Antonio shot 56.8% (21-37) FG and 2-3 FT. Dallas had 7 turnovers which led to 6 San Antonio points and San Antonio had 11 turnovers which led to 17 Dallas points. 3rd quarter: Nowitzki opened the 3rd quarter with a jumper, but San Antonio then went on a 9-2 run to tie the game and a layup by Richard Jefferson gave San Antonio a 56-54 lead with 7:40 to go - Dallas had 5 turnovers during the run. Dallas then scored the next 4 points, but the lead would see-saw over the next minute. A dunk by Duncan gave San Antonio a 61-60 lead with 5:20 left, but Nowitzki scored the next 7 points to give Dallas a 67-61 lead with 3:45 remaining. San Antonio then tried hack-a-Damp in intentionally fouling Erick Dampier on Dallas' next 3 possessions, but they were not able to make up ground (Dampier went 1-2 FT, 1-2 FT, and 2-2 FT). Nowitzki hit 2 free throws and set a nice screen to give Kidd an open 3 up top and Dallas led 76-67 with a minute left. Duncan answered with a bucket up close and neither team scored over the rest of the quarter. Dallas led 76-69 after 3. Nowitzki had 13 points on a perfect 4-4 FG and 5-5 FT in the 3rd quarter and Duncan had 10 points. Dallas shot 58.3% (7-12) FG and SA shot 43.5% (10-23) FG. Dallas again had a huge advantage at the line (the Spurs were in the penalty with 5 minutes left and Dallas went 4-6 FT on hack-a-Damp) as Dallas shot 11-15 FG and San Antonio shot 2-3 FT. 4th quarter: It was a sloppy start to the 4th quarter with 4 straight turnovers and neither team scored over the first 1;30. Butler connected on a jumper and a 3-pointer to give Dallas their first double-digit lead at 81-69 with 10 minutes remaining. Dallas led 83-72 with 8:40 left and the Spurs went on an 8-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Matt Bonner, to pull within 80-85 with 7:15 to go. The teams traded points over the next 2 minutes and Dallas led 91-84 with 5:15 left. San Antonio missed 3 straight shots and Nowitzki hit a turnaround baseliner and Dampier went 1-2 FT to give Dallas a 10 point lead with 3:30 to go. Parker drove and got the floater, but Kidd drained a 3-pointer from up top to give Dallas a 97-86 lead with 3 minutes remaining. Ginobili tried to answer, but his 3-point attempt missed with 12 seconds left. Dallas had nice passing of Kidd to Jason Terry to Dampier, who was fouled, but he missed both free throws with 2:25 left. Parker was fouled driving and hit both free throws to make it a 9 point game with 2:15 remaining Nowitzki was triple-teamed and he passed to Kidd who passed to an open Terry and Terry nailed the 3-pointer from the corner to give Dallas a 100-88 lead with 1:55 to go. Ginobili hit 2 free throws and Dallas missed 3 straight shots, but got 2 offensive rebounds and the Mavs were able to knock 30 seconds off the clock. San Antonio missed on 2 attempts, but Bonner got the putback with 1:10 to go. Dallas ran some time off the clock, Butler missed and Kidd got the rebound and Dallas again ran more time off the clock. Terry missed and Parker got a fairly uncontest layup (Dallas not wanting to foul) and Dallas ran the clock out. Dallas won 100-94. Dallas leads the series 1-0. It was a solid win by Dallas against a dangerous team. It wasn't the prettiest of games by either team as both had sloppy turnovers. Dallas finished with 14 turnovers off of which San Antonio scored 14 points and San Antonio committed 17 turnovers off of which Dallas scored 20 points. Dallas' largest lead was just 12 points, but that came with 2 minutes left in the game (San Antonio did scored the last 6 points of the game, but Dallas was more concerned with running time off the clock than good shots earlier in the clock). San Antonio's largest lead was 5 points, but that came 2 minutes into the game and their last lead was with 7:40 left in the 3rd quarter. For the game, Dallas shot 47.3% (35-74) FG including 5-14 3-pointers and San Antonio shot 50% (39-78) FG including 4-11 3-pointers. Dallas did have a huge advantage at the line in shooting 25-34 FT while San Antonio shot just 12-14 FT. Dallas out-rebounded San Antonio 45-37 including 13-8 offensive. Dallas had 23 assists and San Antonio had 19 assists. All hail Dirk! Dirk Nowitzki was awesome with 36 points on 12-14 FG (yup, just 2 missed shots) and 12-12 FT and also had 7 rebounds. And a couple of his shots were of the "Oh, wow!" variety. And when he saw the double-team, he would pass the ball to the open player. And Nowitzki had plenty of help. Caron Butler had a strong outing with 22 points and 6 rebounds. He did commit 5 turnovers, but also had 3 steals. Jason Kidd had the all-around game going with 13 points including 3-6 3-pointers, 8 rebounds, 11 assists, and 4 steals (and 4 turnovers) as well had playing good defense. Shawn Marion chipped in with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. The 2-headed center played well with Erick Dampier having 5 points on 0-3 FG and 5-12 FT and 12 rebounds including 5 offensive and Brendan Haywood had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Jason Terry had just 5 points, but that wasn't too surprising as the Spurs normally game-plan