The Mavs have made a number of transactions since the season started. To set the opening day roster, Dallas released Ira Bowman and Greg Buckner, signed Randall Jackson to a 1 year, non-guaranteed contract, and placed Gary Trent (torn left hamstring), Hot Rod Williams (sore back), and Bruno Sundov (strained lower back) on IR. Jackson is a 6-11 forward who played with Washington last season (his first). He was released by Washington during training camp. He did not play in the Golden State game last night due to a right thigh contusion. Only with the Mavs. Free agent signee Kebu Stewart was no where to be found on opening night. He made the final roster and showed up for practice and then was gone with no one knowing where he was. He had cleaned out his hotel room, but hadn't checked out. The Mavs eventually found that he was driving home to California, but didn't know why he left the team. The Mavs released Stewart on Thursday and signed Rick Hughes to a 1 year, non guaranteed contract. Hughes is 6-9, 235 forward NBA rookie who was released by Utah at the roster reduction date. He had a nice training camp with Utah and nearly made the team. He played last season in Lebanon and was the "world's leading scorer" by averaging 37.2 points. And Leon Smith is now a Maverick. He rejected the push by the team and his first agent (who he later fired) for Smith to play this season in the CBA or IBL. He signed the Mavs' 3 year, $1,450,960 qualifying offer with a 4th year worth $933,835 at the Mavs' option. The Mavs had to make the offer in July to retain their rights to Smith. With the addition of Smith to the roster, the Mavs did not have to make a roster move as the team only had 11 active players at the time of the signing. Smith is currently on the active list (but is in Dallas, not with the team in California), but talk is that he will be going on IR and Sundov will be activated. The Mavs have brought in Bill Paterson, who will join Kiki Vandeweghe on developing Smith into an NBA player. Don't look to see Smith on the court any time soon. The Mavs have 4 player sponsored sections this season: Pack's Posse, Nashville, Strick's Land, and Michael's Fanatics. Golden State at Dallas (Nov. 2) It was a running 1st quarter with both teams playing well and Dallas holding small leads or the game tied. The Mavs went on a 6-0 run late in the first, but Golden State responded with a 6-0 run of their own. Dallas led 32-28 after 1. In the 2nd quarter, the Mavs could not pull away and the Warriors could not erase Dallas' lead. The Mavs had a 7 point lead at 40-33 with 9:45 left, but only had a 2 point lead at 46-44 with 4:30 left. Dallas led 55-51 at the half. Golden State cut the Mavs' lead down to 1 point several times in the 3rd quarter and tied the game at 68-68 with 4 minutes remaining. Michael Finley scored the next 5 points and Cedric Ceballos hit 2 free throws to put Dallas up by 7 with 2:20 left. Dallas led 81-75 after 3. In the 4th, the Mavs still could not pull away nor could Golden State catch up. Dallas led 89-81 with 8:30 left, but Golden State scored the next 6 points to make it a 2 point game at 89-87. The Mavs went on an 8-2 run to go up 97-89 with 4 minutes left. Golden State called timeout and I figured Cedric Ceballos, who had been playing well, would be back in the game and Hubert Davis, who had been playing poorly, would be out. Ceballos was back in, but Davis was still on the court to show me that I wouldn't make it as a coach. Golden State hit two free throws and the teams went scoreless over a minutes, during which time Davis collected 2 defensive rebounds. With almost 2 minutes left, Steve Nash missed a 3-pointer, but Davis got the rebound and a few seconds later drained a 3-pointer to give Dallas a 100-91 lead with 2 minutes left. The teams traded two points. Davis hit 2 free throws, stole the ball, and made the layup on the break to secure the win by giving Dallas a 13 point lead with 40 seconds left. Dallas won 108-96. Golden State did not have a lead in the game. Both teams played a running game. The Mavs were able to keep up the pace most of the game. Dallas played a smaller lineup against Golden State and was successful. Often (and by design), 6-3 Eric Strickland was guarding 6-9 Antawn Jamison - and it worked as Jamison only had 9 points including 3-13 FG. The smaller lineup did hurt Dallas on the boards as Golden State out-rebounded them 51-41 including 18-11 offensive. The Mavs continued to use the switching and trapping defense that they showed in the pre-season and it worked _much_ better. Rarely was a player left open due to a missed switch on defense. And the defense frustrated Golden State as they shot 41.5% FG and settled for mostly outside shots. Though their numbers don't show it, the heros for the game were Hubert Davis and Erick Strickland. Davis made key plays at the end of the game and Strickland was a monster on defense despite the height disadvantage and took a number of charges. He just struggled finishing - he missed at least 6 shots inside (but was fouled on several of them). Cedric Ceballos and Michael Finley led the way with points with 