Steve's 1998 adventures

1998 was my best outdoors year yet. I was fortunate to climb the 5 big Washington Cascade volcanos, and many interesting peaks in the North Cascades. I discovered snowshoeing, great for year-round hiking. I went deep into mines, discovered several abandoned trails, found interesting historical artifacts, encountered bears up close and personal, took a basic climbing course, and in general had a lot o' fun! Until the avalanche, anyway...

Scariest trip: an avalanche on Mailbox Peak.

Best trip: Mt. Daniel. A great group of climbers, a really interesting route, awesome scenery, but not a marathon epic. We took the Hyas/Lynch glaciers up, and the ridge route down. The glacier traverse was educational (with interesting picket placements) and a ton o' fun.

Best snowshoe trip: tie between Mt. Margaret and Mt. Defiance. Margaret was a mighty struggle through several feet of soft fluff, but the views from the false summit of the snow-plastered trees is a memory that will always endure. Defiance was on a gorgeous day after several weeks of unpleasant weather. The summit was a spectacular view of the Cascades for hundreds of miles N and S!

Best climb: Mt. Forgotton. I never knew that the summit was so great, having been up the Perry Creek trail before. I didn't go far enough -- the summit is truly spectacular with its views of Glacier Peak and thousands of other North Cascade peaks.

Best hike: Wow, this is a toughie. Discovering a historic trail (big secret, not tellin') that has been abandoned for years... Fabulous sunset/moonrise/moonset/sunrise on Mt. Ruth... 3 days of nobody but bears and elk in the Olympics... continual discovery... I can't say for certain! It's a tie between all the 4-stars on the list below.