to keep Terry from going off. He shot just 2-9 FG, but his 2 buckets were key with a double-teamed Nowitzki feeding Terry for a push shot with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter and nailing a 3-pointer with 2 minutes left to give Dallas their largest lead. Terry played the game without wearing his protective face mask. J.J. Barea missed his 2 attempts and had 3 assists in 15 minutes. It was a short lineup of basically 8 players as DeShawn Stevenson got in for just 7 seconds (defensive sub). It was the usual 3-headed monster for San Antonio. Tim Duncan was the high man with 27 points including 12-20 FG and 8 rebounds. But he also had turnovers problems with 6. Manu Ginobili (starting) had 26 points including 10-17 FG, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals - the Mavs had trouble controlling him as several times he drove for too easy layups. He also had 5 turnovers. Tony Parker continued to come off the bench (as he has since his return from injury) and he had 18 points and 4 assists in 34 minutes. Those 3 combined for 71 of San Antonio's 94 points. Antonio McDyess had 10 points and 8 rebounds and probably was the most effective in trying to guard Nowitzki (all struggled against Nowitzki). Richard Jefferson had just 4 points including 1-4 FG and 7 rebounds. George Hill, who tweaked an ankle at the end of the season, missed his only 2 attempts and played only 18 minutes (just 2 1/2 in the 2nd half) as Gregg Popovich felt he wasn't effective. Matt Bonner (who could do nothing defending Nowitzki) had 5 points and 4 rebounds and DeJuan Blair had 4 points on 2-2 FG and 2 rebounds in just 8 minutes. Keith Bogans played 16 minutes and missed his only shot and had 1 foul for his only stats and Roger Mason missed 2 shots, had 1 assist, and 4 fouls (he was the hack-a-Damp-er) in 9 minutes. Side note: It was kind of strange in that the powers that be (guessing Mark Cuban) decided to go old school and not to prompt the crowd (Lets go Mavs, Defense, ...) or play music during the game (the usual music and such were played during timeouts). The offensive cheers were lacking, but several chants of "Defense" got loud and loud cheers when baskets made could be heard. Quotes [Carlisle, Nowitzki, Popovich, Duncan, Ginobili quotes transcribed by me] Rick Carlisle on Dampier: "Duncan had a big game offensively. He scored a lot, but Damp made his job harder. He got his hands on a lot of balls, got us a lot of rebounds. And when they went to the fouling tactic, he made 4 out of 6, which was great for us at that point." Carlisle on San Antonio getting into the penalty with 5 minutes left in the 3rd: "It was a factor. Any time you can get into the bonus early it helps. Look, it was a very hard fought, aggressive game. The whistle was blowing some if you were aggressive, and there was contact both ways. And so, getting to the free throw line is a really important thing here in the playoffs." Carlisle on Kidd: "In the 2nd half, he really gave us a spark defensively on Ginobili and when he was guarding their point guard. He's been great all year, and not a surprise that he carried it into tonight." Carlisle on San Antonio's defense on Nowitzki: "There were some double-teams. But, look, we're going to see everything before it's over. And, you know, Butler got double-teamed when he got going. Marion got double-teamed a couple of times. They're going give you different looks, and we're going to give them some different looks too. We'll have to adjust when those things happen and we'll have to be ready to make plays." Carlisle on Dallas' pick-and-roll defense: "We struggled a little at the beginning of the game. And then when we finally got our barings, we did a better job. It's very tough because such a high percentage of their plays are pick-and-roll plays and they got really great facilitors and good screeners and rollers and a bunch of 3-point shooters out there, so, you know, it's going to be challenging. The important thing is 5 guys are engaged in it defensively - even though it's a 2-man game, everybody's got to be involved because so many different things happen on their screen-and-roll." Carlisle on Butler: "He got it going in the 1st half. A lot of his early points were not necessarily on plays that we were running for him, but just out of playing basketball, and that got him going. And then we started running stuff for him. He delivered. There was a period in the 3rd quarter where he really kind of carried us for a 3, 4 minute stretch, which was big. And, you know, they adjusted on him, double-teamed him, and we kind of went away and got other guys involved. But he's a guy that's not afraid. He wants the ball in those situations. He's been in the playoffs multiple times and he played well for us." Carlisle: "We played hard, we didn't necessarily play well all the time. We had some coverages that were broken frequently. Just staying with the play and playing hard through it and getting the ball covered helps you in those situations. Duncan threw in some very difficult shots around the basket, and that certainly added to their field goal