27 and 26 respectively. Finley really stepped it up in the 2nd half. He had struggle in the first half. I knew Golden State was in trouble when I saw Finley isolated on the left and Finley put the ball in his right hand and wiped his left hand on his thigh - often a sign that he is about to explode. And he did, driving across the paint and nailing a tough turning jumping 4-footer. Finley hit 7 of his last 9 shots and had 17 points in the 2nd half. Chris Mills took Dirk Nowitzki down with a flagrant foul on a Mavs' break. Cedric Ceballos immediately got in Mills face for the unnecessary force of the foul. Both Ceballos and Mills were hit with technicals (though Mills said he didn't do anything). Though Mills and Ceballos are friends off the court, remember that Ceballos' last two seasons were limited due to flagrant fouls. The funny moment of the night came when Damon Jones sped passed two players and skidded to a stop as he rounded the 2nd player when he saw Shawn Bradley standing in front of him and passed the ball out as his rear was connecting with the floor. Quotes Don Nelson: "The reason this was an important game is simply because we're go on the road and we have a lot of road games. The next home game against the Lakers will be a real hard game for us. So if you don't get this game, you look and where's your next win going to come from?" Nelson: "I'm just happy that we really did a good job and found a way to win. Now we can go on the road with some life, some enthusiasm and some confidence." Nelson: "Fin gave us so much. I didn't know he could do that. You saw that he was rusty, though, in the 1st half. But once he started getting his legs under him and getting a better feel, he started driving the ball to the paint in the 2nd half, and it really opened up his game and for the rest of his teammates." Nelson: "I think we can even play better than that. I thought we had a lot of opportunities that we didn't convert, but our game plan was solid. The guys executed a real good game plan with very few mistakes on the defensive end. We can play better on the offensive end, but we still scored over 100 points, and I have to be happy about that." Michael Finley: "The starters got the momentum going and the guys off the bench kept it going. When you've got that kind of continuity going from players 1 through 12, it's going to be tough to lose." Finley: "The smaller lineup was something coach Nelson tried at different points of the game. It gives us advantages at times both defensively and offensively and tonight we just made the most of it." Finley: "We just got things rolling and felt confident. I hope we can take that throughout the rest of the season." Cedric Ceballos: "Michael and I, we talk a lot about keeping everyone else playing hard when they get the ball. We want them to all play at our level. They have to for us to win." Ceballos: "The rules changes put us in a better situation because we are active and we're moving. The teams that have the slow big guys can't keep up with us. We keep moving guys in and out and they get more tired." Ceballos on the Mavs' often small lineup: "It puts our game in a better situation, because we're active and we're moving. That means teams that have the slow big guys, it makes it kind of difficult for them to guard us when we go small. Adonal Foyle couldn't stay out there with us because he was so tired. We've just got to keep the up-tempo game to the point where it comes to our advantage." Robert Pack on the Mavs wanting to defend the home court: "When you have a team like we have that's not won in the past, you have to establish yourself somewhere. You have to let teams know that coming in here that they're going to be in for a dogfight." P.J. Carlesimo: "We obviously missed Damp. We have to play better with who we have on the floor. They just exploited us." Carlesimo: "The Mavs are smaller, quicker guys. You have to hurt them on the boards, which we were able to do. But we didn't take care of the ball or recognize traps. We couldn't guard Cedric and Michael, in particular. Their smaller, quicker people played better than our smaller, quicker people." Carlesimo: "We got frustrated and didn't keep our composure." Terry Cummings: "We didn't keep our composure. I don't think we stepped up with our A game." Cummings on the Mavs' often small line-up: "It's not something you see every day, that's for sure. They are like any other coach Nelson team. He's going to put 5 guys out there and create certain matchups in his favor on one end, but we should have advantages on the other. We just didn't improvise and create enough on our end." Jason Caffey: "It's frustrating going against those little guys. Normally you would think that the big guys would have 25 points apiece against a small team like that. It's such a crazy look, but it worked for them tonight." Antawn Jamison: "Every time [Finley] took a shot, I had a hand in his face. He was hitting that jump shot all night. He started feeling really comfortable with that."' Jamison: "Their defensive scheme rattled us. We didn't make a lot of smart decisions." Seattle led 26-25 after 