Casa Pizza on Magruder north of Montana

Casa Pizza seems to be so well hidden in a small strip shopping center behind Casa Ford that I may not have known about it except for an inquisitive nature that has led me to many of El Paso's backroads and side streets. Casa Pizza is across the street from Carlos and Mickey's, one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in the city, but the restaurant is tucked away in the back of the shopping center so that it may not be noticeable to the majority of people who pass by it.

Open since 1987, Casa Pizza is not lacking customers, many of which seem to be "regulars." Pizza is the most popular item, and the owners say everything is made with "all natural ingredients."

I may have tried the pizza years ago, but after ordering the Greek food this has been my choice on subsequent visits. I have found Greek cuisine to be one of the most disappointing I have found in restaurants throughout the Southwest, with my standard for comparison being a small place that no longer exists next to the Houston Ship Channel where Greek sailors used to hang out. Casa Pizza has a rather limited Greek menu, but it is one of the few places I have tried where the food measures up to the flavor and quality that I experienced in Houston. In fact the main problem with Casa Pizza has nothing to do with the food, but it is that only a couple of Greek entrées are available, along with a limited number of salads and desserts.

The "House Specialties" on Casa Pizza's menu consist of two Italian dinners, gyros, musaka, and a Greek Plate (with a combination of items). All come with a House Salad that is one of the best I have tried in El Paso. The salad is made with fresh greens, feta cheese, and a delicious dressing. I highly recommend the salad even if you have to pay extra for it. Several salads are available to order from the menu, but the simple "tossed" salad is quite delicious and is the least expensive one listed.

Musaka
Musaka is one of the "House Specialties"

There used to be a Greek restaurant in downtown El Paso that served a decent Musaka (or "moussaka," as I have seen it spelled elsewhere). I have been glad for Greek cuisine's popularity in El Paso, but I think Casa Pizza has come the closest to capturing the essence of musaka as I originally experienced it. Of course this does not necessarily mean that the one here is more authentic than others that have been served in El Paso, but in my mind Casa Pizza's musaka is about as close to the real thing as you can find. The eggplant was cooked so that it was neither too hard nor too soft, the spices were right, and the crust tasted perfect to me. The dish came with ground beef that was not terribly appealing to me, but I know this is the way musaka is supposed to be made, and I was happy because of the fact that the meat was cooked properly. Overall I thought this was an excellent dish.

Gyros is the other Greek entrée available, but I do not remember having tried it (although my first visits to Casa Pizza were years ago and I probably would not remember what I ordered).

Spaghetti, lasagna, chicken parmesan, and pizza make up the restaurant's Italian menu. Hot submarines are also available.

If the other food is as good as the Greek cuisine, I can see why the place is busy most of the time, even though it is not in the most high profile location. Word of mouth and loyalty by regular customers keep the restaurant quite popular, and for good reason.
