2001 trips

The Year 2001 in Pictures | 2000 | 1999 | 1998 | previous years

2001: the overnight odyssey. Departing from a pattern of my previous seasons, the year was dominated by long trips. All of them were fantastic journeys and grand adventure. It started with a month in France, where I had lots of fun canoeing, walking and cycling on a tour of villages.

Upon returning, I hit the trails and high traverse country of the Washington Cascades. First was a 4-day trip to Grassy and Gamma ridges over the July 4 weekend. Next was a fun overnighter to Rampart Ridge. Then a 4-day trip bagging six peaks along some of the Fortress high route. Then a 3-day trip to Mt Olympus and a 3-day trip to Clark Mt. Finally a 5-day trip along the Ptarmigan Traverse and the 9-day Glacier Peak circumnavigation.

What a year! The winter weather was unusually pleasant, with several great sunny days. The low snowfall gave us an extended summer season. Only one trip (Mt Olympus) had bad bugs. What a year!

Best trip of 2001: Ptarmigan Traverse. The most spectacular sustained scenery I've ever seen!

Year of the Blueberry: Several trips had a bushes bursting with bountiful berries. And not just mountain huckleberries, but many varieties of the low blueberry bushes -- which are extremely tasty! The best area was Buck Creek Pass, closely followed by West Cady Ridge and the Boulder Pass area.

Most scenic day: Artist Point. Hey, you can drive here, but so what? The stunning views of Mt Shuksan and Mt Baker from one vantage is truly stupendous.

Best scrambling trip: In a four day period, John and I enjoyed tasting the sweet nectar of the following summits: Chiwawa, Fortress, Helmet Butte, Liberty Cap, Napeequa, and Cirque. We almost got up Cleator and Buck, but ran out of time. Unfortunately, that trip almost ended the season when I bashed my knee very hard in the brushy Napeequa Valley. In the end, the swelling kept me from walking for two weeks, but finally subsided enough to allow gentle walking. Within three months it was back to normal.

Best abandoned trail: Definitely the old Grassy Point trail. We finally lost it at the 3600' level. But what a find and what a trip. Other abandoned trails were Evergreen Mt, (possibly Round Mt), Chenius Falls, Milk Creek (several trips), Jumbo Mt miners trail, Commonwealth Basin, Gamma Ridge, Bootjack Ridge, Clark Mt sheepherder trail, Middle Ridge, CCT at Surprise Gap/Mt/Deception Lk, Manley Cabin trail towards Lewis Pk, Poet Ridge sheepherder trail, Kelley Creek, and Mt Pilchuck south route.

Best winter scramble: Round Mt. A great snowshoe route to the 8th most prominent peak in the state -- and only a 5000'er! Blazes indicate a trail used to go near the summit. A perfect day in beautiful snow. Runner up was a great trip up Palmer Mt.

Most challenging scramble: Napeequa Peak. John would not give up, and after four tries he found the secret passageway. I had given up hope, but gamely followed and enjoyed a well-won summit.

Worst trip: A winter scramble up Tirzah and Wallace in horrible conditions. Ice over duff made for slippery ground. Glopping wet globs of snow soaked us. The peak had no views. A totally lame trip. Runner-up goes to the sideways rain all the way up to 4000' on Mt Persis one yukky day.

Oldest trail: Near Rocamadour France I hiked way up the opposite ridge to stone wall lined paths.

Most fun gathering of famous people: The Pack and Paddle retirement potluck, where I met people like Roper, Pullen, Fry, Howbert, Zimmerman and Brisbane... and many more too numerous to mention.
