The Vote 4 Finley campaign continues. Vote for Michael Finley on the All-Star ballot! You can vote at http://allstar.nba.com/Ballot once a day. I need _you_ to vote! It's just sad that Finley is behind Jason Williams, Anfernee Hardaway, John Stockton, Damon Stoudamire, Steve Smith, and Steve Francis in the balloting so far. Finley is averaging 23.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in December and 22.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 5.4 assists for the season. Vote and vote often. Get your friends and co-workers to vote. Create new accounts so you can vote more than once a day. You can make a difference. Let's get Finley in as a starter [or at least respectable in the balloting]! Derek Harper announced his retirement from the NBA and made it formal by submitting his retirement papers to the NBA. Harp was traded from the LA Lakers to Detroit during the summer and he refused to report to Detroit. He has been on Detroit's suspended list. He played in the league for 16 seasons, including 11.5 with Dallas. He is expected to join the Mavs' front office in the next week or so. Injury update. Hey, no one got injured in the last 3 games! The Mavs activated Erick Strickland to fill their open activate roster spot. He is expected to play tonight vs Toronto. Strick returns about 2 weeks earlier than he was expected to. Robert Pack is expected to be out at least another week. No new word on Steve Nash - out at least another week. Leon Smith update. The Chicago judge ordered Leon Smith to basically stay out of Chicago (except for court appearances) and to stay away from his ex-girlfriend. The judge ruled that Smith can not be in Chicago for more than 24 hours at a time and must be escorted by a representative of the NBA Players Association when he is in Chicago. The judge also rescinded the warrant for arrest for Smith violating bond by leaving the city. After the hearing, Smith returned to Dallas and the psychiatric ward he has been in for a few weeks. Smith's next court hearing in Chicago is February 3. Smith also fired his agent Matt Muehlebach. No word on who his new agent will be, but word is that the NBA Players Association is in charge. Dallas at Phoenix (Dec. 23) After the first minute, Phoenix held small leads in the 1st quarter. A 3-pointer by Jason Kidd gave Phoenix a 28-21 lead with 2:15 left. Dirk Nowitzki hit a 3-pointer to cut Phoenix's lead down to 31-26 after 1. The game was tied at 36-36 with 9 minutes remaining and neither team held a lead larger than 4 points the rest of the quarter. Phoenix led 60-57 at the half. Kidd had 14 points and 8 assists, Clifford Robinson had 19 points, and Michael Finley had 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists. Phoenix led 65-61 with 9 minutes to go and rattled off the next 7 points to go up 72-61 with 7:45 left. Phoenix was again up by 11 points at 74-65 half way through the quarter, but Dallas scores the next 7 points over the next 3 minutes. Phoenix led 80-76 after 3. The game continued to remain close in the 4th quarter. Phoenix led 89-86 with 9 minutes left when 2 Gary Trent baskets sandwiched a 3-pointer by Damon Jones to give Dallas a 93-89 lead with 7:35 remaining. Dallas led 100-95 with 4 minutes left. Kidd hit a layup and Todd Day drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 100-100 with 3:15 left. The teams traded baskets. Finley hit a jumper with 1:40 to go. Kidd shot an airball and Oliver Miller rebounded, but it was a 24 second violation. Finley nailed another jumper with a minute left to put Dallas up 106-102. The teams turned the ball over and Day hit a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left. Cedric Ceballos was fouled with 17 seconds left. He hit the first free throw, missed the 2nd, but Nowitzki hopped up and tapped the ball in on the rebound. Dallas led 109-105. But this crazy game wasn't over as Day nailed another 3-pointer with 7 seconds remaining. Nowitzki hit 2 free throws with 5 seconds left and Phoenix called timeout to bring the ball to half court. Down by 3, Phoenix got the ball Robinson behind the 3-pointer line and he swished the shot. But the toe on one of his feet was one the line and the ref saw it and ruled the shoot as a 2-pointer. The Mavs, before realizing it was a 2, called a timeout with 1.4 seconds left. The Mavs inbounded the ball to a wide open Jones who ran out the clock. Dallas won 111-100. And here I was ready to complain about the homecooking Phoenix was getting throughout most of the game (such as Oliver Miller's blatant offensive interference on his "tip-in" of Todd Day's shot that Miller tapped in on the way down that tied the game at 102). But the homecooking went away in the last minute. Dirk's wonderful tap-in of Ceballos' miss could have been called over-the-back. I didn't see it live, but on the replay, it seemed that there was slight body contact between Dirk and Miller and Dirk normally doesn't get those calls in his favor [but, the contact was slight, it didn't interfere with Miller at all, Dirk simply out jumped him, and Miller should have done a better job of blocking out instead of just standing in front of Dirk]. And when Robinson nailed that 3, I went "Oh, no!" and