1. Gary Payton missed 6 shots in the quarter. Except for Vernon Maxwell, Seattle struggled to open the 2nd quarter. However, that was a big exception as Maxwell scored Seattle's first 9 points of the quarter including 2 3-pointers in the first minute. The game was tied at 33-33 with 9:40 left and stayed close over the next 6 minutes. The game was tied at 44-44 with 3:40 left and the Mavs fell apart. The Mavs could only produce 2 free throws (and 2 missed free throws) for the rest of the quarter while Seattle scored 12 points to take a 56-46 lead at halftime. Maxwell had 15 points in the quarter. Payton missed the only shot he attempted in the quarter. Seattle led 58-50 with 11 minutes left and scored the next 5 points and led in the teens for the next 7 minutes. Seattle led 75-61 with 3:20 left when the Mavs made their rally. Cedric Ceballos scored 6 consecutive points and Shawn Bradley slammed it home to cut Seattle's lead down to 75-69 with 2 minutes left. Seattle led 81-74 after 3. Seattle went up by 10 on a 3-pointer by Maxwell, but Ceballos answered with a 3-pointer and Steve Nash hit a jumper a minute later to cut Seattle's lead down to 5 at 84-79 with 10 minutes left. The youngsters for Seattle responded with Rashard Lewis and Jelani McCoy scoring 4 points each to put Seattle up by 13 points with 8:40 left. A jumper by Nash cut Seattle's lead down to 95-86 with 6:45 left, but Seattle scored the next 5 points (including a terrible non-call by the ref where Bradley was inbounding the ball under the Mavs basket and McCoy took the ball out of Bradley's hands and got the uncontested slam dunk). Dallas could not get Seattle's lead under 10 points the rest of the way. Seattle won 106-96. Gary Payton had a terrible offensive game with 10 points including 3-15 FG, but contributed 8 rebounds, 13 assists, and 3 steals. For the Mavs' only Cedric Ceballos had a solid game with 34 points - the 7th most points for a Mavs' bench player. Michael Finley struggle after the 1st quarter (where he had 11 points) and sat for most of the 2nd half - Don Nelson felt that Finley's heel was bothering him and that Finley was not being aggressive enough. I was concerned with how the Mavs' switching defense would work with a strong post player and Vin Baker proved my concerns correct with 22 points and 13 rebounds. The Mavs were once again creamed on the boards with Seattle out-rebounding them 58-41 including 22-8 offensive. Quotes Paul Westphal: "We had to have Gary create and score last year. Now Ruben can do it, Vin can do it and Vern can do. We have more weapons, more athletic ability and more cohesiveness." Westphal: "Vernon's really a weapon. I mean, he's just amazing. He comes in and just energizes the team. We can ride him for a little while and it lets Gary and Vin sit back and let somebody else create." Gary Payton: "I lot of people were making up for things that I had to do last year. When Dallas was doubling me and getting the ball out of my hands, guys did what they were supposed to do: They were supposed to attack and score baskets." Payton: "If I can get all these assists and get a little points, I'm happy with that. Now I know if we can go scoreless for one half and we're still up by 10, we're a good ballclub." Payton: "That sounds like the sign of a pretty good team to me. If I can keep getting these double-doubles and handle a little bit of point, I'm happy. If Vernon can score 22 and Vin keeps doing his thing, I can be in the background just leading this team by getting assists, steals and rebounds." Vin Baker: "When you have Vernon coming off the bench and giving us the numbers he's given us the first two games, it takes a lot of stress off of Gary." Don Nelson: "It was just a horrible effort at the end of the 2nd period and the beginning of the 3rd. We buried ourselves. We did get back in it, but, man, what an uphill battle. We had to exert so much energy to get back in it, we didn't have anything left on the end." Nelson: "We buried ourselves in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. If we have a bad game by any one guy playing minutes, it's going to be difficult." Nelson: "Without Gary Trent in the lineup we are just not going to be a good rebounding team. We are going to get beat [on the boards] every night." Nelson: "[Finley is] definitely bothered by [the bruised heel] all of the time. I don't know if that was a particular reason or not, but he wasn't playing very well and was settling for long jump shots, and we needed to do something different than that. I made a decision, and the team I had in there came back." Cedric Ceballos: "We were running, and then the pain for Mike got real excruciating. So it's kind of tough when he goes down. Later on in the season we'll probably learn to win games like this. But Gary [Payton] took his team over, calmed them down, and made sure they were in the right positions." Ceballos: "We're just trying to get some respect along with some wins. We can play better, much better." Then the Mavs really laid it on. Except for rebounding, the Mavs were playing great and it was a team effort as the Mavs went on a 19-4 run to