Puget Sound Ecoliteracy Project:
Through a regional conversation about the simple question, " What should residents of Puget Sound know about their region’s environment?", we hope to identify a coherent set of eco-literacy goals for Puget Sound residents that will then form the basis of a number of coordinated environmental education activities for K-12 and college students, professionals and the general public. These activities would be conducted by the many environmental organizations and educational institutions in our region and by new coalitions that may arise out of this regional conversation. Socio-Linguistic Models of Learning and Research:
We use language and conversations in all aspects of our lives. In our working lives, we interact with others to coordinate our activities through "conversations". These conversations can be seen to be more than just isolated collections of comments, conjectures and gossip. Information, influence and emotions can be transmitted throughout a community, institution or workplace. At their simplest they form chains of conversations. However, as we begin to understand better how students learn (and indeed how researchers develop their own understandings), we see that conversations are essential to the development of meaning and understanding in individuals. And so the chain of conversation become more of a web - with knowledge and understanding developing within each individual at their own level of competence. The world is discovered anew by everyone.