percentage. Look, I would rather us to hold them to under 45 [% FG], but give up 50 [% FG] and win is a positive sign, but we're going to have to do better." Carlisle on the rebounding difference: "Well, they played small quite a lot. They're not a huge offensive rebounding team - although they had 8 - because they send 4 back [on defense] most of the time. So a discrepancy isn't shooking. We felt we needed to be a healthy plus on the rebounding side to make sure we're going be in good position, but we're going to have to keep this up. Because these are possessions of the ball and it's one less possession where Duncan, Ginobili, or Parker has it in their hands, and that's huge." Dirk Nowitzki on his game: "It wasn't too bad. Early on I just waited for the double-team, because that's how they played me all last year in the playoffs, but they didn't come so I knew I had my time. Then in the 4th quarter, they were double-teaming a little bit, but guys kept making plays. Caron [Butler] was fantastic and so were some other guys. So we just kept making plays offensive. We knew they were going to make a run, but we held them off." Nowitzki: "You don't want to start in the playoffs, especially at home, with a loss. We definitely picked it up energy-wise, the crowd was great. And we're going to need some more of the same effort on Wednesday because we got to hold homecourt. They're so good at home, so we got to make sure we do more of the same on Wednesday." Nowitzki on San Antonio's defense on him: "I think I kind of in my first couple of catches in the 1st half, I kind of wanted to see what they were doing, what kind of schemes they got going. And they played me pretty much straight up for the whole 1st half. I had some good looks there and took my time and was able to knock some shots down. And there in the 2nd half, they were coming there a little bit from the long side, made me pass the ball some. But I thought we had some great cutting going on. When I caught the ball there on the elbow in the 4th quarter, they came and we had back-to-back 2 cuts - JET [Terry] had a big floater and Marion a big cut for a layup. So that's what you got to do. You can't just sit there and watch. You've got to have everybody involved and the guys did a great job of getting open." Nowitzki on Dampier and Haywood: "They were great, really battling Timmy [Duncan] - I think Timmy still had 27, just because he's a Hall of Famer. But the guys made him work for everything, made him work for his points. Really battled him in there. Damp actually blocked 1 or 2 of his jump hooks. So I think they did just a fantastic job of battling for us, keeping some balls alive on the offensive end. Yeah, they were definitely big for us tonight." Nowitzki: "But, really that win means nothing if we lose on Wednesday. So we got to come out with the same focus. I think that when you play San Antoine, you have to guard 2 things and that's Duncan on the block and a lot of screen-and-rolls." Nowitzki on his game: "I thought there early I made a couple of lucky shots. The one where I thought I got fouled, I just threw up and it went in off the glass and there was another shot where McDyess was all over me and I was able to make a tough turnaround. So sometimes it's a little bit of both - you feel good about yourself and you need a little bit of luck, sometimes the ball just goes in. Sometimes you have one of those nights where the basket looks big and some other nights you can't even make a layup. So that's the NBA and you just have to fight through it. So tonight was definitely a good night." Jason Kidd on Dirk: "Early on they weren't doubling and they were just going to sit in his lap and see what he was going to do, and early on he put a lot of pressure on them by taking the ball to the basket. And in that 3rd quarter, he was great." Jason Terry: "We don't care what they throw at us. For us, it's all about our mental and physical approach to the game. Mentally when we're right, we're hard to beat." Caron Butler: "I thought we did a great job of executing our offense and getting the ball where we needed to. We shared the ball and did a lot of good things." Shawn Marion: "When they were double-teaming, we were getting layups and everything. It's hard on rotations when you're double-teaming. When you have a team with the talented players we have, you can't do that. It's hard, but sometimes when you're small, you have no choice." Marion on Dirk: "I mean, he's 7-foot and can shoot that J. It's hard guarding him when he's doing that. The best thing to do is hope he misses. But that's for them to decide." Greg Popovich on Dallas pre- and post-trade: "Well, I'm not going to compare their teams. I mean, I only care about the team they have now. So that's not of much interest to me to compare how they are now compared to Josh [Howard]. I know what they are now and that's who we have to play. And they played better than we did. They played very well. I thought the 1st half was just a killer. Half their points - 27 points off boards and turnovers, putbacks and turnovers - that's just a sloppy game. There's no