PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

There has been considerable discussion of late on many Samoyed e-mail lists regarding codes of ethics. One of the more interesting points is made in this article from the Canine Chronicle.

http://www.caninechronicle.com/features/misc/milton_404.html

I’m asking Liz to publish the SCWS code with this newsletter and for Ron to post it on our website in an area that can be accessed by members and non-members alike. [Click Here for the SCWS Code of Ethics]

For our “nation” of fanciers, perhaps the lead in should be “We hold these truths to be self-evident…” It is not a perfect document. I have yet to see one that is. However, it provides us with the general “rulebook” for conducting ourselves in this Sammy world.

Our parent club is struggling to revise the current COE based on years of work and meetings at the National Specialties. The board is also trying to respond to the membership by developing the “Better Breeders Bureau”. It is hoped that the BBB will be the “teeth” in the now-perceived “toothless COE.

One of the challenges for any of these documents is that things change; knowledge increases, and beliefs we once held evolve with experience and research. I believe these documents need to be “living” documents, reviewed periodically and revised as our collective ethics evolve. To that end, I would ask you all to refresh your memory of the SCWS code of ethics and determine if it is still in keeping with the truths WE hold self-evident.

As the tulips and daffodils are abloom – we know what follows -- The spring show season! I hope you all see the ribbons bloom in the colors your hoping for and we all have a chance to reconnect at the various show venues. Safe travels and give your Sammies a hug from me!

Cheri

Ronald E. Bowser
October 2, 1943 - March 22, 2004

Some of you had the good fortune to know Ron Bowser, others may not have -- but he was a wonderful, gentle man who graced our club activities for a number of years and was the IWPA statistician for-almost-ever. He was pre-deceased by his dog, Sam, and I'm sure they're together up at a weight pull across the rainbow bridge. We received the following information from his family.

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you on behalf of the Bowser family (my mother Mary Bowser and brother John Bowser) with sad news. My father, Ronald E. Bowser, had a massive heart attack on Saturday March 20th, 2004 while in Tucson, AZ visiting family. Two days later, on March 22nd, he peacefully passed away; my mother, brother and I were all able to be at his side.

His passing was very sudden and has come as a shock to the family, as I’m sure it will be a shock to many of you. We take solace in the fact that my father died happy, having been able to retire and spend the last years of his life traveling in his new 5th wheel trailer with my mother and their dog (Nika).

My father was not big on ceremony, his only wishes were to be cremated and to have his ashes scattered at Dead Horse Point in Moab. There will be no funeral services, the family plans to privately honor my father’s wishes sometime in the coming year.

My mother will remain in Tucson with her family until April 24th, at which time my brother and I will fly back down to drive her home. We plan to stop through Utah to visit and mourn with my father’s mother (Lillian Bowser) and sister (Tyleen Paas), who were unable to be with us during my father’s passing.

If you wish to contact any of us I have provided information below.
