Gary Payton (Sea) won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award.  Payton
received 53 of the 113 available media votes.  Scottie Pippen (Chi)
received 15 votes, Dikembe Mutombo (Den) 13 votes, David Robinson (SA) 9
votes, Hakeem Olajuwon (Hou) 8 votes, Michael Jordan (Chi) 7 votes, Dennis
Rodman (Chi) 4 votes, Latrell Sprewell (GS) 1 vote, Horace Grant (Orl) 1
votes, and Bo Outlaw (LAC) 1 vote.

Antoine Walker (forward, sophomore, Kentucky) declared his eligibility for
the NBA draft.

Randy Livingston (guard, LSU) declared his eligibility for the NBA draft.

Alonzo Mourning (Mia) underwent surgery on his ring finger on his left
hand to repair a chronic dislocation problem.  His finger will be in a
splint for about 3 weeks.

George Gervin, David Thompson, Gail Goodrich, Kresimir Cosic, Nancy
Lieberman-Cline, and George Yardley were inducted into the Basketball Hall
of Fame.