thought the game was tied. Replays did show his toe on the line, but I've seen _many_ times refs call the 3s with player's toes on the line and was happy to see the ref make the correct call [calling 2s as 3s has always been a pet peeve of mine - even when it hurts the Mavs - and it drove me nuts with the shorter 3-pointer line]. Merry Christmas! Probably the most surprising stat of the night was that Dallas dominated on the boards. Dallas out-rebounded Phoenix 48-34. Previous to this game, the Mavs had only out-rebounded one team and that was only by 1 board. Michael Finley had a monster game with a triple-double (he had the triple in the 3rd quarter) with 33 points, 13 rebounds, and 13 assists. His battle with Jason Kidd was fun to watch. Kidd finished with 25 points on 11-19 FG, 6 rebounds, 15 assists, and 5 steals. Kidd actually threw up late in the 4th (probably due to dehydration), but continued to play. Dirk Nowitzki was solid with 24 points including 10-17 FG and 9 rebounds and Cedric Ceballos chipped in 21 points and 7 rebounds. Damon Jones helped provide the spark in the 4th quarter and had 10 points in 15 minutes. Clifford Robinson led the way for Phoenix with 30 points including 4-9 3-pointers, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists, but his 6-9 FT shooting hurt. Todd Day kept hitting 3-pointers and had 18 points including 5-8 3-pointers. Quotes Don Nelson: "It was a bizarre game really. I thought for sure that was a 3 at the end. I didn't know his foot was on the line. It was a good call. I'm glad the referees stepped up and made the call." Don Nelson: "Well, Merry Christmas. It was a bizarre game, really. I thought that was a 3 at the end and I'm glad the referee stepped up and made the call. We were a little lucky and a little good. Wins are hard for us to come by. This is a big win." Nelson: "Finley was way above a triple-double. I thought they played him pretty well, but he had a phenomenal night." Michael Finley: "It's a win. It's a win that we've needed, especially in the situation we've been in - losing a couple of games in a row. My team looks for me to do all of those things - score, rebound and assist. When they're knocking down shots it makes me look better. When I'm in there getting rebounds and doing other things, it makes our team a whole lot better." Finley: "My team looks for me to do all of those things - score, rebound, find the open man. So the triple-double feels good. There wasn't any extra incentive because it was Phoenix or Jason Kidd, though. The trade is over and done with. My main thing is to make this team better." Cedric Ceballos: "I really have fun when I play here or at home against Phoenix. There's a lot of memories, a lot of goofing around. You can't beat that. It doesn't seem like a real pressure basketball game when you're playing against a team that you have good friends and good people with." Gary Trent: "Mike deserves to represent us in the All-Star Game. That's all there is to it." Scott Skiles: "It wasn't the last minute that cost us the game. It was the 47 before that. We just lost them in transition, and in critical moments in the game we couldn't get the rebound when we had to have one." Skiles: "That is a tough loss and kind of a bitter pill to swallow." Skiles: "Finley had a triple-double. Jason did a good job on him, but he just got going early on us and like a lot of good offensive players, once they get going early they are awfully hard to stop." Clifford Robinson on his late 2-pointer: "I try to make sure that I'm behind the line. So it was a surprise to me that he called it a 2. But when I did look at the replay I did think I was behind the line." Todd Day: "This was a hard way to lose. I don't think they outplayed us but they seemed to get more breaks." Sacramento led 39-23 after 1. Dallas cut the Kings' lead down to 45-36 with 7:30 remaining, but Sacramento answered by scoring the next 8 points to go up 53-36 with 5:30 to go. The Kings built up their lead to 65-42 with 2:30 left. Sacramento led 70-49 at the half. The Kings shot 63% FG in the half. Chris Webber had 15 points. In the 3rd, Dallas went on a 17-5 run to pull within 66-77 with 8 minutes left. The teams traded baskets and Sacramento was up 79-68 with 5 minutes to go. The Kings then went on a 13-2 run to push their lead back into the 20s at 97-78 with 2:30 left. Sacramento led 97-78 after 3. The Mavs slowly ate away at the Kings' lead and the Kings led 105-92 with 7 minutes remaining. Sacramento was up 109-98 with 4:20 left and Dallas went on an 8-3 mini-run capped by a 3-pointer by Damon Jones to pull within 106-112 with a minute left. Jon Barry hit a jumper and Gary Trent got a layup with 37 seconds to go. Jason Williams nailed a jumper with 17 seconds left to put the Kings up 116-108. Hubert Davis drained a 3-pointer with 7.5 seconds left, but Williams hit 2 free throws to close the game. Sacrament won 118-111. Blah. That was an ugly first half by Dallas. Allow your opponent 70 points in the 1st half and you are not going to win. For the game, Sacramento shot 56% (47-84) FG and Dallas shot 45.5% (46-101). The Mavs out-rebounded Sacramento 41-40 including 17-7 offensive [with all the shots that the