Andrew Gudgel's 1700's "Peacable" land in PA

Old Andrew Gudgel's "Peacable" homestead site

Dianne Gudgel-Holmes and Charles Holmes went to Fayette Co, Pennsylvania in November, 2005 to research the 1770 location of Old Andrew Gudgel's land, called 'Peaceable.

Andrew Gudgel's land patent map was obtained from the Uniontown, PA library. It lists land surveys for Andrew and his neighbors that were conducted in the early 1770s. Some of the patents were not issued until the late1780s. The style of map title suggests the map may have been printed at a later date.

Taking the map to Luzerne township, a resident helped determine the most likely location for Andrew's farm. It is a community within Brownsville called Hiller. GPS points and photos were taken at two locations, one of which is now a park with a hill and flag pole on the top. This appears to be exactly where Andrew's farm was located. Photos were taken from that spot. Later the GPS points were merged with aerial photos; then key geographic features from the 1770 map were aligned with the aerial photo to produce the overlaid map that appears here.

This 2005 photo was taken from Andrew's land looking towards the SW, where his neighbor Mr Crawford would have lived.
It is easy to imagine this landscape and barn in an earlier era.
