San Antonio re-signed free agents Sean Elliott and Doc Rivers. San Antonio also signed unrestricted free agents Greg "Cadillac" Anderson, Carl Hererra, and Brad Lohaus. Hererra was signed to a multi-year contract. Houston signed unrestricted free agent Mark Bryant to a multi-year contract. Minnesota signed unrestricted free agent Sam Mitchell to a multi-year contract. The LA Lakers signed Gerald King (F) and Kareem Townes (G). Denver signed Rastko Cvetkovic (C). Portland signed Arvydas Sabonis (C) to a 3 or 4 year contract believed to be worth $4 million per year. Portland renounced their rights to Steve Henson and James Edwards. The LA Clippers renounced their rights to Gary Grant. Yet more labor woes. The NBA will lock out the refs Sunday due to the National Basketball Referees Association rejecting a no-strike, no-lockout agreement while negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement between the two groups occurs. The old CBA with the refs expired September 1. Replacement refs will be hired while the refs are locked out. The Taco Bell pay-per-view commercial event that was to take place Saturday night between Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O'Neal (with two "undercard" matchups as well) has been cancelled due to Olajuwon suffering from back spasms.
