1819 -- US: Savannah, a fully rigged sailing vessel equipped with auxiliary steam power, left Savannah, Georgia. On 20 June it lands in Liverpool, England, becoming the first steam ship to cross any ocean.
1828 -- Albrecht Grafe first eyeballs the place. Pioneer eye surgeon, founder of modern ophthalmology.
1845 -- American Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt lives.

1856 -- Democracy in Action?: Congressman Preston Brooks of South Carolina visited the floor of the US Senate & beat Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts unconscious with a gutta-percha cane, as two Georgia senators stood idly by. Sumner was incapacitated for three & a half years.
1859 -- Arthur Conan Doyle lives (1859-1930). British writer, best known for his creation of the detective Sherlock Holmes. After his son dies in World War I, he dedicates himself to spiritualistic studies. An example is The Coming of the Fairies in which he supports the existence of "little people" & spent more than a million dollars on their cause.

1895 -- Italy: The trial of Oreste Lucchesi & Amerigo Franchi, begun in Florence May 2, concludes. They are convicted of assassinating the Giuseppe Bandi on July 1, 1894. Editor of Il Telegrafo, his articles were responsible for the repression & arrest of numerous anarchists. Lucchesi & Franchi each receive 30 year prison sentences.