Kings were hitting, they didn't need to rebound]. It was only the 3rd game this season that Dallas has out-rebounded a team. Dallas was called for 23 fouls and Sacramento only 12 fouls - and I have to wonder about that as Gary Trent, who only plays around the basket, did not attempt a free throw. Chris Webber had 31 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. Jason Williams wasn't out of control (he normally has poor games against Dallas) and had 23 points, 8 assists, and only 2 turnovers. Trent had a solid game with 20 points on 10-15 FG and 5 rebounds. Michael Finley led the way with 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists. Dirk Nowitzki chipped in 18 points and 6 rebounds and Hubert Davis was a sharp shooter with 17 points on 7-11 FG and 3-4 3-pointers. Quotes Rick Adelman: "It was a game we had to have, and we responded when we had to. You've got to look at it as 'yeah, you'd like to get a blowout there', but the win was the important thing and that's what we got." Adelman on the Mavs' run in the 4th: "It's always a combination [of hot shooting and poor defense] when a team makes a run like that. Fortunately, we were able to answer each time, especially down the stretch." Chris Webber: "We didn't close the game perfectly liked we wanted, but we won. When you get up 20 points early, that's the toughest thing." Jason Williams: "I think sometimes we get a lead and we play not to lose instead of to win, but like I said, we'll learn." Vlade Divac: "Hopefully, we're going to start winning games. We've been struggling on the road, but in home games, we've played much better. We jumped on them in the 1st half and that was the best half we've played all season. But then again, we couldn't even finish it up." Nick Anderson: "That 1st quarter was great. Teams are gunning for us every night. After we lost to the Clippers, it was like they won the NBA championship. We have to realize we've got to come out and play well every night." Don Nelson: "It was two different halves. We're not good enough to spot any team 20 points and expect to win a basketball game." Nelson on Sacramento's shooting: "I thought a lot of it was us. I just hated the way we came out and played the 1st half. It makes me sick to my stomach." Nelson: "I think we are going to be decent, but we've got to do better than we started, that's for sure." Michael Finley: "We just didn't have any energy. We came out flat and it cost us. You can't win in this league playing one half. I don't care who you are, especially if you give them such a comfortable zone in the 1st half." Gary Trent: "We're not strong enough to spot anyone 20 points and try to come back in their arena or our arena, you just don't do that." Trent: "We were so flat. I'm not even going to say our defense was terrible in the 1st half, because we didn't have any defense." Trent: "We're just so flat, our defense was terrible. I'm not going to say it was terrible in the 1st half because it was terrible the whole game. We need to put 2 halves together, not 3 quarters, not 2 1/2, but 4 solid quarters together from jump ball to the final dead ball." Trent: "We came with our D game, maybe our F game. We were looking like this was still a 7:30 game [instead of a 6:00 game]. It was about 7:30 after halftime when we finally picked it up." They scored the last 5 points of the quarter to go up 31-19 after 1. The Lakers led in the low teens for most of the 2nd quarter. The Lakers were up 48-34 with 3 minutes left and Dallas scored the next 11 points to pull within 43-48 with 1:15 remaining. The Lakers led 52-48 at the half. The teams opened the 3rd quarter trading baskets and it was all tied up at 56-56 with 9 minutes left. Up 60-59 with 7:45 to go, the Lakers went on a 9-2 run to take a 69-61 lead with 4 minutes left. The Lakers led 78-71 after 3. The Lakers held single digit leads for most of the 4th quarter and led 102-94 with 4 minutes left on a 3-pointer by Rick Fox. Dirk Nowitzki hit 2 free throws and Michael Finley nailed a jumper with 2:30 remaining to pull Dallas within 98-102. Glen Rice drove for a layup with 2:15 left, but Nowitzki drained a 3-pointer and Finley hit another jumper and the Lakers only led 104-103 with a minute to go. Shaquille O'Neal got the ball under the basket and the Mavs immediately fouled him. He hit both free throws with 48 seconds left. Finley missed a jumper but Gary Trent get the offensive rebound and kicked the ball back out to Finley who nailed the 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to tie the game at 106-106. The Lakers were playing without a shot clock, but, surprisingly, Kobe Bryant drove to the basket with 8.6 seconds left, missed the layup, but was fouled. He hit both free throws. The Mavs called timeout and kept the ball at the Lakers' end. Finley brought the ball up court and pulled up for the long 3-pointer with a second left. The shot bounced off the back of the rim and time expired. The Lakers won 108-106. Though the Lakers have to be greatful for pulling out the win, they can't be too pleased with Kobe Bryant's play at the end. There is no way he should have drove to the basket with _so_ much time left of the clock. It just wasn't a smart play