USA Basketball announced that the 12 NBA players who were selected to play for the 1998 World Championship have been dropped from the team due to the players' refusal to confirm that they would still play for the World Championship if the NBA locked the players out. USA Basketball is a separate organization from the NBA, but the NBA players were likely to boycott the World Championship if a lockout occurred. USA Basketball has to submit a 12 to 24 man roster by Friday. They are expected to invited 24 college players, CBA players, and Americans playing overseas to compete for the final 12 spots. The NBA players who were selected to Team USA were Grant Hill (Det), Tim Duncan (SA), Glen Rice (Cha), Kevin Garnett (Min), Tom Gugliotta (Min), Gary Payton (Sea), Vin Baker (Sea), Tim Hardaway (Mia), Allan Houston (NY), Terrell Brandon (Mil), Christian Laettner (Atl), and Chris Webber (Sac). Team USA will still be coached by Rudy Tomjanovich (Hou) with assistants Del Harris (LAL), Mike Jarvis (George Washington University), and Lon Keuger (University of Illinois). Jimmy Rodgers resigned as assistant coach of Chicago. Minnesota announced that they will not exercise their team option for 98-99 for Stanley Roberts. Aaron Williams (Sea) exercised his option year to remain with Seattle for 98-99.
