2002 trips

2002 Summary: a great year. Not quite to the stellar standards of 2001, but satisfying and productive. After meeting several new people early in the year, peak-bagging took over for some reason. Not quite as many abandoned trails projects but explorations in several new areas made for a good season.

What a summer and fall! Good weather happened weekend after weekend. It was hard to work on sunny weekdays but fortunately the weather cooperated most weekends.

Best trip of 2002: Glacier Peak Circumnavigation II. Lots of fun testing ultra light gear with fun people on spectacular terrain. Found a good project: Buck Peak via Louis Creek. Thankfully we went up the wrong peak, so I have an excuse to return!

Year of the Southwest: We took a foray into Arizona, California, and Nevada. Found some spectacular 12th century ruins. Discovered some grand scenes.

Longest day: Spire Mtn. We underestimated the length of this rarely climbed peak near Conglomerate Point. The class 5 "class 3" ridge was a good challenge for me. Funny how Jim was also on:

Hardest day: Persis/Index traverse. I took a heavy pack up Persis, "training" for an anticipated climb of Glacier Peak in a day. Fortunately, that never happened, because I exhausted myself trying to slog over to Index and back. I never thought I'd make it back to Persis, where I nearly collapsed in a heap. Can you say "bonk"?

Most relaxed trip: Stillaguamish Mtn. We took a tent up one evening, intending to climb Stillaguamish and Forgotten, and maybe East Twin the next day. Ha! It got foggy, so we lounged in the tent until nearly 3pm. Finally we groped our way to Stillaguamish, unable to see more than 100 feet.

Most formiddable summit: Skadulgwas Peak. Although I managed to get dragged up the west ridge of Formiddable, it looked nothing like the scary face of Middle Higgins. From a distance it looked incredibly steep. Closer it looked nearly vertical. But upon getting to the base it was easy class 2. Been fooled many times but not this badly.

Best abandoned trail: North Crest Cutoff trail. Not too many abandoned trails this season... darn peak bagging got in the way. But the discovery of a new unmapped but signed trail to Janus Lake has me intrigued and impatient for next year. Others included routes to Stilleto Peak, the Carne high route (twice), Middle Ridge, .

Best climb: Sloan Peak. A classic peak that has an easy glacier, then a somewhat spooky class 2 heather traverse to easy scrambling to the top. I'd repeat the trip any time.

Longest bushwack: Mt Blum. I think Donna has forsworn ever going on a trip with me again, after the 4000' of brush and "path" to Blum Lakes. Still, it was a superb trip in gorgeous, unspoiled terrain. I'd do it again.

Best shakes year: Trip after trip, we managed to hit the 59er Diner for their superb shakes. Also had some good shakes at Cascadian Farms. mmmm.