and he lucked out that a foul was called. Shaquille O'Neal was often guarded by the much shorter Gary Trent and O'Neal had a monster game (though not as huge as you would think with that match-up) with 35 points including 7-10 FT and 14 rebounds. The Mavs did not play Hack-A-Shaq in this game (except when he got the ball directly under the basket a couple of times) as the team had done in previous Lakers games. The match-up to watch was, of course, Bryant vs Michael Finley. I could tell that at times Bryant was focusing on the match-up instead of the team play as he would occasionally do a one-on-one play or a quick shot instead of running the offense. Bryant finished with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Ron Harper was the unsung hero for this game with his deadly shooting. He had 17 points on 8-9 FG. Finley was great and hit the key shots except for the biggest one. He had 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists. The star for the night for Dallas was Dirk Nowitzki. He had a quiet game up until the 4th quarter, where he exploded. Dirk was raining 3s in the 4th and had 19 points on 5-6 FG, 4-4 3-pointers, and 5-5 FT in the quarter. He finished with 30 points including 10-16 FG and 5-7 3-pointers and 6 rebounds. Quotes Phil Jackson: "I think it was kind of a holiday mood, it's better to give than to receive. We almost gave the game away." Jackson: "Those guys really came on like gangbusters. I'd like to say that only maxim that you've got is that if you live by the sword, you die by the sword. They took that last jump shot, it was a risky play and they ended up losing the game. I thought they had the energy to win." Jackson: "Defensively, we fell apart in the 4th quarter. Started with a 4-point play to Nowitzki, and boy, he just caught us napping a couple of times out there. We were ripe for a loss tonight and we escaped. And I hope the guys understand that and I think they do." Jackson: "We were ripe for an upset. We escaped." Jackson on Bryant driving to the basket with time left on the clock (Bryant was fouled and converted the free throws): "He thought he had an opportunity to score and that's his decision. We did have a play for Glen. We had executed something similar and that is what we set up to do in that situation. He took a good shot. It must have been the holiday mood. It's better to give than receive, and we almost gave the game away." Jackson: "Kobe went off a little bit on his own there. We had something else designed, but he felt he had a good opportunity. That's all right if he read that play and felt comfortable with it." Shaquille O'Neal: "We played down to their stinking level. We didn't play well and shouldn't be proud, but we won the game. We have had that problem for 4 years. We always get up for the big teams - we have to get up for everybody." Shaquille O'Neal: "We just played down to their level. We've been having that problem for 4 years, as long as I've been here." Ron Harper: "After playing the San Antonio Spurs, you have to turn and play this kind of team - you don't know what kind of ballgame we were going to have against this team. They had some guys who made some good shots for them tonight. Turns out that they hung around and hung around and had a chance." Don Nelson: "I liked our game plan and I even liked the fact that we went for the win at the end. I liked the looks of that shot the whole way, but it was just a little too long." Nelson: "I liked the fact that Mike had a real good look at a long 3. We gave him the option, if that's what he likes then take it; if he wanted to drive it and shoot a two, then that was all right too. We'd go for the win or a tie, he chose to take shot. I liked the looks on it the whole way - it was a little too long. Michael Finley: "I had a good look at it. It felt good from my hand, but unfortunately, it didn't go in. I think Kobe was playing me pretty much on the drive, and was going to stop me from going to the basket. Plus, the shot I took gave us a chance to win the game in regulation." Finley: "I had a good look at it, and it felt good coming from my hand. I thought it was in. It just went long." Finley: "I think Kobe was playing me pretty much for the drive, being that we were down 2. Then I could go for the tie. But I had a good look at the 3 and decided to shoot that one. Especially since we had an opportunity to win it in regulation, instead of going into overtime in a hostile place like here at the Staples Center." Finley: "I had a little bit more time, but I felt it was a good shot. I just missed it." Finley on Bryant's drive at the end: "If I would have stopped him, then we would have gotten the win. Unfortunately, I fouled him. I got a little of the ball and a little of him." Dirk Nowitzki: "I was wide open in the 4th quarter on every shot and I just made them. A lot of them were in transition so they just didn't know how to pick me up or when to pick me up, so I had a lot of open looks. I didn't even realize I had 19 in the 4th quarter. I was just in the game and was just trying to play hard." Gary Trent, who went 0-4 from the line: "Mike may have missed the shot that cost us the game, but my free throws really cost us the game."