go up 27-14 with 2 minutes left. Dirk Nowitzki swished a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Dallas a 34-18 lead after 1. Nowitzki had 11 points in the quarter. John Starks, who had missed all the attempts he had in the 1st quarter, opened the 2nd quarter with a 3 pointer and longer jumper - but those would be his only points of the night. Dallas led 37-23 with 9:21 when Donyell Marshall scored 6 consecutive points to cut Dallas' lead down to 37-29 with 7:30 left. The Mavs slowly built their lead back up and led 49-35 with 3:45 left. A 3-pointer by Steve Nash gave Dallas their first 20 point lead at 58-39 with 2 minutes left and Dallas led 64-43 at the half. Dallas shot 54% FG and Golden State shot 32% FG. Cedric Ceballos had 14 points, Nowitzki had 12 points, and Michael Filey had 12 points. Golden State cut Dallas' lead down to 68-51, but the Mavs responded with a 12-2 run to go up 80-53 with 7:20 left. Golden State did have a 10-2 run, but that just cut Dallas' lead back to 20. The Mavs led 91-71 after 3. The blowout continued in the 4th as Golden State could get no closer that 17 points. Dallas won 120-97. First the bad: the Mavs couldn't rebound worth a darn. Golden State would often have several shots at the basket as they had a Mavs opponent record of 33 offensive rebounds (only 6 below the NBA record). Some of it was the Mavs playing a shorter lineup, a few of them were the Mavs actually successfully blocking out and it being a long rebound, a few of them were the Mavs fronting a post player and then the post player getting the inside rebound, and a lot of it was the Mavs just not blocking out and going after the rebound. The good: The Mavs blew Golden State out anyways. Imagine what the score would have been if the Mavs could rebound in this game. There were a lot of solid plays and all around games by several Mavs. The passing in this game was great! The players were generous with the ball, mostly made the right passes, and seldom over-passed (and on some of those, they made the shot anyways). Dirk Nowitzki, Cedric Ceballos, Robert Pack, Shawn Bradley, and Michael Finley had great performances. Steve Nash did a good job of dishing the ball and one of his 3-pointers stopped a Golden State rally. Surprisingly, Hubert Davis was the last player off the bench (for only 2 minutes) and Sean Rooks did not play at all. Hubert came in a quickly nailed 2 shots - an encouraging sign as he has been struggling. I guess Nelson was saving Rooks for his fun matchup tonight against Shaquille O'Neal. Too bad we don't see Golden State again until January. Quotes Don Nelson: "That was nice. We were really clicking in the open court offensively and we did a lot of things and finished the shot at the basket tonight. It really made for an easier night for us and we're very grateful for the win." Nelson: "We have been working really hard on distributing the ball and finding the open guy and not taking the quick shot. It is a hard habit to break, but I think we did a good job of that tonight." Nelson: "Of course they're beat up and banged up and the guys that are out there aren't healthy and we know the problem they're having. We have the same problem. Fortunately, our guys all kind of got healthy the last week and were able to play. But we're still limping around a little bit." Robert Pack: "We wanted to generate some energy. We knew it was their home opener. They were going to come in with a lot of energy. We wanted to match that. We were able to get out in the first half and get some easy baskets and get a lead we were able to hold onto." Pack: "We came out and tried to get the fastbreak going, and tried to put some pressure on them. Tonight we were aggressive the whole game." Cedric Ceballos: "We just played really well. For me, it has been a long time. I'm happy." Ceballos: "We had great situations where we were able to isolate players. We don't usually take advantage of that. We usually take advantage of movement of the ball and getting the big guys moving. That is what helped us out a lot in getting open shots." Erick Strickland: "Everybody was aggressive, everybody passed the ball well. I think we got a lot of good open looks. We have to continue to play that way. That's the way we will be successful." P.J. Carlesimo: "We've got a lot of work to do. We played poorly and Dallas played well. You can't have a 4 week pre-season and have critical guys miss as many practices and games and try and come out and play." Carlesimo: "We were not unable to get back and defend. There were a lot of turnovers; there were not a lot of looks." Carlesimo: "I sense that we care. I sense that we are trying. We are clearly a half-step slow. We are like a fighter that's back on his heels. We are still marching, we are still banging, but we are not sharp." Antawn Jamison: "I don't make excuses. We haven't had guys into practice a lot. We haven't had a lot of guys to get into the repetition we need to get. You still have 5 guys out on the court and they can put out a better effort than we have the last 3 games. We are out of sync. We don't have the energy we know we normally have."