reason for that. So I was very disappointed in us not being very sharp and I think we have to have a few more people step up and play worth a damn. I thought we had a lot of guys that played just like dogs." Popovich on hack-a-Damp: "We wanted to put him at the line and hope that he'd miss free throws rather than Dirk [Nowitzki] killing us the way that he was." Popovich on Nowitzki: "There aren't many nights when Dirk's not special. He was special tonight, but he had a lot of help. A lot of other guys played very well. Butler killed us. And both big guys are really good on the board and defensively Jason [Kidd] was a man. He was a focused, driven individual, as usual. So they had a lot of people play well and they played sharper than we did." Popovich on George Hill: "I didn't like what I saw in the 1st half. We gave him a shot there to start the 3rd quarter and I just thought he was really not able to do what we need to have him do." Popovich on double-teaming or not Nowitzki: "They had scorers last year too. You pick your poison and then whatever you pick you try to do it well. Dirk got the best of whatever we tried to do with him tonight - and we tried a lot of different things, but he beat them all." Popovich on if the sloppiness was preventable: "Well, sure. I don't think the turnovers, you know, turnovers are probably some caused for good reason, but there were a good number that were unnecessary and I thought we did a poor job on the board as far as team defense is concerned." Tim Duncan on turnovers: "I think we just made a lot of mistakes. I dropped like 3 of them that were unprovoked, they just slipped out of my hands - those are 3 of my turnovers right there. They got hands on some of Manu's pick-and-roll passes. They were just good defensively. I give them a lot of credit for that. But something easily that we can clean up, so that's a good thing." Duncan on Nowitzki: "He was unbelievable tonight. He missed 2 shots the entire night. And we threw just about everything at him and he handled it well. So hats off to him. He played an unbelievable game and we're going to have to make a couple of adjustments and come out and I can go ahead and bet that he's not going to go 12-14 [FG] again." Duncan: "We did a lot of doubling, we did a lot of different things. As I said, they took advantage of what we did, they moved the ball and they did a good job of it. So they made good reads of it. So we're going to have to approach from a different way and hopefully get better results from it." Duncan on Butler and Haywood: "They both made an impact. They both made an impact, and that's what you want from those guys. Haywood came off the bench and, whatever, 8, 10 points. And Caron made a run all of his own there for 3 or 4 minutes that gave them a good lead. So they both made an impact and that's what you want from guys that you bring in and they gave them just that." Duncan on if he felt they gave the game away: "Oh, we did give it away. We definitely did. I always say, credit to the other team, because they played well. But we gave it away. We turned the ball over way too much. We didn't play focused enough, whatever you want to call it, we just weren't there all in all tonight. So hopefully we bring that focus a little better next game, hopefully take care of the ball next game, and don't just continue to give them opportunities to score again. They're a very good scoring team and we need to limit our turnovers and to keep them off the offensive glass. I think that 1st half from turnovers and putbacks were more than half of their points." Tony Parker on the turnovers: "I thought they did a good job of deflecting passes and their rotation, they were very active tonight." Manu Ginobili on the turnovers and sloppiness: "I'm not sure about sloppiness, I mean we got to watch video and see exactly what happened. But definitely we turned the ball over too much. Against a team like them, 17 [turnovers] is giving them so many extra possessions and so many opportunities to score again. And then you give an extra 13 possessions on defensive boards, both add up. I think we played a pretty good game besides that, and some things that we really got to take care of." Ginobili on Nowitzki: "He was impressive today. We know he can score 36, but missing only 2 shots is what makes it really hard. He made some high difficulty shots with the defense all over him. When things like that happen, you just give them credit. You can't control those kind of shots. But what we can control is those 17 turnovers. Those 13 offensive rebounds. So even though he had a great game and made some shots that are almost impossible to go, we lost by 6 points and making so many mistakes. So that's the only good side of the story. I think that we can really improve." Ginobili on Dallas' pick-and-roll defense: "They did it much better in the 2nd half. It was harder for me to find the open teammate, to find the roll guy or my way to the rim. In the 2nd half they did much better. And, again, the playoffs are beautiful in the sense that there are so many little tweaks and details that you can work on.
