Observing report for 11 March 1997

Comet Hale-Bopp

After posting my morning observation from Kitt Peak near Tucson, I decided to try for an evening obs. I'm at 32 degrees latitude, and at 2:43UT (7:43pm MST) in deep twilight I could see the comet about 4 degrees above the horizon. It wasn't a very obvious naked-eye object, but in 7x50s I could see about 2 degrees of the dust tail. The Moon was quite impressive with bright Earthshine above the slim crescent.
