News from September 12. 9/8 Vancouver named Rex Hughes as an assistant coach. 9/11 Houston's second round draft pick (#41) Erik Meek has signed a 1 year contract with Galatasaray of Istanbul, Turkey. Houston retains the rights to Meek. Finally, some good news: The votes for decertifying the Players Association were tablualated yesterday. 369 of 422 eligible players voted. 226 voted against decertifying, 134 voted for decertifying, with 9 votes not counted - 8 were being challenged as to whether or not the players should have been allowed to vote and 1 player filled in both boxes. A majority of those who voted was needed for the union to be disbanned. Thus, the Players Association remains in place. The sides will have 7 days to file challenges about the results with the National Labor Relations Board. 4 to 6 weeks is the standard time it takes to resolve any challenges. But the NBA and Players Association are not waiting for the challenges and other road blocks to be taken care of. A player representative meeting has been scheduled for today (Wednesday) and a vote on the proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement is expected to take place. 3/4ths of the representatives (21 of 27) must approve the CBA for it to pass. The Board of Governors have a meeting scheduled for Monday, but the NBA says that they may call for a vote by the Board of Governors by Friday if the Players Association approves the CBA. A majority of approval is needed by the Board of Governors to ratify the proposed CBA. If both sides ratify the CBA, the lockout could be lifted by Monday and the NBA will resume normal operations (free agents and rookies can be signed, players could use the team's facilities, pre-season will start October 6 as scheduled, and the regular season will start November 3 as scheduled).
